Well, it’s that time of year again. Time to set new goals and

priorities, make more money, lose weight, spend more

time with the family, or maybe even part your hair on the other

side. Some will, perhaps, decide to quit smoking, eat better and

exercise more often. (Just look at how many stores were adver-

tising exercise equipment right after Christmas!) We call these

statements “New Year’s Resolutions”. We decide to do this or that

- those accomplishments and improvements we couldn’t seem to

get done last year which will now magically happen just because

the calendar has turned its page. Really?

As for me, I have resolved “not to resolve” to do all those things that I probably won’t

get done this year. That way, come December, I will not have the disappointment of

that ignominious culmination of failure yet again. But I haven’t given up completely.

I recently came across a group of statements from a chap by the name of Christian D.

Larson. His “quotes for improvement” may not seem to have any tangible goals, but

the accomplishment of any one of them could change our lives. Let’s look at them.

* Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

* To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.

* To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

* To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

* To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.

* To be enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

* To forget the mistakes of the past and

press on to greater achievements of the future.

* To wear a cheerful countenance at all times

and give every living creature you meet a smile.

* To give so much time to the improvement of yourself

that you have no time to criticize others.

* To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, to strong for fear and

too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

I would like to try (but not resolve!) to at least move my life in the direction of the

above ideals. These are quality statements and there are no pre-qualifications for be-

ing a member of this “equal opportunity” group. Every person, whether struggling,

or on top the world, can benefit and be encouraged by this noble mentality. Making

more money, having better health, starting a new hobby and learning new things can

certainly be a big part of improving our quality of life. Maybe you and I can reach

our goals and resolutions more easily if will build them on the firm foundation of the

things that truly make a difference in our lives and the lives of those around us.

Let’s go for it!

JoeAs always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Full Circle Toys and Collectables in Downtown Newnan is certainly an interesting place to shop, but for Anna Williams, it’s a perfect fit as a part time job during college breaks. Anna has had a long standing interest in Star Wars memorabilia. Since start-ing in March of last year, Anna has become the store’s “Resident Star Wars Action Figure expert and advisor”. “We purchase collectables from individuals, and my job is to evaluate and appraise them for the customer”, says Anna. She also organizes and maintains the displays of other merchandise such as antiques, toys and a varied selec-tion of collectables. She once dressed as “Princess Lea” and stood in front of the store to help draw customers!

Anna is a graduate of The Heritage School in Newnan, and is now in her junior year at Agnes Scott College studying history and Spanish. Her plans are to obtain a gradu-ate degree in public history, and as she is becoming fluent in Spanish, Anna has also considered a law degree with the practice of immigration law. She enjoys horse back riding (but hardly has the time now), acting and knitting.

Publisher’s note: Anna Williams is indeed an employee worthy of being in this issue’s Employee Spot-

light. But it certainly didn’t hurt that her proud grandfather is the publisher of this publication!

Twilight at Monticello with Thomas Jefferson din-ner at 5 p.m.; show at 7 p.m. Return in time to a Spring evening in 1821, and pass an unforgettable and thought-provoking hour in the company of our nation’s third president. Playwright and actor J.D. Sutton brings Thomas Jefferson to life, inviting you into the sanc tum sanctorum of his private cabinet at Monticello for “an intimate encounter with the man who defined American independence.” Set in the “twilight” of his life, Jefferson speaks of his greatest achievements-his writing of both the Declaration

of Independence –and also of his greatest failure: his inability to bring an end to slavery. Hear first-hand recollections of the people, event, and ideas which have shaped our country and its ideals, and be stirred by Jefferson’s vision of what America’s independence truly means, and of his enduring hope for the spread of self-government throughout the world. Dinner tickets ($20,limited seating!) only available at The Centre until January 10th – call 770-254-2787. The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts, 1523 Lower Fayetteville Rd., $10 adults; $8 students and seniors. Sponsored by Newnan-Coweta Historical Society.

We're proud to announce that the Newnan-Coweta Chamber is a recipient of the Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (GACCE) Georgia Certified Chamber designation. This prestigious honor puts the Newnan-Coweta Chamber in an elite group of 25 chambers in Georgia recognized for performance excellence. There are 149 chambers in GA. The Georgia Certified Chamber Program sets standards of excellence for chambers in Georgia. It recognizes chambers that have met those standards while offering guidelines for those to improve their effectiveness. The program provides a peer review process of generally accepted chamber of commerce organizational benchmarks. GACCE follows the U.S. Chamber model, and the designation needs to be reapplied for every five years. Being a Certified Chamber of Commerce places our Chamber in a higher plateau of achievement. It shows we have gone through a detailed analysis of whom and where we are as an organization. Chamber representatives received the designation at the recent GACCE Leadership Conference.

