What a year!

2

What a year! When the Sesquicentennial Committee started planning our year-long celebration, I knew it was going to be a spectacular year, but what has actually been happening during the course of the year has certainly exceeded my expectations. From the beautiful Liturgy which opened our Sesquicentennial Celebration, to the camaraderie and generosity at the 2011 Sesquicentennial Gala and Auction, the spirit that is St. Joe’s has never felt so alive to me.

It is also an exciting time for the 216 young men who will make up the class of 2015! On behalf of all in our school community, I welcome and congratulate these talented and already accomplished young men, who will comprise the SJCI Class of 2015. These young men will continue the legacy that all who have entered St. Joe’s – since 1861 – have helped to create.

As you will read in this issue of the Collegiate, these students will be joining the St. Joe’s community at a time when the school is flourishing spiritually, academically, athletically, artistically, and in the myriad of other activities our students are involved in.

The spiritual life of our school begins each day and each period of the day with the recognition of God’s presence in our lives. It continues with our school, class, and daily Liturgies, as well as with the retreat offerings for our students on every grade level. It culminates

in activities like the recently-completed Kairos Retreat, where a group of students participated in a 3-day reflection of their relationships with God. Bearing witness to their sense of spirituality are service activities done individually and as a school community, such as our annual Food Basket Drive which this year provided more than 25,000 items of food to the Warming House in Olean, New York.

Our students continue to rise to the challenge academically. Acceptance letters have already been received inviting our students to the finest local and national colleges; 56 junior students were inducted into the National Honor Society at the end of March; Seniors Jonathan A. Binns and Andrew P. McGloin were selected as National Merit Scholarship Program Finalists; Steven J. Coffed (first team) and Andrew P. McGloin, were also recently recognized by Business First as All-Western New York Academic All Stars; and our Science Olympiad team was invited to the New York State Championships at West Point Academy, where the top 55 High Schools in New York State were invited to compete for the right to represent our state at the National Championships.

Our athletic teams have been inspired by their coaches, their teammates and their classmates and … already have had an exceptional year! Our varsity football team won the Monsignor Martin League Championship at The Ralph. Junior Chad Kelly, was named 2011 Old Spice Player of the Year, one of 50 chosen nationally. Senior Austin Price became

the new Western New York record holder in the triple jump. Our wrestling team clinched the Monsignor Martin title, and the hockey team took home the New York State Catholic High School Championship with a 3-2 win over St. Anthony's of Long Island.

Some of our talented vocal musicians continue their musical ministry throughout Western New York. The Swing Choir and Varsity Singers have entertained in grammar schools, in senior centers, in several parish communities, and will soon travel to Chicago spreading both their music and their spirit. The Jazz Lab Band continues to showcase their talent not only in Western New York but at the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival in Greenwich, Connecticut. The cast, orchestra and crew of Beauty and The Beast were simply outstanding in presenting this Disney Broadway hit to a sold out Rockwell Hall – three nights in a row.

I will end my note where we at St. Joe’s always begin, with the camaraderie that exists amongst our students who refer to their relationship with one another as “Brothers,” with our faculty and staff who, together and by association, continue to respond to the mission of St. John Baptist de LaSalle, with our Board of Trustees, our parents, our alumni, our benefactors and friends – at 1238 Main Street, at 845 Kenmore Avenue, in cities like Sarasota, New York, Washington D.C., and elsewhere – Marauders and Lasallians – the living history of our school. May our God who is always with us, continue to bless you and bless those who are close to you. St. John Baptist de LaSalle ... PRAY FOR US. Live Jesus in our Hearts … FOREVER.

A Celebration 150 Years in the Making

Robert T. Scott, AFSC welcomes Chair Couple, Tom ’81 and Jean Comer (top).

Steven Coffed ’11 and Daniel Kezerashvili ’11 present Cash Cunningham with a check for $500 from the

student council to kick off the Special Appeal.Brandon Gaglio ’12 and Dr. Michael Gaglio keeps an

Lasallian 2011 -- The Sesquicentennial Gala & Auction was an over-the-top success in every possible way!

