The Dean’s messageA remark often heard at ESSCA is that students have 5 years to develop their personal and profession potential.

But although we believe that well-proven teaching methods, a positive working environment and high quality facilities are obviously essential for personal development and to getting the most from one’s studies, they are not sufficient on their own.

Remaining faithful to a long-standing commitment to human values, ESSCA has always attached particular importance to the personal development of its students. Our staff and faculty never forget a student is first and foremost a person and focus on the well-being of each and everyone throughout their studies.

Individual student guidance, awareness and prevention campaigns for a healthier life, as well as the many sports and extra-curricular activities and societies are just some of the numerous initiatives implemented by ESSCA to promote self-esteem and self-confidence together with respect and trust in others. Beyond the objective of getting a degree or diploma, these initiatives are instrumental in developing students’ potential, both as individuals and executive managers.

Catherine Leblanc, Dean of the ESSCA Group

Consequently, ESSCA is committed to preventing risk behaviour, guaranteeing the security of students and dealing with well-being issues. This innovative and deliberate policy regarding prevention is implemented through training sessions, communication campaigns, control and supervision of student events and activities.

Four years ago, ESSCA recruited a project leader specialised in preventive health, responsible for organising awareness campaigns in partnership with students both in Paris and Angers. The campaigns have two high points:

The Rallye santé (or “health rally”) , during Freshers’ Week. For half a day, first-year students attend five workshops on sleep, road safety, nutrition, emotional well-being and alcohol/energy drinks.

The Health Week in February. It is aimed at all ESSCA students, irrespective of their year of study. For 5 days, free exhibitions and stands provide students with information on such topics as sleep, tobacco or nutrition.

There are no more than six official student parties during the academic year governed by procedures and regulations aimed at enhancing prevention and safety. One ESSCA member of staff attends each party and makes sure that all regulations are observed: free soft drinks, emergency services on the spot, collective transport by bus, etc.

ESSCA also counts on the development of sports and extra-curricular activities and societies to help students find a balanced lifestyle and well-being. First-year students are strongly encouraged to get involved in one of our 50 societies. Since the onset of the 2011 academic year, the ESSCA campus of Angers has offered multisport facilities (basket-ball, tennis, volley-ball, handball…) complementing those already existing. In Paris, students are offered special rates in 12 sports clubs in the Ile de France region throughout the year.

Through various policies favouring dialogue and encouraging students to assume their responsibilities, ESSCA wishes to show its support of their students on their way to independence and success.

Although our first-year students are already young adults, they also are at the beginning of a stage in their lives when certain behaviour may affect their health or personal development.

> ESSCA PROFESSORS’ RECENT PUBLICATIONS:

Since the beginning of this academic year, our Angers campus has a PECT classroom (PECT is a French acronym for “Learning in a collaborative and technological environment”).

This room has several large screens on the walls and round tables equipped with personal computers. A monitoring software enables teachers to have remote access to the computers at any time and to send off MCQs for immediate learning assessment so students feel that they are learning more without slack periods.

Drawing upon the “Scale Up” project initiated in North Carolina in the early 2000s, such an experiment is a big first in France. It is founded on several surveys indicating that students’ attention decreases after about 10 minutes but can be stimulated by varying rhythms and methods of learning.

For Catherine Leblanc, Dean of ESSCA, “Such a tool will enable our school to maintain a one-length lead as far as teaching methods are concerned”.

After the “business ethics” blog created in the early months of 2011, the “webmarketing” blog will provide food for thought to students, teachers and professionals.

The PECT classroom project was initiated by the ESSCA Centre for Pedagogy and Education Support (or CPSE). Founded in 2010, the Centre organises student assessment of teaching and provides teachers with advice and training.

The Centre is constantly sourcing new technologies and using innovative tools: distance learning through videoconferences, video-based self-assessment, podcasts, etc.

On September 24 & 25, the ESSCA Alumni Network organised its “Centenary Congress” in Angers.

The event brought together some 500 alumni belonging to many different year groups. They were welcomed by the School Dean before being showed around the recently (2009) extended Campus of Angers by students. Some of the Alumni had not been back for over 30 years!

On Saturday 24th, a round table entitled “The enterprise at the heart of the 21st century networks” gave the alumni the opportunity to share their experience as managers. The day ended with an evening dinner reception at the Greniers Saint-Jean in Angers.

With 10,500 members, including 6,700 executives currently working, this network actively supports ESSCA students and graduates in France and overseas.

Run by Laurent Muzellec, a marketing professor, and 5th year students majoring in webmarketing, this blog focuses on the opportunities offered by the new media in marketing communication (social networks, applications, virtual games, blogs…) on the web and mobile platforms.

Its aim is to provide information and discussion about the new digital trends, presenting professional or academic surveys and explaining the new technologies and their business implementation.

