The SFBH Foundation Board of Directors serves a valuable role in supporting the hospital, patients and family members. The board not only guides how the Foundation disburses funds in support of

hospital projects and capital campaigns, but members also serve as goodwill ambassadors in the community. “We appreciate their time, talent and commitment to our mission,” says Jana Butler, executive director of the SFBH Foundation.

The Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to welcome three new board members: Diane Brewington, Charlie Grimes and Jim Scott. In addition, at the annual board meeting in April, new officers for 2019-2020 were installed. They are Sylvia Knox, president, George Banning, vice president, and Sherrie Mueller, secretary/treasurer.

This is Sylvia Knox’s seventh term as president of the SFBH Foundation board. “The hospital and First Baptist Church of Plant City are

two of my major interests in the community,” says Ms. Knox. “All four of my children were born at the hospital. But my family’s involvement actually goes back to the 1950s when my father donated $500 from his first crop of okra to the hospital. His picture was in the paper and his photo is in the Plant City historical archives.”

During Ms. Knox’s tenure, she has served on the board for the major capital campaigns for the upgrade and expansion of the hospital,

including the Emergency Center, Heart and Vascular Center and the new Intensive Care Unit. “The hospital is such an important part of our community,” says Ms. Knox. “It’s rewarding to see that as our community has grown, the hospital has evolved into a state-of-the-art medical center with the latest technology.”

George Banning, vice president of the SFBH Foundation board had this to say, “I was very appreciative when I was asked to step into this role and hope that I have been able to bring positive results to the hospital. I’ve been a patient many times at the hospital and it’s always been an outstanding experience. The leadership team is top-notch. I’m proud to be part of the organization.”

Mr. Banning was recently elected “Citizen of the Year” for Plant City. He’s

currently a member of the board of directors for the United Food Bank of Plant City and the YMCA. In addition, he’s a member of the advisory committee for the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center. Cassandra Banning heads up the SFBH Therapy Dog program with her dog Bonnie, and she is currently assisting Bartow Regional Medical Center in starting a program of their own.

Sherrie Mueller is the secretary/treasurer of the SFBH Foundation board. A retired college and career counselor at Plant City High School, Ms. Mueller has an accounting degree from the University of Florida and is a certified public accountant. An active community volunteer,

she’s a former recipient of the YMCA Strong Leader Award. Ms. Mueller and her sister Pec McGinnes have recruited and organized volunteers for the information booth at the Florida Strawberry Festival for many years. In fact, Sherrie Mueller was the 1971 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen.

“Our family takes a lot of pride in the hospital,” says Ms. Mueller. “My father was one of the founding physicians and my children were born there. It means a lot to our family to have a wonderful health care facility in Plant City to serve our community.”

Diane Brewington was named to the Foundation board this year. She and her husband David are both Plant City natives and own Brewington Towing and Recovery of Plant City. Mrs. Brewington has been involved with community activities for many years, from Little League and Dolphins Football Club to the Strawberry Festival. “I was very honored to be invited to join the Foundation board,” she says. “My daughter-in-law and I were regulars at Diamonds & Denim every year, but not until I joined the Foundation board did I realize the extent of their many projects and events to support the hospital. Being on the board is another way I can serve our community.”

Charlie Grimes also joined the Foundation board this year. “I’m proud and humbled to be

serving on the board and hope I can make a difference,” says Mr. Grimes. “Every year we set new goals and strive to achieve them to support the

hospital’s ability to remain current with new technology and other medical advances to serve the community.”

A Plant City native, Mr. Grimes is the managing member of his family’s many farming operations in strawberries, blueberries, watermelon and cantaloupe, as well as cattle and timber. He jokes that he grew up on a farm and he’s still there, but before turning his attention to the family’s farming enterprises full time, Charlie Grimes worked for 25 years in the chemical industry in Polk County.

Jim Scott, owner and managing partner of Jarrett-Scott Ford, joined the Foundation board last year. “I have participated in many of the Foundation events, including Romp in the Swamp and the Children’s Classic golf tournament, and joining the board of directors seemed like a natural progression,” he said. “If it wasn’t for South Florida Baptist, the people in our community would have to go elsewhere for care or they might not get the care they need. I am happy to serve on the Foundation board.” Mr. Scott is a member of the Board of Directors of the Plant City Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, the Strawberry Festival and the Plant City Economic Development Corporation.

Healthy Choices, Great TasteNew patient menus have made their debut at South Florida Baptist Hospital. “Our goal is to be number one. We hope to have every patient say that the food at our hospital is great,” says Executive Chef Mike Ambrosino. “Our new menu is designed to be healthy, delicious and satisfying.”

With the SFBH food services team, Chef Ambrosino spent time and energy researching recipes, talking with other hospitals and experimenting to find the perfect selections for a new and improved menu. The goal is to exceed patients’ expectations and raise patient satisfaction scores to the highest level possible.

