The comprehensive iphone Siri Handbook

This book is presented free of charge as a way of introducing you to GadChick —a new(free) magazine and blog devoted to girls in love with gadgets, and / or guys in love withgirls in love with gadgets. We hope you enjoy this short handbook, and that you consider stopping byWe are still in our infancy, but we promise you‟ll find plenty of great  stories.

And if you happen to be an advertiser or a talented young female writer,

Address BookSiri is a learning app; that means you have to teach Siri what it needs to know aboutyou. If you want Siri to call your mom, then you first need to tell Siri who people are.So, for example, tell Siri, “Oprah is my sister” and she will remember that Oprah is your sister. So instead of saying “Call Oprah” you can say “Call my sister.” Assuming your  sister has two phone numbers—one for work and one for home—you can also say “Call my sister at home” or “Call my sister at work.”

Try it out for any of your friends or colleagues. It will associate just about any term withaperson; so you can say “Jesse is my boss” or “Jean is my daughter.” You can even say, “Husband is my dog”—but seriously, if you want to say “Call my dog” to get a hold of  your husband, then it might be time to see a marriage therapist.

Now that you have your contacts set up, here are some common Siri phrases to askaboutthem:What‟s [insert name] address? What is[insert name] phone number? When is [insert name] birthday?Show [insert name] home email address

Finding ContactsFinding people is pretty self explanatory on Siri. Just say “Show [insert name]” and you are done. But you can also find groups of people by saying “Find people named [insert name].”

This comes in handy finding family members with the same last name; so if you want tofind anyone with the last name Corleone, then just say “Find people named Corleone”  You can also say “Who is [insert relationship here].” So if you have a tendency of  having wild nights, you can say “Megan is designated driver” and anytime you have had one to many to drink, just have your friend ask Siri “Who is designated driver” and you  are set.

AlarmsSay goodbye to your nightstand alarm, and say hello to Siri. The following commandscanbe used to set alarms on your phone with Siri:Wake me up [insert time here]

Set an alarm for [insert time here]Wake me up in [insert time here] hoursChange my [insert time here] alarm to [insert time here]Turn off my [insert time here] alarmDelete my [insert time here] alarmIf you are too lazy to look at your phone and see that it is 7:00am, then Siri will do it for you by asking, “What time is it?” Unless you are hard of seeing, that command is sort of useless, but these ones couldcomein handy:What time is it in [insert country here]?

What is today's date? What‟s the date this [insert day here]?

And finally, you have the timer feature of the alarm. For that, use these commands:“Set the timer for [insert number of minutes here]” “Show the timer” “Pause the timer” “Resume” “Reset the timer”

without knowing the commands—like how do you start a new paragraph? Fortunately, these commands work both in Siri and when using the speak feature to send a text or anemail.Say the following commands to add punctuation:

MapsMaps. A lost persons best friend. Try out these helpful map commands:“How do I get home?” “Show [insert address]” “Directions to [insert name] work” Looking for a local business. Try out these:

“Find [coffee/pizza/market/etc] near me” “Where is [name of business]?” “Find [insert business] in [insert city]” “Find [insert business] within walking distance” “Good [insert restaurant] around here”

MusiciTunes is great. Siri makes it better. Instead of hunting for music, now all you have to doissay it. Do you want some Indie to blast through your phone? Say “Play some Indie” or  any other desired genre. To look for Beatles music in your music library, just say “Play  Beatles.” You can do the same for albums, songs and groups. Just say “Play” and insert

what you want. If you have play a certain playlist, you can also say the playlist and it willdo that too. While your playing music, use these commands to control it:“Play” “Pause” “Shuffle” “Skip”

PhoneSiri‟s phone feature is pretty simple. Want to call Lisa? Say “Call Lisa”; if Lisa has a

mobile and a work phone, then say call “Call Lisa‟s mobile” to call her mobile. And if Lisahas no phone, then ask Siri for instructions on how to build Robert Hooke‟s Tin Can  Telephone; and while you are at it, ask her who the heck Robert Hooke is (hint, wewouldn‟t have Microscopy without him! Darn it now you have to look up Microscopy

too!)If all you have is a numeric number (seriously, you actually know numeric numbers? Idon‟t even know my mom‟s numeric number; last time someone asked me for her number,I looked in my address book and all I could find was a button to dial her), then just say“Call” and say the number. Finally, you can FaceTime with all your hip friends by simply saying “FaceTime” and the friends name—as an added bonus, call your mom…if she‟s like my mom, then she‟ll put the phone to her ear while she talks on FaceTime, and you‟ll get a great view of her  canals.

Reminders

Do you ever wish your phone would remind you to breathe? I do! And now it does.Everyten seconds. But Siri does more than remind to breathe. It can use your phone's GPS toremind you do things as soon as you leave the house, the office, the gym—you name itand it does it. Just say “Remind me to” what you need a reminder for, and add “When I leave” wherever you are leaving. Same is true if you want a reminder when you get  somewhere. For fun, set your friends phone to remind them that they love you everytimethey leave or enter the house.