From the lively sounds of the St. Joe's Jazz Lab Band, to Oliver's fabulous cuisine, to the 150th Anniversary cake dessert, not a detail was missed by chair couple Tom '81 & Jean Comer and their 2011 Sesquicentennial Gala & Auction committee. Searchlights lit the sky creating a snow globe-like entry for the record-breaking and sold-out crowd of 572 alumni, parents and friends in attendance. Guests stepped into a Broadway-style, red-carpeted St. Joe’s foyer that was festooned with a 150th silver balloon arch and lined with student photographers waiting to commemorate their arrival. Over one hundred and twenty handsomely attired, tuxedo-clad student volunteers buzzed about as valet parkers, waiters, coat check personnel and gift assistants throughout the night. Following cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction bidding and plenty of energetic socializing, the crowd packed the beautifully transformed Hogan Gymnasium where dazzling, giant, lighted balloon bouquets hovered and sparkled overhead.

And then the evening really took off! Master of Ceremonies Kevin O’Connell and President/Principal Bob Scott each welcomed the crowd with heartfelt and moving tributes to such a historic “celebration of 150 years of Lasallian excellence.” Next up, Cash Cunningham, long-time friend of St. Joe’s and unsurpassed auctioneer extraordinaire, who, assisted by Kevin O’Connell, led the most exciting and successful Live Auction ever, raising over $80,000 for offerings that included everything from Lady Gaga tickets to a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to a pair of world renowned Australian resorts. But the excitement didn’t end there; stirred by the personal stories and presentations of seniors Steve Coffed ’11 and Dan Kezerashvili ’11, The 150 Fund special appeal for academic scholarships and financial aid blew the roof off when an anonymous alumnus’ $25,000 matching gift was not just matched, but doubled, resulting in over $85,000 in what seemed the blink of an eye! So, what did all this amazing energy add up to? A net result of $330,000 for Lasallian 2011!

Tom and Jean wish to thank everyone involved for such a historic success in this historic year: all Sesquicentennial and Gala sponsors, corporate and personal advertisers, patrons, donors and gift-in-kind providers, all student, parent, staff and faculty volunteers and the hard working members of this year’s committee.

Mark your calendar for February 4, 2012 as Jim ’87 and Lynn Panepinto will chair next year’s exciting gala event.

Late in the nineteenth century a great man was born, one whose parents for some years could not tell if he was destined for the priesthood or politics.

He turned out to be neither - priest nor politician - though many will insist that he was really a little bit of both, and perhaps when we think of the six decades of tireless service to his beloved St. Joe’s and the Christian Brothers, a little more priest than the politician.

John J. Barden was born December 15, 1895 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of Irish immigrants. He attended secondary schools in both Massachusetts and Buffalo before attending Niagara University and Canisius College, from which he received his degree in 1922. In 1956, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Canisius.

John, whose great grandson is currently a freshman at St. Joe’s, began his teaching career at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in December 1923. He would, during the span of his six-decade-long career, eventually teach eight different academic subjects and serve as coach and moderator for nearly every extra-curricular activity. When times were bad, like during the Great Depression, he turned recruiter, going door to door during the summer months, convincing parents of the value of a Christian Brothers’ education. (Tuition then was $50 a year.)

Among the organizations and activities John founded at St. Joe’s were The Pioneer Club, the Parents’ Guild, the Shamrock Club, the Silver Hoops Tournament, and

the school bowling league. Along with Msgr. Joseph E. Schieder ’27, he was Co-Chairman of the Building Fund drive for the “new St. Joe’s” (on Kenmore Ave.) in 1948.

John played an active leadership role in community life and received the Selective Service Merit Medal in 1945, the St. Patrick’s Medal in 1955, and the Valley Forge Outstanding

Classroom Teacher’s Medal in 1959, when he had been at St. Joe’s for a mere 36 years - barely half his career! He was awarded his honorary St. Joe’s diploma in 1926 and, in 1974, was made an Affiliate of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (“AFSC”), the highest honor the Christian Brothers can bestow on a lay person.

John was inducted into the school’s Signum Fidei Society in 1991, and carries the distinction of being the only non-alumnus honored by that august body. In addition, the school’s administration honored his legacy in 1984 by naming the school’s planned giving society after him. The John J. Barden Society of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute recognizes members who have made a planned gift to St. Joe’s - such as a life insurance policy with the school named as the beneficiary, or a bequest made through a will.

As we celebrate the school’s 150th anniversary, it is appropriate

that we honor the legacy John J. Barden represents by acknowledging and thanking all members of The John J. Barden Society of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute, especially the charter members listed below, as their legacy continues to build and maintain the foundation for St. Joe’s next 150 years.

from the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture next month, emphatically stated, “My involvement with the formation of the Kairos Retreat program is the aspect of my days at St. Joe’s that I am proudest of. It is gratifying to know that so many students, including my brothers Matt and Jake, would benefit from Kairos in the future. Kairos helped me find my way, and grow, through campus ministry, to the point where I sought Deacon Bill’s help in starting a program at Notre Dame.”

