The Pastor’s Corner ~ Every year about this
time I am reminded of the extreme business of the fall season.
Somehow it catches me off guard and I suspect it does for you
as well. In the life of the Methodist Church, there is much work
to close out the year and to plan for the new year ahead. Each
church participates in a Charge Conference to present reports of
the state of the church in all work areas, the proposed budget for
the new year, and the proposed leadership team to continue the
work of the church into the future. It is a time of celebration and
includes a time of worship with our district supervision. But this
is just the tip of the iceberg! We celebrate All-Saints Sunday,
Christ the King Sunday, we renew our covenants with God and
each other, and we prepare for the season of Advent. There are
special gatherings, there are harvest festivals, year-end
fundraisers, Halloween events, Veterans Day celebrations,
Thanksgiving get-togethers, football games and sports playoffs.
I could go on, but I’m sure you could as well. These are all
wonderful things and we should enjoy them to the fullest. They
are God’s blessings and they are part of the cycles of the year;
both secular and Christian, and they are part of the cycle of life.
God has filled our lives with abundance of activities and events.
I want to reiterate, it is God who fills our lives with activities,
blessings, and celebrations with families and friends. It is God
who provides. It is God who makes all these things possible and
available. God!
Each of these things offer us opportunities to
experience the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22&23). They
represent life and they can give us opportunity to experience
abundant life, but they can also be used by the evil one to rob
us of joy and distract us from the very One who is the Giver of
all life. Jesus addressed this with His disciples (See John 10:10).
God loves us and has provided us with life; every beat
of our hearts, every life-giving breath that we take. God’s
deepest character leans toward grace & mercy. In Exodus 33:19
God says, “I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I
will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.” God freely
extends grace upon whomever God chooses. He is God, we are
not, we are only recipients of His tremendous grace. May we be
intentional about giving Him praise and keeping Him first and
foremost in our lives. His very first command to His people was,
“I am the Lord your God…you shall have no other gods before
me.” May we always give praise to the “Giver” and never make
any of His gifts our idols.
See you in worship! Karl

Blood Drive December 17th Concord will once again be hosting a blood
drive on December 17th for the American
Red Cross. Due to the recent hurricanes and
other factors there is a critical need for blood.
This is especially true during the holiday
period. All who may be eligible to donate please
consider giving and mark your calendars. Concord
United Methodist will be hosting a Red Cross blood
drive on December 17th in the Fellowship hall.
If you are able, please consider donating as there has
been a critical shortage of blood this year due mostly to
all of the natural disasters and I am sure the need will
continue throughout the holiday period. We have also
recently experienced the
need for this life sustaining
gift within our own
congregation.
Melissa Carver will once
again volunteer her services
and if we can get 25 units she
will be eligible for a gift
certificate from the Red
Cross and also be entered
into a chance for a
scholarship.

Invitation for Open Discussion on proposed church expansion From; The Church Trustees
As mentioned in the October newsletter, the church Trustees have been listening to requests for more space to
support our existing and growing ministries. Over the past few months, the Trustees have been meeting to help
address these needs, and with the assistance of an architect we have drafted a proposed building plan. This plan
adds new classrooms to the north end of the Educational Building, and the West end of the Fellowship Hall, it also
extends the Fellowship Hall and nursery towards Concord Church Road. These drawings have been posted in the
fellowship hall, and a copy is also attached to this email. In an effort to answer any questions the congregation may have we invite everyone to a covered dish brunch
between the services on Sunday, November 19th. In advance of the meeting you can submit electronic feedback
using the following link: Concord Building Expansion, or you can place your comments in the feedback box that
is located beneath the draft plans in the Fellowship Hall. We would like as much input as possible to make sure
we are meeting the needs of the church body.

Blessings from URBAN PROMISE INTERNATIONAL
On September 30, a dozen young adults from Africa visited
Concord church and spent the night in our education building.
They were sponsored by Urban Promise International based out
of Camden N.J., and represented their homelands of Uganda,
Malawi and Kenya. They are in the U.S. acquiring a Master’s
Degree and will then return home to start businesses and
nonprofit organizations. The mission of Urban Promise
International is to prepare emerging leaders to initiate, develop,
and sustain Christian-based youth development organizations
and to seed their new ministries as they serve vulnerable children and teens in our world’s most under-resourced
communities.
It was Oak Grove who had invited them to visit and share their testimonies during their 11am worship service.
Since our early service would offer them another opportunity, we were invited to engage these individuals as well,
and were asked to house them for a night. We are so glad that we did! It was a tremendous opportunity and we were
incredibly blessed by their sharing in worship and through their incredible testimonies. Their stories were so
impactful, and our congregation was truly blessed, not only by the taste of worshipping in the African style, but by
the one-on-one engagement following the service. What examples of courage and faith they exhibited to us all.
2018 DATES ANNOUNCED FOR
THE WALK TO EMMAUS
Please prayerfully consider allowing yourself the
opportunity to experience this tremendous spiritual walk
with God called the Walk to Emmaus. The upcoming walks
are as follows:
The next Men’s Walk will be on March 8-11, 2018 and a
Women’s Walk on April 8-11, 2018. Applications are