The ESSCA catalogue came out at the beginning of the current academic year. PHILOSOPHY LECTURES IN ANGERS AND PARISThe French philosopher Charles PÉPIN gave two lectures in Angers and Paris last November, as part of a series of cultural events organised by ESSCA.

In his first lecture entitled “How can philosophy help us cope with change” and founded on three major philosophical figures (Epicure, Kant and Sartre), Charles Pépin set out ways of thinking that according to him could help us come to terms with issues related to current economic and political fluctuations.

“Wanting more or wanting better? Wanting more AND wanting better” was the title of his second lecture. After presenting the Stoic voluntarism and the philosophies of Descartes and Kant, Charles Pépin concluded that “to want too much kills the wanting”. Such a criticism signals the qualities of such an approach but also its limits, and questions our behaviour as professionals and individuals.

In November, ESSCA signed an agreement

with Clarkson University for the development

of student mobility. Located in Postdam in the

state of New York, Clarkson holds an AACSB*

accreditation and ranks among the best American

universities. ESSCA now has 15 renowned

partners in the United States, a destination highly

prized by students.

In 2011, some twenty institutions joined ESSCA’s international network that now includes 160 universities in over 40 different countries. This is an additional asset for students who may study abroad for one semester as soon as the 3rd year and choose from the many destinations available.

* An American quality label recognised throughout the world.

All ESSCA partners at a glance: the school has just issued a large-scale map that locates all the partner universities belonging to its international network across the world.

This map is given to final year secondary school pupils at student fairs, ESSCA open days or upon request at [email protected]

ESSCAENTREPRENDRE

Entrepreneurship is given particular attention thanks to the “ESSCA Entreprendre” initiative which supports students throughout and even after their studies.

The inauguration of the premises of the ESSCA enterprise zone and business incubator at Boulogne-Billancourt gives us an opportunity to take stock of the school’s achievements in this field.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE ESSCA PROGRAMMEThroughout their curriculum, ESSCA provides its students with entrepreneurship training and guidance. From defining their personal profile and strengths at the beginning of their studies to choosing the Entrepreneurship specialist pathway in the Master’s degree programme, students are provided support and advice to develop the skills and expertise necessary for starting a business or managing innovative projects. Once they have graduated, budding entrepreneurs are hosted, coached and stimulated in an incubator or enterprise zone to encourage and sustain the development of their activities.

INCUBATOR OR ENTERPRISE ZONE?Located on the ESSCA campus of Boulogne-Billancourt, 56 quai Alphonse Le Gallo, the incubator and enterprise zone cover an area of 300 m². Though both terms are similar, their aims are different:

GUIDANCE TO SUCCESS A joint team of ESSCA teachers and graduates and partner companies’ managers actively supports the budding entrepreneurs. These “mentors” listen carefully and ask questions skilfully so as to provide relevant advice and help the young entrepreneurs work out solutions to their current difficulties. They also share their networks to foster the development of projects.

Alexandre PERRIN DELIRY, first year student in Angers

Although I was eager to start my

studies at ESSCA, I was worried about

a few things: what would teachers be

like? Would I like the new subjects they

teach? Would I be equal to the task? But the promised quality of courses

met my expectations. Once my confidence was restored, I became more

involved, learned how to organise my work more efficiently and take

stock of my new more independent life. I like the supportive environment

ESSCA offers, with students, teachers and administrative staff all very

much involved.

Laure LI, first year student in Paris

My first months at ESSCA have been a

complete change from my high school

years! Economy and management

classes are often based on real

situations and the general atmosphere is also quite different. A strong

team spirit and feeling of comradeship prevail among students, reinforced

by lively student societies. The whole scene helps students to integrate.

I am currently looking for my end-of-year work placement advised by a

tutor who is also one of my professors. I would like to carry out this work

placement in the luxury sector. After almost six months at ESSCA, I feel

sure I have made the right choice.

Limited financial means should not prevent anyone from successfully completing their studies. Therefore, for more than twenty years now, the ESSCA solidarity fund has contributed to the reduction of tuition fees for those students having financial difficulties, whether they have a scholarship or not.

At the beginning of the academic year 2012-13, our school will step up its support programme for scholarship holders through the creation of an Excellence Scholarship: the first ten scholarship holders who successfully pass the 1st year entrance exam will receive a monthly 300€ scholarship for the ten months of the academic year for each year of their studies

Moreover a reduction of expenses linked to the entrance exam will be given to scholarship holders:

• 1st year entrance exam - Written exams: 50% reduction of the registration fees*, that is 90€ for the ESSCA entrance exam- Oral exams: payment of travel expenses to Angers

• The entrance exam to the Master’s degree programmeWritten and oral exams: free registration fees and payment of travel expenses to Angers or Paris

* Please send receipts to the entrance exam service before the registration closing date ** Please get in touch with the entrance exam service
