RACES RUN...

Snape Wood Cross Country – February 2nd

There was blood, toil, tears, and sweat in this race.

Dave was on Bryan’s shoulder for the whole race until they emerged out of the woods and onto the gravel track, where Dave powered away.

Alan was the leading Crowborough Runner for one and half laps until Dave and

Bryan performed a ‘pincer movement’1 on him going up a steep hill.

Anna serenely came in next. Then ‘new boy’ Steve in his road

running shoes (must of added a degree of difficulty) then Audrey, Peri and Nathalie, really quite close to each other. There was toing and froing going on there.

Dave fell over twice and drew blood. So we all lived up to the Churchillian spirit

“I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat,"

Ref 1 - Pincer movement or double envelopment is a military manoeuvre. The flanks of the opponent are attacked simultaneously in a pinching motion

The Inaugural Headcorn Half – Sunday 23rd Feb

James and Peter tested the inaugural Headcorn Half in 10 degrees with NO rain

but a stiff breeze. The accurately measured route takes in Swifts Green, Egerton

Forstal , Pembles Cross and Southernden before returning to Headcorn.

When they say it is flat is has a GPS measured rise of 6mts over the entire

course according to the race organisers but my Garmin measured 168ft of

climbing overall with a bit of a drag at 8.5 miles!

It was run on pretty, very quiet roads, chosen for the reason that most traffic

uses other roads in the area. The start was round a muddy and slippery village

green with race HQ in a local pub.

About 400 runners. Low key but with a PB potential (if not windy)

James - 1.44.38.

Peter 1.53.

Brighton Half Marathon – Sunday 16th February

Report by Gary Callaghan

My opening run event for 2014 and I couldn't have asked for better weather. Clear sky, a bright morning and whilst a tad chilly at 3 degrees pre-race it warmed up to a balmy 7 degrees and the sun shone throughout - a miracle compared with the weather we've endured in Jan and Feb thus far. Not particularly windy either, which was a result.

Pre-race prep was a well-rehearsed ritual :-Late night Friday - check Thai meal - check Half decent wine - check I'll spare you the other details - check

Logistically simple and a very well organised race. I did the park n drive from Brighton race course which was quick n easy. Well run and efficient baggage booths, short queue for the loos early on, corralled pens according to estimated finish times, and I bumped into a fellow triathlete at the start for a quick chat (before I scooted off to water the local fauna by the start pens along with some of the other well hydrated guys..) but swiftly back in line and ready for the off.

Pre-race I said it was a training run and that I was trying to build some consistency in my mile times as prep for bigger distances to come later in the year - and I was partly successful in this.

No major hills, or even minor hills, just lots of undulations, I only really felt the wind against me in one long inclined stretch. The nice people had even swept all the offending

pebbles and stones off the esplanade so that was clear - that must've been a hell of a task, especially as the national press had photos of the stones being knee deep.

I haven't been close enough to wifi with my mac book to download the actual numbers from my Garmin watch (for stats analysis) but I recall it being pretty consistent for about 5 or 6 miles after the usual euphoria of the opening mile or two, but then it started slipping back and I could feel that my lack of training beyond 10kms (basically being as much as I can cram into a lunch hour including a stretch and a shower afterwards) was telling. It became a useful training run to establish where I am in the scheme of things and what needs to be worked on, particularly with the Brighton Marathon in April and some other distance events thereafter, including an Iron Man Triathlon in July

Not a particularly fast run-in/finish but an increased effort for the last 3/4s of a mile to see what was left in the legs and they responded with something half acceptable.

Page 6: The Crowborough Runner March 2014

Curiously my time of 1hr 32mins and 38secs was only 30 seconds or so off my PB (being Tunbridge Wells 1/2 last year) but the Brighton course is clearly easier and so at least I learnt something - and enjoyed the amazing weather, it's what Sunday mornings are for! Photo attached.

On reflection, now knowing it was a faster course with very good race day conditions I wish I'd pushed for a PB - there's always next year!

Les 10 miles de Bruges

In Flanders Fields.

