M ina Schulz considers herself fortunate.

Though she lived for a time without health

insurance, she received coverage through the Aff ordable Care Act (ACA). Soon afterwards, she learned after a routine physical that she had a tumor in her right femur.

“The kind of cancer that I had is serious and aggressive. Once it’s progressed, there’s not much that can be done,” said Schulz. However, an MRI was able to catch the cancer early enough that she was able to get treatment and is now cancer free.

“Without that MRI, and without the Aff ordable Care Act (ACA), I don’t think

It’s a tale of two terms for Bill de Blasio.

After winning City Hall four years ago with a promise to reduce the gap between rich and poor in New York City, de Blasio cruised to re-election on Tuesday night.

De Blasio was announced the winner by local newscasts before 9:30 p.m., after early poll results showed him garnering over 61 percent of the vote with more than half of precincts reporting.

He becomes the fi rst Democratic incumbent since Mayor Ed Koch to win re-election – and he said it was just the start of a new era.

“It’s a good night for progressives,” said de Blasio in his remarks. “For the fi rst time in 32 years, a Democratic mayor was re-elected in New York City. Let’s promise each other, this is the beginning of a new era of progressive Democratic leadership in New York City for years and years to come.”

De Blasio’s main challenger, Republican Nicole Malliotakis, conceded before 10 p.m. after earning about 29 percent of votes.

Malliotakis, a State Assemblymember from Staten Island, thanked supporters for backing her against an incumbent mayor.

“I entered this race knowing that the odds were stacked against me,” said Malliotakis.

“We may not have won this race, but we have made our voices heard, and we will continue to

ArchCare, the healthcare ministry of the Archdiocese

of New York, raised a record $1.5 million for seniors and those with special needs at its annual gala.

More than 500 people attended the Nov. 3rd event at Gotham Hall, which featured a performance by award-winning writer and comedian Jim Gaffi gan.

ArchCare President and CEO Scott LaRue said that funds raised would support a variety of ArchCare programs focused on closing gaps in care. Among those were:• Expanding ArchCare’s Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), which currently allows some 700 seniors, many with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to live in their own homes or with family members.

• Providing free care, physical therapy, social work and other services for families with extraordinary needs, such as the Camacho family of conjoined twin girls from the Dominican Republic who underwent successful separation surgery earlier this year.

Here are some tips to reduce your carbon footprint, wherever you plan

to go. Whether it be reducing your consumption while on vacation, or saving greenhouse gas emissions by taking non-stop fl ights or train rides, what follows is a bit of advice to make your holidays greener.

When traveling, it is important to pay attention to the transportation

method you are using. Try avoiding using a single-occupancy vehicle and short-distance fl ying. Rather, take advantage of trains, buses, and carpools. The Sightline Institute (www.sightline.org) has prepared data showing the diff erence in emissions per travel method. For example, taking the train releases approximately one-fourth the emissions per rider compared to a single-occupancy vehicle.

If you are fl ying, do your best to avoid layovers. Reducing the amount of times you take-off and land will require less fuel resources per person, leading to a cut in your overall emissions.

Combined with your transportation option, pack light. Decreasing the

weight of your suitcase or luggage will lower the amount of fuel needed to carry the extra weight.

If you are set on driving, or are required to in order to reach your destination, there are a few tips to consider before you hit the road. Remember to perform regular vehicle maintenance to keep your car running in tip-top shape. Doing so reduces emissions and increases your fuel economy, and overall vehicle effi ciency. Regular maintenance includes simple tasks such as properly infl ating your tires, changing your air fi lter, and changing your oil. Be sure to pay attention to when you will be traveling, and aim to avoid peak travel

times. Not only is traffi c frustrating, but idling produces high levels of emissions and wastes fuel.

Once you have made it to your destination via car, non-stop fl ight, or train ride, consider fi nding a hotel with a LEED certifi cation and ask if the hotel has a recycling program and locally sourced foods and items.

T he Trump administration has decided to end Temporary

Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaraguans living in the U.S.

