ou’ve probably never heard of it. For even though it initially set out right alongside its more famous companion vessel, the Speedwell seemed a little ill-named, to be sure. In fact, before even starting out on their intended voyage, like many other church

folks through the years, those on board that little ship fell a bit short of meeting all of their expenses for the trip. So before they could sail off, they had to actually sell off most of the oil and butter they had planned to take along for the journey.

If that weren’t enough, however, they got only a short way into the English Channel before they were forced to turn back because the ship had begun to leak rather badly. Anchored at Dartmouth, it took a couple of weeks to fix the leaks, in fact, before they could start back on their voyage again. And this time they got nearly 300 miles from Lands End out into the open Atlantic, on their way towards history.

Unfortunately, the Speedwell began to take on water once more, forcing them and those aboard their companion vessel to turn back a second time, this time to the English port of Plymouth. Some say that a few of the professional sailors on board actually manufactured the leak, not wishing to spend two months cooped up with pious Pilgrims in such cramped quarters. Whether that is so or not isn’t clear, but what was obvious was that the Speedwell was simply not seaworthy enough to make the rather dangerous cross-Atlantic voyage and that further repairs would take too long and put them well beyond the safe season for sailing.

By that time, of course, about twenty passengers had already had their fill of adventure and decided to just go on home. But the remaining dozen or so passengers and cargo were transferred from the Speedwell over to the somewhat larger Mayflower, overcrowding that vessel which finally put back out to sea on September 6, with 102 passengers on board, three of whom were pregnant women, along with a crew of about 30.

Along the way, one of those pregnant women, Elizabeth Hopkins, had her baby, whom they named Oceanus. But the smooth sailing came to an end about a month into the voyage when the little ship—just 25 feet wide and 106 feet long—was hit with so many storms and crosswinds that it began to leak as well. One of the main beams of the ship bowed and cracked and they had to use a great iron screw to try to raise it back into place.

More tragically, one of the passengers, a young boy named William Button, died while on the two-month trip. But finally after going some 2,750 miles, at an average speed of just two miles an hour, they spotted a spit of land which turned out to be Cape Cod, and there, on November 11, 1620, they finally landed, and the rest, as you will know is history.

But whatever happened to the Speedwell, you may wonder? Well, back in England it was repaired and fifteen years later, in 1635, it finally made the trip to Virginia, leaving Southampton and bringing 59 people with it, led by the owner and captain of that ship, a man named John Thomas Chappell.

I know of him because he was one of my direct ancestors. Indeed, some will say that John Chappell set the family pattern for us way back in 1620 when he missed sailing into history alongside of those on the Mayflower. In some ways, thus, those in our family have missed the boat ever since! But on the other hand, maybe it’s not so much about getting into the history books that matters as it is simply being faithful to whatever task it is that God may place in front of you.

If your life has ever seemed like a rocky voyage, for example, you’ve probably figured out that in the end, it’s all pure grace any-way. Likewise, it’s the grace of God that we have a church such as Christ Church at all. It’s the grace of God that has enriched each of us with the gift of each other. And it’s the grace of God which will carry us forward into new days of serving Him as we begin to reach out to those all around us.

Oh, we’ll no doubt come across some storms along the way, just as those folks on the Mayflower did. And like them, we may feel a little stretched and seasick every once in a while. Our sails may split and our masts may creak and even break. Just like on that boat, some will die, but others will be born. And just like was the case with the Speedwell, we may not get to our destination exactly when we planned to.

But, my friends, if we stay the course and stay together, stay in love with God and in love with each other, we will get there. For the truth is that it’s not the pace but the race that matters as we run with perseverance the course that has been marked out for us (Hebrews 12.1).

Or to put it another way, the operative words for us are not “speed well,” but “God speed.” In this season of giving thanks, may God speed us all thus in the days and weeks ahead, even as we all look to the Captain of our Faith and the One who made the seas.

Christ United Methodist Church is being challenged to take a step up in generosity in 2015. We are asking for additional giving of 1% of income per household, as we are able and led by God. Why?

It’s not to pay more of the church expenses, or because “good” people give, or because we may feel guilty if we don’t. We give as a positive response to Jesus’ command to “follow Me.” His teachings on giving clearly show that our money is an extension of who we are and what we value in life. Our giving reflects the meaning Christ has in our lives.

Generosity is a tangible expression of our gratitude for God and His infinite love and gifts to us. When we give in support of the local church, we become active partners in His ministries throughout the world.

WHY STEP UP IN GENEROSITY IN 2015?

