Comptroller’s Report
EXEMPLIFICATION UPDATE We will be able to accept candidate applications up till and at our
September 22nd meeting. Applications must be
accompanied by payment in full as follows:
CANDIDATE TAKING DEGREE ONLY $38
CANDIDATE TAKING DEGREE AND ATTENDING
DINNER $73
ALL CANDIDATE GUESTS $50 PER PERSON.
PLEASE SUPPLY INDIVIDUAL NAMES.
For anyone else wishing to attend the dinner the cost is
also $50 per person and we must have your check in hand by September 29. Seating will be closed and we
must make final payment on October 1.
Members wishing to attend the degree must be attired, at minimum, with shirt and tie and wearing a social baldric.
For those lacking a baldric they will be available for
purchase in the hotel lobby from a regalia supplier. The
degree will start promptly at 2PM and none will be admitted after the clock strikes 1400 hours!
2011 DUES for regular members will remain at only
$12. If you will not be around when the notices will be mailed in mid-November please feel free to mail your
check before you leave town. Our goal is to have all
payments received prior to January 15. If we have not received your check by then we are required to mail a
second notice which is, in my humble opinion, an
absolute waste of our monies for the printing and
postage. Please mail your check when you receive your first notice. Thanks.
ASSISTANCE WITH VETERAN’S PROGRAMS is
still needed on the FIRST SATURDAY of the month at
9:30 AM assisting members, residing at the Long Island
State Veterans‟ Home on the SUNY Stony Brook Campus, to and from their room and their council
meeting. At 1:45 PM till 3:00 PM we need assistance
running entertainment for the residents of Building 92
and others at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Sunrise Council golfers have agreed to assist in October.
We need assistance beginning in November and all
months forward, by having council members picking up the ball and running with it by volunteering just one
month as a council. We can do it with as few as 8
helpers. In August, at 1:50 PM there was one member present. 5 minutes later two more showed up. We were
saved from an embarrassing situation because less than
20 residents were able to attend. We usually have 40-50.
Please consider joining the team and pitch in. Thanks. On September 22 (our meeting day) we will be assisting
in front of building 92 at the VA „Harvest Festival‟
between the hours of 11AM and 4PM. 500-600 persons are expected. The VA is looking for volunteers to assist
at many venues. Try it, you will enjoy it!
Faithful Comptroller Sir Knight Jack O’Connor
Installation of Officers
The clock is ticking and we are running out of time to obtain tickets to the dinner following our officer
installation on Sunday September 19th. In addition,
since we have moved the dinner location seating is limited to the first 100 who send their check.
The installation will take place after the 5PM mass at St
Joseph Church in Ronkonkoma. Dinner will follow at St Regis Council (across the street) and, as we mentioned
above, limited seating is available.
The evening‟s menu will consist of family style service
including roast beef, ham, vegetables and other „fixins‟ followed by coffee and cake. The cost is only $35 per
person and that INCLUDES BEER, WINE, AND
SODA.
Get together with your group and let us know how many
seats you will require and who will be attending. Once
you have the information send your check, along with
your information, to PO Box 141 Nesconset 11767-0141. Don‟t wait until it is too late and you miss the cut!
Thanks.
Editor’s Note
Please note that this is the second issue of the
Commander‟s Log for the 2010 – 2011 “fraternal year.”

Is your council blank? Two months ago letters were sent via first class mail,
address correction requested, to the below listed reps along with a reply form,
a self-addressed postage-paid reply envelope. Those who did not reply were
removed. Grand Knights need to appoint a council rep for their councils.
These representatives need to be able to show up at all meetings.

The Pro-Life Report
The July 4th
“Face the Truth” went very well, as did the Pro-Life tables at all the various neighborhood festivals
over the summer.
Now we must get ready for the annual “Stand Up for
Life” on Rt. 110 and Jericho Turnpike on October 3rd
. Our Assembly is a sponsor for this event, so I hope you
will show your support. We will all line the road in
silent prayer holding Pro Life signs from 1 PM to 2:30 PM. Signs are provided, so all you have to do is show
up. In the past we have had from 800 to 1200 people.