The philosophy and practice of serving others resonates throughout the Spitler family. “For me, "stated Kirk "the primary lesson I took away from my St. Joe’s experience—as well as watching and learning from the members of

my family—was the importance of serving and helping others. I learned that most from seeing Mr. Scott in action ... and I never had him as a teacher. After practicing law, I felt that I could serve others better by becoming a teacher and coach. I have been teaching for 11 years now, and have never looked back. I get to pass along to kids the gift I received at St. Joe’s ... an opportunity to grow.”

The Spitler family story, while it continues to unfold, features significant accomplishments in academics, spirituality, service to others and athletics.

Mark might have summed up his family’s legacy best when he stated, “Our family is extremely close and one of the most important bonds we share is our connection to St. Joe’s, which is enthusiastically shared by the women in our lives. If you talk to any other St. Joe’s family, their story will be similar. It may not span six decades, but it will illustrate the essential role St. Joe’s played in their lives.”

Six decades ... and counting. St. Joe’s has been blessed by the presence of a member of the Spitler family in each decade since the early 60’s. Rick ’64 was followed by Kevin ’67, Mark ’74, Kirk ’83, Chris ’96, Pat ’98, Andrew ’00, Chris Badura ’02, Tim ’04, Ben ’06, Andrew Badura ’07, Matt ’08, and Jake ’11. And, if the stars align, Andrew and Bridget’s child, due in July, will be a member of the Class of 2028. When Richard and Peg Spitler chose to send Rick to St. Joe’s in the fall of 1960, the Spitler family legacy began. “Our parents made a tremendous sacrifice and commitment to have us here,” stated Kevin. “My brothers and I are thankful every day for what they did for us. Anything we have accomplished reflects back on our parents. I know that they never regretted $1 of tuition they paid, nor did Mary Elaine and I when it came to our sons.” Madonna, Mark’s wife, refers to the choice of high schools this way: “For many, choosing St. Joe’s is a matter of faith. We were blessed to know Mr. Scott, the Brothers and teachers and trusted that spiritually, academically, physically – our sons would be given the tools they needed to grow, mature and learn, and become St. Joe’s men. They learned to challenge their minds and bodies and tested their wills on the soccer fields, volleyball courts and basketball courts. My St. Joe’s boys were initiated with the spirit of brotherhood and the lessons of Christ that are so vital to the compassion and integrity with which they live their lives and to their successes now and in the future.” Madonna and Mark’s son Jake echoed that sentiment when he

remarked, “St. Joe’s taught me to work hard, to focus on the important stuff first, to learn how to juggle. I would not be where I am nor who I am without St. Joe’s.” As Jake matriculates at college, knowing that he will be the last Spitler at St. Joe’s for some time, he reflects upon his days on the basketball court and the calming presence his family members provided. “Whether they were in the stands or listening to the game on the internet, I knew they were behind me 100%. And that’s the same way I feel about St. Joe’s.

Ten, fifteen, twenty years from now, I know I will be able to count on my St. Joe’s friends ... and they know they can count on me.” Rick, Kevin, Mark, and Kirk’s sister Marcia states it this way: “You create lifelong bonds with the friends you make at St. Joe’s. Heck, I still have breakfast with a group of former St. Joe’s teachers. And I never taught here. It’s just the way it works.” The fact that Marcia has likely attended more basketball games than anyone not on the coaching staff may play a part in her deep feelings for the school. While the Spitler name is equated with basketball prowess, as well as the family’s passion for one another and St. Joe’s, many may be unaware that one of the Spitlers was involved in the formation of the Kairos Retreat program. When Deacon Bill Walkowiak invited a group of students to join him for a trip to Detroit, to take a look at the Kairos program at another Christian Brothers school, Ben was quick to sign up. St. Joe's Jazz Lab Band

C ongratulations to the cast and crew of Beauty and the Beast! For three nights, at a sold-out Rockwell Hall, the guests, sat

in amazement at the outstanding performance of the cast. With three standing ovations during the show, it was clear the audience enjoyed the performance.

