1. Based on the novel that you have read, what is the lessons that you have learned from

the ending of the novel? Give reasons why you think the lesson is important.

The novel I have read is The curse by Lee Su Ann. In the novel, it ended with Azreen learning the

truth about a lot of things surrounding her sister’s death. It was very sad forAzreen too because she

had to cope with the deaths of the Old Lady and her parents. In the epilogue, Azreen went bac to

London to continue her studies. It is i!portant to note that in the end, Azreen learned to forgive. The

value of forgiveness and the i!portance of the truth resonate throughout the ending of the novel.  I learned that forgiveness is the ey to finding inner peace and strength. So!ehow, it helps a

person to !ove on despite having gone through negative situations. Azreen’scharacter teaches us to

be strong, bold and upright in order to withstand vicious gossips and to fight in"ustice lie how she

defended the Old Lady.

The sa!e goes for Azreen when she returned to London. If she allowed hatred, anger and other

negative e!otions to tae over, those e!otions would have consu!ed her and !ade her life worse.

#ut because she learned to accept the truth and to forgive, she was able to s!ile at the end. Although

the truth was difficult to handle for Azreen, especially about $adhuri and $ohd Asraf, her father

being$adhuri’s !urderer, and how $adhuri was not her real sister,Azreen !anaged to cope with all

those unfortunate events.

%ro! the ending of the novel, I learned that so!eti!es, although the truth !ay not be whateverybody wants to hear, it is always best to tell the truth because it helps people to find inner peace

and to be truly happy.

2. Based on the novel that you have read, give examples of what hope means to the

characters that you have chosen.

The novel I have read is The curse by Lee Su Ann. &ope is the feeling of wantingso!ething you desire to co!e true. In the novel, $ohd Asraf and $adhuri are in love and they hope to

be together when $ohd Asraf leaves for 'uala Lu!pur for a teaching course.

&owever, $adhuri is !arried to &a"i (hani. She plans to confess everything to her

husband and get his per!ission to release her. Asraf hopes that $adhuri is right that her husband is a

reasonable person who wants the best for her and she will ulti!ately be released fro! her !arriage.

$adhuri also plans to reveal everything to her parents about their relationship. )nfortunately, their

hope of being together is dashed when $adhuri’s father discovers the truth before she could e*plain

everything tohhi!. Saleh Abdullah, catches $adhuri and $ohd Asraf together in the rubber estate and

he wanted to go after

$ohd Asraf. Sadly, as he wields his parang, it stries $adhuri and ills her.

+ue to $ohd Asraf’s ailing grand!other, he forced hi!self to visit the Old Lady and as her to

cure his grand!other. hen she did co!e to his house, so!e of the villagers found out about it and

they thin that all the bad incidents happening around the village is due to her presence.

In addition, another character, -uan %atihah feels lie she is slowly losing her

husband after $adhuri’s death. She hopes to win his affections again by cooing a breafast feast for

hi!. #ut he did not appreciate her deed due to the !any happenings in the village instead, he left

without eating what she had cooed for hi!.

In conclusion, the novel helps us to see how hope drives different characters to do different

things and there are positive and negative conse/uences of their actions.

3. sing details from the novel you have studied, write a!out a theme that you can relate

to in your daily life. Give examples of the theme that you have chosen. "upport your

answer with close reference to the text.

The novel I have read is 0The 1urse’ by Lee Su Ann. A the!e fro! 0The 1urse’ is

about the negative effects or ru!ours and hearsay. (ossip is basically idle tal that goes bad if one is

not careful enough but !alicious gossip is even !ore dangerous because it does the !ost da!age.

%or e*a!ple, in the past, the villagers’ constant gossiping had caused the Old Lady to !oveto the "ungle because they thought that she was a crazy wo!an who illed her husband in cold blood.

They failed to understand and consider the reason behind the act and it caused the Old Lady to live

alone for the rest of her life in the "ungle. The villagers continued to spread wrong infor!ation about

the Old Lady by saying that she will cast a spell or ill those who trespass on her property.

-uan 2or!ala warned that a curse will befall the village by clai!ing that the

incessant rain was caused by the Old Lady co!ing into the village even though she ca!e only to cure

2e, $ohd Asraf’s grand!other. She gathered so!e of her neighbours and convinced the! to drive

the Old Lady out of the village. Sadly, not long after the Old Lady had cured 2e, 2e passed away

and the neighbours convinced $ohd Asraf that the Old Lady was to be bla!ed. The confrontation

between the! and the Old Lady ended tragically with her house being burnt down and her unti!ely

death.  Throughout the novel, we are constantly re!inded of how ru!ours can turn bad

and how they can lead to destruction or a tragic conclusion. As stated by the Old Lady, 34u!ours can

be da!aging even if they are untrue, especially if they are untrue. All a person can do is to ignore

the! and the ru!ours will die off as soon as another "uicier one co!es along.5

I have learnt fro! the the!e in this novel that I should not believe or be influenced

by ru!ours in our daily lives. $ore i!portantly, I should also not create and spread ru!ours about

another person. These, we !ust apply in our daily lives.

#. sing details from the novel you have studied, descri!e how it has taught you to !e a

responsi!le person. Give examples of how you learned to !e a responsi!le person.