With options such as roast pork tenderloin, sweet potatoes and green beans, filet medallions with demi-glaze sauce, and grilled prime rib every Sunday, it’s possible the new menus have hit a home run.

“I based our new menu on the demographics of our Plant City community and then made sure that all of the selections could be enjoyed by everyone, even patients on a low-sodium or cardiac diet,” says Chef Ambrosino. “I adjusted and rewrote the recipes to be sure we could meet the needs of our patient population.”

For example, filet mignon tenderloins are seasoned with low-sodium seasoning, rubbed with thyme and seared, then baked and finally cut into medallions and served with demi-glaze. Shrimp scampi is seasoned with fresh squeezed lemon and garlic and served over rice.

“Watching TV and mealtime are the two diversions available when you have to remain in bed at the hospital,” says Chef Ambrosino. “We want to make sure that a great meal is something patients can always look forward to as a positive experience.”

Pascal Spehar, MD, a board-certified general surgeon, has joined the SFBH medical staff and is now taking new patients at the Ed and Myrtle Lou Swindle Walden Lake Medical Arts Center. Dr. Spehar and his wife recently moved to the Plant City area from Missouri, where he’d been in private practice in Independence and Blue Springs for the past 25 years. He’s a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where he also completed his surgical residency program.

Dr. Spehar was a general and trauma surgeon at Centerpoint Medical Center, a certified level II trauma center, and also started the robotic surgery program there.

He specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery for a variety of conditions, including laparoscopic inguinal (groin) hernia repair, ventral and hiatal hernia repair, and colon resection with robotic-assisted surgery.

“My wife and I are happy to be in Florida and to have this opportunity to serve the Plant City community,” said Dr. Spehar. “We love the area and the reception at the hospital has been fantastic. We enjoy the small town feel and the friendliness of everyone we have met. It had been our long-term plan to relocate to Florida, after spending many years vacationing in the Fort Myers area. It’s great to be here on a full-time, permanent basis.”

Commemorative brick pavers offer a wonderful opportunity to create a lasting and visible tribute while ensuring that vital health care services are available when they’re needed. A donation to the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation directly allows the hospital to expand and upgrade patient care programs, acquire new medical technology and provide health screenings and education for the community.

Purchasing a custom paver allows you to honor friends or relatives, recognize your family or create a lasting memorial for someone who has passed away. Engraved pavers are a perfect way to:

n Celebrate a special event, birthday or anniversary

n Acknowledge friends, family members or yourself

n Create a loving memorial for someone who has passed away

n Offer a message of support or appreciation to an individual or the hospital

The pavers are located at the south entrance of the hospital near the Surgery Center. Pavers date back to the year 2000, when the Surgery Center was built and opened. Since then, hundreds of

engraved pavers line the walkway with wonderful tributes and memories of special people in our community. A section of the walkway pays respect to many of our late hospital auxiliary volunteers.

Orders for custom pavers are accepted at any time, but the pavers are installed only once a year in late fall. Order your paver now at SFBHFoundation.org/WaysToGive/Commemorative Pavers.

Your gift will be acknowledged with a prompt letter of thanks. Another gift acknowledgment will be sent to the person(s) of your choosing. You’ll also receive a charitable receipt for income tax purposes and appropriate recognition as a donor.

Dr. Spehar’s office is located at Walden Lake, 1601 W. Timberland Drive, Suite 100. He can be reached at (813) 708-1312.

ow Gifts to the SFBH Foundation Make a Difference

Improving the Patient Experience A high-tech wheelchair that improves comfort and safety for patients. A Plexiglas enclosure for a nurses’ station to keep patient information confidential. A hospitality cart for patients. These are the 2018 award-winning ideas submitted for the annual SFBH Foundation-Sponsored Patient Experience Grants.

“This is the third year the Foundation has sponsored the program and we continue to be pleased at the many great ideas our SFBH team members have to improve patient care and make a patient’s day brighter,” says Jana Butler, executive director of the SFBH Foundation. “Our team members are right there at the bedside and see firsthand what might make a difference for patients, families and staff.”

To participate in the program, SFBH team members can apply for a grant of up to $5,000 to purchase one or more items that improve some aspect of patient care.

This year’s winners are Radiology Central Transport, Care Coordination, and the Heart and Vascular Center.

Jason Blanton, a team member in Radiology Central Transport, wrote the winning letter requesting funds to purchase a Stryker transport chair, a sleekly styled next-generation wheelchair that team members and patients are calling the “Tesla of wheelchairs,” says Lee Silas, Nuclear Medicine coordinator.

The transport chair has a seamless molded plastic and powder-coated steel frame, making it simple to keep clean and germ-free for infection control. Unlike traditional wheelchairs, which have a cloth seat, there’s no potential for fabric to rip. The chair and wheel design also make it easy to maneuver, which means team members can steer patients of any size, up to 500 pounds, without much effort.

“The company really put a lot of thought into designing the product,” says Lee. A one-touch, foot-operated brake reduces the need for bending and reaching, and anti-tip wheels increase patient safety. The armrests and push handles are designed for convenience, comfort and safety.