Encouraging Words Q

“Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain,

but for the heart to conquer it”.~ Rabindranath Tagore

Q“A mind focused on doubt and fear cannot focus on the journey to victory”.

~ Mike Jones

Q“The way to develop self-confidence is

to do the thing your fear and get a record of successful experiences behind you. Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is

a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved”.

~ William Jennings Bryan

Q“Thinking will not overcome fear

but action will”.~ W. Clement Stone

Q“Inaction breeds doubt and fear.

Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home

and think about it. Go out and get Busy”.~ Dale Carnegie

Q”So do not fear, I am with you;

do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous

Jeff Binion’s interest in International trucks is not new. He was introduced to them as a boy in Hancock County when he would ride in his uncle’s International truck. “My uncle bragged about its reliability and payload ca-pacity and I think I can still smell the oil and hay in that old truck”. When boys are grow-ing up, they will often “choose sides” when it comes to a brand of car or truck, and this loyalty can sometimes last a lifetime.

Jeff came across an old, faded blue 1961 International Scout about six years ago and thought it would make an interesting restoration proj-ect. “Having restored several international trucks, I thought this would be an easy proj-ect. How wrong I was”! Once he realized he had purchased a rare, first production year model, Jeff knew this one should be well worth a special effort. Much time was spent on run-ning down the hard to find parts, but it slowly and carefully got restored. The engine was to-tally rebuilt by Buddy Brown of Newnan. And with the help of Kelvin Brown of Performance Custom Shop of Newnan, and Jeff Hill’s body shop in Palmetto, The little “Scout” is now re-stored. “This restoration was well worth the effort”, says Binion.

“Scouts” were built by the International Harvester Co. from 1961 through 1980. Jeff’s truck is a model 80 with a removable top and fold down windshield. The four cylinder en-gine is rated at 93 HP and is connected to a three speed manual transmission. They didn’t include such luxuries as radio, heater, roll-up windows or power steering, but did include the “necessary” all wheel drive. “It gives me and my wife, Kathleen, great pleasure to “Roar” down the road at about fifty miles per hour on weekend drives”! They plan to take the truck to Springfield, Ohio next year for the National Scout show.

Jeff is a retired State Chief Probation Officer and Kathleen is retired from the Coweta Board of Education. “I love to talk with folks who own International vehicles, so do give me a call if I can help in any way with your project”. Jeff can be reached at 678-850-6967.

ABC’s Of Arranging Accessories

Accessories are the finishing touches that bring a room to life, that tie everything together and give the first impres-sion of the personal taste and interest of the occupant of every dwelling. Without acces-sories a room can feel sterile and impersonal no matter how great the furniture, fabrics and rugs. Whether your renting, own your home or somewhere in between, the following are the “rules of thumb” I have learned over the years that will make your dwelling feel like your home.

A) Artwork

Artwork can be original paintings, ironwork, textiles and mirrors.

Avoid hanging wall artwork too high or too low, they should be at eye level with a few exceptions.

Changing your wall decor is a fast and effective way to freshen up a room. It’s a lot easier than moving furniture around.

B) Tabletop accessories

Accessories on top of cabinets, tables and flat surfaces can be a great showcase for personal style and taste. A crowded table top will create a sense of chaos and disorder. On the other hand a bare surface can make a room bland and sterile. No matter what approach you desire … clear or cluttered … the way do it is much more important than what you use.

Start with functional objects such as telephones, lamps, clocks and arrange them art-fully to add interest. Then bring in the decorative elements, baskets, bowls, candlesticks, and seashells (to name only a few) and create height and balance.

Cluster items in groups of 3 or 5. Using odd numbers rather than even, such as 4 or 6 is always a dependable guideline.

Magazines and books are great objects to let your guest know who you are and what interest you have.

A grouping of framed family photos can add a great deal of warmth to a room.

Think in terms of mixing materials such as textural contrast to create visual ex-citement, such as a crystal bowl with an enamel box or a natural reed basket on top of a glass table top.

Everyday objects can be converted into art when placed on a stand such as placing a large seashell on top of a stack of books or a wooden box. Use plate stands to display interesting plates.

