The Crucifer

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed,

for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will

help you, I will uphold you with my righteous

right hand. Isaiah 41.10

Alleluia, Christ is Risen!

We celebrate the Resurrection of Christ Jesus

every day. And every Sunday, when we share

in Holy Eucharist, we are reminded of that and

we delight in the fact that Christ is alive.

In Eastertide, the Resurrection of Christ Jesus

is highlighted even more. Every hymn. Every

Scripture. Every sermon. All point to the

empty tomb, to the Resurrection of Christ, and

to the hope we know through His victory over

the power of sin and death.

From Easter Sunday up to Pentecost, the

Church throughout the world will enjoy this

festive season of joy and hope. At Christ

Church, we will baptize new Christians. We

will welcome The Rev. Ted and Ann Welty

back to the Christ Church family. We will com-

mend the Choir School of East Texas for their

vital ministry. We will celebrate our youth

and honor our graduating high school seniors.

And we will welcome Bishop Doyle and wit-

ness over twenty youth and adults confirm

their faith in Christ.

In the midst of this joyful season, I pray that

you will experience the blessing of God de-

scribed in Ephesians 1.18: “Having the eyes of

your hearts enlightened, that you may know

what is the hope to which He has called you,

what are the riches of His glorious inheritance

in the saints, and what is the immeasurable

greatness of His power toward us who believe,

according to the working of His great might

that He worked in Christ when He raised Him

from the dead.”

May the Lord bless you with an Eastertide

filled with great hope and abounding joy!

Intimacy and the Priority of the Heart

Surprising though it may sound to some readers, I feel like,

over the past six months, I have had something of a personal

revolution. It is a revolution of the heart, in more ways than one.

About six months ago I was exposed to a couple of lectures

by an Episcopal priest and church historian named Ashley Null.

Null’s area of expertise is the theology of Thomas Cranmer, in-

cluding the latter’s late medieval influences (such as Richard

Rolle, Erasmus, and Lady Margaret Beaufort). Null points out

that during this time in the history of England, waves of Gospel

revival were washing up onto the shores of England.

Folks during this time were rediscovering not just Scripture,

but how to savor Scripture. How to let the Scripture seep into

the soul and to provide comfort, healing, peace, even deep spir-

itual pleasure. How to let the Scriptures be, for us, “comfortable

words.”

It is in this context, Null points out, that Cranmer came to

embrace and to promulgate a kind of maxim which apparently

originated with that disciple of Martin Luther, Phillip Melanch-

thon. The maxim is this: “What the heart desires, the will choos-

es, and the mind justifies.” What the heart desires, the will

chooses, and the mind justifies.

How did this maxim prompt a “revolution of the heart” in

my own life? Somehow, I feel that God used it—together with

several other things happening in my life at around the same

time—to allow me to experience intimacy with God. All I can say

is that I began to experience intimacy with God in a new way,

right about the same time that I had this “discovery.”

You see, despite many years of struggle to gain clarity on

such matters, not until a few months ago did I really understand

the priority of the heart, and why it matters for the Christian life.

Recently I have been putting it like this: God wants to satisfy our

desires. God wants to satisfy our desires, not through food or sex

or strong drink or entertainment or vacations. God wants to

satisfy the desires of our heart, rather, through intimate com-

munion with him.

It is the strangest thing. Strange both in its simplicity and at

times in its evasiveness. It is strange that I did not really “get”

this until the ripe old age of 45!

I have noticed two primary qualities which are connected to

this newfound intimacy with God. The first is that, based on my

experience, I can say that intimacy with God is almost the same

thing as intimacy with myself. I have been reminded of the

words of St. Augustine, that God is “closer to me than I am to

myself” (interior intimo meo, see his Confessions III.6.11). Some-

how, over the past few months, as I have been spending time

with God in a new way, I have also been spending time with my-

self in a new way.

The second quality which has accompanied this newfound

intimacy is the return of childlike wonder. The experience of a

childlike enjoyment of “mundane” reality, of simply existing, or

being embodied, or breathing. Simply being a creature of God,

always in relationship with God, is the absolute antithesis to

boredom.

“What the heart desires, the will chooses, and the mind

justifies” shows us the priority of the heart over the will and the

mind. This is how God made us. We are fashioned for intimate

communion with him. That the world, the flesh, and the devil

conspire to thwart and ruin this intimacy is a painful near-

tragedy. And yet, greater is he who is in us than he who is in the

world.

For you and for me, intimacy awaits.

Matt Boulter, Assoc. Rector

Associate Rector

From Jim Wooldridge:

“We wanted to share some pictures with you of the library and how it looks now. The women

from ‘Daughters of the King’ at Christ Church, Episcopal took on the library as a project, painting,

sorting books, moving them from another building, and stocking the shelves, and they finished their

part recently. It still needs to have the carpet and windows cleaned, but the books are in place,

white board mounted, thanks to the church youth group, and ready for the children.

Debbie Hardin and Gaye Wooldridge really spearheaded the project. I am no longer on the Board, after 8 years, but I am still

involved getting the remainder of the campus rented and brought up to speed.

Now the challenge is to have some new books donated, some of the books may have been there since the school was

opened. Please consider making a donation to this important ministry. Thank you.”

Welcome to the Weltys!

A note from the vestry

We celebrate the wonderful news of Fr. Ted Welty returning to Christ Church to fill the need of an additional priest to serve

alongside our clergy and to give support to many of our ministries. We give thanks to God for this answer to prayers for an ex-

perienced, faithful priest to join our clergy.

You have received a letter with a reply card regarding the funding for this

position. Thank you to those that have already responded. We are grate-

ful for your timely support. If you have not yet had an opportunity to

respond, we ask that you prayerfully consider your contribution. When

the whole church uses their gifts and talents to work together the whole

body functions properly to bring glory and honor to God. Please return

your reply card to the church or you may contribute online:

www.christchurchtyler.org, click on give/financial gifts/enter $ amount/

select a fund/clergy support. Questions: Diana Keesey, 903-597-9854

[email protected].

Please continue to support our clergy and staff through prayer during

this transition, by your faithful attendance, and by your provision toward this special need.

Gratefully in Christ,

Janine Phillips, Senior Warden and the Christ Church vestry

Our 2018 Senior high Spring Break Belize Mission Trip was a

huge SUCCESS! Eleven students and three adults gave their

time, resources, and energy to serve the people of God at St.

Paul’s Anglican school in Corozal Town, Belize.

To help with drop off and pick up at the school, our team

built a substantial and much-needed overhang so that stu-

dents and their parents now have shade to guard them from

the intense Caribbean sun. Benches were also built so that

teachers and students have a place to sit while waiting for

pick up.

No matter how much our students and leaders give during

their time in Belize, they always receive exponentially more

from our extended Church-family at St. Paul’s. This was a

particularly special year that our students will remember for

years to come. Thank you to all who supported this trip with

finances and prayer. Our church is much the better for it.
