Saint Lawrence

Deacon and Martyr

(† 258)

S aint Lawrence was Chief of the

seven deacons of Rome. In the

year 258 Pope Sixtus was led

out to die, and Saint Lawrence

followed beside him, weeping because

unable to share his fate. Where are

you going, my father, without your

son? Where are you going, holy

pontiff, without your deacon? Never

did you offer a sacrifice without my

serving you at the altar. In what way

have I displeased you? The holy Pope

comforted him with the words, I am not abandoning you, my son; a more

difficult trial and a more glorious

victory are reserved for you; in three

days you will follow me.

This prophecy was fulfilled. After the

Pope's martyrdom the prefect of the

city, knowing the rich offerings which

the Christians put into the hands of the

clergy, demanded the treasures of the

Roman Church from Lawrence, their

guardian. The Saint promised to show

him, at the end of three days, riches

exceeding all the wealth of the

empire. He was granted the time of

delay. The Archdeacon of Rome went

about assembling the poor, the infirm,

and the religious who lived by the alms of the faithful, and he brought

them to the prefect on the appointed

day. “Behold the treasures I promised

you; I add pearls and precious stones

— these virgins and widows conse-

crated to God; the Church has no

other riches.” The prefect replied:

“How dare you play games with me,

miserable one? Is this how you show

your contempt for the imperial pow-

er?”

Christ, whom Lawrence had served

in His poor, gave him strength in the

conflict which ensued. After being

placed on the rack, he was stretched

on a grill over a slow fire. He joked

about his pains. I am roasted enough

on this side, he said, perhaps you

should turn me over. Soon, his gaze

towards heaven, he gave up his soul

to God. He was buried in the cat-

acomb near the Tiburtine Way, called

the Verano Field, a little over a mile

from the city walls. The faithful

watched there for three days to

mourn their holy Archdeacon who

had been so good to them. God, by

the glory of this holy martyr, demon-

strates the value He sets upon love

for the poor. Innumerable prayers

were offered at his tomb. Saint

Lawrence continued from his throne

in heaven his charity to those in need,

granting them, as Saint Augustine

says, the smaller graces which they

sought, and leading them to the

desire of better gifts.

Dear Crusaders and Friends,

The Saints tell us that one

communion is enough to make us

Saints. Do we really believe this?

Why aren’t we Saints? We have re-

ceived holy Communion hundreds of

times. What is wrong with us? The

problem is that we love the Blessed

Sacrament only a little bit. The Saints

loved Jesus is a Blessed Sacrament

with an immense love. Is there any-

way that we can acquire this same

great love of Jesus in the Blessed

Sacrament? Of course there is, and it

is one of the Eucharistic Crusaders’

best weapons, but one that you have

been sadly neglecting.

I have told you about this

weapon before. I have begged you to

use it. However, I have not seen any

real improvement in this area, and I

feel that I have to remind you again,

to beg you again to make use of it

with your whole heart and soul.

Remember that you are Eucha-

ristic Crusaders. Eucharist is just

another name for Holy Communion.

So, you are really Communion Cru-

saders, that is, boys and girls who

help Jesus save souls by the good

communions they make. I will tell

you very seriously that you cannot be

real Eucharistic Crusaders unless you

receive Communion everyday. Let

me say it again, so that you know

that I mean what I say. Unless you go

to Communion everyday, you cannot

be true Eucharistic Crusaders.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN Now, some of you are not able

to go to Mass everyday, and if you

can’t go to Mass everyday, then you

can’t receive Holy Communion eve-

ryday. What will you do then on the

days that you cannot receive Jesus in

the Host? You will make Spiritual

Communions.

“But Father, I don’t know how

to make a spiritual Communion!”

Don’t worry, it is very easy.

All you have to do is tell Jesus that

you love Him, that you wish you

could really receive Him, and ask

Him to come into your heart spiritu-

ally with His love and grace. It is that

simple and it has astounding results.

The saints made spiritual Commun-

ions everyday, and sometimes many

times a day. These frequent spiritual

Communions made their sacramental

Communions much more powerful to

save souls. Do you know how this

happens? Well, the more we want

something, the more we love it, the

more we appreciate it. So, the more

we tell Jesus that we want to receive

Him, the more our Love of Him

grows, the more we appreciate Him.

