ow that you’ve acceptedthe challenge ofbringing Carmen andher gang to justice, there

are a few things you need to know. Here are the basics on how to bean effective detective.

Object of the GameA wily crook from V.I.L.E. (VillainsInternational League of Evil) has stolen avalued treasure from one of the 50 statesor Washington, D.C. The thief is headedto a hideout somewhere in the USA,zigzagging across the country to try toshake you from the chase. There are 15crooks in Carmen’s gang, and you willpursue just one of them per case.

To win a case you must:

• Identify the thief and obtain an arrestwarrant.

AND

• Track the crook to his or her hideoutbefore time runs out.

☛ Note: The case isn’t solved when you

obtain a warrant. You must follow thevillain until you can catch and arrest himor her. If you have a warrant for thecorrect culprit, then you’ve got an iron-

clad case. But, if you arrest a criminalwithout first obtaining a valid warrant, your case will be thrown out of court!

Signing InTo start your first case, sign in on theDataminder with your name or favoritealias. You can either type the name or usethe mouse to click on the letters to spellthe name. Once your name is entered, click on the TRANSMIT button on theDataminder to send your data to ACMEHeadquarters.

Your AssignmentAfter you sign in, The Chief will contactyou from ACME Headquarters to briefyou on the case. The Case File will slideup with information on the stolen item, your rank, and your deadlinefor solving the case.

Review the Case File, thenclick on the TRAVELbutton on the Videophoneto call ACME TravelService. You will travel tothe scene of the crime tobegin snooping around.

to obtain the corresponding clues. Someof the clues will point to the crook’s nextdestination, while others will help youidentify which member of Carmen’s gangyou’re pursuing.

Investigating a clue or talking to a witnesstakes up a little of your precious time, soyou must decide whether to investigate allsources of information or just some ofthem. It’s a tough call, but that’s whyyou’re here.

Obtaining a WarrantGetting an arrest warrant is a two-stepprocess. First, collect and record all theavailable evidence about the crook’sidentity. To record evidence, click on theEVIDENCE button. Second, once youthink you have enough evidence toidentify a suspect, call in for a warrantusing the TRANSMIT button. You musthave a valid warrant to make an arrestwhen you finally reach the thief’s hideout.

If you do obtain a valid warrant, you’reonly partway there! You still need to trackthe crook to his or her hideout. Keepmoving, Gumshoe, the trail’s gettingcolder every minute!

☛ Note: When recording evidence, choose the character traits carefully. Ifyou enter wrong information, you willwind up identifying the wrong crook. Ifyou obtain a warrant for the wrongsuspect, you’ll continue your hunt, butwhen you finally track down the suspect,he or she will get away since your warrantis not valid.

Traveling to the Next Location When you are ready to travel to the nextlocation, click on the TRAVEL button on

the Videophone tocontact ACMETravel Service. Amap of the U.S. willappear, showing all thepossible destinationsfrom your currentlocation. The list ofdestinations will also appearin the Dataminder. Click on your chosendestination (either on the map or in theDataminder), and you will immediatelytravel to that destination.

Take note, Rookie. You can use theTRAVEL button to preview the list ofpossible destinations without actuallytraveling to any of them. You can get backto the Dataminder by clicking on theCANCEL button.

Upon your arrival at a location, theDataminder will give a description of thestate to help familiarize you with yournew surroundings. Take a minute to readthe description; you never know when itmight come in handy.

Catching Up with the CriminalWhen you arrive at a new location, one ofthree things must be true:

1) The crook stopped at this place on theway to the hideout. If so, then you’ll findclues here, and you’ll see one of Carmen’slocal henchmen.

2) The crook did not visit this place. If so,the local witnesses won’t know a thing. You need to travel to another location, orreturn to your last location to re-questionwitnesses or re-examine the evidence.