The TPS designation for Nicaragua was introduced in 1999 after Hurricane Mitch created widespread devastation in Central America, killing nearly 11,000 people.

It had been renewed numerous times since by the Bush and Obama administrations, allowing immigrants to continue living and working in the U.S.

However, on November 6, Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Elaine Duke announced the decision to terminate TPS for Nicaraguans, who will now have until January 5, 2019 to legalize their status or leave the U.S.

Duke said in a statement that she determined that “those substantial but temporary conditions caused in Nicaragua by Hurricane Mitch no longer exist, and thus, under the applicable statute, the current TPS designation must be terminated.”

She said the eff ective date of the termination was delayed 12 months to “allow for an orderly transition.”

The administration has delayed making a decision on the status of Hondurans until June 2018, leaving an estimated 57,000 people in

limbo.The decision by DHS was met with

sharp criticism from Latino lawmakers and immigrant advocates.

Steven Choi, Executive Director for The New York Immigration Coalition, called the decision “cruel and shameful.”

“America will not be greater or safer by sending back people who’ve made their lives here and have become part of the city’s economic and social fabric,” he said.

“This is a heartless decision that will rip families apart and infl ict harm on some of our most vulnerable neighbors. These immigrants have lived here for two decades, planting roots in their communities and contributing to local economies,” said Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez.

T alitha Anderson is still in disbelief.

She is still coming to grips with the fact that her close friend and neighbor, Zoila Feliz, was found dead in her Soundview apartment early on the morning of Wed., Nov. 1.

The 22-year-old Feliz, mother of a two-year-old son of Dominican heritage, was found by police laying in a pool of blood with her throat slit.

The incident has left neighbors at 1161 Stratford Avenue shaken, Anderson said.

“She was very bubbly, always kept us laughing,” remarked Anderson, who recalled walking home with Feliz the day before her death.

“We were talking about Halloween and trick-or-treating with the kids,” Anderson. “She was in a great mood, then that night she was dead.”

Police from the 43rd Precinct responded to a 911 call shortly before 1 a.m. on November 1.

Offi cers found Feliz unconscious with a laceration to her neck, said police. She was pronounced dead by EMS personnel who responded to the scene, police reported.

Neighbors said that Feliz’s mother,

Margarita, found her daughter’s body. The two-year-old boy was in the apartment at the time but unharmed.

“She was a very good mother, a good person,” said Juan, a resident of the building. He said he would see her several times a week, walking back from her job at a nearby Walgreen’s store.

“She was hardworking, and loved her job. She always had a smile,” he said. “It’s horrible, what happened.”

An assortment of candles, fl owers, photos and other mementos has amassed in the building courtyard in tribute to Feliz.

Anderson motioned to the collection. “Seeing these every day, I think it’s not real,”

she said. “I still can’t believe it.”Feliz’s ex-boyfriend, Darrin Rose, 22,

who is the father of her son, was arrested on November 2 in connection with the slaying. He was charged with murder, manslaughter, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Anderson said she had called 911 late in the evening of October 31 because she heard yelling coming from elsewhere the building. Though she couldn’t be sure where the sound was coming from, she said it sounded like a

domestic dispute.“Now I keep thinking, what if it was Zoila?”

Sigue lidiando con el hecho de que su cercana amiga y vecina, Zoila Feliz, fue encontrada muerta en su apartamento de Soundview la madrugada del miércoles 1º de noviembre.

Feliz, de 22 años, madre dominicana de un hijo de dos años, fue hallada por la policía en un charco de sangre con la garganta cortada.

El incidente dejó sacudidos a los vecinos del No. 1161 de la Avenida Stratford, dijo Anderson.

“Ella era muy alegre, siempre nos hacía reír”, comentó Anderson, recordando haber caminado a casa con Feliz el día antes de su muerte.

“Estábamos hablando de Halloween y de llevar a los niños a pedir dulces”, dijo. “Estaba de muy buen humor y más tarde esa noche, estaba muerta”.

