The groundbreaking new Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention is a small-group, supplementary intervention program designed for young children who struggle with reading and writing. Designed to bring children up to grade-level performance in as few as 18-24 weeks, LLI is a powerful, research-based early intervention program that can prevent literacy difficulties before they turn into long-term challenges.

Professional Support for LLI includes three days of training (two days of intensive learning plus one follow-up day) to give participants an in depth understanding of the LLI systems:

• LLI Orange System, Levels A-C (Kindergarten), 70 Lessons with 70 original titles• LLI Green System, Levels A-J (Grade 1), 110 Lessons with 110 original titles• LLI Blue System, Levels C-N (Grade 2), 120 Lessons with 120 original titles

Topics within the three-day Professional Support curriculum include:

• Overview of the Lesson Framework• Understanding the demands of texts• Assessing and grouping students• Teaching within the LLI Lessons• Using the Prompting Guide• Documenting progress

In addition to learning how to implement LLI lessons, participants will deepen their understanding of many research-based techniques to help struggling readers make accelerated progress.

Leveled Literacy Intervention - IntermediateBased on Work by Fountas and Pinnell Targeting Grades 3-5

The newly released Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) Red, Gold, and Purple systems are designed for students in grades 3, 4 and 5 who are reading below grade level. These systems may also be used to help students at higher grade levels who are reading below level W. Designed to bring students up to grade-level performance in as little as 18-24 weeks, LLI Intermediate Systems deliver powerful, research-based intervention geared specifically for intermediate students who are lagging behind their peers in literacy learning. The intervention is designed to take place in addition to classroom literacy instruction.

In this seminar, participants will receive three days of intensive training (two days of start-up training and one follow-up day) on the LLI Red, Gold, and Purple systems and will learn specific strategies to address the needs of struggling older readers. In addition to an overview of the components and implementation of new LLI Red, Gold, and Purple systems, this program delves in to the advanced routines needed for intermediate students. These routines include a focus on comprehension, vocabulary development, and fluency, as well as phonics and word study principles, book discussion formats, writing about reading routines, novel study units, test taking study, and silent reading.

This three-day training includes:• An introduction to the LLI Red, Gold, and Purple systems with special attention on what the research has shown

to be effective instruction for older, struggling readers.• Clear rationales for the instructional procedures in the LLI Red, Gold, and Purple systems–comprehension,

vocabulary development, fluency, phonics/word study, and writing about reading–and how they all contribute to the reader’s development of an effective processing system.

• Opportunities to observe, discuss, and practice using the lesson frameworks, instructional procedures, and resources in the LLI Red, Gold, and Purple systems.

• A focus on supporting students to develop strategic actions for processing text using a gradient of high quality fiction and nonfiction texts, written explicitly for the LLI Red, Gold, and Purple systems.

• Specific instruction on the assessment and record keeping in the LLI Red, Gold, and Purple systems that is crucial to inform teaching decisions and maximize effectiveness.

• An introduction to the Online Resources website for accessing materials and the LLI Data Management Website for recording, collecting, and analyzing data on student progress.

Please expect to have lunch on your own. Questions may be directed to Kelli Campbell, Berrien RESA Director of Education, at [email protected] or (269) 471-7725 ext. 1343.

Learning Strategies that Invite Wonder and Create Success

Page 13: The compass (updated 7 13 15)

The discussions on the various gaps in student achievement continue to rank amongst the most important discussions in education today. Equally important for educators is the continued lack of student motivation, undesirable student behaviors and apathy towards achievement across racial, ethnic and socioeconomic lines. In this high-energy, interactive workshop, Principal Kafele asserts that one of the greatest difficulties to closing the various achievement gaps is the overwhelming assumption that achievement is in fact, the problem. He says that the achievement gap is a consequence of the failure to adequately address what he calls, the Attitude Gap (the gap between those students who have the will to strive for academic excellence and those who do not) that continues to persist in American classrooms.

Principal Kafele contends that unmotivated, underachieving children are actually “most brilliant and most highly capable” but their attitudes toward themselves, toward learning and toward the prospects for their futures are preventing them from striving to maximize their potential. Far too many of these children have either lost hope or have never had any hope as a result of the “hands they have been dealt” in their lives. He says that when educators therefore make the transformation of their students’ attitudes toward themselves, learning and the prospects for their futures a priority, the probability for their achievement increases exponentially!

Throughout this “no excuses” workshop, Principal Kafele will provide educators with strategies within a framework for closing the attitude gap toward the ultimate elimination of underachievement in their classrooms and schools. He will simultaneously challenge educators to look honestly within themselves toward ensuring academic success through their classroom learning environments, their attitudes toward their students, their relationships with their students, their compassion for their students and their overall relevance in instruction.