The novel I have read is The curse by Lee Su Ann. In the novel, we learn about

responsibility in ter!s of thining before we spea and not spreading ru!ours. The gossipy villagers

spread ru!ours about $adhuri’s death and how it will bring a curse to the village. -uan 2or!ala

begins to spread ru!ours by clai!ing to have seen $adhuri’s dead body and white blood. To !ae

!atters worse, she starts to lin happenings lie the endless rain and flood to the curse. This only

creates !ore fear a!ong the villagers. -uan 2or!ala and her neighbours gossip and speculate about

everything. To top it all off, when the Old Lady is sought after by $ohd Asraf to treat his sic

grand!other, the villagers gang up to chase her away because they consider her evil as she had

!urdered her husband in the past. They feel that she is the cause of the curse.

Sadly, due to the irresponsible villagers’ ru!ours at that ti!e, the Old Lady beco!es the

victi! and she is labelled as a !ad wo!an and a !urderer. She was forced to leave the village and

had to live in a deserted house in the "ungle. She is forced to co!e to the village again when $ohd

Asraf pleads with her to treat his grand!other. hen his grand!other passed away, the villagers

were /uic to accuse the Old Lady of poisoning $ohd Asraf’s 2e and it was enough to convince

$ohd Asraf to confront the Old Lady at her house. hen things got out of hand, the house is burned

down and the Old Lady dies.

On the other hand, Azreen is a responsible person by the way she treats her parents even

though she feels that they love $adhuri !ore than her. She never receives her father’s war!th as his

daughter as !uch as $adhuri but being the responsible daughter that she is, she continues to treat

her father respectfully. Azreen also taes care of her !other who suffers fro! Alzhei!er’s till her

!other’s death.

I have learned that I have to be responsible for !y own actions. I should not spread ru!ours

nor cause har! to others without thining carefully no !atter what happens or challengers I have to

face. %or being irresponsible, we can also cause har! to other people.

$. Based on the novel you have read, write a!out a character whom you admire. Give

reasons why you admire him or her. "upport your answer with close reference to the

text.

The novel I have read is The 1urse written by Lee Su Ann. There are !any characters in the

novel but the character I find !ost ad!irable is none other than Azreen, the younger daughter of

Saleh Abdullah. I ad!ire Azreen because she has !any positive characteristics. I will give e*a!ples

fro! the novel to support !y answer.

%irst and fore!ost, Azreen is an independent girl. She goes wherever she wants to withoutseeing per!ission fro! her parents. She was deter!ined to go for the e*change progra!!e where

she lived with +atin Sharifah and +atu 6ulipli in (eorgetown. She even applied for a scholarship in

an effort to leave the village. Azreen is also loyal. This can be seen when Azreen saw 7nci $ohan

and his sons !anhandling Asraf, she ca!e to his aid by taing the bla!e for hi!.

In addition, Azreen prepares !eals for her parents and taes good care of her !other after

$adhuri’s death. She is a filial and dutiful daughter. Azreen did not believe the villagers who clai!ed

that the Old Lady could turn anyone into s/uirrels or rats as well as coo and eat the! for dinner. This

shows that she is a sensible person.

I also ad!ire Azreen because she accepts challenges. Azreen was dared to pay a visit to the

Old Lady and she went to her house. They beca!e good friends

Azreen is also a deter!ined person. Azreen could not tolerate her father’s and neighboursconstant co!plaints. So, she accepted the two8!onth foster progra!!e to stay with +atin Sharifah

and +atu 6ulipli. Si!ilarly, she was deter!ined to accept the scholarship to study in London and so

her foster parents decided to support her financially

%ro! the novel, we now that Azreen is also an open8!inded. I ad!ire Azreen as she does

not believe in the stereotype role of a wo!an who is supposedly to be docile and fe!inine. She is

also !odest. Azreen is not proud and does not put on airs although she is studying in London.

#esides that, Azreen is ad!irable because of her diligence. #oth Azreen and $adhuri wor diligently

to weave a new baset for their !other as the for!er broe the baset which was laden with durians. I

also ad!ire Azreen because she is intelligent. Azreen obtained a scholarship to pursue her tertiary

education in London.

In conclusion, the character I ad!ire !ost fro! the novel I have read is Azreen. Although sheis not perfect and has so!e negative characteristics, she has even !ore positive characteristics. She

is so!eone I can relate to and I hope to be "ust lie her. here are !any interesting events in the novel

you have read.

9.  %rite a!out an event or incident that you think is important or that you will never

forget. Give reasons to su!stantiate your answer.

The novel I have read is The 1urse by Lee Su Ann. I thin the incident when $ohd Asraf tells

Azreen that he and $adhuri were in a relationship is i!portant in the novel The 1urse. &ere are a few

reasons to substantiate !y answer.

%irst and fore!ost, this piece of news is shocing to Azreen as she has always lied $ohd

Asraf fro! her school days. She even "oined $ohd Asraf’s hocey tea! so she could spend !ore

ti!e with hi!. Though she new that $ohd Asraf was taen up by $adhuri’s beauty and always

praised her syair recitals, she never new that $adhuri too, had feelings for hi! as she had never

!entioned it to anyone before.

Secondly, this event adds a twist to the story as $adhuri agreed to the idea of getting a divorce

fro! &a"i (hani and run away fro! the village with $ohd Asraf to 'uala Lu!pur where he will be

furthering his studies. This should never have happened in the first place as $adhuri is already

!arried to &a"i (hani, the village head!an.

Thirdly, with this revelation, Azreen is able to understand what $adhuri had intended to tell her

in the letter she had written to her before she died. She also realised that $adhuri has not been happy

with her !arriage. This is because, to !any, she see!s to be living a perfect fa!ily life. 2obody

nows what she is going through.

In conclusion, this incident is very i!portant and I will never forget this incident because it !aes

the story !ore interesting. %ro! this incident, I also learn that people are not always as they see! to

be so we should not "udge the! "ust based on what they portray.