Just over 100 years ago the fields of

Flanders were being blown to bits and countless thousands of lives were

being lost. So it is always with some emotion that when we run the fast and flat Ostend to Bruges 10 miler I

remember those that lost their lives for King and Country as we ran past the

fields of Flanders down the meandering traffic free tow-path to the finish on the outskirts of Bruges. Perhaps if it

wasn't for them, we wouldn't be running like we do all over Europe today.

On a lovely sunny but a bit of a blustery day 900 runners gathered at the race HQ to board well organised buses

out to the start on the edge of Ostend. I could see the factory chimney smoke blowing west - east as we gathered in the chilly start area which blew across us and slightly into us at times. Out of a factory entrance we ran down the road

where everyone goes too fast at the start. After a mile you go onto the main towpath and runners get into little groups of similar paces. A few small sections of cobbles and after some jostling, you eventually see the finish line about just

under a mile ahead. A Morrocan lad won in 1.48.

Well, for about £11 you got a 21st anniversary t-shirt, a bandana, some ginger

cake plus a goody bag, a bus ride and some v cheap beer! We followed up by comfort eating chocolate cake and drinking some superb belgian hot chocolate in the centre of the medieval and beautiful town of Bruges probably consuming

more in Belgian chocolates and beer than were used on the run. Why are some races in the UK so expensive now?

JUNIOR NEWS by Dave H.

Hot off the press!!

At a recent meeting of the junior coaches it was decided to switch the mid-week

Junior Athletics evening from a Tuesday to a Thursday evening. The main

reasons for this being:- avoid a clash of Juniors and Seniors at the track on a

Tuesday evening: possibility of freeing up other members of the club to help out

on a Thursday evening if needs be and thirdly allowing the junior coaches to

participate in the summer evening track sessions. We will try it this season and

hopefully the change of day will be a success.

On the financial side we have been fortunate over the winter in that additional

funds have come into the club. We were nominated as a Community Charity by

Waitrose and also received a grant of £240 from Active Sussex. Along with new

junior members joining this would amount to nearly £500. We are hoping to

purchase some new equipment for the following season with some of this money.

We are also hoping to have two new Level 2 coaches soon in Katerina and Jane -

go girls go! - with Nicky hot on their heels.

The new Saturday junior session is slowly going from strength to strength and

there were some good performances from some of our athletes:

At Snape Wood XC last month James and Matt McCarthy were 2nd and

3rd respectively in a close fought race with a young lad who by all

accounts runs at National Level. Both our lads put in a solid

performance and should do well next season.

In the younger age category Rory Gallagher (age 9) put in a great

performance at Tonbridge School. Due to the flooding the XC mile

race was held on the track and Rory posted a time of 6.45. Coming 7th

in a field of 26 with 4 of the boys above him being much older.

Three of our boys Rory Gallagher, Mckinley Loxton-Read and Joe Allen

are all representing their schools this week and could possibly go on to

represent the County so good luck to them in their respective races.

Finally, our start date for the juniors this year is Thursday May 1st.

So if anybody has a free Thursday slot in their diary during the Summer and

would like to help out please feel free to do so. We would love to see you!!!!!

NB: According to the Beacon Sky at Night Astrological Society it rains far more on

a Tuesday than a Thursday in Crowborough.

Dave

If anybody can help out at some of our Junior sessions whether it be a Tuesday or Saturday then please contact myself or Katerina. Also there is funding available for new coaches to attend courses and should you be

interested please feel free to contact me.

Page 11: The Crowborough Runner March 2014

And a reminder of email from Katerina we had on 13th Feb with more details

about helping out …

Dear all,

We would like to quickly update you with the latest changes following our 'junior'

meeting last Monday. We have decided to change the 'junior' training day from Tuesday to THURSDAY NIGHTS, keeping the time as before i.e. 18h30 to 19h30.

This will allow the junior coaches to also participate on the Tuesday evening track

training sessions and it will also free up the track for both, Juniors and Adults alike.