This workshop is an absolute must for any school, district or college-level teacher preparation program that is serious about the “attitude transformation” of their at-risk students.

EPINEPHRINE

If you are newly appointed or need a refresher on the use of an auto-injector, this session is for you!

Presented by Peggy Hamel, BSN, CPNP, and Karen Kortebein, BSN, RN, of the Berrien County Health Department

August 19, 2015 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. or August 20, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

at Berrien RESA Registration Deadline: August 12, 2015 (no registration fee)

Medications administration guidelines from the Michigan Department of Education require training for non-nursing staff on the use of an epinephrine auto-injector conducted under the supervision of, and shall include evaluation by a licensed, registered professional nurse. In order to receive a renewed (or new) prescription (RX) for the 2015-2016 school year from Dr. Johansen of the Berrien County Health Department, it is a requirement of at least one person per building within a district to be retrained or newly trained. With your prescription, you will have the opportunity to appy for free epi-pens. Remember, each school building with 10 or more instructional and administrative staff is required to have at least two employees trained and schools with less than 10 staff are required to have at least one trained staff member. You are certainly encouraged to have more staff trained than the required to be better equipped in the event of an anaphylactic reaction.

Instructional RoundsPresented by Ben Mainka, MASSP

August 26, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Berrien RESA(Registration begins at 8 a.m.)

5 SCECHs: $10

Instructional Rounds, as taken by the book Instructional Rounds in Education, by Elizabeth A. City, Richard F. Elmore, Sarah E. Fiarman, and Lee Teitel: “Inspired by the medical rounds model used by physicians, the authors of Instructional Rounds in Education have pioneered a new form of professional learning known as instructional rounds networks. Through this process, education leaders and practitioners develop a shared understanding of what high quality instruction looks like, and what schools and districts need to do to support it.”

A school or district takes a small group of teachers, lead by a lead teacher or administrator, to prepare and observe a class. They are not there to evaluate the teacher; instead, they are observing and noting the different aspects of teaching being practiced. The group meets before the class observation to discuss what they are looking for in that day to help them further their teaching style. Then the group goes to observe and takes notes. After the hour observation, the group meets again to discuss what they saw and learned. Just like students learn from one another, so can teachers.

If your grading system does not guide students towards excellence in learning, is it time to make some adjustments? Standards-Based Grading (SBG) is a powerful way of assessing students while focusing on learning instead of simply crunching numbers. Have you ever wondered or asked these questions about your school?

1. Do teachers assess students and arrive at a grade that is based on student-friendly learning targets that are linked to the instruction?

2. How do teachers integrate their learning of Formative Assessment, Growth Mindset, and Purposeful Instruction to their grading practices?

3. How do teachers consistently handle late work, attendance, missing work, grading scales, and other “nuts and bolts” of grading practice in their classrooms?

These questions are critical to beginning the implementation of a SBG system. This session will address these questions and many more as you begin or continue your journey into SBG practices. Participants will learn the key principles of a SBG classroom, school, or district and how their school can move the conversations around SBG forward in their schools.

Once the foundational principles are grasped, a systematic approach for where to start implementing a standards-based system will be shown. Participants will gather practical strategies, tips, tools, and ideas for implementing SBG practices. Finally, the workshop will culminate with learning teams being able to work with our trainer to create an individualized plan for implementing SBG practices in their school.

Learning to read is arguably the most important work of students and lays the foundation for future learning and understanding across all areas of the curriculum. When it comes to teaching struggling readers, it is critical that schools think in terms of student data (skills/needs), rather than instructional programs. Empirical research clearly indicates the urgent need to provide high quality, intensive instructional interventions to struggling readers. Therefore, those who work with struggling readers must have a data-based problem solving process that allows them to use assessments properly for the benefit of students.

Screening, diagnosing, and progress monitoring are essential to making sure that all students become fluent readers, but assessments alone will not do the job. Teachers must also be able to accurately and effectively analyze student data to determine needs and continuously monitor student progress.

The purpose of the Special Populations Academy is to provide those who work with struggling readers professional learning through guided and ongoing action research. Participants will be provided with professional learning around student data and how to accurately and effectively analyze data to make well-informed and timely decisions about the instructional needs of individual students.

*Please note: Participants must commit to all sessions and be a current or willing user of AIMSweb (or other General Outcome Measure for Literacy) to screen and progress monitor students throughout the entire 2015-2016 school year.
