Welcome to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and our 25th Season of presenting exceptional performing arts events, educational outreach programs and live music. We are excited about celebrating the arts with our performing arts events that include eight Houston Symphony concerts, a performance by Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera as well as our 19th Annual Children’s Festival.

The Pavilion is known as the Summer Home of the Houston Symphony, Home Away from Home of Houston Ballet and a presenting venue for Houston Grand Opera and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra.

Tonight, we hope you enjoy A Symphonic Journey with the world-renowned Houston Symphony. This program explores classical music’s more popular tunes and composers.

This year, The Pavilion installed three new state-of-the-art LED video screens in the seating area and North Plaza. These screens are larger for better viewing and have the very latest in high definition technology. The $2 million project has a 7.8 mm LED which is a new industry-leading pixel pitch for this size of application. With a brightness measurement of 5,000 nits, the screens are bright and viewable even in direct sunlight.

The Pavilion provides free mezzanine and lawn seating for all our wonderful performing arts events, thanks to our generous sponsors. At all performing arts events, guests are welcome to bring a picnic in their seat or on the hill. Lawn chairs also are provided for free at these events. Please take advantage of this free offer and bring your family, friends and neighbors to The Pavilion this season to enjoy an evening under the stars. You will be glad you did.

I am looking forward to a spectacular 25th Season and hope to see you on the hill.

Robert Franz, conductor

As Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony and Music Director of the Boise Philharmonic, Windsor Symphony Orchestra and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, Robert Franz is acclaimed by critics and composers.

In increasing demand as a guest conductor, Franz debuted with the Phoenix Symphony, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina last season.

In Houston, he leads the Symphony in educational and family concerts. His work with students has led to a continuing relationship with Radio Disney. Last season, Franz conducted the orchestra’s 100th anniversary concert, led a family series concert with the Houston Grand Opera, Theater Under the Stars and the Alley Theatre, partnered in a concert for the Anti-Defamation League and was on the podium for a side-by- side performance of Tchai-kovsky’s 6th with the Houston Youth Symphony totaling 150 musicians.

ASCAP has recognized Franz for his advocacy in arts education. Under his direction, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (2008) and the Louisville Orchestra (2001) were awarded the Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming. He has addressed the Idaho Legislature on the importance of music in education and authored his first children’s book with a CD, “Stella’s Magical Musical Tour of America.”

He received a master’s degree in conducting and a bachelor’s degree in oboe performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts.Ph

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Sponsors Support the Arts

As a nonprofit performing arts venue, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion relies on the generosity and participation of local businesses and organizations to provide the community with the bestperforming arts programming in the area. These sponsors contribute in many ways, including monetary donations, providing interactive activities in the plazas during events and supplying volunteers at The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs.

Some sponsors, like Woodforest NationalBank, have been supporters of The Pavilion for almost its entire existence. A sponsor for 23 seasons, Woodforest has a presence at each performing arts event and also has the naming rights for The Pavilion’s VIP Club.

“Being a community bank, Woodforest National Bank aligns itself with opportunities to give back to the communities we serve,” said Robert E. Marling, Jr., CEO of Woodforest National Bank. “Through The Pavilion’s performing arts programs, we are able to be a small part of enhancing the cultural enrichment of so many.”

While Woodforest supports the arts through the season, Marling cites Children’s Festival as his favorite Pavilion program.

“It would be hard to choose a favor-ite, as all programs are exceptional in their genres,” Marling said. “The Annual Children’s Festival, with its vast number of participants, allows even more peo-ple to enjoy and experience a ‘Pavil-ion moment.’”

Other sponsors have only recently be-gun supporting The Pavilion’s perform-ing arts events. Most recently, Texas Children’s Hospital—The Woodlands signed on as the newest performing arts sponsor.

“The enrichment provided by The Pavilion’s programs to the community and families in The Woodlands is ex-tremely valuable,” said Lisa Yelenick,

director of marketing and public relations for Texas Children’s Hospital. “Part of Texas Children’s mission is to play an integral role and be a committed member of the communities where we provide healthcare services.”

Check out “Encore” for a complete list of all our performing arts sponsors. The next time that you enter The Pavilion gates for a performing arts event, make sure to visit the booths in the plazas and thank our sponsors for supporting the arts in your community.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is proud to highlight Comcast as a continued sponsor of both the performing arts and contemporary events. A presenting sponsor of the Spyro Gyra and Lee Ritenour concert in April 2014, Comcast sponsored The Pavilion in its 25th Season for $100,000, more than ever before.