We would also like to take the opportunity to invite any Crowborough runner,

"coach athletics" qualified or not, to help out during the 2014 season. The junior

summer season will run from 1st May to 28th August 2014. Coaches and helpers will

need to be on the track between 18h00 to 18h15, waiting for the arrival of the young

athletes between 18h15 to 18h30. Any help would be highly appreciated. People

could help for example:

- parents signing their children in

- writing out sticky labels with the children names

- setting up the activities

- assisting in coaching

- parents collecting and signing out their children - etc

Over the next few weeks I will preparing the rota for the summer, so should any of you

wish to help, please advise either Dave or myself. Alternatively, you could also just

turn up on the day.

UPDATE: South Downs Way Relay Saturday 7th June 2014

1) The background

The club is fortunate to have two team places again this year for the South Downs Way Relay from Eastbourne to Winchester. We would like to enter a men’s team and a ladies team. We need 6 runners per team (3 legs each, 18 in total) plus reserves and a driver/navigator per team. Audrey will organise the ladies team and I will organise the men’s team. We also traditionally marshal the Bo Peep car park check point - please let me know if you might be able to help out with this

if you would think about entering then please contact myself or Audrey as soon as possible. Alternatively if you would : consider driving a team mini bus, navigating or marshalling please me know too. Thanks. Tony Hufflett; e: [email protected] .

http://www.southdownsrelay.co.uk/

2) Update from Audrey & the ladies Team

Hi everyone,

Here is an update of where we stand for the South Down Relay Ladies team. So far, here are the answers I've had:

Peri - "definitely up for it"

Fran - "if you are desperate"

Mary - "only if you need an oldie to make up the numbers and only if there is no one better, younger, etc etc.."

Nat - needs a lot more convincing but I hope so...(?)

Louise - "Why don't you ask around to get someone faster and I can hang back on the wings?"

So, really, we need a little bit more commitment and enthusiasm :-)

I am going to ask Lydia (who I hope we'll be in) and I am, of course, also going to commit because it was such a great day last year, that I wouldn't miss it!

Audrey x

3) Update from Tony & the men’s team

Hi everyone,

Looks like a strong base for a team, that will allow some of us keen mid-range runners to fill out the numbers

Getting a stitch explained…

There are two theories explaining why we get the common stitch - BBC Sport Academy explains all.

________________________________________

Who?

Very common in long distance running.

How?

Usually people who haven't warmed up properly and have eaten too close to exercise.

What are the two stitch theories?

• During exercise, our blood moves away from the diaphragm to the limbs.

The diaphragm is the muscle that separates the stomach and abdomen from the heart and

lungs.

It's one of the main muscles involved in breathing.

Most scientists believe the pain is caused by a reduction in blood supply to the diaphragm,

causing it to cramp.

• The stitch is caused by fluids which the body finds hard digest.

This causes the gut to "tug" on the ligaments connecting it to the diaphragm.

What kind of pain?

Sharp pain in upper part of abdomen made worse by deep expiration.

Treatment?

No-one knows why, but these two methods are known to work!

Run bent forward or stop running completely.

Squeeze a hard object such as a stone.

Return?

You can run off a stitch but it affects you for a couple of minutes.

From: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sportacademy/hi/sa/treatment_room/newsid_2131000/2131547.stm

Thanks Audrey!

Mother Mary says you will like this yummy…

Recipe for Fruit Tea bread

This is my embarrassingly easy recipe for a delicious fruity tea loaf, best eaten spread with butter after a Sunday morning run. You just have to remember not to pour away the last of the tea in the pot but keep it for cooking later.

Sorry the recipe is in old money, it’s from my old school cook book (yes we did have books in those days). For you youngsters ‘oz’ means ounces, not Australia.

There are 16oz in a lb (pound) which is 450 grams. You do the math, as they say.