Everything from the singing, and acting, to the costumes and set design was spectacular. Hats off to director Paschal Frisina III '96 who directed the St. Joe’s production. Frisina, the drama instructor at St. Joe’s, is a veteran of the professional theatre community, having performed at several high-profile area venues such as Artpark, the Kavinoky Theatre and MusicalFare. The colorful cast of characters was portrayed by: Senior Alex Kosmowski as Beast, senior Marc Montana as Gaston, senior Michael Lillis as Lefou, senior Steven Coffed as Lumiere, senior Dave Croglio as Cogsworth, senior Mike Dempsey as Maurice, and junior Ethan Roaldi as D'arque. Belle was portrayed by Nardin sophomore Anna Attea.

On March 26th, the St. Joe's Jazz Lab Band participated in the Essentially Ellington Regional Jazz Festival, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts that was held at Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut. Several prestigious high school programs such as the New York City School for The Performing Arts were represented. In order to participate in the festival, bands must play an arrangement composed and performed by the American jazz composer and band leader Duke Ellington. The artistic director of the Essentially Ellington festival is jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, GRAMMY award winner in the classical and jazz divisions and also a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music. The band was adjudicated by and worked with one of the members of Wynton Marsalis' Lincoln Center Jazz Band.

While in the area, the band played for another Lasallian high school, Lasalle Academy, and participated in the "The Big Apple Jazz Tour" a personal tour of the historic spots where the greats in the jazz field played.

St. Joe’s Rocks! is our annual high school battle of the bands, open to the community, to raise both funds and awareness for a different cause every year. The student-led teams host a fun community concert and educate attendees about the great work each organization does as well as the social justice issues they face.

This year’s student organizers are Dan Courtney, Steven Coffed, Ed Pokoj, Ricky Englert, Tom Warner, Adam Roaldi, Ethan Roaldi and Joe Goergen. In celebration of St. Joe’s 150th anniversary, they wanted to keep the money in the Western New York community in support of a Lasallian cause. The students decided the proceeds would benefit Buffalo’s own Nativity Miguel School, sponsored by a number of religious societies including the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This middle school is comprised of an all-girls school (St. Monica’s) and an all-boys school (St. Augustine’s).

Since St. Joe’s Rocks! inception, more than $20,000 has been donated to a variety of organizations such as Koiyom Clinic in Southern Sudan, and Medicines for Humanity, which was rebuilding the Notre Dame de Lourdes orphanage after the earthquake in Haiti.

The concert is scheduled for Friday, May 20, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the St. Joe’s gym. If a band is interested in competing, they may contact Mr. Deveso at [email protected].

New York. Students participated in Daemen College's All High Art Exhibit held Sunday, February 27, 2011, where senior Ed Pokoj was chosen to receive a special award given by the Buffalo Society of Artists. His $100 prized was awarded by Beth Pederson, president of the society.

Also chosen for the show were juniors Chris Santone (drawing), George Clay and Chris Maloney (both photography.) The show was on display at Daemen for three weeks.

Other shows included: • Forthesecondtimethisyear, ourstudents'workwasondisplayatthe Ken-Ton Municipal Building during the month of March.

Every year, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery sponsors a program called "Teen Curators." It consists of two teens per participating school who plan, from beginning to end, a show of works by their peers. They learn about the gallery collection and what goes into creating and displaying an exhibition.

This year, juniors Ben Almeter and Casey Schultz will be representing St. Joe's. Albright-Knox puts out a call for art work from various schools and any teen is eligible to send in their work.

Several St. Joe's art students have submitted their work. The Gallery, which will come up with a theme and criteria, will choose the works for the display. Chosen works are then delivered to the gallery, and the "teen curators" will work on presentation, matting, framing, hanging the show, advertising and planning the opening of the show in May. In past years works by several St. Joe's students have been chosen for the exhibit.

The Graphics class is also participating in a number of upcoming poster contests as well as the Buffalo News Political Cartoon Contest.

A Sesquicentennial "Celebration of the Arts" saluting the St. Joe's student and alumni contributions to the field of performing and visual arts will take place Wednesday evening, May 4th at the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall on the Buffalo State College campus. Continuing our recognition of 150 years of excellence in Lasallian education, this multidimensional event will recognize current student work plus that of distinguished alumni in various artistic fields.

The evening will open with the 29th Annual Student Art Exhibit at 5pm with refreshments served from 5:30 - 6:30 pm. At 7pm, the action will flow to the performance hall where a choral and instrumental concert will showcase the Percussion Ensemble, Varsity Singers, Swing Choir and Jazz Lab Band. After a brief intermission the Concert band, the combined student choral ensembles together with the Alumni Men's Choir will come to the stage for an all-star musical finale. In addition, there will be multi-media presentations betwen sets featuring the work and profiles of professional alumni artists.

