The past five years or so have been, economically speaking, about the worst we have seen in the past 75 years. The

platform of every politician is “getting folks back to work” and getting the economy “back on track”. There now seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel and I sure hope things will con-tinue to improve. But one must not sit around and wait until that “just right” opportunity presents itself. I believe there are jobs waiting for a man or woman who is willing to, and with the right attitude, “start where they can and go where they will”.

Recently, I saw a man dancing around on the side of Bullsboro Drive. He was wearing a clown costume and shaking a big sign,

promoting the business of his employer. I was curious as to what would motivate this man to do an unusual kind of work, so I stopped to talk, and met Roland James of Newnan. “I needed a job, they needed a clown, and now I’m working”, he told me. I was impressed. How many of us are willing to take the work we can get until the work we want comes along?

We can all think of men and women we know who had a humble start and yet, through a burning desire to achieve, became successful. Truitt Cathy’s office was the grill in his first restaurant. He started where he was with the resources he had at hand, then filled a need. His office at the Chick- Fil-A headquarters is now some-what nicer. My good friend, Ralph Longo, sold “Good Humor” ice cream to help pay his way through school and to fulfill his dream of becoming a prominent neu-rosurgeon. In the mid 1970’s my friend Art Brown and I sold Christmas trees on a then vacant lot just off the court square. It wasn’t necessarily our career path but we filled a need and made some much needed money. And as a youngster, I raked leaves, cut grass and deliv-ered newspapers. It may not have been my first choice, but those were the opportunities available at that time and for my age. I’m certainly not trying to compare my-self to Mr. Cathy or Dr. Longo other than to point out that opportunity serves those of all economic, social and educational status.

So, I want to applaud Mr. Roland James for stepping into the opportunity that was available to him now. He seems to be doing a great job at this work and has a good attitude. And he’s al-ready thinking about the next opportunity. He told me he would be graduating to a “Banana Costume” in the next week or so. Let’s be looking for him.

JoePost Script: This article is as much for my own benefit as for our readers. I go through the same challenges as many of you and I need to give myself a good ”talking to” from time to time. Perhaps there’s a little spark left in me yet!

Revised Compactor Site Hours

Coweta County provides compactor sites across the county for citizens to dispose of household trash and recyclables. Effective March 1, 2013, the hours of several of these sites will change. The new schedule was developed based on utilization and usage. Consideration was also given to proximity to other compactors sites and scheduled hours of operation as well. The new schedule will signifi cantly reduce cost to the county without signifi cantly reducing service. Even where hours have been decreased, there are other options within the area.

For the sites and the new hours of operation, check out the map at

http://www.coweta.ga.us/Modules/ShowDocu-ment.aspx?documentid=6838

The map can also be accessed via the Coun-ty’s web site. Just go to www.coweta.ga.us and click on “revised compactor hours” in the Spot-light area of the home page.

Volunteer to Spot StormsCoweta County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service

are pleased to present a SKYWARN Storm Spotter class scheduled for March 12th, 2013 at 7 pm at the Coweta County Fairgrounds 275 Pine Road, Newnan Ga. 30263. Registration begins at 6:30pm. The class will be taught by a National Weather Service meteorologist and is open to volunteers with an interest in pub-lic service, a responsibility for protecting others or access to communications systems like HAM radio.

To register, contact Coweta County Emergency Management Director Jay Jones at [email protected] or 770-254-2650.

What is SKYWARN®?

The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many Americans. To obtain critical weather informa-tion, NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS), part of the U.S. Depart-ment of Commerce, es-tablished SKYWARN® with partner organiza-tions. SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local commu-nities safe by providing timely and accurate re-ports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.

Although SKYWARN® spotters provide essen-tial information for all types of weather hazards, the main responsibility of a SKYWARN® spotter is to identify and describe severe local storms. In the average year, 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods and more

than 1,000 tornadoes occur across the United States. These events threatened lives and property.

Since the program started in the 1970s, the information provided by SKY-WARN® spotters, coupled with Doppler radar technology, improved satellite and other data, has enabled NWS to issue more timely and accurate warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods.

SKYWARN® storm spotters are part of the ranks of citizens who form the Na-tion’s first line of defense against severe weather. There can be no finer reward than to know that their efforts have given communities the precious gift of time--seconds and minutes that can help save lives.

Who is Eligible?

NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service and access to com-munication, such HAM radio, to join the SKYWARN® program. Volunteers in-clude police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility work-ers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches, nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting oth-ers are also encouraged to become a spotter.

THIS IS A HAMMER by Samantha Mazzotta Energy AuditsQ: Recently, my wife received a call from someone claiming to be from our elec-tric company, offering us a “free energy audit.” I’m suspicious. Nothing is really for free, and I’ve heard stories of fraudsters getting money from senior citizens by posing as utility employees. Have you heard of this energy audit before? How can I confi rm that it’s real or not? -- Jesse F., Little Rock, Ark.