Ingredients 4oz soft margarine or butter

½ pint tea 6oz mixed dried fruit (I make mine with dates and apricots but you can

use sultanas, cherries etc) 4oz caster sugar 9oz self raising flour

1 level tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ level tsp salt ½ level tsp mixed spice or cinnamon

And…

1. Preheat oven to moderate 350F; gas no 4

2. Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin

3. Place butter, fruit, tea and sugar in a saucepan gently heat, stirring continuously

over a low heat. Bring to boil and simmer for 4 minutes. Allow to cool.

4. Sieve the remaining dry ingredients and mix thoroughly with the tea and fruit

mixture

5. Bake in preheated oven for 1- 1 ¼ hours. Leave in tin for 10 minutes, turn out and

cool on rack

6. Serve sliced and spread with butter (or not)

_________________

UPDATE:

So easy your editor can do it: here’s one I made earlier (when I got the recipe from Mary last week)

Don’t look too close or you’ll see that my mixing wasn’t thorough in stage 4, but can confirm

that it was indeed easy & excellent. Simmering the sugar imparts a treacle-y flavour.

Sunday Runs and Water Rota - Jan 2014

If you have been a member of Crowborough Runners for a while, you will no doubt know all about the water rota. But we are delighted that we have quite a number of new members of the club (welcome to all of you) and so bear with us while we explain the system again.

We ask all members to take their turn on the water rota (rota for 2014 is below). It involves driving your car round to provide water for those doing the club run on a Sunday morning and also giving a lift back to anyone who is unable to complete the training run. It normally takes 2 hours but sometimes a bit more.

Water equipment is provided (container and plastic cups) and someone on the run will organise the route and agree with you the meeting places for water so all you need to do

is:

if you cannot make the date you have been allocated, please arrange to swap dates with someone else

arrange with the previous person on the list to collect the water kit from them make sure the container is clean and fill it up with water beforehand turn up at the start of the run (mostly 8:30am from the leisure centre) drive to each of the meeting points and hand out water to the runners when

they arrive the optional purchase of a packet of jelly babies to offer to runners with

the water is much appreciated hand over the water kit to the next person on the list

We are trying to ensure that the Sunday runs are suitable for everyone, varying the type of course (on road and off road) and length. The traditional length is 10 miles, but there will be some 6 and 8 mile routes as well as some optional add-ons for those who want to run further, particularly during the spring marathon training season.

Can faster runners please note that you should run back to behind the slowest runner from time to time to allow re-grouping. This is particularly true at water stops where runners should arrive together so everyone can have time to take a drink and the same amount of rest before setting off again. This means everyone runs for the same amount of time, with faster runners covering more distance.

Obviously if runners want to run for a longer time than the normal 1½ - 2 hours, they

will have to the extra time without the group – in these cases, it makes sense to ask around and arrange to buddy with someone else who is also doing a longer run.

The club Sunday runs are not held on the days of popular races (Sussex Grand prix races, East Sussex cross country league, London and Brighton Marathon) so there are about 30 each year, which means your turn only comes round every 12-18 months.

If for any reason you cannot or are not willing to take part in the rota, you must let Bryan and Roger know so that we can take you off the list.

Thanks to everyone for participating. It makes Sunday runs more sociable and enjoyable, helps beginners to build up their distances and more experienced runners to put in some solid training.

If you have any questions, please contact either of us.

Bryan and Roger

Minutes of Crowborough Runners Committee Meeting held 16th January 2014 at 22, Osborne Road

1. Apologies

None received. All committee members present. Action

2. Minutes of committee meeting 12/9/2013 Accepted as a true record

3. Matters Arising Ron reported that he had successfully resolved all the outstanding problems regarding transfer

of athletes from other clubs to Crowborough membership.

4. 10K race report Kevin reported on the success of the 2013 10K.

Various issues were highlighted in terms of future race arrangements:-

Road closures might have to be considered in view of traffic volumes

Race to be held on 30/11/2014

Possible move of water station if Green Lane was not closed

Probable that manual timekeeping was still the best timing option as opposed to chip timing at £1000 cost. A slight delay in producing some of the race results had occurred in 2013.