Our Assembly has always had a strong presence, but
every person counts. Show your Pro Life support in this simple way. The whole family is invited. It is the right
thing to do!
Sir Knight Arthur Lange PFN
Addendum to the report
In addition to being on Rt. 110, “Stand Up for Life” will
also be on CR 111 just south of the L.I.E. on exit 70 for
those who live on the eastern side of the assembly.
Among the many places the Long Island Coalition for Life set up tables was the annual Polish Fair in
Riverhead. I have included a photo of the booth from
that venue.

The Admiral’s report
Membership is key to any organization. The motto of the Master of the First New York District, Richard
Steimle PGK, FDD, PFN, is “Every Knight a Sir
Knight.” But membership is not about getting more numbers or filling a quota; it is about getting active
people who will assist the assembly in promoting the
principle of the fourth degree, patriotism.
You, Sir Knight, are the best recruiter for the Fourth Degree just as you are the best recruiter for your own
Council. At your council meeting, in your casual
conversation with a 3rd
degree member, you can ask them if they have thought about joining the 4
th degree;
you can answer their questions about what we do.
But if you want to encourage others you need to be
encouraged yourself. The assembly‟s meetings range from as far west as Kings Park to as far east as
Cutchogue. Every member should attend at least one
meeting a year.
On Friday, September 17th, we will have a special
“indoctrination” meeting for those who have submitted
their application for the upcoming exemplification as well as those who are interested in the 4
th degree and
what out Assembly does. This will be held at Patchogue
Council at 8 PM. Come to this meeting and bring
someone who you think would make a good 4th
degree member. We are still accepting applications for the
October 10th exemplification!
Every Knight needs the opportunity to become a Sir Knight. That opportunity is you! I look forward to
seeing you at a future meeting.
Sir Knight Christopher Beattie PGK, FDD, PFN
BASEBALL!
There will be a baseball game Sunday Sept 12,
2010 1 PM at St. Joseph
Church in Kings Park in the back of the church.
Bring your glove and bat.

The Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Belllamy, a
Baptist minister and magazine
writer for The Youth‟s Companion. It was included
in an ad for the “Official
Programme for the National
Columbia Public School Celebration of October 12,
1892,” a celebration of the
400
year anniversary of Columbus‟ discovery of
America. On this day in New
York City, the pledge was first recited. The rest of the
nation participated in the ceremony on Oct. 21m where millions of schoolchildren recited the Pledge
In writing the Pledge, Bellamy was inspired by the great
speeches of Lincoln and Webster and also by the Civil War and the slogan of the French Revolution, “Liberty,
Equality and Fraternity.” The wording of the Pledge has
changed several times since its birth. Most of these changes were made so the Pledge would be specific and
more unique to the United States
1892 I pledge allegiance to my flag
and the Republic for which it stands
one nation, indivisible
with liberty and justice for all.
1892
I pledge allegiance to my flag
and to the Republic for which it stands
one nation indivisible
with liberty and justice for all.
1923 I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States
and to the Republic for which it stands
one Nation indivisible
with liberty and justice for all.
1924 I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands
one Nation indivisible
with liberty and justice for all.
1954 I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands
one Nation under God, indivisible
with liberty and justice for all.
The Pledge of Allegiance was added to the U.S. Flag
Code in 1942. The code also abolished the popular “Belamy salute” to the flag because it resembled a salute
done by the Nazis. The code specifics appropriate
behavior of the public and military during the recital of the pledge.
§172. Pledge of allegiance to the flag; manner of
delivery
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, 'I pledge allegiance
to the Flag of the United
States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and
justice for all.', should be rendered by standing at
attention facing the flag with the right hand over the
heart. When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left
shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in
uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.
With the passage of the
February 2008 Defense
Authorization Act, specifically S.1877 which
amended Title 4, U.S. Code,
veterans may now salute the U.S. Flag during the ceremony
of hoisting or lowering the
flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review. In September 2008,
Congress passed and the President signed the 2009
Defense Authorization Act which included sec. 595 and
added the playing of the National Anthem to the occasions for a military hand salute by veterans. Later
legislation is planned to add the Pledge of Allegiance.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
Religious of the Visitation Order. Apostle of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, born at
Lhautecour, France, 22 July, 1647; died at Paray-le-
Monial, 17 October, 1690.