UMW – Pillowcase dresses for Haiti By: Karen Mathis
Have you ever seen little girls get excited over a new dress? UMW meets Saturday,
November 11th at 10:00am to sew “pillowcase” dresses for our Haiti project. **NOTE NEW
DATE AND TIME!!!**. Although we have already collected for the “Bibles for Haiti”, Carol
Lamar has not been able to make it back to Haiti. That allows us time to sew the dresses and add
to the items we want to send. The dresses are really made out of 45” material with ribbon
shoulder ties. If you have cute 1 yard fabric pieces, you can bring those.
Otherwise, the fabric will be provided. There should be something for
everyone to do. We also have labels for the Bibles. We will dedicate everything and
make pictures before lunch. Make your plans now to attend. Let’s try soup or chili
and bread for lunch since the long range forecast looks like colder weather by then.
Volunteers are needed to bring your favorite soup and a sewing machine!
The “Angel tree” should be up in the Fellowship Hall for our Christmas projects. This
year our recipients will be the residents of Maple Heights Home, Safe Haven families
and Partnership for Children We will have the mittens, gloves, hats and toboggan box
again also. Choose your angel or two, wrap the gifts, label with your angel attached to the bow and return
back to the tree by December 15th.
ALL-SAINTS SUNDAY Will be Celebrated
November 5th
Sunday, November 5, our church will once again be celebrating All
Saints Sunday in a special way and we want to make sure you have time
to plan to be a part. Our services will be both a moving and uplifting
way to celebrate our saints; those who have gone before us. Before the
services begin, you will be invited to bring special items of
remembrance from a loved one(s) and place it on the tables provided in
the front of the sanctuary. During each service, we will have an
opportunity to light a votive candle in their remembrance. Since it is the first Sunday of the month, we will
also be celebrating Holy Communion and when we come forward to receive the bread and the cup, these
items of remembrance, along with the lit candles will be a visual reminder that “…we are surrounded by
such a great cloud of witnesses…” Hebrews 12:1. Consider in advance what item(s) of remembrance you
would chose to bring to honor the memories of your special loved one(s).

CONCORD Celebrates Two Weddings
On Saturday,
September 30th the
first wedding in our
newly renovated
sanctuary took
place. We
celebrated the
joining together of
Whitney White Rogers and John Taylor Malpass in Christian
marriage. Taylor and Whitney have been attending our church and
now reside here in Roxboro. Taylor is well known as one of the
Malpass Brothers who perform all over the country and even
internationally. He is also well known as a grandson of Jan Holtsclaw,
a proud grandmother indeed. May God add His continued blessings
on Taylor and Whitney’s marriage and their life together.
On Saturday, October 14 we had yet another wedding at Concord and we
celebrated the joining together of Dr. Julie Catherine Dattero and Dr. Bobby
Nelson Pruitt III (Tripp) in Christian marriage. Julie and Tripp are both
Pharmacists and will reside in Reidsville, NC. They have attended our
church frequently along with Tripp’s parents who have a home on Hyco
lake. May God also add His continued blessings on Tripp and Julie’s
marriage and their life together.
Pastor Karl truly enjoys counseling young couples in preparation for their
life together and is always blessed by this time with
individuals as sweet as these two couples. Both
couples placed considerable emphasis on their
ceremonies being a genuine Christian witness to those
in attendance, which made the ceremonies truly
special. We give thanks that their memories will
include this special place we call Concord Church.

In the Spotlight: Steve and Mary Webster Steve and Mary moved to Semora from Herndon, Virginia. They lived in
Herndon for the last 42 years before retiring in January 2017. At that time,
they relocated to Hyco Lake.

in IT for the Central Intelligence Agency for 30 years.
Steve grew up in Penns Grove, NJ. Mary grew up in Gretna, VA. Mary
spent her summers on Smith Mt. Lake. They both moved to Winston-Salem
for college where Steve graduated from Wake Forest University and Mary
from Salem College in 1975. They met their sophomore year and were
married right after graduation.
They have two daughters. Their first, Jill Lassiter, also a graduate of Wake
Forest, is married to Justin. They have four children. Jackson, is 14, Katya
is 12, Ethan is 10, and Cullen is 7. Jill and Justin live in Bridgewater, VA.

extensively for her work and they both plan to do much more traveling in retirement. Their first trip will be to the
Holy Land this coming January. They are taking full advantage of the slower pace of life now that they are not
living in the Washington, DC metro area. They are avid Wake Forest fans and enjoy being outside as much as
possible.
Steve grew up in the Episcopalian church and Mary as a Baptist; they tried several denominations before
becoming United Methodist. Most of their married life, they were affiliated with a small church in Herndon, VA.
However, for the past 10 years they attended a large church in Northern Virginia. They are very happy to be back
in a small church where fellowship and community are evident every time they step through the door. Please
continue to welcome Steve and Mary into our family.
