The Church ‘In’ the World

I was jogging with my daughter this morning, and she commented, “Everyone

thought 2020 was going to be such a great year! We were all excited, and now we have the

coronavirus, we have protests, a man dies because of a police officer pu"ng his knee on his

throat. It hasn’t been such a good year a&er all.” I was thankful for the way that she was

voicing her analysis of the situa(on. It has indeed, been a difficult year. As I write to you,

protests con(nue in ci(es, some persons are doing so with great respect and a desire to

make a stand against racism that exists within our society and systems especially as it tar-

gets black persons within our country, others however are engaging in acts of violence or

destruc(on that are actually detrimental to the cause of these protests. What does our

faith have to say in (mes like this?

Our faith nudges us again toward humility, towards listening, and towards standing

for jus(ce. It also is helpful to name our inability to know what is like to walk in someone

else's shoes. Our faith reminds us that our Lord also stood up against power, and faced the

opposi(on of entrenched systems that were unjust, even those systems that existed with

his faith community. Our faith reminds us that we have a responsibility to love our neighbor,

and loving our neighbor means standing for their life, freedom, and voice.

During June, I wanted to explore with you, the ques(on – what is the church? This is

an important ques(on for us to be asking of ourselves in this day, when we’re having to go

about the verb ‘church’ differently. A closely related and (mely ques(on may also surround

the idea of the church’s natural se"ng. Where does the church exist? Or where is the

church? The short answer is, the Church is on the loose, as the Holy Spirit leads us out and

about. This isn’t a new thing, but this (me may be a chance for us to finally embrace this

reality. We are the church ‘in’ the world, we are not isolated, or closed off from, rather we

are empowered to be a means of grace in an obviously hur(ng world.

I want to close with sharing about our plan for returning to in-person worship. Each

Virginia United Methodist Church has been asked to assemble a Healthy Church Team, to

use the guidance given by the Bishop and Cabinet and determine how our local church will

use it. We are using an expanded worship commi>ee to accomplish this, and had a mee(ng

to this end last week, and plan to meet again soon. The guidelines at this (me only allow for

drive-in worship. We decided that the restric(ons and logis(cal challenges outweighed the

posi(ves and decided to maintain our current worship scenario with our online worship ex-

perience. We will con(nue to monitor the situa(on and keep you informed. Whenever we

do return to in-person worship, there will be restric(ons and a phased approach to return-

ing to worship. I’ve included a graphic, on page 3, that I hope is helpful. Please contact me if

I can help you during this (me, or if you’d like to talk. I’m also open to mee(ng in person.

You’re in my prayers and I miss you, but remember that God is on the loose. Let’s look for

his impact ‘in’ the world!

News and Opportunity from Living Legacy

During this pandemic among community leaders the ongo-

ing ques(on is, “what can we do?” Living Legacy - W Luray

Rec Center desires to connect with churches and organiza-

(ons in the valley to answer the call of Ma>hew 25:35-36 in

feeding the hungry & clothing the naked.

Living Legacy has partnered with the Blue Ridge Food Bank &

is preparing to begin a feeding program for youth 1-18 years

old. We’ll begin one day a week feeding up to 100, adding

days as needed. We also have a clothing room within the rec

center, for donated, new & slightly worn clothing to be given

to those with a need at no cost.

Become a Volunteer – Help in the clothing closet and the

feeding program. The more volunteers, the more days we

can open, the more effec(ve we can be in mee(ng the

needs of the valley.

Donate new/slightly worn clothing – Encourage those you

know to donate slightly used clothing or purchase clothing

from local stores to donate, this will help meet the need of

our community. We’ll be providing clothing to local organi-

za(ons such as Arise, Choices, Life Center, Mercy House, and

Gemeinscha&.

We have our Grocery Cart out Tuesday-Thursday each week

where you can come to the Drive Thru area between the

church and Post Office and drop off any food items for Page

One or Choices.

A Call to Action on Systemic Racism

Dear Virginia Annual Conference:

On Memorial Day, when the world was honoring and remembering all military men and women for their sacrifice to this coun-try, Mr. George Floyd, another African-American man, while handcuffed and in police custody, was pleading for his life. His dying statement, “I can’t breathe,” rings again in my ears just as it did in 2014 when Eric Garner used those same words as he was dying from being held in a chokehold by a New York Police Department officer.

As I have reflected since Monday, I find my emotions range from sadness to anger to disbelief. I ask myself the simple questions “How long, Lord? How long, Lord?”