Then, when we do get to receive Him

in Holy Communion, He will be will-

ing to grant us anything we ask, es-

pecially graces to make us holy and

graces to help save souls.

Use this weapon my dear Cru-

saders. Make a Communion, sacra-

mental or spiritual, everyday. Be-

come saints!

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Campbell

Story of the Blessed Sacrament

(Montréal, Canada 1807)

Long years ago, a young American girl journeyed from her home in

Vermont to a convent in Montréal. She had read about nuns and had a

great desire to see for herself what a convent was like. She was a

protestant and her people were not to well pleased at her request, But they

granted it. She would learned much in the convent, they said. Other

Protestant girls had finish their education in convents; why not Fanny?

So one day Fanny went to the door the old Congregation Convent in

the heart of Montréal. The portress admitted her and the good religious

welcomed her most tenderly.

Weeks past; Fanny was not happy. She mocked openly at the rites

she could not understand. The children wondered much, and fearing that

they would be scandalized, the Reverend Mother decided to send the

young girl back to her people in Vermont.

“I grieve to send the child home,” said Mother, “But she does not

improve and there is nothing else to be done.”

“Give her another trial, dear Mother,” pleaded the Sister. “Let her

stay with us a few more weeks. God and his Blessed mother may change

her heart.”

The Superior granted the petition and again

was disappointed in the results. The last day of

Fanny’s probation was drawing near. It was Septem-

ber 8, The feast of the nativity of the Blessed Virgin

Mary.

Fannie spent the afternoon with the teacher she

loved, but there was nothing in her conduct to show a

change of spirit. She was still a doubter and spoke

her thoughts in words that deeply grieved the reli-

gious. Yet Fanny helped to prepare the flowers for

the altar, for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

The sister lifted the vase was about to take it to

the chapel ,when something made her pause.

“Why not send Fanny? Fanny, the unbeliever!”

Turning to the young girl she bade her take the vase

and place it on the alter. “Be sure;” added the Sister, “to adore our Lord

when you are there.”

Fannie laughed and went away with the flowers. She did not be-

lieve. Why should she bow down before the altar? In her hometown Cath-

olics were called idolaters. She would not become one. Thinking thus she

reached the gate of the sanctuary ,opened it, but could go no farther. She

made another effort and get her feet seems powerless to move. For the

third time she tried only to fail; and then, overcome by awe and a strange

compelling influence, she fell upon her knees and said her act of faith, the

first she had ever made. Her God was present in the tabernacle, and there,

humbled and ashamed, she knelt for sometime. Then rising, she ap-

proached the altar and placed her fragrant flowers before the Blessed Sac-

rament.

Fanny’s conversion was complete. “After such a miracle,” she said,

“I must give myself to my Saviour.”

There was bitter opposition to overcome, but at last her mother

yielded, and accompanied her daughter to Montréal, where, in the Chapel

of the Hotel-Dieu, Fanny realized that her lifework was to be among those

holy women.

High above the alter a picture of the holy family looked down upon

the Americans. “See, dear mother, St. Joseph wants me to be here:” said

Fanny, and there she found absolute content.

Wonderful are the ways that are dear Lord opens to his children to

find their true home. As we read the story of the “First American Nun,”

our hearts are stirred by the divine mercy that gave to Fanny Allen the

grace to become a Catholic and a devoted religious.

Fanny Allen was born November 13, 1784, at Westminster, Ver-

mont, and she died of lung trouble, at Hotel-Dieu, Montréal, December

10,1819.Her father was Gen. Ethan Allen, the patriot; He professed no

religious belief.

Glory be to God on high; and to

Thee, oh Jesus, on earth be all

honour and adoration in the

Blessed Sacrament forevermore!

Amen.

BIBLE HISTORY

O Lord, rebuke me not in Thine indignation, nor chastise me in Thy wrath. – Ps. VI, 2

M oses again ascended the mountain, and remained there

forty days and forty nights, conversing with God. And

when God had finished speaking with Moses He gave him

two tables of stone, on which were written the ten commandments.

Now the people, seeing that Moses did not come down from the

mountain as soon as they expected, rose up against Aaron, and

besought him, saying: “Make us gods that may go before us. For,

as to this Moses, the man that brought us out of the land of Egypt,

we know not what has befallen him.”