Application form for race to be amended to indicate that the wearing of headphones was not supported, it was at the runners own risk, and could lead to disqualification by the race referee.

Early notification to the football club operating on the playing fields in Palesgate Lane to arrange away fixtures in 2014 on the race day.

It was noted that a charity donation still needed to be made to the Lions for their help on

race day.(£350)

KB TH SH/KB

5. Chairman’s report John highlighted the 10K Committee for special thanks and also thanked Ian for the arranging

such a successful Christmas dinner and dance. There had been lots of positive feedback.

6. Treasurer’s report Sarah reported that the current account held funds of £7845.04p and the deposit account

£3400.

It was noted that there were still some payments/invoices outstanding in respect of the 10k

(e.g. charity donation to the Lions for their assistance on marshalling duties. Agreed at £350).

The profit on the 10k was going to be in the region of £3200. It was noted that clarification was

needed from Beacon over the refund of the £50 deposit for the school booking for the 10k

event. The charge from St John’s ambulance had been significantly greater for the 2013 event.

James was congratulated on the sponsorship that he had arranged for the 10k.

The committee agreed to earmark £5000 of current funds for the track refurbishment project, a

decision that had been agreed some time ago but had not been formally reflected in the

accounts.

Sarah mentioned that she had identified a potential adviser about the pros and cons of charity

status for the Club/ or for a separate project such as the track refurbishment. Further

information was also awaited from Elspeth Turner about a course for committee members on

Club Governance and Funding, which would cover issues connected with Charity status.

Sarah reported on grants that had been received and also prospective grant sources. Sarah’s

employer, Nat West Bank, was seeking to sponsor community organisations. (noted that the

organisations had to be registered charities). Dave Hynes had succeeded in gaining grants for

Crowborough Runners junior section from Active Sussex£300 (Coaches’ training), Sussex Athletic

SH SH AP

Page 28: The Crowborough Runner March 2014

Network £240 (Development of junior section), South East Water £310 (Equipment). Pending

grants were due from Waitrose on their green token voting scheme, and possible grant from

Wealden District Council.

Ian Gowing had noted some confusion in membership fees on the Crowborough runners

Website regarding athletes’ membership fees from age 16 to 18 years of age. At present, if these

athletes wanted to compete then the total membership/affiliation fee would be £30, £5 more

than the senior membership/ affiliation fee. It was agreed to refer this issue to Dave Hynes for

his view. If athletes of this age were part of the junior training set up run by Dave then there

would be justification for the higher fee. Also reference to a social membership fee of £6

needed to be deleted

7. Secretary’s report Andy mentioned that he had received further information for the newsletter and would pass to

Tony, viz. further coaching courses and information on training for officials who were organising

endurance races (e.g. road races/ cross country races). Dave Hynes had requested more help

with Tuesday night summer training. Agreed that he would be asked to include a request in the

forthcoming newsletter and Andy would ensure that he received a copy of all Crowborough

Runners who were already qualified as coaches. Several members of the Committee who were

qualified coaches said they would be only too happy to help Dave on a rota basis. Further

discussions to take place amongst the junior coaches about the pros and cons of holding the

junior training on an alternative evening to Tuesday.

8. Membership Secretary’s Report. Ron said that he had now updated the membership Dropbox folder and he also circulated an up

to date membership list in hard copy form.

9. Captain’s report Sharon mentioned that the Wednesday night runs had been going well, but there had been a

few complaints about the arrangements for one of the recent Sunday morning runs, where the

run had been on the Forest Way and transport arrangements had meant that runners were

stranded without transport back to the Sports Centre, if they only ran a short distance on the

out and back route. Sharon said that more care would need to be taken about integration of

runners from the Monday night beginners group into the longer distance groups on the

Wednesday or Sunday runs. Whilst the Club would do all it could to assist, slower runners would

also need to ensure that they had a buddy who would run at their pace and that they checked

up on transport availability if the run was away from the sports Centre. (arrange appropriate car

sharing)

