Happy New Year and welcome to 2017. I would imagine many of you have set some pretty lofty goals for this year. Maybe you have decided this is the year you are going to get in better physical shape. Perhaps, you are dedicated to cleaning out that spare room

That is correct, a robot. In addition to building the robot, are you up to the challenge of completing that task in a six week timeframe? Why six weeks? Completion of the robot must be done in six weeks so you can compete with others who have taken on the same challenge. Does that sound like an unrealistic goal? It really does not, if you are high-school student participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition.

High-school students will quickly learn the values associated with time management and resource planning. Students balance the rigors of everyday studies, with the added work of getting their robot ready for competition. During the six week long build season, many teams will spend six to seven days per week working on their robots. Most teams require students maintain a healthy GPA or they cannot participate in Robotics.

With this program, learning how to work as a collaborative group, where sharing ideas and listening to the ideas of others becomes essential. For many participants, involvement in FIRST can be an incredible stepping stone to

When Your Lighting Options Are LimitedBy: Don Fisher - LIghting Specialist - Knoxville, TN

Viskase is a global leader of food casing products. One of their large plants is in our backyard in Loudon, Tennessee. The facility is a challenge; built in the 1950’s with ceiling heights below 15’

You have seen similar plants that may be food processing (as in this case), as well as hosiery mills, carpet mills, machine shops, etc. It can be nearly impossible to remove and replace the lighting.The limited ceiling height will not allow a nice lowbay or high bay. Around 2010, the plant lighting was converted from T12 to T8.

So the next logical step should be to once again convert the

electronic T8 ballasts have quite a bit of mileage left. After a few plant visits with our Account Manager (Tony Rogers, Knoxville)

In the future, when customers begin to experience ballast failures, Sylvania has developed QHE-LED drivers which are the exact physical footprint

of existing electronic T8 ballasts. Pricing is very comparable as well. Best of all, these drivers will only operate LED tubes.

Leviton Provides Home Automation at Holland Home By: Jeffrey Collins - Account Manager - Grand Rapids, MI

Holland Home broke ground in autumn of 2016 on the Breton Homes North project. The project includes 45 buildings encompassing 119 living units. Holland Home’s vision statement

SCCR may be an attribute of a single electrical device, such as a contactor, or of an electrical apparatus which has multiple devices in an enclosure, such as an industrial control panel. An

The interrupting rating of an a circuit breaker or fuse is an overcurrent protective device (OCPD) self-protection rating. This rating by itself does not ensure loadside electrical equipment will be provided with adequate short-circuit current protection.

Complying with 110.10 is relatively simple 1. Determine the available short-circuit currents. Also take into account future electrical system changes or equipment moves that may result in higher available short-circuit currents. Moving equipment within a facility or to another facility may result in the inability to install the equipment because the SCCR is inadequate for the new location’s available short-circuit current.

2. When specifying and ordering electrical equipment, communicate the required SCCR levels. Equipment builders should require the purchaser to specify the minimum acceptable SCCR level for each piece of equipment. Those who specify or order equipment need the available short-circuit currents at the planned installation sites and must communicate to the equipment builders the required minimum SCCR for each piece of equipment. Equipment with SCCRs that exceed the available short circuit current is recommended as a safety factor, while

However, equipment SCCR that is not at least equal to the available short-circuit current is a safety hazard and a Code and OSHA violation.

3. Do not install equipment if its SCCR is not equal to or greater than the available short-circuit current. The installer should not install equipment with an SCCR lower than the available short-circuit current. Free tools exist that make it easy to calculate available short-circuit currents when an available short circuit current is not marked at the equipment’s location. This is similar to working with enclosures; an installer would not install a Type 1 enclosure outdoors where a Type 3R is required.

4. Before energizing any equipment, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) should verify the equipment SCCR is equal to or greater than the available short-circuit current. The AHJ must ensure the equipment has an SCCR equal to or greater than the available short-circuit current. See the information note for the

Kendall Connection Live (KCL) Monthly Workshops are free training seminars held at many Kendall Electric locations. These seminars are led by Kendall Automation Engineers and include technical content on Rockwell Automation products along with various other vendor products. These classes were created to help educate customers on our products from a technical perspective. Over the years, we have hosted sessions on a variety of different topics.

If you have not attended a KCL before, I encourage you to do so. These seminars and workshops are designed to provide a wide range of customers with a broad techincal overview of new products and technologies. The monthly seminars build a dependable association of colleagues, creating an ideal environment for discussing questions, feedback, goals, and challenges in the field.