Hoping to dissuade them from their impious project, Aaron replied:

“Take the golden ear-rings from the ears of your wives, and your

sons and daughters, and bring them to me.” Contrary to all expecta-

tion, they brought their rings to Aaron, who, fearing to offer re-

sistance, accepted them, and made a molten calf, and built an altar.

And the people exclaimed: “These are thy gods, O Israel, that have

brought thee out of the land of Egypt.” Next morning they offered

holocausts and peace-victims, and began to eat and drink and to dance, after the manner of the

Egyptians.

Meanwhile, Moses came down from the mountain with the two

tables of stone, whereon God Himself had written His command-

ments. When he heard the shouts of the people, and saw them dance

before the golden calf, he dashed the tables to the ground, and broke

them at the foot of the mount. Then, laying hold of the calf, he burnt

it and beat it to powder.

He severely rebuke Aaron for yielding to the wicked desires of the

people. Then, standing in the gate of the camp, he said: “If any man be on the Lord’s side, let

him join with me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. Then Moses ordered them to

take their swords, go through the camp, and slay every man whom they found practising idola-

try. They did as they were commanded, and about twenty-three thousand men were put to

death that day. Next day Moses again ascended the mountain, and earnestly entreated the Lord

for his ungrateful people. But the Lord said: “Let me alone, that I may destroy them.” Still

Moses insisted, saying: “I beseech Thee, this people hath sinned: either forgive them this

trespass, or, if Thou do not, strike me out of the book that Thou hast written.”

The Lord heard his prayer, and ordered him to cut two other tables of stone. Mo-

ses obeyed, and on those tables the Lord again wrote the ten commandments. But

when Moses came down from the mountain with the tables in his hands, his face

was so radiant with glory that the Israelites were afraid to come near; hence he

veiled his face whenever he spoke to the people. From this terrible punishment

inflicted upon the Israelites we may learn what a fearful thing it is to offend God.

Moses, the mediator of the Old Covenant, is a figure of Jesus Christ, the media-

tor of the New Testament. The prayer of Moses for his people teaches us in a striking manner

that the intercession of saints has great power to avert the chastisements of God.

Saints and NATIONS

Saint king Louis IX of France, August 25th

T here have been few monarchs who wore their crown in such wise

that they merited a heavenly crown at death; king Louis IX of

France may have been the greatest. All aspects of his life were ho-

ly: personal, familial, social and public.

Much of his day was given to prayer

including Mass and Divine Office.

He was modest in his diet and dress

despite the splendour of the French

court. Of pious parents himself, his

own marriage with Margaret of Pro-

vence was blessed with eleven chil-

dren who were raised to fear God

above all else. Charity to the poor

was a virtue close to Louis’ heart.

Every day he fed hundreds of beg-

gars, often waiting on them himself.

He opened several hospitals for them.

Among the beautiful churches built

by him is the Sainte Chapelle in Paris, built to house the crown of thorns.

The crowns of England and France were still intertwined at this time

through war and marriage. In the beginning of his reign Louis checked the

advances of Henry III of England on the battlefield and negotiated a five

year truce that was favourable to France. Towards the end of his reign it

was to Louis that king Henry and the English nobles turned to judge their

longstanding dispute. Such was his reputation as a just man!

But “where your treasure is your heart shall be there also,” says Our Lord

in the Gospel. The recapture of the Holy Land and the security of the

Christians living there was where Louis spent the greater part of his spir-

itual strength. Of mixed fortunes, his first crusade concluded with a ten

year truce. Many Moslems converted on seeing his conduct: imprisoned

for several months his spirit never weakened. His second one ended with

his dying from pestilence in Tunisia, a holy death, on August 25th 1270.

Angels, sing

Praised be Jesus Christ our King.

Sundays after Pentecost

In the long succession of Sundays after the feast of Pentecost until Advent, 6 months,

our Holy Mother the Church teaches us through the parables and miracles of Our

Lord the Christian Virtues we must practice. Sunday after Sunday, we will be amazed

to know all the things Jesus did for us and how much He wants us to realise that we

were created to go to Heaven. It is important to listen to the sermons of the priests at

Sunday Mass in order to learn and be encouraged to do good.
