Headley’s Hints: by Pro Adam Headley
Each month I will provide some helpful tips on how to approach each hole for maximum scoring. Happy Golf!
HOLE #7
How to Play Hole #7
#7 is one of the toughest Par 4’s on the golf
course. It primarily plays right into the wind
and is the longest par 4 on the course at 436
yards from the back tee. Hitting the ball in the
fairway here is important. The fairway is the
largest on the course but due to the headwind
it is harder to hit. Playing down the right side
to stay out of the left trap is the smart play
here. The green is also one of the largest but
with tough traps on either side, keeping
straight is important. Aiming for the middle of
the green with direction and distance gives
you a good look at any pin on the putting
surface.
Good Golfing!
Dear Members,
Weed control time is here! Our Pre and Post-emergent weed control will go out in the first two weeks of February. This should clean up a majority of the ugly areas and get us looking nice and clean. If your lawn company is doing your applications, be sure to follow directions carefully, often the preemergent needs watering in and the post emergent needs to stay dry a day on the leaf blade. I appreciate the courtesy shown to all the traffic control rope. The few stakes removed and broken are to be expected. I would urge all to check with the pro shop on the rules for the wooden stakes with rope. I have seen a few golfers appear unsure what to do when it interferes with their swing. Make sure you take free relief from these obstructions. I don’t want any golfer getting penalized for the extra golf course traffic control rope out right now. The ponds are being drained and cleaned this month. I am looking forward to making a few minor adjustments to the waterfalls while they are off. The patio was awesome last fall, and with the trees cleared a bit, I think it will be even better this spring. Golf Course Maintenance is feeling pretty good about our readiness for the upcoming season. We have checked off about a quarter of our aggressive to-do list for the winter. Mother Nature has been a little kinder to us this off season and we think we are ready for the warm-up. See y’all on the Course, Daren Hazel Hillcrest Course Superintendent

The Must Know Rules of Golf Changes for 2019 (with local rules) 1. Drop From Knee Height (Not Shoulder Height)
2. Measure the area to drop in with the longest club in your bag (except a putter)
3. Time to search – 3 Minutes (NOT 5 minutes)
4. If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace without penalty
5. No penalty for a double hit, It only counts as one stroke
6. No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke.
7. No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole.
8. Spike mark and other shoe damage on the green can be repaired
9. Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position – replace ball on original
spot.
10. Penalty areas replace water hazards, and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice
swings in penalty areas without penalty, just as you can on the fairway and in the rough.
11. In bunkers you can move loose impediments
12. In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind your ball, during
your backswing or in taking practice swings.
13. Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough.
14. There is no longer the option to take a drop on the opposite side of a penalty area at an equal distance
15. Unplayable ball in bunker – extra option to drop outside the bunker for a 2 stroke penalty
16. You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance.
17. Pace of Play- It is recommended that you take no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should
be able to play more quickly than that) and Ready Golf in stroke play is encouraged.
Hillcrest Local Rules 1. If your ball hits a high line wire or part of the boxes that connect high line wires you MUST make another stroke
with no penalty.
2. All railroad ties (part of tee box on #2, steps on #3, etc..) are considered an integral part of the golf course and
relief is not granted.
3. If you lose your ball or hit your ball out of bounds you may take a drop for a 2 stoke penalty at the nearest point in
the fairway no closer to the hole from where you believe your ball to have been. (please see diagram in pro shop
for further guidance on this dropping procedure)
4. On #10 if your ball is lost or out of bounds off the tee and you choose not to play the stroke and distance for that
shot you must proceed to the marked drop area and play from there with a 2 shot penalty.
*Local Rules 3-4 are meant to help with pace of play. Local rules 3 and 4 will not be implemented for club competitive tournaments.

Kathy’s Tennis Report
Hi Tennis Players,
Here is some good information by Timothy Gallwey from the book titled ‘The Inner Game of Tennis’ on one’s mindset concerning results. He says the difference
between being concerned about winning and being concerned about making the effort to win may seem subtle, but in effect there is a great difference. When I am
concerned only about winning, I’m caring about something that I can’t wholly control. Whether I win or lose the external game is a result of my opponent’s skill and effort as well as my own. When one is emotionally attached to results that he
can’t control, he tends to become anxious and then try too hard. But one can control the effort he puts into winning. One can always do the best he can at any given moment. Since it is impossible to feel anxiety about an event that one can control, the mere awareness that you are using maximum effort to win each point
will carry you past the problem of anxiety. As a result, the energy which would have otherwise gone into the anxiety and its consequences can then be utilized in one’s
effort to win the point. In this way one’s chances of winning the outer game are maximized.
Also, let me know if you are interested in getting involved in the USTA Spring
League.
See you on the Courts, Kathy
