THE CONGREGATION OF THE SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY CONTINUES TO SERVE SAN DIMAS, LA VERNE, AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.

“Let us not look for you only in memory, Where we would grow lonely without you.

You would want us to find you in presence, Beside us when beauty brightens,

When kindness glows And music echoes eternal tones.”

John O’Donohue

April 9, 2017 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord PAGE 2

It was Palm Sunday and, because of a sore throat, seven-year-old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter. When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm branches. The boy asked what they were for. “People held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by.” “Wouldn’t you know it,” the boy fumed, “The one Sunday I don’t go, He shows up!”

My dear sisters and brothers, Glorious God, today is a wonderful day, we love to

shout Hosanna and wave palm branches. We confess there are times in our lives when we lift our voice in praise of you and then turn around and speak cruelly to another. We joyfully tell you how amazing you are and then use our tongues to speak ill of one another. We life our arms gratefully to wave palm branches and then lift our voices to hurt another. O God, as we begin this Holy Week we are reminded of the way your Word became flesh. So that we might have life to the fullest. May our words also become flesh to give life and heal not hurt.

Lord, here I am sitting in church with a few skimpy palm branches in my hand. I don’t know what to do with them, yet I made a point of coming to church today to get them. I see some of my friends in church, too, holding branches in their hands. I wonder if they know what to do with them.

Dear Jesus, I suppose this is the way your friends must have felt, waiting for You to come riding by on that sway-backed old mule. They weren’t sure what they were supposed to do, either – anymore than I am.

You know what I’d like, Lord? I’d like to see You riding down this path. I’d like to feel my heart pounding because You’re coming closer and closer. I can almost touch You! I want to touch You! More than that, I want to fall in behind You and go wherever You’re going…

To the Cross? Do I really want to go in that direction? Isn’t there some way we can go around it, Jesus? Isn’t there a better way? Can’t we go off to some nice, quiet hillside and talk? Do I have to bleed? Do I have to hurt?

I’d rather just stand and wave as You go by, Lord. Would that be all right? I can’t go to the Cross. Will You take my place there?

I do not think the fundamental message of the cross is suffering. Christ does not suffer because suffering in itself is a value, but because love without restraint requires suffering. It is not a love for suffering Christ reveals, but a love which prevails in suffering. It is not the physical death of Jesus which is redemptive, but the love of Jesus unto death.

If the fundamental message of the cross is not suffering, but absolute and communicative love, the cross speaks compellingly to our age. It reminds us that Christianity is not a choice of suffering or of deprivation but the choice of a new type of love. We still have time to make the choice.

Journeying with you all the way in love, Fr. Rich, SS.CC.

¿No podemos ir a algún cerro bonito, tranquilo y hablar? Rich, SS.CC.

DID YOU KNOW? Each of us, as members of our Catholic community, can contribute to the healing by remembering survivors of abuse in our prayers. The fol-lowing prayer is from the USCCB. Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and trans-form brokenness into wholeness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humil-ity and grace, to act with justice. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors. Grant that all harmed by abuse may find justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Phase III Update Several sub-committees are contin-uing to work on Phase III planning. One on those sub-committees is working to create a “Conceptual Plan” which is a narrative of the possible project, some rough

sketches, some possible floor plans, some sugges-tions for a site plan, etc. The purpose of a Concep-tual Plan is present information so that parishioners can view and comment. Hopefully we have this plan ready later this spring.

Genesis 26:30: Then he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. Who doesn’t love this scripture passage? Well, it’s written for us and we are happy to get together for our own family feasts and celebrations, right? However, there are times when we need a meal to be provided for us. This is where our Martha Ministry comes in. If you can make a sandwich, you can be a Martha Minister! We need you to help us serve our community in times of joy and times of sadness, in times of welcome and in times of goodbyes. We have several teams of ministers who, together, provide meals or snacks when there is a need to help a fellow parishioner. This is not a substantial commitment, just when someone we love needs a meal or we provide goodies for an event. Do you love to cook? Do you enjoy showering people with your food? Then this is the ministry for you! Call me and we will get you going to be part of our Martha Ministry!

Mike Noonan, friend and parishioner, just returned from an exciting bucket-list pilgrimage hike leaving France, through northern Spain, to the Cathedral of St. James on the Atlantic coast! A trek of almost 500 miles! Whew!! Along the way, he had plenty of time to reflect on the grandeur around him, the experience of walking in the footsteps of the Apostle James, exploring historic sites, the cultures and languages that surrounded him, and everything else he had been so looking forward to enjoying. Both a pilgrimage, and an adventure, Mike’s “camino” ended up being just so much more! He’d love to share his life-changing journey, with slides of gorgeous scenery and amazing sites on Monday, May 8th, 7 PM in the Damien Room of the Hall. Join in the beauty, the excitement and the how and why of Mike’s “bucket-list” experience!

Everybody welcome!

ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO… Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized? Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. There are separate sessions for children or youth. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. Lord, we thank You for everyone gathered here now and for those that are unable to be with us.

Thank you that You know each of us by name and have caused us to walk with you. Thank you for Your peace, even in the midst of the storms of life. We know that you are with us.

Lord, we welcome You here as we meet, to bring life to the vision of our parish. We ask that You would open our ears so that we may hear your voice.

Open our minds so that we may receive your eternal wisdom. Open our hearts to receive Your inspiration and love.

Fill our conversations with Your grace and truth. Fill this meeting with your presence to further Your work in our faith community.

We ask that you come by Your Holy Spirit to lead and guide us to commit together for the good of all. Amen.

Opening prayer written by Georgia Alexander for a Pastoral Council meeting. We invite you to use this for your next ministry meeting.