Her parents, Claude Alacoque and Philiberte Lamyn,
were distinguished less for temporal possessions than for
their virtue, which gave them an honourable position.
From early childhood Margaret showed intense love for the Blessed Sacrament, and preferred silence and prayer
to childish amusements. After her first communion at the
age of nine, she practised in secret severe corporal mortifications, until paralysis confined her to bed for
four years. At the end of this period, having made a vow
to the Blessed Virgin to consecrate herself to religious
life, she was instantly restored to perfect health. The death of her father and the injustice of a relative plunged
the family in poverty and humiliation, after which more
than ever Margaret found consolation in the Blessed Sacrament, and Christ made her sensible of His presence
and protection. He usually appeared to her as the
Crucified or the Ecce Homo, and this did not surprise her, as she thought others had the same Divine
assistance. When Margaret was seventeen, the family
property was recovered, and her mother besought her to
establish herself in the world. Her filial tenderness made her believe that the vow of childhood was not binding,
and that she could serve God at home by penance and
charity to the poor. Then, still bleeding from her self-imposed austerities, she began to take part in the
pleasures of the world. One night upon her return from a
ball, she had a vision of Christ as He was during the scourging, reproaching her for infidelity after He had
given her so many proofs of His love. During her entire
life Margaret mourned over two faults committed at this
time--the wearing of some superfluous ornaments and a mask at the carnival to please her brothers.
On 25 May, 1671, she entered the Visitation Convent at
Paray, where she was subjected to many trials to prove her vocation, and in November, 1672, pronounced her
final vows. She had a delicate constitution, but was
gifted with intelligence and good judgement, and in the
cloister she chose for herself what was most repugnant to her nature, making her life one of inconceivable
sufferings, which were often relieved or instantly cured
by our Lord, Who acted as her Director, appeared to her frequently and conversed with her, confiding to her the
mission to establish the devotion to His Sacred Heart.
These extraordinary occurrences drew upon her the adverse criticism of the community, who treated her as a
visionary, and her superior commanded her to live the
common life. But her obedience, her humility, and
invariable charity towards those who persecuted her, finally prevailed, and her mission, accomplished in the
crucible of suffering, was recognized even by those who
had shown her the most bitter opposition.
Margaret Mary was inspired by Christ to establish the
Holy Hour and to pray lying prostrate with her face to
the ground from eleven till midnight on the eve of the first Friday of each month, to share in the mortal sadness
He endured when abandoned by His Apostles in His
Agony, and to receive holy Communion on the first
Friday of every month. In the first great revelation, He made known to her His ardent desire to be loved by men
and His design of manifesting His Heart with all Its
treasures of love and mercy, of sanctification and salvation. He appointed the Friday after the octave of the
feast of Corpus Christi as the feast of the Sacred Heart;
He called her "the Beloved Disciple of the Sacred Heart", and the heiress of all Its treasures. The love of
the Sacred Heart was the fire which consumed her, and
devotion to the Sacred Heart is the refrain of all her
writings. In her last illness she refused all alleviation, repeating frequently: "What have I in heaven and what
do I desire on earth, but Thee alone, O my God", and
died pronouncing the Holy Name of Jesus.
The discussion of the mission and virtues of Margaret
Mary continued for years. All her actions, her
revelations, her spiritual maxims, her teachings
regarding the devotion to the Sacred Heart, of which she was the chief exponent as well as the apostle, were
subjected to the most severe and minute examination,
and finally the Sacred Congregation of rites passed a favourable vote on the heroic virtues of this servant of
God. In March, 1824, Leo XII pronounced her
Venerable, and on 18 September, 1864, Pius IX declared her Blessed. When her tomb was canonically opened in
July, 1830, two instantaneous cures took place. Her body
rests under the altar in the chapel at Paray, and many
striking favours have been obtained by pilgrims attracted thither from all parts of the world. Her feast is celebrated
on 17 October. [Editor's Note: St. Margaret Mary was
canonized by Benedict XV in 1920.]