A: Many utility companies do offer energy savings programs. The programs vary, but they often include some type of review of your current energy usage (some-thing like an energy audit).

Still, you’re always right to be a little suspicious of generous offers. Your utility may very well have a free energy audit program. The way to fi nd out is to call the customer-service number on your latest utility bill.

Whether the original energy audit offer is legitimate or not, ask the customer service associate if the utility offers any sort of energy savings program -- particu-larly one for senior citizens. Some offer energy audit kits, while others may refer you to a third-party energy audit service.

An energy audit basically takes stock of how effi ciently your home is heated or cooled, and tries to pinpoint areas of the house where air is escaping. This is sometimes done by setting up a piece of equipment known as a “blower door” in

the frame of your home’s front door. The blower door changes the air pressure inside the house slightly -- enough for the audit provider’s sensors, often infrared, to detect where that air is escaping. From there, the provider recommends a few solutions.

Some energy audits are simple walkthroughs of your house, followed by rec-ommendations to reduce energy use, such as replacing incandescent bulbs with newer fl ourescent bulbs. Other audits are do-it-yourself and might be as simple as fi lling out an online questionnaire. In any case, it’s worth it to fi nd out if a low-cost or free energy audit is available.

HOME TIP: The Department of Energy’s website offers details on types of en-ergy audits and tips on ways to save energy.

Send your questions or home tips to [email protected], or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

The Quiet After The StormThe presents are opened, the tree is down and the decor is packed away for another year. Someti mes aft er we re-move our Holiday decorati ons our homes can feel “neked” or quiet. This is a great opportunity to edit your rooms and create a new look without a lot of expense.

1st - remove any small items like accessories and lamps and place them in another room for now.

2nd - Clear of all of the surfaces - side and coff ee tables, built-in bookshelves, man-tle, and walls. Leave only the larger items such as a rug, furniture, etc.

3rd - Sit in the room and enjoy the quiet … soak it in! You’ve just created some breathing room.

Now you have a choice. You can “freshen up” or “overhaul”. Let’s break these two opti ons down.

Freshen Up - Take noti ce and fi nd the areas that are “too” quiet such as a man-tel. Place 1 or 3 things that really have meaning to you - not what has always been there, because you are creati ng a new look. Move to the next blank space and put something there that has meaning. Pull things from other rooms if you want, but remember you don’t have to fi ll up every space. That will happen over ti me.

Use the removed accessories, small furniture pieces, lamps that you didn’t use, into other rooms or pack them away for a few months and pull them out later to re-evaluate them, donate, sell or give away these things that aren’t your style any longer. Enjoy your new look for FREE!

Overhaul - This is when you are ti red of the room and want to start all over with new. The furniture is super old and dated, worn out or completely not the look you want. This doesn’t have to be expensive. Before you go buy all new furniture, etc. is there anything that can be salvaged, painted or slip-covered to help freshen up the room? Do you need to re-arrange or remove some furniture, change the wall colors, repair broken pieces? Consider trading furniture pieces with a friend, rela-ti ve or neighbor that wants a new look for their space.

If you’ve tried all of the these suggesti ons and are sti ll convinced that you need to start over with new, at least you can say “you tried everything”. Just be sure any-thing you purchase is something that you love and represents you and your family so you will be comfortable in your new space.

Massage Therapy & Relaxation (By Appointment) Thursdays Chair massage can lower stress, improve immune function, reduce pain, reduce anxiety and increase general overall well-being. Sessions are

available for anyone who is undergoing cancer treat-ment and has a release form their oncologist, as well as survivors in the community.

Learn To Knit - Thurs., March 7 & 21, 10 a.m. to noon Have you always wanted to learn how to knit? Are you just looking for an opportunity to socialize with others? Knitting can be cathartic while in treatment or as a positive distraction. Knitting can help with neuropathy symptoms, stimulating nerves and pro-moting blood circulation. Bring supplies, if you have them, or another project.

One Hour Drummer - Tues., March 5, 12, 19 & 26, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Join in the fun playing drums and other rhythm instruments. The interactive and ener-getic ensemble allows you to experience decreased stress, boost your immune system, feel a part of a caring community and enjoy an overall sense of well-being. No prior musical experience necessary.

Individual Nutrition Consults ~ Taryn Tennyson, RD, LD and Shayna Komar, RD LD specialize in nu-trition counseling for cancer patients on treatment and through their survivorship. Both dieticians pro-vide consults to help you stay motivated, chart your progress and make adjustments to your diet and ex-ercise plans as needed. For appointments, call 770-719-5860.