Central Transport already had two Stryker transport chairs. Now a $3,000 Patient Experience Grant allows the department to purchase an additional chair. “Our goal is to eventually convert all of our wheelchairs to the new model,” says Lee. “I know our patients and team members will look forward to that.”

When an entry is titled, “Share the Love Shop,” it’s hard not to smile. SFBH Care Coordination won a $2,000 grant to purchase small specialty items that team members can give to patients. “As case managers and social workers, our team spends a lot of time talking with patients at the bedside, and we wanted to show them that we were listening to what they were asking for,” says Yvette Guzman-Jihadi, Care Coordination manager.

Based on conversations with patients, the team decided to gather a small supply

of items like stress balls, pillboxes, nail files, colored pencils and coloring sheets, crossword puzzles and activity books, magazines, small stuffed animals and little magnifying glasses. Initially the items were available in the Care Coordination Office for any team members who wanted to bring a “gift” to a patient. This summer, SFBH teen volunteers placed the gifts on a cart and brought them right to the patients’ bedsides.

Now, with the Patient Experience Grant, Care Coordination is able to “spread the wealth” by supplying all of the nursing units in the hospital with a small supply of specialty “comfort” items. “We wanted to come up with something that would make patients’ stays with us more pleasant and to show that we care about them as individuals,” says Ms. Guzman-Jihadi. “I think everyone is enjoying it.”

Patient privacy, including keeping patient information confidential, is a priority for South Florida Baptist Hospital. That’s why team members in the Heart and Vascular Center applied for a grant to place a clear plexiglas enclosure around the nurses’ station in the Recovery Unit. Imaging coordinator Jennifer Cain uses the

new wheelchair to transport patients to and from the Radiology Department.

Amber Mallory, Yvette Guzman-Jihadi, teen volunteer Lauren Lamoutte and Karen Harden get the cart ready to make the rounds.

“The Recovery Unit is an open area with curtains dividing each of the patient beds rather than a wall. In addition, there aren’t TVs or music playing as there might be in other units of the hospital,” says Beth Tancredo, director of Operations. “Because sound can carry, the team didn’t want anyone overhearing a confidential conversation that a nurse might be having on the phone regarding a patient’s status.”

The team brainstormed possible solutions and decided the best option would be a clear plexiglas enclosure for the nurses’ station, which would offer extra privacy, while giving nurses plenty of visibility to observe patients. A $4,700 grant from the Patient Experience Grant allowed the unit

to install the enclosure, which serves as a sound barrier to not only protect patient information, but also reduce any noise to enhance the calming environment for patients.

Scholarships Help Nurses Advance Their CareersAs health care grows increasingly more complex, hospitals across the country are raising the standard of care by encouraging nurses to enhance their knowledge through advanced degrees.

To assist SFBH nurses in achieving this goal, the Foundation awards three scholarships: two $5,000 Foundation scholarships and, for the first time this year, one $5,000 Ann Hammer Trinkle Nursing Scholarship. Robert Trinkle established the Ann Hammer Trinkle Scholarship last year in honor of his wife in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Kelly O’Callaghan, assistant nurse manager of Surgical Services, received the inaugural Ann Hammer Trinkle Scholarship. A nurse for the past 34 years, Ms. O’Callaghan works full-time at South Florida Baptist Hospital during the day and pursues her studies online at night. She and her husband are also raising their two grandchildren, ages 6 and 3, so needless to say she’s a busy person. “I was so grateful and surprised when I learned

I had received the scholarship,” says Ms. O’Callaghan. “It’s such a blessing. My husband is a roofing contractor and I had just maxed out my use of tuition reimbursement through the hospital so the scholarship comes at the perfect time.”

Rachel Stueve, the relief charge nurse in the Emergency Center, and Taskeen Ijaz, a nurse on the 2S Surgical Unit, were awarded Foundation Scholarships.

Ms. Stueve has two semesters left to complete her bachelor’s degree at Pasco Hernando State College. She also teaches part-time at Hillsborough Community College and manages to find time for her 2-year-old son. “This is my second time receiving the SFBH Foundation scholarship,” she says. “The first one went toward my associate’s degree. The Foundation has helped me so much with both degrees. I feel like they’ve become part of my family, they are so supportive. The scholarships are allowing me to accomplish what I need to do to further my life.”

Taskeen Ijaz works part-time while going to school part-time at Galen College, where she is pursuing her associate’s degree in nursing. “Galen College is a private school and very expensive, “ she says. “I didn’t want to stop my studies, but I have been paying for everything out of pocket and it was becoming difficult. Receiving the scholarship will be so helpful and will make it possible for me to continue going to school.”

“Getting an advanced degree can be costly and a scholarship can dramatically reduce the amount students have to borrow,” says June Ramsey, director of Patient Care Services. “The Foundation scholarships are a valuable gift offered to our team members to reward and encourage them to enhance their skills and expertise in nursing practice.”