We ask you to step out in faith; prayerfully and carefully consider your 2015 estimate of giving commitment. If you are not currently giving, consider taking a step up to regular weekly giving. If you are not tithing, consider taking a step in the right direction and increasing your giving by an additional 1% of your household income. Together, we can Step Up in Generosity in 2015.

BREAKDOWN OF OUR CONGREGATION’S WEEKLY GIVING PATTERNSThe top number on each step represents the number of households in our congregation giving at that level. Find your household giving on the staircase, and step up in generosity with us in 2015.

Our giving not only helps others; it helps us. As we step up in generosity, we are spiritually enriched. We grow in faith as maturing disciples of Jesus Christ, living more fully in the abundant life He desires for us and experiencing incredible joy as His ambassadors.

• Generous givers experience the joy of giving.

• Generous givers live and give with an eternal perspective.

• Generous givers cheerfully offer gifts as an act of worship.

I picked up my kid and they couldn’t wait to tell me how Youth went. Better yet, they can’t wait till next week to come back!

Thank you to the families who have used the Gifts Unto Others program in lieu of traditional gifts this year! During the last 12 months we’ve distributed $10,570 to 60 different ministries. We’ve printed over 240 cards for Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduations, thank you’s and memorials. Over 50% of the gifts went to our Christ Church ministries; over 25% to international ministries; and over 10% to Fort Bend & Texas-based ministries. These gifts make a difference to so many people!

FAITH & FAMILY NIGHT - 09.20.2014

Dear God, you are the Master of our lives and we are blessed beyond measure. No matter where you send us, we know that You will provide us with the courage, strength and wisdom to build Your Kingdom. Be with our mission team in Haiti as they prepare to do Your work and spread Your love in excellent and powerful ways. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Haiti Prayer Team | MissionsThe names have been removed to protect the humble....

A family that used to be homeless had moved into their own place and needed a washer & dryer. One of our Christ Church members not only do-nated a washer & dryer, but delivered it, spent 2 hours hooking it up, went to Home Depot to buy a necessary cord, went back to the family home and installed it. Now this once homeless family can wash and dry their clothes in the privacy of their own personal residence. God bless the generous, servant heart of Christ Church.

“At our September meeting, the Finance Committee reviewed the financial reports for August and discussed our process for preparing the budget for next year. We continue to be impressed with the exceptional manner in which our pastors and staff are controlling expenses and efficiently managing our available resources. We also heard from Pastor Temple of the work that he and the Stewardship Committee have done in preparation for meeting our church’s needs for next year. Our prayer is that we may all be blessed and draw nearer to God in this season as we consider His grace toward us and respond to the opportunity to participate in His work through our church.”

–Darrell Thomas, Chair

“Led by Dr. Steinke, the Council and anyone interested in attending discussed the recommendations of the Action Planning Team (APT), which resulted from the Bridgebuilder process. Thanks to the APT and everyone who attended. Final recommendations are forthcoming, but it should be noted that dedicated staff and committee participants are already instituting new initiatives within the church, including a Unity in Service day, ministry fair planning, open meetings emphasis, and an expanded committee nominations search process.”

–Alan Schleimer, Chair

“Our October meeting was the first opportunity that the V&P Committee had to meet and hear from Lead Pastor Temple. We reviewed all actions taken in 2014, and with the input of Pastor Temple, are currently looking forward to the future. We are focusing upon what can be done in 2015 to drive the church forward by utilizing all available resources, and focusing our efforts to impact the community.”

–Jonathan Heironimus, Co-Chair

“The SPRC met on October 7 to review staff matters and prepare its recommended personnel budget for 2015. With the approval of the Church Conference on November 23, the budget will provide cost of living increases of roughly 3%.”

ALL SAINTS’ DAY AND PAVER DEDICATIONSUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2 • ALL WORSHIP SERVICES • PAVERDEDICATION IN MEMORIAL COURTYARD AT 12:30 PMIn every worship service on Sunday morning, November 2, those members of our church family who have gone on to the Church Triumphant will be remembered by the reading of their names and the tolling of a bell. During this important “family” observance, the church will celebrate the entry of those loved ones into God’s eternal presence, and acknowledge that each one’s loss is felt by the entire Body of Christ. In addition, the names of all who have been baptized over the year will be read and celebrated with chimes. This will be a joy for all to share.

After the last of the morning services, new Memorial Pavers will be consecrated in a special separate service held outside around 12:30 pm in the Paver Courtyard. Please be in prayer for those families who have said good-bye to loved ones this year and be grateful as you remember those in your own family who are now with God.