ROAD TO RECOVERYVolunteer Drivers Needed

If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volun-teer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based program provides free transportation to cancer patients to and from their treatment lo-cations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treat-ments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.

Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be will-ing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta Coun-ty. The training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on be-coming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volun-teer coordinator, Em-ily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

“Over 6 Years Experience Prosecuting Felonies in the Coweta Circuit”

FRIED TOMATO BUFFET“Country Home Cooking At Its Best!

To Whom It May Concern:

There was an error on the Fried Tomato Buffet insert in the February 27 and March 6 issues of The Coweta Shopper. The Adult Weekend Buffet price was incorrectly advertised as $8.25 for Senior/$9.25 for Adult (Drink & Tax Included) Friday – Sunday. The correct price is $8.50 for Senior/$9.50 for Adult (Drink & Tax Included) Friday – Sunday.

This error is not the fault of Fried Tomato Buffet. It was a production error of The Coweta Shopper.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience this error might have caused.

A design has been planned. The plant materials have been gathered and prepared. Other items, such as mechanics, tools, and container, have been collected. Now it’s time to assemble all the ingredients according to the directions. The eight elements of design: line, light, color, form, texture, pattern, size, and space are the ingredients. The six principles of design: balance, dominance, contrast, rhythm, scale, and proportion are the directions.

Traditional designs may be either line, line-mass or mass. Line designs use very small amounts of plant materials. The line material is dominate (or most important). A tree branch or interesting shrub branch, a spike form of flower (exiliatris), or weathered wood are examples. In traditional designs the tallest line material is usually one and a half to two and a half times the height of the container (or the width plus depth for a low horizontal one). The next line is two-thirds the height of the first line mate-

rial. The third line is one half to one third the height of the first line. For slender materials there may be accompanying branches or line ma-terials. The line-mass designs add a little more material to follow and strengthen the dominate line, with more depth. Mass designs use even more plant materials. There is a closed form, but not a crowded appear-ance. In traditional designs, transition is achieved through gradation of sizes of plant materials and strength of colors. This connects the plant materials and other components to achieve rhythm (the visual flow of movement through a design). Forms or colors are grouped; and there is a focal point or center of interest.

Traditional designs follow a set pattern of geometric form such as tri-angle, oval, round, rectangle or crescent. A center of interest is placed near the point where the plant materials emerge from the container, usu-ally slightly right or left of the central axis (not crowded). A portion of the plant materials is placed over the lip of the vase or other container to blend the two. Traditional designs use odd numbers of flowers with no crossing lines. No bloom is more than one third of the size of the contain-er. The materials are placed in a realistic manner and appear to emerge from the same place. The container is always subordinate to the design.

Modern creative designs do not follow the same rules nor do they conform to set patterns. They are eclectic, creative, having abstract qual-ities. The plant materials need not be placed as they would grow in nature. Even numbers of flowers and crossing lines may be used. The container can be dominant. They do not use transition or gradation.

Plant materials can emerge from more than one place in the container - which may have more than one opening. There may be more than one center of interest. Man-made or found ma-terials (plastic, metal, wire, glass, lights) may be used in these designs. Height or width may be exaggerated. Components are used only for their shapes, colors, mood, etc. Spaces are incorporated into the design and depth is very important. Creative designs may be line, line-mass or mass. They use less plant materials than the traditional line, line-mass and mass. Some other popular creative design types are: stretch, tubular, parallel, transparency, tapestry, underwater, panel, sculptural form, re-flective, illuminary and op art. The designer’s imagination and creativity are organized by the principles of design.

Volunteers play a vital role in the support of our patients and their families. Support is given in many ways – sitting at bedside to relieve an exhausted caregiver, performing small tasks in the patient’s home, reading to a patient, or spending time with a pa-tient and their family as a “friendly visitor”. No special skills are needed but a passion to serve others is desired.

Please call Mary at 678-817-4180 if you have questions about our program or if you would like to attend volunteer training.

Volunteers for Affi nis HospiceAll you need is a caring heart! Your involvement will communicate value to these patients and their families as you provide companionship and a brief respite for caregivers. You will not need to provide any medical or physical care to the patient, just a caring heart and a listen-ing ear. You can provide caregiver relief for 2-4 hours each week to allow the caregiver to enjoy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and talents to impact someone in their last stages of life in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-trained, equipped, and supported. Please call Lynn Yeager 404-832-4232 with interest or questions.

Whether you’ve just bought a car or you’ve just become more interested in your present car, or whether you’re taking my ad-vice, thank you, there are two things I want you to do that will be immensely worth such a small effort. Number one, find your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual or DVD and number two, start a maintenance logbook.

