Vins 50-year window on the world

When a young Vin Taranto told his grandfather he was going to set up his own glazing business in 1963, he was told to forget it.

Grandfather had emigrated from a dirt-poor Italian island off Sicily in 1908 and had groomed his grandchildren to become successful businessman. His only comment was that I should go into the food business because people must always eat, but if they had a broken window they could hang a bag over it, Vin, now 74, recalls.

But Vin stuck to his guns and set up business in a shed on the family farm in Bangholme. The 50th anniversary of one of Greater Dandenongs most well-known family-driven businesses was recently celebrated with a reunion party for 100 guests at Dandenong Town Hall. Taranto Glass now employs 120 people and had more than $30 million in sales last financial year.

In a 50th-anniversary booklet, Vin tells a story of a half a centurys pride and progress. The seeds to go into business were planted very early in my life when my grandfather would drive me from Warragul to Mornington for boarding school at the tender age of five. I can still feel him grasping my knee and telling me

when I grew up I must make the money. I left school in grade 8, when I must have made some smart alec remark to the teacher, who said she did not know why I came to school as I knew more than she did.

After a stint on the family farm, Vin worked odd jobs before joining Bremner Glass in Frankston. He liked the work and, after two years, gave notice, only to be told by Bob Bremner he would not make it on his own.

After discussion with his young wife, Carmel, he asked for his job back the next day, and worked there for another year before launching his own business doing jobs for friends and family members.

Total sales for 1963-64 were $8000, and in 1965 Vin and his wife bought a block of land in Dandenong for

1800 and built their first home in Sarona Street. Vins parents had moved to Frankston Road, Dandenong, and it was there that a small factory was built in their backyard. In 1966, Vin and Carmel bought the factory from Vins parents for $10,000.

Over the next few years they bought three adjoining blocks until they had a corner site big enough to build a factory that by 1969 employed 30 people. The first two office staff employed by the family still live locally. They are Brenda Hall of Dandenong and Karen Kenny of Upper Beaconsfield.

Vin remembers the risks he took in the early days, such as fitting the clock-face glass on Dandenong Town Hall in the 1970s. I had no safety harness, hanging out in midair, but that was the accepted practice back then. Everything seemed so much safer then. We took risks because there was no talk of safety.

In 1985, Vin says, I was having trouble running the business, it had got so big. It was then Oliver Davey Glass approached me to sell, so I did.

A condition of the sale was that Vin couldnt start another glazing business for five years. So he and his eldest son, Michael, began fabricating aluminium windows and doors, and Seelite Windows and Doors was born, and continues to thrive, now employing 70 people at its Dandenong site. Another son, Paul, owns Taranto Glass and Screens in Wonthaggi, as well as a business in Inverloch, while a third son, Kevin, has Taranto Windows and Glass in Leongatha.

Its obvious that the Papua New Guinea/Manus Island solution is not liked by the majority of Afghans living in Australia. The condition of the camps they have in

PNG and Manus Island can be inhumane for holding people long-term while their applications are processed.

With the introduction of the new policy, I believe that conditions in detention centres should first be improved dramatically so people there could be a bit happier.

Within the Afghan community, there are two views. People who are trying to bring their relatives by boat to Australia, and are paying smugglers a lot of money, are saddened by the latest policy of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

People who want to bring relatives using the legal process, by sponsoring them through migration programs, are a bit more relaxed because they feel the places for their relatives are being taken by the boat people.

So many people have made applications for relatives to come via legal channels that it takes years. Thats not acceptable to everyone.

When we make inquiries to the Immigration Department, they say it will take at least five years for an application to be finalised.

These people hope the new Rudd policy will speed up the process. If that happens, the community would be satisfied and not need to resort to people smugglers.

Ive lodged a sponsorship application with the department myself. Its been eight months and I havent had any update, just confirmation that they received it. You ask the department why it takes so long and they say they are too short of personnel.

If Mr Rudd genuinely wants people to use legal channels for refugee status, he should put more money into the department to double staff numbers. They could then process the applications faster.

The departments goal of accepting and processing 14,000 refugees a year increasing this year to 20,000 cannot be done. Its impossible to be processed given the staff levels locally and in their overseas posts.

Since Mr Rudd released the latest policy, a number of Afghans have asked me what they should do. Some have relatives in Jakarta waiting to come to Australia. I have advised them to tell their relatives, their friends and their kids to go back to Afghanistan.

The problem is, most of those people dont have travel documents so they cant go back. Its a horrible situation.

Im surprised that the department and the Australian and Indonesian governments havent found these people smugglers.

For the past 10 years, Ive been advocating for an international conference for countries that have asylum seekers leaving and arriving, such as Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Syria. They should find a common solution they can all agree on.

Australia can then play its part, increasing its intake of refugees by making it easier to apply legally to come here.

Australia doesnt have the dialogue with these countries that it should have. Without a conference like that, wed always have the burden on our shoulders. The other countries will be thinking its not my problem.

Im surprised the department cant come up with a solution. It seems that within the department, issues have been handled by people without the right understanding. They are so conservative that they dont even ask for our opinion. I would happily give a talk to them in Canberra if invited.\

Authorisation A02389The City of Greater Dandenong Council has prepared Amendment C124 to the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme.

MoToring \ rod easdown gets behind the wheel

Electronic manual gearboxes are becoming common, and with emission laws tightening, theyll get more so.

Volkswagens DSG, which is also used in Audis and Skodas, is one of the best, but thats not saying a lot. These things can be frustrating to drive and theyre expensive to service. Ill take a conventional auto any day.

They have flat spots, especially on take-off and most notably in reverse, that can be anything from annoying to enraging. Im sure the only reason people buy them is because its the only way to get a lot of cars without a clutch pedal. Volkswagens, for example.

The other frustrating fuel-saver lately is auto stop/start, where the engine stops when the car does, restarting when the brake is released. Some are fast enough to be almost (but not quite) seamless. Some arent.

Now combine auto stop/start with an electronic manual. The delay on take-off is even longer. But this is not the worst bit. By the time the engine fires and the clutch engages, your foot has been on the accelerator long enough to build up a few revs, so theres a sharp thump of acceleration that jolts through the whole car.

Its worse if youre hurrying, but even when youre not its always there, noticeable enough for passengers to comment. So you either amble off at the lights or jump.

I cant say how maddening this is in a performance car such as Audis S6. If you want to get off the line smoothly you cant tap

into its massive performance. And the DSG is the only gearbox available.

So in a car thats all about satisfying, high-performance driving, you get a gearbox thats annoying and finicky off the mark.

Its exasperating because otherwise the S6 is one of the worlds great touring cars. Its fast, responsive, and grips like a limpet. And even though the suspension is tight, ride quality is surprisingly compliant.

Part of this is down to brilliant seating thats beautifully supportive without

being uncompromisingly Teutonic.For a big car the Audi handles with remarkable agility and finesse, and makes

for very quick point-to-point journey times. It wont take you long to discover that the cruise control automatically disengages when cornering forces exceed a certain limit because that limit is relatively

easy to reach.Even when tootling around the city

the S6 is entirely acceptable. I just wish it came with a full manual. \