NOVEMBER HEALING PRAYER WORSHIP SERVICETUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 • 7 PM • SANCTUARYIf it is difficult for you to give thanks because you are experiencing the grief of loss or suffering due to illness or brokenness, God is ready to bring healing, wholeness, and salvation to you. This service of hope and healing provides a quiet, peaceful setting in which Scripture is read, prayers are offered, music is shared, and Holy Communion is celebrated. If you are in so much pain you cannot pray for yourself, Christ’s servants will pray for you, and with you. Come, let your hope be restored so you, too, may live with gratitude and the promise of joy.

It offers a place to learn, serve and experience fellowship through the art of ringing chimes or handbells under the direction of Molly Ness. No experience is necessary. To join this ensemble, contact Molly at 281.344.8343.

PRAYER MEETINGFRIDAY NIGHTS • 7 PM • CHAPELIn Acts 1:8, Jesus says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

We know that this is what we are called to do. But as this verse implies, we cannot do it without the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Join us at these weekly meetings as we welcome the Holy Spirit to be present with us.

A LABOR OF LOVE! A WORK OF JOY!SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29 • 10 AM TO NOON SANCTUARY, GATHERING HALL AND VOLUNTEER CENTERJoin us this year as we adorn the church and its worship spaces for our Advent, Christmas Eve, and Christmas season celebrations! We’ll begin with a pitch-in potluck at 10 am that will include a brief devotion that shares the meaning behind the symbols of the season. Then we’ll divide into decorating teams for specific assignments, including the placement of the beautiful poinsettias. All materials and instructions will be provided. We plan to be finished around noon. Children, youth, and families are especially encouraged to participate and will be welcomed with joy. Please consider being a part of this festive family time as we work side-by-side. If you don’t have time to prepare a brunch item, please don’t let that keep you from coming. Drinks, fruits, and sweetbreads will be provided.

AFTER THANKSGIVING, ADVENT ARRIVES!NOVEMBER 30, DECEMBER 7, DECEMBER 14, AND DECEMBER 21The Sunday after Thanksgiving begins the season of Advent. “Advent” comes from the Latin “adventus” and means “coming.” During Advent we celebrate the comings of Christ - His birth, His presence with us in worship in Word and Spirit, and His coming again. “Hope,” “Peace,” “Joy,” and “Love” are the themes of the four Sundays of Advent. We also light candles on an “Advent Wreath” and say and sing words together that help us prepare to receive Christ anew in our lives so we may commit to pursuing Him and His righteousness all of our lives. Families with children help lead us in this special time in worship by lighting the right number of candles on the wreath for the particular Sunday. Families are also encouraged to have small Advent Wreaths at home where they light the candles and offer words of praise and thanks for Jesus. Plan now to have an especially meaningful Advent season’s observance in your church, in your home and in your heart.

ACOLYTES’ CHRISTMAS PARTY AND SERVICE PROJECTSUNDAY, DECEMBER 21 • 3 TO 5 PM • ROOMS 210/211Acolytes help us begin worship by bringing the light of Christ into the gathered congregation, and they remind us of our mission as a church by leading us out to shine the light of Christ in this dark world. All the Acolytes come together once a year to celebrate the Advent season and to assemble up to 3,000 Christmas Eve candles for use in those special candlelight services. This year, we’ll meet for a time of exploring the theme, “Miracle in the Manger” through Scripture, drama, games, relays and service. Treats will be served and gifts given to each one present. Grateful thanks to Victor and Judy Hicks and their grandson, Ty Sponsel, for their leadership of this event and this important ministry.

Can't make it to worship in person?

Then, join us for worship online.

GROWCONFIRMATION 2015 SIGN-UPS NOW HAPPENING!JANUARY 25 THROUGH MAY 3 REGISTER AT WWW.CUMCSL.ORG/CONFIRMATIONOur 2015 Confirmation program, called The Way, will introduce your child to the life of Jesus Christ in a real and personal way. In addition, your child will be introduced to the Methodist church, make new friends, be encouraged to attend worship services on a consistent basis, experience many different types of worship, and have FUN!

The Way is a short-term program that will start in January with a simple “get to know you” gathering and end on May 3, Confirmation Sunday. The weeks will be filled with teaching from all the pastors of Christ Church, the Student Ministries Director, and many volunteers who make this class possible.