La policía de la Comisaría 43 respondió a una llamada al 911 poco antes de la 1 a.m. del 1º de noviembre.

Los ofi ciales encontraron a Feliz inconsciente con una laceración en el cuello, dijo la policía. Fue declarada muerta por personal de EMS que respondió a la escena, informó.

T he early evening setting on Melrose Avenue was

intimate, with a low hum of chatter and bursts of laughter.

Guests milled about in small groups in a small gallery space dominated by stark white walls with framed paintings of vivid color and deconstructed cubic forms.

“There is a value to art,” explained Alberto Torres, the evening’s host.

He had opened his law offi ce on November 2nd to introduce visitors to the paintings and their artist, Pablo Palasso, whom he represents.

Beyond his work with Palasso, Torres has aligned himself with a host of collaborators, artists and educators to organize the “Solo Para Locos” arts festival, now in its third year. The title translates to “Only for the Crazy Ones” as a reference to the avid devotion artists often have for their craft and work, whatever the challenges. It is a fi delity easily derided as excessive, and it is why festival organizers sought the

tongue-in-cheek title to reclaim that commitment as one to exalt rather than dismiss.

“In our community we have not engaged the arts as an aspect of our own, of fully being able to express ourselves,” said Torres, for whom the festival – and art itself – is an opportunity to explore not just creativity but also important social themes.

The free two-day festival, which will off er a wide range of activities from theater plays to poetry workshops, will focus on engaging youth and will feature discussions on healthy relationships, abuse, and empowerment.

Torres regards the activities, especially those for youth, as a much-needed introduction to artistic expression.

Beyond Palasso, who is from the Dominican Republic, many other artists from across various Latin American countries will exhibit their works. He will lead also lead a painting workshop.

A self-taught artist, Palasso describes his work as conceptual art, and himself as a thematic artist. He said he draws from personal life experiences with each of his pieces, such as the

painting Ser, which translates into “Being.” The painting presents the human form as a series of sharp structures and bold strokes of color.

In his process, he seeks words fi rst as a point of departure and then immerses himself in the paintings. As he puts it, “I always need a title [for my work] because I always need a reason.”

Festival President Lourdes Batista Jakab and its Executive Director Robert Jakab said though many of the festival’s panels will be off ered in Spanish, the project is a bilingual undertaking and is open to all “art-loving people.”

Poet and educator Ana Isabel Saillant said she joined the festival in hopes of seeing a project that involved all of the Latino community in the U.S. so “no one can call [us] small, or second-class.” A poet who also is a psychiatrist, Dr. Miguel Hernández, stressed that art is a universal experience that “makes us human.”

Each year, the festival to a specifi c Latin American country; this year, organizers have chosen Mexico. Other honorees include Mexican writer and poet Octavio Paz, posthumously; Dominican writer Virtudes Alvarez;

E l anochecer en la Avenida Melrose fue íntimo, con un leve murmullo y

risas.

Los invitados se desplazaban en pequeños grupos en un pequeño espacio de galería dominado por paredes completamente blancas con pinturas enmarcadas de colores vivos y formas cúbicas deconstruidas.

“Hay un valor para el arte”, explicó Alberto Torres, el anfi trión de la noche.

Abrió su despacho de abogados para presentar a los visitantes las pinturas y su artista, Pablo Palasso, a quien representa.

Más allá de su trabajo con Palasso, Torres se ha alineado con una gran cantidad de colaboradores, artistas y educadores para organizar el festival de arte “Solo Para Locos”, ahora en su tercer año. El título hace referencia a la devoción ávida que los artistas suelen tener por su ofi cio y trabajo, independientemente

de los desafíos. Es una fi delidad fácilmente ridiculizada como excesiva, y es por eso que los organizadores del festival buscaron un título irónico que reclamara ese compromiso como propio, para exaltar en lugar de descartar.

“En nuestra comunidad no hemos involucrado a las artes como un aspecto nuestro, para poder expresarnos por completo”, dijo Torres, para quien el festival, y el arte en sí, es una oportunidad para explorar no solo la creatividad, sino también temas importantes.