NotesNotes aren‟t exactly reminders, but they have a lot of the same functions. Just say the

word “Note” and say what you want to make note of—someone‟s appearance, someone‟s smell—Siri won‟t judge you for judging others! Note‟s are also a great way to make lists,  and best of all, notes can be emailed.

Searching the WebForget Google! You have Siri! Siri can Google anything…wait, don‟t forget Google yet.  Regardless of what you are looking for, just say “Search” and say what you want tosearchfor. We all love brands. If you are Google girl, then say “Google” instead of search, and itwill

search Google. Are you a Bing girl? Really? What are you doing with an iPhone then?Regardless your odd intentions for Binging something, just say “Bing” and whatever you  are looking for. Finally, if you want to see spotty research articles that may or may notcontain facts, just say “Wikipedia” and whatever you want to search for.

StalkingYour Friends Anyone else a little creeped out by the new feature on the iPhone that keeps track of your

friends (also known as “keeping your significant other on a leash”)? If you are loving this  handy feature of stalking your friends, then you‟ll also love these Siri commands.  “Where‟s [Insert Name]?” “Where are all my friends?” “Who is here?”

“Who is near me?” To all those insecure women, you‟ll find comfort knowing you can ask “Is my husband at  home?” But if you‟re that insecure, then perhaps you should add “with my best friend” to  the end of that question.

Stocks Apple really showcased this as a top feature of Siri. I suppose if you like stock, it is. Butif you are that addicted to a ticker, then I‟m sure you have an app for it. If you just can‟tgetenough of stock, then maybe you can buy me lunch, because I bet you are bankingmore

than me—did I tell you how much money I made writing this free book? Try nothing—soseriously, spare a sister a dime! I digress, if you really are into stocks, then these arethecommands for you:“What‟s [insert business name] stock price?” “What is [insert business name] PE ratio?” “What did [insert business name] close at today?” “How is the Nikkei doing?” “How are the markets doing?” “What is the Dow at?”

TextingBefore Siri, I used to drive recklessly by texting with my right hand (my left hand was, of course, holding the book I was reading), so thanks to Siri, I no longer run over rodents!Use the commands in this section to help you text hands-free.

Read my new messages“Read it again”

Sending Texts“Tell [insert name] I‟ll be right there” “Send a message to [insert name]” “Send a message to [insert name] saying [insert date]” “Send a message to [insert name]on her mobile saying I‟ll be late” “Send a message to [insert number]”

“Text [insert name]and [insert name] [insert comment]?” Replying to Texts“Reply [insert comment]” “Tell him / her I‟ll be there in [insert number of minutes]” “Call him / her”

WeatherWho needs Al Roker when you have Siri? (It would be nice and I‟d be willing to pay to

have Al Roker voice instead of Siri‟s, however) Try these commands to turn your  phoneinto a meteorologist:“What‟s the weather for today?” “What‟s the weather for tomorrow?” “Will it rain in [insert city] this week?”

“Check next week‟s forecast for [insert city]” “What‟s the forecast for this evening?” “How‟s the weather in [insert city] right now?” “How hot will it be in [insert city] this weekend?” “What‟s the high for [insert city] on Thursday?” “What‟s the temperature outside?” “How windy is it out there?” “When is sunrise in [insert city]?”

Who the Heck is Wolfram Alpha and What Did He Do WithSiri?Wolfram Alpha (www.wolframalpha.com) began in 2009 and was the talk of the Internet

when it launched until people started saying, “Isn't that what Google does?” It‟s different  from Google, but that didn't matter. It may not be the page people go to for answers, but it is the technology a lot of webpagesuse—including Bing.com. Apple caught onto it‟s potential and they too implemented it— into Siri. Try a few of these commands to get immediate answers:“How many calories in a muffin?” “What‟s the square root of 24?” “How many dollars is €79?” “What was the Best Picture of 1988?” “What‟s the population of England?”

“What is an 18% tip on $55.46 for three people?”  “How many days until Christmas?” “How far away is the Sun?” “When is the next solar eclipse?” “How long do cats live?” “How deep is the Pacific ocean?” “What‟s the price of gasoline in Texas?”

Funny Things to Ask SiriNeed a laugh? Siri may not be the next Arthur Askey (check him out already), butaskingthese questions might get a slight chuckle from you:“Will you marry me?” “Is Apple or Microsoft Better?” “What‟s the meaning of life” “Open the pod bay doors” “Is (INSERT NAME HERE) sexy” “I need to hide a body” “Tell me a joke”

“What do you look like” “Will you marry me?”

ConclusionThe best thing about Siri is it‟s always evolving.