New this year, we are asking for the families to only cover $25 of the program expenses. We feel it’s vitally important to have everyone go through the program and don’t want expenses to stand in the way. You must sign up and pay online before December 28 so that we can secure all the items needed for the class. You can find the link to sign up at www.cumcsl.org/confirmation.

If you have questions or would like to talk about The Way, please feel free to reach out to Todd Harris at 281.690.4746 or email [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you along The Way!

“MORE BLESSINGS THAN I EVER EXPECTED!”STEPHEN MINISTRYHere’s what one Stephen Minister has to say about Stephen Ministry:

“At first I wasn’t sure about all this caregiving stuff. I mean, didn’t I love others enough already? Then I finished my Stephen Ministry training and met with the person for whom I provided care. Now I know what Christian love is all about! I did not expect the wonderful gifts of love and friendship that God gave me through my caring relationship. What a wonderful ministry this is!”

November will be the latest possible time to apply for a training class for Stephen Ministers that begins in January. Pray about and consider this opportunity to grow. For more information, contact Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719.

EVERY SATURDAY AT 9 AM • CHRIST CHURCH GARDEN BEHIND THE FAMILY LIFE CENTER • FAMILIES WELCOME!Every Saturday at 9 am you have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of God’s bounty and the company of some really nice people. Christ Church’s garden, located directly behind the Family Life Center, grows fresh vegetables and always welcomes those that would like to participate in this great ministry. The vegetables are donated to the EFBHNM Food Bank. Last year we donated 2,330 pounds!! It is also an opportunity to work together with your kids to show them where food comes from, and it is a great chance for students to get YES service hours!

No need for a green thumb, just an open heart for working with others, learning about gardening and a desire to help others in need. For more info, please contact Mark Larson at 281.261.6481 or just stop by any Saturday.

A LAMP UNTO THEIR PATHRESTORATIVE JUSTICE MINISTRY“Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.” –Hebrews 13:7

Have you experienced the godly leadership of others in your life? Would you step out in faith and lead another towards a full life in Christ? Please consider becoming a mentor for those who are beginning their lives again, full of the hope and promise of a future safeguarded in Jesus. There is a desperate need for mentors to lead men leaving the Carol Vance unit, and to help them begin anew. The requirements? Love, faith, hope and the belief that we are all His children. Because of this church’s commitment to Restorative Justice, many of the men leaving the unit request guidance from the men of Christ Church. They have experienced Christ’s love through the actions of these volunteers; what a wonderful testimony to the love of Christ United Methodist Church! Please contact Betty Waedemon at [email protected] or Ellen Millard at [email protected] if you are interested in becoming a mentor. Be a vessel of God’s love and guidance during a pivotal time of transition... from their old life into the new!

CARING CASSEROLESThis group gathers monthly (meeting dates vary) to prepare and assemble casseroles which can be distributed to members of our church family facing illness, celebrating the birth of a child, or otherwise in need of a home-cooked meal.

Questions? Contact Kim Daniels at [email protected].

WHAT IS GIFTS UNTO OTHERS (GUO)?Gifts Unto Others (GUO) is an alternative gifts program that makes it easy to honor and remember people special in your life while also making a gift to a favorite charity. This program was first introduced in the Fall of 1993 with a slogan for ‘from me to you from others’ and has been ongoing since that time.

GUO is the perfect solution to the following:

My grandmother really doesn’t have much space, but I want to remember her with more than just some candy or flowers.

I want to give something to my new friend but I don’t want her to feel obligated to reciprocate.

My son’s faith friend has made a difference in his life and I want to acknowledge that.

My brothers and I have decided to stop exchanging gifts to simplify our lives but I feel uncomfortable doing nothing for Christmas and birthdays.

And it is easy!

1) Get the latest catalog from the literature racks around the church or online at www.cumcsl.org/guo. An updated catalog will be available November 15.

2) Go shopping and pick a ministry. It can be based on their interests, your interests, or even just for fun (every Dad needs a goat!). And decide how much you want to spend (the amounts in the catalog are suggestions).

3) Complete the order online or complete the order form by hand and bring it to the church office. You’ll just need to indicate the occasion (Christmas, birthday, memorial, etc.), how you want the recipient listed (Julie, Mom, Aunt Jane, etc.), how you want the donor listed (Grandmom, Uncle Joe, etc.), the code for the ministry you picked, plus a short description to be sure it is clear and the amount you wish to donate.

With each gift you will receive a personalized card for that person which will normally be ready for pickup within 2-3 business days after your order is received.

Still have questions? Contact Debbie Straw at [email protected] or call 281.980.2607.