El festival gratuito de dos días, que ofrecerá una amplia gama de actividades que van desde obras de teatro hasta talleres de poesía, se enfocará en atraer a los jóvenes y contará con discusiones sobre relaciones saludables, abuso y empoderamiento.

Torres considera que las actividades, especialmente las dirigidas a los jóvenes, son una introducción muy necesaria a la expresión artística.

Más allá de Palasso, quien es de la República Dominicana, muchos otros artistas de varios países latinoamericanos exhibirán sus obras. Él también dirigirá un taller de pintura.

Un artista autodidacta, Palasso describe su trabajo como arte conceptual, y a él mismo como un artista temático. Dijo que se basa en experiencias de la vida personal para cada una de sus piezas, como la pintura Ser, que presenta la forma humana como una serie de estructuras agudas y trazos audaces de color.

En su proceso, busca primero palabras como punto de partida y luego se sumerge en las

pinturas. Como él lo dice, “siempre necesito un título [para mi obra] porque siempre necesito un motivo”.

While the Trump administration shortened the open enrollment period to six weeks for most states, New York’s enrollment period lasts for three months.

The deadline for New Yorkers to enroll in coverage is January 31, 2018.

“We want all New Yorkers to know that health insurance through the Aff ordable Care Act is still available. I urge all New Yorkers who are eligible to get covered through the marketplace or renew their health insurance today,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett.

Regina Schwartz, Director of the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit, said Get Covered NYC would expand its outreach through multimedia ads, neighborhood canvassing and phone calls.

“We’re partnering with dozens of elected offi cials and community-based organizations, and we’ve got daily events through the end of open enrollment, in communities throughout the city,” she said. “We’ll be on the ground and going door to door.”

Through Get Covered NYC, city residents can get free, one-on-one guidance through the enrollment process by calling 311 or texting CoveredNYC or SeguroNYC to 877877. Assistance is available in 17

languages.Advocates said that many New Yorkers

are unaware that they’re still eligible for the ACA, as they are infl uenced by news reports about President’s Trump’s desire to abolish it.

“The ACA is still the law of the land, so sign up,” stated Dr. Herminia Palacio, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services. “The more people sign up, the more it lifts your voices and the harder it becomes for them to take it away.”

Cab driver José Felipe said he lived without health insurance for years because he was self-employed could not aff ord the premiums.

“When I got sick, I just stayed sick until I felt better,” he said.

Last year, he enrolled in insurance through the ACA and was diagnosed with a hernia that eventually needed surgery. “It helped me to have insurance, and then I wasn’t worried about going to the doctor,” Felipe said. “A lot of cab drivers don’t have insurance, but the message is to go get covered.”

Stanley Brezinoff , Interim President and Chief Executive Offi cer of NYC Health + Hospitals, called the ACA one of the greatest achievements of the twenty-fi rst century that “transformed the lives of millions of Americans,” while State Assemblymember Richard Gottfried took GOP lawmakers to task for attempting to undo President Barack Obama’s signature piece of legislation.

“As Americans we have the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and securing those rights is the responsibility of our government,” he remarked. “Unfortunately a lot of people in our government don’t get that.”

Located on East 149th Street, the Bronx Distribution Center for Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages LLC, a locally-owned bottling partner for the Coca-Cola Company, held its offi cial grand opening on October 30.

Velázquez has introduced legislation, known as the American Promise Act, which would grant TPS-eligible immigrants with legal permanent residence and create an opportunity for citizenship.

“The Trump Administration’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaraguans is misguided and deeply troubling,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat. “Many of these individuals have lived in the United States for nearly two decades, are parents to American citizens, and contribute to the American economy.”

Earlier on November 6, before the DHS decision was announced, immigrant advocates and TPS recipients rallied at Federal Plaza in Manhattan to urge the Trump administration to extend the program.