3) This is the crook’s final destination andthe hideout is nearby. If so, then instead

of a clue you will get warnings of danger. If you do not have a warrant yet, then youbetter get one really quick!

PromotionsYou begin your career at the ACMEDetective Agency with the rank ofGumshoe. As you capture members ofCarmen’s gang and put them behind bars, you’ll be promoted through a series ofeight ranks until you reach Super Sleuth. At this level, you’ll get a crack at catchingCarmen herself. If you do catch her, thenyou’ll be inducted into the Hall of Fame. You can continue to play under the samename for as long as you like, but insteadof receiving additional promotions you’llreceive a commendation after every tenadditional successful cases. Each rankrequires you to solve a specific number of cases before you earn your nextpromotion:

Rank Cases Solved

Gumshoe 0Investigator 1Senior Investigator 5Inspector 10Senior Inspector 16Detective 23Master Detective 31Super Sleuth 40

Rising to the Challenges as You Rise in RankAs you rise in rank, your cases graduallygrow more challenging and your culprits, more elusive. The clues you investigate asa high-level detective will be considerablymore demanding than the ones youdiscovered as a Gumshoe.

Periodically, your efforts to imprison all

of Carmen’s gang will be thwarted by amajor jailbreak. When this happens, keepa stiff upper lip and put them all back inthe slammer where they belong!

Ending a GameWhen you’re ready to knock off for awhile, click on the POWER button. Amessage will appear in the Datamindertelling you to click TRANSMIT to stopplaying or CANCEL to continue playing.

You can also leave the game by holdingdown the Control key and pressing Q. Onthe Macintosh, hold down the Commandkey (C) and press Q.

If you leave the game before you’venabbed the crook, the case you’ve beenworking on will automatically be savedunder your name or alias.

If you don’t want to leave the game butyou do want to sign in as a differentdetective, just fly back to ACMEHeadquarters. Once you arrive, clickCANCEL to assign a new detective.

Resuming a Saved GameWhen you have saved a game, the nexttime you sign in with your name or aliasyou’ll be asked if you would like tocontinue the saved case. If yes, click onthe TRANSMIT button and pick upwhere you left off. If no, click on theCANCEL button and the saved case willbe wiped off the books. Don’t worry, though ––the rest of your detective careerhistory will remain in ACME’s records.

WILD WILL

This bowlegged cowboy may be an old-timer, but if there’s one thing Wild Willknows better than cows, it’s crooks. Sure,he’s seen lots of sunsets over thesagebrush, but his instincts for spottingvarmints are still as sharp as ever.

DUANE BWUANE

“Party on!” That’s Duane’s philosophy oflife. But when he’s not distracted by sometotally radical wave, this excellent dudekeeps us well supplied with clues he picksup in the most unexpected places.

MICK DONALD

Mick has inhaled vast amounts of greasyfumes during his career as a short ordercook. Maybe that’s why he recognizes aslippery character when he sees one. Be-tween frying up burgers and bossingaround the busboys, Mick feeds us plentyof hot tips.

TOLLTAKER TINA

Tina just loves her job collecting tolls onthe New Jersey turnpike. What betteroccupation for a world class busybody?Anyone who passes by her booth is sub-ject to her intense scrutiny, and Tina mis-ses nothing, not even that discarded can-dy wrapper beneath the steering wheel.

“VALLEY” SALLY

ACME signed on Sally as an informant, despite her tendency to run off at theslightest hint of a shoe sale. A notorioussnoop, she has a spotless record ofreporting the fashion and groomingdetails of the crooks.

HERBERT HEEBERG

Mild-mannered Herb fades into thewoodwork in just about any setting, a realplus for an informant. Under his goofyfacade is a man with a razor-sharp wit. Orso he says.

PROFESSOR BOB

The newest of ACME’s undercoverinformants, the Prof came to us withstrong credentials: a Ph.D. incriminology, an M.A. in speleology, and aB.S. in marine biology. And he still findstime to write to his mother.
