OATS

Food for thought: eating healthy for examsStaff writer Reyna Desai sat

down with Rebecca Rebmann, a sports nutritionist and dietician at Campus Health Services, to get her take on healthy habits during exams.

n What types of eating hab-its should students adopt to stay healthy during exams?

Don’t skip meals. Your brain needs carbohydrates

for energy, and if you skip meals you give it less energy when you need it the most. Eating a sand-wich takes 5 minutes at the most, so you always have time to eat.

n How large should meals be? It’s better to have three smaller

meals and two to three smaller snacks.

Smaller meals are easier and quicker to digest. When you eat every few hours, your blood sugar stays regulated and your body doesn’t have to work overtime.

n Which foods are energy rich?Carbohydrates are what the

body — primarily the brain — uses for energy. The starches, fruits and vegetables are important. Starches take a little longer to digest so the energy sticks around longer.

Fats cause an up and down reac-tion, and when blood sugar goes low, you feel the crash.

n When is a bad time to eat?

You should be eating when you’re using energy. Typically stu-dents need energy during the day.

If you’re hungry late, eating yogurt or an apple is fine.

n How much caffeine should a student have every day?

The less the better. Take a step back and see if you’re

getting enough sleep, carbohydrates and hydration. If you have those three you won’t need caffeine.

Two hundred mg to 300 mg is the maximum you should have every day, and you can reach this very quickly. The problem is the amount of caffeine doesn’t have to be labelled on products, just that it contains caffeine.

It’s a stimulant and not the best way to get energy. Tea and hot chocolate are better than coffee, soda and energy drinks.

n What is your stand on energy drinks and power bars?

They are just a bunch of sugar and caffeine with a cool package and name. One Redbull isn’t going to kill you, but if you are depending on multiple drinks daily, you need to change your diet and sleeping habits.

n Any advice for students with limited free time for exercise dur-ing exams?

Fit it in where you can. Schedule a study break for exercise.

If you usually drive to campus, walk or bike instead, or park fur-ther away so you walk more. Take stairs instead of elevators.

Little things add up.n How many hours of sleep do

you recommend?

Students need a minimum of seven to eight hours of sleep. Some need up to 10.

A lot of students take naps dur-ing the day and that wreaks havoc with your sleep at night. Preferably you shouldn’t nap at all, but if you do limit it to 20 to 25 minutes.

n Any final recommendations for students during exam week?

Eat breakfast and really get your sleep in. Research has consis-tently shown that if you eat a car-bohydrate-rich breakfast before an exam, you’ll have better memory recall and higher scores.

di≠erent finals, di≠erent study habits necessary

With final exams beginning Friday, Daily Tar Heel writer Courtney Tye sat down with Christina Perry, a learning spe-cialist at the Learning Center, to get advice on how to study for vari-ous types of final exams.

Multiple choice

If your professor can provide old exams, review them to get an idea of the style of questions that the professor will ask. The style of multiple choice questions can vary greatly, so learning your professor’s style can help.

Or you can make up your own questions. Come up with ones that involve analysis and application rather than just simple facts.

As you take the test, don’t let the answers confuse you by reading them first. Cover them and focus on the prompt. Cross out incorrect answers as you go. You’ll save time by not coming back to them.

Fill in the Blank

Fill-in-the-blank exams require the same study method as matching or ID tests: basic memorization.

But students often don’t rec-ognize the terms in different contexts.

Invest time into creating a list of terms from slides, lectures and books. Study so you know them no matter how they are presented.

Essays

Ask your professor or TA for practice prompts, or make up your own with a partner.

Anticipate what could be asked, because not feeling surprised on exam day is key.

When writing the essay, budget your time and outline your ideas on the page. Your written outline shows your ideas to your profes-sor even if you don’t have time to finish the essay.

Analysis

Most of the time, tests that ask for an analysis are seeking your opinion.

Be sure you know the concepts and have your own ideas about them so that you will be able to back up what you say.

Identifications

Generate a list of important terms, dates, formulas and names, and use flash cards to memorize them.

For identifications, you must be able to put concepts into your own words. So study to make sure you fully understand the concept.

Oral Exams

A study partner or tutor is essen-tial for foreign language or conver-

sational oral exam preparation. Vocabulary is important in these

exams, so focus on memorization. Try practicing with a recorder, then listen and evaluate yourself.

For presentations, practice pre-senting out loud.

Let go of inhibitions and prac-tice giving your presentation to your roommate, to your TA or record yourself.

True/False

When answering true/false questions, be wary of absolutes.

If the question is putting some-thing forward as true, ask yourself, “Is it true all the time?” If there are instances of gray area, for instance, it’s probably not true.

General tips

n Highlight key words in ques-tions or prompts to focus on what they’re asking.

n Cross out answers that you can eliminate to avoid wasting time.

n Get sleep. Many people underestimate the

importance of a good night’s rest and think that cramming and stay-ing up late will make a difference.

But having a clear head on test day makes a difference, too.

Like athletes need rest to play well in games, students need sleep to perform well on tests.