“Getting TPS allowed me to keep my job, get a driver’s license and help my family,” said Namrata, a TPS recipient from Nepal.

“If I lose TPS, I lose everything,” added Perla, a Honduran immigrant.

Advocates said that the DHS decision

puts 2,500 Nicaraguans at risk for immediate deportation.

“Ending TPS would be nothing short of a humanitarian and economic disaster,” Kavita Pawria-Sanchez, Assistant Commissioner of the Mayor’s Offi ce of Immigrant Aff airs, said at the rally.

During a media conference call on November 7, Daniella Burgi-Palomino of the Latin American Working Group noted that in 2015, 9 percent of the national income of Nicaragua was connected to money that Nicaraguan immigrants in the U.S. sent back home to their families.

“Yesterday’s decision is only the latest in the string of senseless attacks from the Trump administration on immigrants,” said Burgi-Palomino, who called for 18-month extensions for TPS recipient from El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti. “This will only drive people further into the shadows.”

Anu Joshi, Director of Immigration Policy for the New York State Immigration Fund, touted legislation such as Velázquez’s as the only viable solution.

“Not only can we not count on DHS to do the right thing, we need to have Congress come up with a permanent solution to help

TPS recipients stay in the country,” Joshi said.According to the Center for Migration

Studies, there are approximately 325,000 TPS recipients living in the United States, representing ten TPS-designated countries:

El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

A decision by DHS on the remaining countries is expected in the coming months.

I t was good night for incumbents on November 7, as nearly every

candidate up for re-election in New York City cruised to victory in the general election.

While Mayor Bill de Blasio, Public Advocate Letitia James and Comptroller Scott Stringer easily nailed down another term in the citywide races, incumbents held the same sway in local Bronx contests.

Rubén Díaz Jr. was re-elected as Bronx Borough President, receiving 88.3 percent of the vote. Republican Steven DeMartis garnered 6.6 percent, while additional challengers Antonio Vitiello and Camella Price each received 2.6 percent.

In the Bronx City Council races, Andrew Cohen won another term in District 11 with 84.6 percent of the vote.

In District 12, Andy King was re-elected with 94.2 percent of the vote.

In District 13, State Assemblymember Mark Gjonaj’s attempt to move to city government was successful, winning a City Council seat with 48.7 percent of the vote,

besting Republican John Cerini and three other challengers.

Fernando Cabrera was re-elected in District 14, defeating three challengers with 83.8 percent of votes.

Ritchie Torres, a potential choice to succeed Melissa Mark-Viverito as City Council Speaker, easily won another term in District 15, earning 94 percent of votes to defeat Republican Jayson Cancel.

Another landslide race occurred in District 16, where incumbent Vanessa Gibson garnered 96.4 percent of votes, compared to 3.6 percent for challenger Benjamin Eggleston.

In District 17, Rafael Salamanca cruised to re-election with 92.6 percent of votes.

Longtime State Senator Rubén Díaz Sr., who served in Albany since 2003, also completed the transition to the City Council, winning District 18 with 79.2 percent of the vote.

The only incumbent who encountered any diffi culty on Election Day was Queens Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley, seeking re-election in District 30. As of Wednesday morning, Republican Robert Holden held a 133-vote lead over Crowley, with the race considered too close to call.

When a student in emotional distress in a New York City

public school is black, police are much more likely to be involved, according to a new report.

The group Advocates for Children of New York says police are intervening in incidents that should be handled by clinically trained mental health professionals.

The report focuses on incidents in which students were sent to a psychiatric hospital for observation – and it found that, in one year, 95 percent of more than 2,700 interventions by police involved children

“I saw Zoila grow up,” said Guzmán, who remarked that the stress of the incident has aff ected her nerves.

“The building feels sad ― the neighbors all feel it,” said Guzmán, an 18-year resident of the building.

“I don’t want to live here anymore,” she added.

Guzmán explained that she also considers the building to be unsafe, reporting that she sees young people sitting on stairs doing drugs, while Anderson pointed out that the lock on the building’s entranceway door is broken.