Corral functional and decorative objects onto silver, wooden or basket trays to bring order to a surface.

If you’re a minimalist, repeating the same object in a row of odd numbers (3 or 5) cre-ates harmony in a space without making it bland.

C) Special Touches

Search for variation in size, shape, color and material unless you are assembling a collection.

Think in terms of soft and hard accents. Blending different shapes and textures can create a pleasing display.

Add moments of your present life into the mementoes of your past.

Recharge your rooms and welcome changes that keep your home interesting and sat-isfying.

The main thing is to have fun and welcome changes that keep your home interesting and satisfying. You don’t want to have a “museum” feeling with your displays. Things should be changed and moved around so that your rooms will be currant and fresh.

PAW’S CORNER

By Sam Mazzotta

Animal Advocates

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read on your web-site about a North Carolina county board that wanted to disallow adoptions of certain dog breeds from its shelter. The proposal was defeated thanks to a huge public outcry, but what about other rulings that don’t get as much publicity? How do we find out about them, and how can we get enough public support to stop unfair pet laws? -- Jane in Missouri

DEAR JANE: It’s great that you’re concerned and want to be more active in the area of pet legislation. The North Carolina case was a classic example of legislators (or in this case, a county board) proposing pet laws based upon popular but often inaccurate information, particularly about “bully breeds” (pit bulls, Doberman pinschers, etc). The county board shelved its proposal after receiving tens of thousands of emails and facing a packed house of dog owners, rescuers and other advocates at its board meeting.

Getting started can be as simple as an Internet search. Major organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States, the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and growing organizations like the No-Kill Advocacy Center are good websites to start with. You often can find local chapters or local advocacy organizations through larger nonprofits’ websites.

Facing down local legislators is just one facet of animal advocacy. If you want to learn more about protecting pets, pick up “Defending the Defenseless: A Guide to Protecting and Advocating for Pets,” by Allie Phillips (Rowman and Littlefield). Phillips is an attorney and animal-rights advocate, and her book is packed with in-formation on ways you can become more active.

Send your questions or tips to [email protected], or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Many times over the years I have been asked by clients what to do if they are in an accident. If you are involved in an automobile collision, stop. Georgia and most states require individu-als not to leave the scene of an accident, even a minor one, without first stopping to see wheth-er there are damages or injuries. A person may be criminally prosecuted for leaving the scene of an automobile accident.

Next check for injuries, call an ambulance if necessary and the police. If possible notify oncoming traffic to proceed with caution by turning on your hazard lights or raising the hood or trunk of your vehicle. If you are able to leave your vehicle, move out of the roadway to a safe area and you should exchange information with the other driver. Obtain identifying in-formation from any witness to the accident and ask the police officer who investigates the scene to provide you with an incident number so that you can obtain a copy of the accident report.

Cooperate fully with the police when they arrive and stay at the scene until the police tell you you can leave. Inform the police of the facts of what happened and do not draw any conclusions. Inform the policeman of any injuries to yourself or any other parties.

As soon as possible after the accident, photograph your injuries and damages to your car. Gather all automobile insurance policies in your household for an evaluation by an attorney, and call your insurance com-pany and inform them that you have been in a wreck.

Consult a physician as soon as possible. There may be a lag time be-tween the collision and the full awareness of the extent of our injuries. Certain injuries may not be apparent until some time after the accident. By not seeing a doctor, you risk delaying your treatment and aggravating your injury. Document all your losses, including medical bills, lost wages, and any other incidental expenses that may occur.

Navigating the aftermath of a wreck can be a frustrating and time-con-suming problem. Seek a reputable attorney to assist you in handling your claim effectively and properly.

If you or anyone in your family have been involved in a vehicle wreck, please call Stemberger & Cummins, P.C..

Happy New Year to everyone! A little idle time is now available to enthusiastic gardeners with freezing temperatures and dormant plants and not too much prun-ing yet. Perhap there’s time to visit a public garden or at least to plan ahead for a future trip.

Gardens that are open for public viewing offer great opportunities to see new and unusual plants, tried and true plants, and excellent designs for a wide variety of landscapes. By visiting the gardens of Georgia, we are not only learning and enjoying ourselves; we are also helping to maintain and preserve these gardens. When we introduce our children and grandchildren to nature in all its splendor, we are educating future citizens to cherish, protect and preserve our gardens, parks, and public lands. Please support Georgia’s treasures.

Following is a list of seventeen great places to visit on your next field trips.