Isn’t it enough that we are fighting a pandemic and at the same time fighting life’s other challenges? Isn’t it enough that we wit-nessed the senseless death of Ahmaud Arbery in GA, the disturbing exchange between Christian Cooper and Amy Cooper in Central Park, and the barely-mentioned Breonna Taylor, who was killed by Louisville Metro Police Department officers execut-ing a warrant at the wrong house in March?

When do we as children of God decide that God is calling us into action? When do we decide that mere words or social media interactions for a few days are just not enough?

When do we as children of God decide that the systemic racism in our society, whether manifested overtly or covertly, is a sin that hinders our relationship with Jesus Christ and is antithetical to the gospel?

When do we as children of God in the second largest annual conference in The United Methodist connection decide to have the crucial conversations and examine our own experiential and inherited stories of race and racism? I believe that everything in life begins and ends with the story you have accepted as truth about yourself and others. These stories shape our thinking, actions and assumptions about different races.

The lesson from these senseless deaths is that the fight to eradicate racism is not another person’s problem but humanity’s prob-lem, and I believe that I’m not the only voice in the Virginia Annual Conference that wants to see real change and work toward the complete eradication of racism.

As the Resident Bishop of the Virginia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, I am requesting that leaders of the Virginia faith community join in a conversation about policing with Governor Ralph Northam. The requested conversation will focus on statewide community relationships and policing training and practices.

In addition, I would like to invite the people of the Virginia Annual Conference to join me in these call to action steps:

1. We need informed clergy and laity to have authentic conversations about race and reconciliation in houses of worship, com-munities, and workplaces in which we acknowledge racism as a sin and actively pursue whatever is necessary to dismantle the injustices. One resource for starting that conversation is the Racial Justice Conversations Guide produced by the General Commission on Religion and Race;

2. Community policing emphasizes working with neighborhood residents as partners in creating public safety. We can of-fer our support and involvement with law enforcement agencies that want to work with community residents to identify problems and collaborate on implementing solutions that produce meaningful results for the community; and

3. We can encourage civilian participation in oversight of law enforcement in order to strengthen trust with the community. Every community should define the appropriate form and structure of civilian oversight to meet the needs of that commu-nity. Continue to pray for the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor. Let us hold close the words of the Apostle Paul, who reminds us in Romans 12:21; “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (NKJV)

Olivia Grieve, daughter of Wes & Chr istina Gr ieve and Christine LaFrance & Scott Higgs and granddaughter of Ka-ren & Jim Grieve is graduating from Luray High School. Olivia has been accepted to the School of Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University to pursue a major in Interior De-sign.

Katie Marston, daughter of Cathy & Chr is Marston and granddaughter of Sharon & Eddie Wayne Marston, has com-pleted Governor’s School and will graduate from Luray High School. She will also receive her Associates Degree from Lord Fairfax Community College. Katie will be at-tending the University of Virginia.

Hailey Thomas, daughter of Chr istina & Wes Grieve and Julie & Charles Thomas and granddaughter of Karen & Jim Grieve is graduating from Luray High School. Hailey will be attending James Madison University. She has many in-terests and has not declared her major yet.

Eva Bogdewic, daughter of Lisa & Dan Bogdewic, gradu-ated from the University of Virginia with a BS in Statistics and a BA in Mandarin Chinese. She is employed by Booze Allen and will continue her employment with them while she attends the American University School of Law.

Connor Grieve, daughter of Wes & Chr istina Gr ieve and granddaughter of Karen & Jim Grieve, received her As-sociates Degree from Lord Fairfax Community College, then completed and graduated with certification in Massage Ther-apy from the Cedar Stone School of Massage. She is now employed at the Cedar Stone Spa in Harrisonburg.

Alyssa Howard, daughter of Jane & Steve Thompson and Aj & Torie Howard, received her Associates Degree in Nursing from Lord Fairfax Community College and plans to continue studies for a Bachelors in Nursing.

Danielle Martin, daughter of Lisa & David Mar tin and granddaughter of Karen and Jim Grieve, will receive a BS in Apparel, Housing and Resource Management from Virginia Tech during a virtual ceremony. Her major is Family and Consumer Science with a minor in Property Management. Danielle will live in Blacksburg to complete an internship and for fall employment.

Shane Miller, son of John & Carol Miller , gradu-ated from Duke University with PhD in Finance. Shane will be joining the faculty of University of Michigan Ross School of Business later this year.

Jordan Nealis has been an EMT with the Luray Rescue Squad and will receive certification in Health Sciences from Liberty University this sum-mer. She will then continue studies for a degree in Health Sciences.

Rebecca Thompson, daughter of Jane & Steve Thompson, Graduated from Lord Fairfax Communi-ty College, with an Associates Degree in General Studies and is employed by Delaware North in Shenandoah National Park.