“The Xfinity® line of products are all about meeting the people of the Greater Houston area at the crossroads of media and technology and the performing arts are a big part of that,” said Carolyne Hannan, vice president of sales and marketing for the Greater Houston Region. “As one of the top entertainment amphitheaters in the country, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is the perfect partner for Xfinity® and an exciting way for us to be a part of The Woodlands community.”

Hannan currently serves as a member of The Pavilion’s board of direc-tors. As a first generation Irish American, she was raised on Irish music and culture and traveled extensively in North America and Western Europe as an Irish step dancer. Along with her five brothers and sisters, she also became involved in music, singing, and theater, and studied acting at HB Studio in New York City as a young adult.

“Without a doubt, my two favorite things about being on The Pavilion board are the great people I’ve met in the community, including the staff and the volunteers, and the ability to be constantly engaged in the arts,” Hannan said. “It’s so fulfilling to be close to the arts on a regular basis.”

“At Comcast, our philosophy is to truly engage with the communities we serve and that includes serving on boards and volunteering our time,” Hannan said. “Serving on The Pavilion board is a way for me to serve both my passion for the arts as

well as for serving the community.”

From community volunteer projects to opening computer centers to helping close the digital divide, Comcast supports the community in many ways. Comcast launched Internet Essentials, a program that provides low-cost broadband service and the option to purchase a full-service, Internet-ready computer. Since 2011, Comcast has con-nected more than 150,000 households to the power of the Internet at home, most for the very first time.

“About 30 percent of Americans, many of whom live near or below the poverty line, remain on the wrong side of the digital divide,” Hannan said. “Without digital literacy, home broadband access or a comput-er, these families face profound disadvantages.”

Comcast is Houston’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communication products and services. Founded over 50 years ago, Comcast’s 2,500 Houston-area employees have been dreaming big and creating products that have changed the way people com-municate, are informed and entertained.

Help Lay a Foundation for the Arts Volunteer Spotlight

In 2009, Sarah Epley became a member of The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Fellow Partners Debra and Matt Dozier told her about the organization and she jumped right in. Currently treasurer of The Partners Board of Directors, Epley is the co-chair for the Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser. She also serves as chairman of the Partners social committee, which coordinates activities for the Partners on a monthly basis. Activities range from painting to happy hours to open mic nights.

“It’s so nice to build relationships with the people you volunteer with. When we are out, people see us having a great time together and ask about our group,” Epley said. “We love to be out in the community spreading the word about Partners. So many people don’t realize the volunteer opportunities at The Pavilion. The perks are pretty great too!”

Epley’s favorite event she volunteers for is Fine Arts Education Day, when the Houston Symphony plays for Conroe ISD Fourth Graders to peak their interest in orchestra and band.

“It reminds me of a program that I attended as a student in Minnesota. It’s so inspirational to see these kids motivated through music,” Epley said.

In her home state of Minnesota, she often attended concerts and wasn’t sure where to get the same experience in Texas. Now Epley attends as many concerts at The Pavilion as she can.

“I enjoy coming to all of the concerts held at The Pavilion, whether they are classical or hard rock,” she said. “There’s such a variety here and the nice thing about being a Partner is you don’t have to choose which to come to. You can go to them all!”

Originally from Austin, Minnesota, Epley moved to The Woodlands nine years ago. A self-proclaimed “Midwestern farmer’s daughter,” she earned a finance degree from Mankato State University (now Minnesota State University Mankato). A member of Honors Choir and Orchestra in college, Epley plays the piano, viola, flute and sings. She works as a legal assistant for Montgomery County Women’s Center. She has a cat named Bugsy.

Make a lasting contribution to the arts with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Donor Brick. A Pavilion Brick can be a lasting symbol of your support for performing arts, a unique birthday gift, a way to recognize coworkers or business associates and a remembrance of family members and loved ones.

The bricks are located at the main entrance of the venue outside the North Gates. Proceeds from the brick donations support The Pavilion, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization. The current cost is $100 per brick.

The Pavilion Partners honor past board presidents by engraving and in-stalling a brick with their name and “Pavilion Friend” on it. Any Partners member, who joins at the Gold or Platinum level, receives a brick in their honor. Another way to participate in the brick donor program includes a corporate brick with the company’s logo engraved on it.

The Pavilion is hosting a brick dedication June 11 at 11 a.m. The public is wel-come to attend the event and help celebrate the arts in our community.

The Pavilion Donor Brick program is a great way to leave your own legacy for all to see.

For more information on The Pavilion Donor Brick Program or to purchase a brick email Leslie Williams or call 281-210-1125.