SW/BT/RS

10. Welfare and child Protection Officer’s report Nicky mentioned that she would circulate her contact details to all Crowborough Runners coaches so that routing/approval of Disclosure and Barring forms (DBS) could be clear. Details of the W and CP post needed to be updated on the Crowborough Runners website. Also the Child Protection policy needed to be highlighted on the website. Andy to advise Nicky of Roger Champion’s e mail address. In the light of the UK Athletics system for reminding coaches about DBS renewals being unreliable, Nicky undertook to arrange reminders for coaches re DBS renewals. An up to date coaches list would be placed on the website and in Dropbox for access by committee members. Nicky mentioned that she would liaise with Katerina Clark regarding the junior application form. The form used for Saturday morning training needed to be the same as that used for the Summer training.

10. Social Secretary’s report

Page 29: The Crowborough Runner March 2014

Ian said that there had been 49 Runners and their guests at the Xmas meal at a total subsidy by

the Club of £410.

Ian said that he would be happy to receive any other ideas for venues for the Xmas meal. He was in the process of sourcing minibuses for the London and Brighton Marathon and suggested a cost to Runners and guests of £10 per person. Tony raised the question of helping at the Brighton Marathon. Kevin agreed to contact the Brighton Marathon organisers in the first instance and would liaise with Tony over checking if a group of Crowborough Runners were available to help as volunteers at Brighton. Ian thanked Roger Stone and Julie Harker for hosting the Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day events. Further consideration was to be given to another “round Tunbridge Wells circular walk/run” and to a possible quiz.

12. Cross Country Managers report Bryan reported on the cancellation of a recent Sunday Cross Country League event. In the light of this cancellation, the final League result would be based on the best 4 out of 5 events. The next event was scheduled for Snape Wood on the 2

nd February. Currently Crowborough Runners were 5

th out of 9 teams.

Bryan and Anna had represented Crowborough Runners at the award ceremony for the Club mark awarded to the Club. The framed certificate would be displayed in the Crowborough Runners trophy cabinet at the Sports Centre. James was liaising with the Sports Centre Manager to allow refixing of the cabinet after the building work. Andy agreed to follow up the absence of entry forms for the County Cross Country Championships for 2014. (Masters event in particular), and report back to Bryan and Kevin.

JW AP

13. Road running Managers report Maggi and Brenda were mentioned by Roger as having won awards for the Grand Prix in 2013. The awards evening was to be held on 7

th February.

Roger reported that for 4 of the major Grand Prix races in 2014, chip timing rather than places would be used to award points for the competition. Club runners, not affiliated to UK Athletics would still count for the competition, but these runners would have to pay the non-affiliated fee Roger then referred to Sunday training runs. He was aware that runners training for April marathons were on a particular training schedule. It would be useful if Bryan and he were made aware of the outline of these schedules. Although all runs were around a basic loop of 7 miles, it was always possible to add in extra loops to make up distance. It would be wise to take water along if an extra loop was added as water support was not available on the extra loop. Roger was anxious for Crowborough Runners to support the Grand Prix events.

14. Club Development Manager’s report James reported on the quotations that he had had for the track refurbishment. He was seeking other quotes as well. Andy mentioned the meeting held with the Town council, where they had stated their clear support for a track refurbishment but obviously needed to discuss funding sources. Enquiries would have to be made of Freedom Leisure, Sports England, Wealden DC. £5000 would be available from club funds. James reiterated his concern about runners not wearing adequate reflective gear on Wednesday night runs. Hi Vis vests had been purchased for Club Runners who had inadequate reflective clothing for temporary use on the night. James also reported that the Monday night beginners’ sessions were going well with normally about 10 people attending. Several of these runners were now attending the Wednesday and Sunday sessions.

JW JW/AP

15. Newsletter report Tony said that he hoped Dropbox was proving useful to committee members. Those using the software confirmed that the software had helped easy communication between committee members.

16. A O B John closed by thanking Ian Gowing for his hospitality.

17. Date of next meeting Fixed for Thursday 8

th May at Ghyll Crest, Ghyll Road, Crowborough – 8pm start
