Last Sunday night witnessed the inauguration of a new presidentand cabinet of the Y. M. C. A. Within the next few days the newlyelected student body president and student council will take the oath ofoffice. That these men are capable of leading us toward the attain-ment of A Better Davidson has already been shown, else you would nothave selected them as your officers. The question is are they to havey q ytheir hands tied by a lack of support, or is the student body going toback them in their efforts for the right. Is Davidson to be better orworse next year? The responsibility lies with you. What are you go-ing to do about it?

What Makes the Firefly Glow?
YOU can hold a firefly in your hand; you can boilwater with an electric lamp. Nature long ago evolvedthe "cold light." The firefly, according to Ives and
Coblentz, radiates ninety-six percent light and only fourpercent heat. Man's best lamp radiates more than ninetypercent heat.
An English physicist once said that if we knew the fire-fly's secret, a boy turning a crank could light up a wholestreet. Great as is the advance in lighting that has beenmade through research within the last twenty years, manwastes far too much energy in obtaining light.
This problem of the "cold light" cannot be solved merelyby trying to improve existing power-generating machineryand existing lamps. We should still be burning candles ifchemists and physicists had confined their researches to theimprovement of materials and methods for making candles.
For tfiese reasons, the Research Laboratories of theGeneral Electric Company are not limited in the scope oftheir investigations. Research consists in framing questionsof the right kind and in finding the answers, no matterwhere they may lead.
What makes the firefly glow? How does a firefly's lightdiffer in color from that of an electric arc, and why? Theanswers to such questions may or may not be of. practicalvalue, but of this we may be sure—it is by dovetailing theresults of "theoretical" investigations along many widelyseparated lines that we arrive at most of our modern"practical" discoveries.
What will be the light of the future? Will it be like thatof the firefly or like that of the dial on a luminous watch? Will it be produced in a lamp at present undreamed of, orwill it come from something resembling our present incan-descent lamp? The answers to these questions will dependmuch more upon the results of research in pure science thanupon strictly commercial research.

die" spirit. The wearers of the hlue andwhite showed themselves to he truegentlemen where with hared heads theystood while the hand played '() David-son.'
Itunelied hits netted the Citadel runsin the first, third, and fourth inning Twomore runs were added in the seventhon clean hits, combined with errors intlie Davidson infield. Several Citadelrunners were cut off at the plate duringthe game
The Presbyterians took a liking toPollock's offerings in the eighth frameand only pretty fielding1 pulled himthrough Cassell and Freeman singled.Hodgin bounced to Pollock and eachrunner moved up a peg when he wasthrown out at first. The 10.21 Quips and Cranks, which willundoubtedly be one of the most attac-tve issues ever seen on the hill, will heready for delivery on or before the 10thof May. This book is composed of 308pages and will be bound in stiff fab-rikoid. The first section, 24 pages, is set*up in sepia on cameo ivory paper and
' make- a splendid lead for the first partof the book.
The Senior section is splendidly plan-ned. Their pictures are paneled onChamber's columns and the way the artwork is done in this section is one of themany examples of hi^'h toned artistry.
The individual pictures for the Sophsalso -how up exceptionally well, and asthis issue is the first to t;ive so muchspace to the Sophs the following issueswill, in all probability, have like sections, for it adds much to the appearance ofthe book.
The R. O. T. C. section, \<t pages, is abook in itself. The officers' individualphoto- and the characteristic views ofthe companies contribute no small parttoward making this one of the best sec-tions of the book. •
Athletic-, also, have quite a big part inthe make-up of the book, lor this sec-tion contains photo- of men who havemade athletic history here at Davidson.
The "Wildcat Weekly." edited by RodShaw, i- one of the most amusing, ex-citing, and interesting newspapers in cx-i-tanee. Hut besides all these there are ,numerous advertisements mingled withthe jokes. These advertisers are thefiends ot the men here and should byall means be patronized.
In short the management of this year'sOuips and ( ranks has put out one of the
best, if not the best, annual that anySenior class has ever produced. Themen that have worked on this issue havegiven their time and their efforts tomake this issue a success and the stu-dents should support them by support-ing the annual and by patronizing theadvertisers in it.