Concert Etiquette

CHILdRENThe Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orches-tra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible.

ELECTRONIC dEVICES Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Photography and videography are NOT allowed during the performances, including with cellphones, at the request of the artists. Tablets, such as iPads and Kindles, are not permitted into the venue because they are a distraction to other guests and the artists.

LATE SEATINgFashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.

duRINg THE PERFORMANCEGuests should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a per-formance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assis-tance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience.

APPLAuSENot sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience.

AFTER THE CONCERTBravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely. TO PICNIC, OR NOT TO PICNIC?Picnics are welcome at all performing arts events at The Pavilion. Guests can bring in any type of food item; however, beverages can not be brought into the venue. Guests are welcome to bring empty water bottles to fill at water fountains or to purchase beverages at our concessions stands.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion offers concertgoers live performing arts events in a picturesque setting featuring such world-renowned organizations as the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera and Texas Music Festival Orchestra. The following information about concert etiquette will enhance your visit and help ensure that all of our guests enjoy their arts experience to the fullest.

Picture Yourselfat The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion

Do you want to be a permanent fixture at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion? Have you ever wondered who those people are on the life-size mural located just inside the VIP gate and alongside the House of Blues Hospital Tent?

The Patron’s Courtyard, or “Wall of Fame,” is a giant mural of a Pavilion audience sitting in reserved seats. Guests can show their support of The Pavilion by making a contribution to have their portrait added to the wall. This crowd, colorful, realistic and rubbing elbows with the likes of Bette Midler and Itzhak Perlman, keeps the same “seats” every year. It is a reflection of the community and the artistic atmosphere of The Pavilion.

“Since 1995, the Wall of Fame has been a wonderful opportu-nity for us to have a more permanent representation of com-munity leaders, as well as Pavilion friends and supporters,” said Christine Scully, director of development.

“Inclusion on the wall is a unique way to honor or memorialize your loved ones. In addition to friends of The Pavilion, portraits are painted of each of the Hometown Heroes annually.”

Let your support of the performing arts be known by becoming part of the Wall of Fame. For a contribution ranging from $175 to $1,000, your likeness can be added to the mural by noted artist, Pam Schrader. Her renderings are based on candid photos you supply. Schrader has won first place and best of show at The Woodlands Art League’s Spring Show this year and she is a member of several art league groups.

Proceeds support The Pavilion’s performing arts events and educa-tional outreach programs. Support the arts and become a legendary piece of The Pavilion’s history by purchasing a spot on the Parton’s Courtyard.

dream of Working in the Music BusinessComes True for Intern by Haley Shearer

Haley Shearer landed her marketing internship at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion after applying earlier in the year.

Through the internship, Shearer gains experience in the marketing field for a nonprofit performing arts center by writing press releases and articles about the venue and its events, working on website man-agement, coordinating social media sites, assisting in planning special events, taking photos at events and more. After college, she hopes to pursue a ca-reer in the music industry.

She was raised in The Woodlands, Texas, where she

attended concerts at The Pavilion throughout her childhood. She graduated from The Woodlands High School in 2011.

She is continuing her education at Oklahoma State University. She is now going into her senior year at OSU, majoring in strategic communications with an emphasis in public relations. Shearer is involved with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization in Still-water, Oklahoma, where she mentors underprivi-leged kids in the community.

A few of her favorite things in life are music, dogs and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Pavilion Welcomesthe Boys Scouts of America

at Tonight’s Concert

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is welcomes the Boys Scouts of America at Texas Music Festival Orchestra tonight where they are com-pleting their Music Merit Badge. This is the second year that The Pavilion has worked with the Boy Scouts on their badge.

Participants start out by visiting the Boy Scouts Resource booth in the North Plaza to obtain the Music Merit Badge workbook and concert program. Next, they visit The Pavilion Partners Instrument Petting Zoo to learn about the different types of musical instruments and the Partners Arts & Crafts booth to make a musical instrument and learn aboutimportant people in American music. Lastly, they stop by The Woodlands School of Rock on the Side Stage and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra on the main stage to listen to two different stylistic live performances.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

For over a century, the BSA has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes and, through over a century of experience, knows that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

Welcome Boy Scouts and congratulations on achieving your Music Merit Badge!

Page 10: The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion's On Stage Program

Tonight, we welcome the Texas Music Festival Orchestra and the young musicians performing Wagner & Maazel’s “Ring Without Words.” The winner of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artist Competition will be announced from the stage and receive a medical for their efforts, as well as showcased in a solo performance.