Cars have changed so much in the past few years that via a fo-rum like this I can’t possibly tell you specifically what you should do for your car. The best I can do is to encourage you to get fa-miliar with your Owner’s Manu-al. In fact, if you have a very new car, it will probably have a DVD instead of or in addition to the traditional little pamphlet. The best advice is to read the entire manual through once. Knowing that you probably won’t take that advice, at least read the Table of Contents to see what kinds of subjects are covered. You might want to note some of the topics that we will be cov-ering in this series or that you think you might encounter, or some you have already had some exposure to or experience with. Lots of people have put lots of effort into these documents for your knowledge and use, to save you time and money, and to en-able you to be an informed user of a very complex and expensive piece of machinery. Silly not to take advantage of all that work, isn’t it?

The operation of a vehicles features are usually prominent,

Car Care essentials Getting Started …

like how to set the clock or tune the satellite radio or start up the GPS. Many of the topics deal with your safety and the safety of the people who will be relying on you when they ride in your car. Other topics cover the aspects of preventive maintenance and simple periodic maintenance that can be done by the driver. Technical and Shop Manuals

cover the more detailed things your mechanic needs to know. I hope that you find this series interest-ing enough to prompt you to read the ap-propriate sec-tion in your Owner’s Man-ual and take it outside to your car and run through my in-structions and those that per-

tain to your specific car so that you can become a more informed owner, protect your investment, be aware of the safety aspects of car care, and become more com-fortable with your responsibili-ties for the care and feeding of your vehicle.

Once you get this task out of the way and begin to perform some of the car care tasks your-self or at least are able to talk in-telligently to whoever does your maintenance, keeping a chrono-logical record of what has been done to your car will be a major benefit. You can buy an inex-pensive little booklet designed specifically for this purpose or use any type of small notebook that you may already have that will fit into a storage compart-ment inside your car. I almost said “glove box” but who keeps gloves there anymore? I start my logbook on the day I acquire the car and enter the date, mile-age, detailed description, cost and name of who performed the service for EVERYTHING done to my cars. You should have read in your Owner’s Manual

how important service inter-vals are for such things as oil changes, checking other engine fluids, new brakes, windshield wiper blade refills, tire inflation pressures, and so much more. Recognizing that some part of your car has been requiring ser-vice more frequently than the Manual indicates should tell you there may be something wrong that needs further attention by a qualified technician, rather than wait until your car starts making strange noises or stops operating. It may even prevent you from being embarrassed by going into a service shop and having to try to make the noise your car is making to the me-chanic and all the other people in the waiting room as we see in those silly TV commercials.

So, that’s the two recom-mended prerequisites for this course. Simple and inexpensive, but, oh, so important.

Please come to class pre-pared!

Presentation of a $5,000 check to Jeff Bishop for the final draft of a new play on the 1948 John Wallace murder trial. NTC Accepts Playwright Jeff Bishop’s Script for the John Wallace Murder Trial

By Joan Doggrell

On February 9 at their annual Gala, Newnan Theatre Company formally ac-cepted the script for “Flies at the Well,” to be performed in Newnan’s historic courthouse. Commissioned author Jeff Bishop was presented with a check by Project Director Caroline Abbey, NTC Board Chairman Peter Poulos, Artistic Director Paul Conroy, and Managing Director Dave Dorrell.

In June of 2010, Caroline Abbey, then chair of the Newnan Theatre Company Board of Directors, spearheaded a project that for years had been only a dream: re-enacting the 1948 John Wallace murder trial in the Coweta County courthouse where the original trial took place. With a $20,000 nest egg donated by local busi-nesses, including a generous grant from CharterBank’s Charter Foundation, Ab-bey issued a Request for Proposal that invited interested parties to submit plans for an original play.

A script based on Margaret Ann Barnes’ famous “Murder in Coweta County” book was not an option due to the legal complexities of obtaining the rights. So prospective authors had to be prepared to write a completely new drama based on trial records, newspaper accounts and other historical records.

On behalf of Newnan Theatre Company, Abbey received thirty five proposals from authors both local and nationwide. The winning proposal was submitted by Jeff Bishop, then a reporter for the Newnan Times Herald and a historical scholar. Bishop’s version of the story will be more than a trial reenactment; it will be a full-fledged drama and a musical. More readings and revisions are still in the cards, and the actual production date for the play has yet to be determined. “We need to see how audiences who know absolutely nothing about the story will react,” said NTC’s Artistic Director Paul Conroy.

“Musical theater is an American invention,” added Conroy. “It’s our contri-bution to the world of theater. This is an American story. There have been other musicals about trials in the South, such as ‘Parade’ and ‘The Scottsboro Boys.’ “Parade”, about the Leo Frank case, was written by Alfred Uhry, author of “Driv-ing Miss Daisy.” These shows played on Broadway. So – we have high hopes for this show. We just don’t want to launch it prematurely.”
