Gymnasium, the local dog ownersÕ lobbyingefforts paid off, as the university agreed tobuild and maintain a new adjacent dog run.The Òleash cuttingÓ of the dog run, constructedat an estimated cost of $60,000, took place in1980, and its official opening made the coverof the New York Post.

Now, New York City has the most public off-leash dog parks in the U.S., thanks to our pio-neering dog owners! But per person, with ourpopulation of 8,391,881 and 138 dog parks, weonly rank 14th, at 1.6 dog parks per 100,000residents. (Oregon wins, with 32 dog parks in apopulation of 566,143, or 5.7 per 100,000 resi-dents. Norfolk and Las Vegas come in 2nd and3rd.) If you see an opportunity to create anoth-er dog park, on city, state, or federal land, youwill get lots of support for your activism tobring NYC into the top ten!

New York Council ofDog Owner Groups,NYCdog (“nicedog”), founded 1999.

The group fought thebattle in 2006-07, saving the 9-9 policy for off-leash hours in parks like Cadman Plaza, Pros-pect, Central, and 90 others throughout NYC. www.facebook.com/pages/NYCdog-NY-Council-ofDog-Owner-Groups/113617558699487

the Õ70s led the way tolegalizing the first official public dog park, in1983, after much campaigning of local officialsand citizens.

New York CityÕs first public dog run, Tomp-kins Square Park Dog Run, was opened in 1990as part of the renovation of the park. It also is

known as First Run,because it was the firstof 55+ dog parksopened by the NYCDepartment of Parksand Recreation.

The first private dogrun in NYC, Mercer-Houston Dog RunAssociation (MHDRA),had its genesis in theÕ60s. It is not on parkland and requiresmembership tests andminimal upkeep fees.

On the corner of Mercer and Houston streets, now the chic tip of SoHo, dilapidated buildingswere brought down by the Committee on SlumClearance and Urban Renewal Plans. That left anempty lot, which was instantly used by ownersfor their dogs to run unleashed, as muddy anddirty as it was. Fifteen years later, they got per-mission to fence the area, with a double-entry-way, and connect to water. In the Õ70s, whenNYU received permission to build the Coles

105th Street Dog RunRiverside Park & 105th St.In 2012, users were dismayed at the run-down run. They worked with RiversidePark Conservancy to form a private for-mal “user group” of board members toraise awareness and funds for improve-ment. This committee fixed the gate, replenished the poop bags, got a lockabletool chest from the Park’s Dept. formaintenance supplies, and ensured volun-teer upkeep and donations with a twitterand Facebook account. So when a treefell in June, destroying the fence, theygot NYC and the Conservancy to removethe tree and put up a temporary fence in avery timely fashion. http://dogrun105.org

Union Square Dog Park (U-dog run)Southwest side of Union Square ParkIn 1996, dog owners, who had met everyday at the park while bringing their dogsto play off-leash on a patch of grass, formed a community to pitch the ParksDept. Theodore Roosevelt Park-BullMoose Dog RunNext to the Natural History Museum, northwest side on 81st St., near CPW.This run, considered to be a random parknext to the grand-daddy, Central Park, ison its way to getting an estimated$500,000 renovation. Changing thedirt/gravel ground to K9Grass is underconsideration, at an estimated cost of$250,000+. It can be pressure-washed andsprayed with chemicals to dissolve waste. To curb the noise complaints (barkingsounds intensify as they bounce off themuseum), mitigation would cost roughly$100,000. Also on the wish list is newlighting, for $15,000, a new gate with abetter lock, new benches, and a waterplay area. This summer CouncilwomanGale Brewer secured $250,000 of NYCfunds for the run.
