J ohn Dean and his family were among t.he pi oneer s ett lersof Lincoln Count y , and through t.he yea r s his de sc endan t.eha ve contr ibuted actively to the welfare end prog r ess o ft he ir conmunUiesl yet they ha ve be en given little at t.entio nby family historians. The pr es ent collecti on or data i sintended in some degree to re :nedy t hi s deficiency. Werealize that it is ""efully incomplete and pro bably, nowand the n, inaccurate. Both conditions are inherent. inthe circwnstances under which it was assem bled - mainlyincidertally to other genealogical work . It derives somewhat from personal knowledge, somewhat from informationcollected by co rrespondence t somewhat, f ro m a few publishedsources I and far l ess than it should f r om research in primary sources . Hany original sources - c ensus es t cemeteryr ecords , land records , will:;J, mortuary r-ecorda , ' t ax l iS t s ,et.c , , etc . - were availabl e to us only in a l imited degree .Even so , it. may be a helpful beginning for a l at.er , morecomplete genealogy of t.he Deans . Such we hope t.hat. it. willprove.

A furt.her r emark or t~ - In the course of our work we havefound Deans in the area whom we have been unabl.e t o placein the family as we have organized it ; mos t of them arenoted in Appendix III . And - we have found it con venient.to abbreviate r e f er ences to certain sources 8S (ollowss

In those far-off day sce ment was unknown, but the qual ity of the builder's art which went into its co nstruction has be en verr evident in the manner in which the mill withstood t heel ements for nearly a century. The wal l s are as true as any modern building.

It was sa i d that, when Hr. Dean had ecnpket.ed the mill, he was heavilyin debt , with carrying charges on his l oan amounting to $9 a day. Very feHthought that he woukd be able to make a succes s of such a big enterprise t hutthey reckoned without the abil ity and energy of t he hardy miller . A big dam, 20 feet high , backed the waters of the Twenty Creek upnearly to Tintern, over tHO miles away , and the backlog of water provided thepower to run the hea vy millstones . Day after day, and many ti[nes far into thenight, the sound of t he t urning wheels could be heard .

I n those days, the practice was to take every tenth bushel of grainin lieu of hard cash , and Andrew Dean soon wor ked up 8 flourish i ng business ,s el l ing his flour and chop over an ever-widening t.er-r-Ltory , Stone flour, regardedby many as the healthiest ·i..~eredient for bread, and one Lof] t he most tasty, wasground at the mill , and nearby re sidents still recall with nostalgia the l ong- r emembered taste of the bread and rolls made from it•• ••