“Anybody can just walk right in,” she said.Anderson said she is a domestic violence

survivor herself, and complained that the security issues in the building leave her feeling vulnerable.

“My attacker lives in the borough. I’m still afraid he could fi nd me,” she stated. “How can I feel protected?”

On November 3, a candlelight vigil was held in the building’s courtyard. Co-organized by the Offi ce of Assemblymember Marcos Crespo, the event drew a large contingent of attendees.

“There was a tremendous turnout. People came from all over the Bronx,” said Crespo. “This story has obviously touched a lot of people.”

Feliz’s aunt and cousin visited Crespo the

day after the incident, imploring his help with security issues in the building.

Crespo explained that he has been in discussions with the landlord, and that the landlord had agreed to install security cameras and repair front doors.

“He also off ered to support the family’s need, covering some of their funeral costs,” Crespo said.

Crespo said the goal of the vigil was not only to honor Feliz’s memory, but ensuring

that the family did not suff er alone. “It’s an empowering moment to see that other people are with you, that you’re not alone in your sadness,” said Crespo, who said the incident should serve as a reminder of the problem of domestic violence.

“If we want to give purpose to this tragedy, it’s to use it as an educational tool.”Feliz’s employer said it would help her family with funeral costs.

“This was a terrible event and we have extended our deepest condolences to

Zoila’s family,” said Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso. “We are also providing assistance with the family’s expenses during this diffi cult time and have made counseling resources available to our team members who worked with her.”

“Vi a Zoila crecer”, dijo, comentando que el estrés del incidente ha afectado sus nervios.

“El edifi cio se siente triste, todos los vecinos lo sienten”, dijo Guzmán, una residente de 18 años del edifi cio.

“No quiero vivir aquí más”, agregó.Guzmán explicó que ella también considera

que el edifi cio no es seguro, informa que ve a jóvenes sentados en las escaleras drogándose, mientras Anderson señaló que la cerradura de la puerta de la entrada del edifi cio está descompuesta.

“Cualquiera puede entrar”, dijo.

Anderson comentó que es una sobreviviente de violencia doméstica, y se quejó de que los problemas de seguridad en el edifi cio la hacen sentirse vulnerable.

“Mi atacante vive en el barrio. Tengo miedo de que pueda encontrarme”, afi rmó. “¿Cómo puedo sentirme protegida?”.

El 3 de noviembre se llevó a cabo una vigilia con velas en el patio del edifi cio. Coorganizado por la ofi cina del asambleísta Marcos Crespo, el evento atrajo a un gran contingente de asistentes.

“Hubo una gran participación. Vino gente de todas partes del Bronx”, dijo Crespo. “Esta historia obviamente ha conmovido a mucha gente”.

La tía y la prima de Feliz visitaron a Crespo el día después del incidente, implorando su ayuda

con los problemas de seguridad en el edifi cio.Crespo explicó que ha estado en

conversaciones con el propietario, y que este último acordó instalar cámaras de seguridad y reparar las puertas de entrada.

“También se ofreció a apoyar las necesidades de la familia, cubriendo algunos de los costos del funeral”, dijo Crespo.

Crespo también comentó que objetivo de la vigilia no fue solo honrar la memoria de Feliz, sino garantizar que la familia no sufra sola. “Es un momento de empoderamiento ver que otras personas están contigo, que no estás solo en tu tristeza”, dijo Crespo, señalando que el incidente debería servir como un recordatorio del problema de la violencia doméstica.

“Si queremos dar un propósito a esta tragedia,

es utilizarla como una herramienta educativa”.El empleador de Feliz dijo que ayudaría a su

familia con los costos del funeral.“Este fue un evento terrible y hemos extendido

nuestras más profundas condolencias a la familia de Zoila”, dijo el portavoz de Walgreens, Phil Caruso. “También estamos brindando asistencia con los gastos de la familia durante este momento difícil y hemos puesto recursos de orientación a disposición de los miembros de nuestro equipo que trabajaron con ella”.