Seating is reserved and limited. For information and tickets contact Mary Roaldi in the Music Department at 874-4955. Tickets are $15.00 each. St. Joe's student may purchase a single (1) ticket for personal use for $10.00.

Wrestling, Bowling, Hockey lead Winter Season Championship Parade

highschoolnews

What could be better than winning the golf and football championships this past fall? How about a championship filled and record breaking winter season!

Wrestling - Coach Pete Kennedy '97 guided his team to their third straight Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association (MMHSAA) regular season championship and won the team All-Catholic championship for the second time since it was instituted in 2010. The wrestling team captured the All-Catholic team title with 359 points, 179 more than the second place team. The Marauders finished with six All-Catholic champions: Angel Leon, Brian Pilski, Travis Berube, Charlie Cryan, Sam Braun and Jack Cambria. Cambria became just the second wrestler in school history to win the league tournament four times. Cambria was also named the Monsignor Martin League Wrestler of the Year.

Bowling - Coach Al Simmons’ team recorded his 19th league championship and his 8th All-Catholic championship this year -- his 41st season as the varsity bowling coach. Senior Stephano Cirrito lead the team with a 211 average, while fellow seniors Anthony Garofalo (204) and Chris Logiudice (200) helped to carry the load. All three bowlers earned All-Catholic honors and then traveled to Whitestone, New York for the State bowling championship. Continuing their great run this year, Stephano Cirrito capped the season and his career by winning the NYS CHSAA State Bowling Championship. Chris Logiudice finished fourth in the tournament, while Anthony Garofalo finished seventh.

Swimming - Coach Anna Caci’s team finished second at this year’s All-Catholic meet with 15 swimmers recording personal best times. The team was led by junior Ben Verdi who medaled in the breaststroke.

Hockey - Coach Rich Crozier’s Federation hockey team continued the championship parade by winning both the MMHSAA Federation

Championship and the NYS CHSAA State Championship. In the Federation game, MVP Tyler Mills broke a scoreless tie late in the second period and Kyle Moslow scored an insurance marker shortly after, as the Marauders defeated St. Francis 2-0. Marc Mallare was stellar in the nets in preserving Coach Crozier’s first Federation title. One week later, the team took on St. Anthony’s from Long Island in the Catholic State Championship. Game MVP Aaron Iannello scored once in the first period and once in the second period to give St. Joe’s a 2-0 lead. St. Anthony’s fought back to tie the game early in the third period at 2-2 but senior Robbie Finn took the puck coast to coast to score the championship - clinching goal. Marc Mallare was again outstanding between the pipes to ensure St. Joe’s seventh state hockey championship in the last nine years.

Basketball - Coach Mark Simon recorded his 200th win at the helm of the Marauders this season while leading the team to a share of the MMHSAA regular season championship. Following playoff victories over Niagara Catholic, and Timon/St. Jude, the team advanced to the Manhattan Cup Championship where they lost a heartbreaker 57-53. The untimely loss ended a great season for the Marauders who, on Senior Night, beat Niagara Falls High School, which had been ranked number one in the state.

Indoor track Coaches Matt Hellerer '75 and Matt Dow have, for years, used the indoor season to prepare for the outdoor season. This winter season stood out on its own as senior Austin Price broke a decades old record in the triple jump when he jumped 47 feet 1 inch. Price then rewrote his own record the first weekend in March as he jumped 47 feet 3-½ inches at the Federation meet at Cornell University to finish third in the state.

inmemoriamBrother Michael Corry, FSC -- December 30, 1936 - March 15, 2011

Many SJCI alumni, parents, and staff members will hear the name Brother Michael Corry, and remember their former principal as a quiet man, but a strong leader. For many Christian Brothers who served at St. Joe’s or who were a part of the historical New York District, they will remember a true “Brothers' Brother."

During his tenure as principal at St. Joe’s – 1984-1995 – Brother Michael Corry was responsible for building a new Academic Center and an updated technology laboratory. Under his supervision, the school increased staff, broadened the curriculum and expanded the athletic department, while increasing and stabilizing the enrollment of students.

“Brother Michael will long be remembered by those of us present with him here at St. Joe’s as both a brilliant and compassionate man who cared deeply about all members of our school community," said President/Principal Robert T. Scott, AFSC. "As a leader he allowed the adult members of our school to do what we do best – nurture and educate the students entrusted to us. To our students, he asked simply ‘are

you with us?’ His tenure at St. Joe’s is remarkable in duration, but even more, in the model he established as a Christian Brother and a true son of John Baptist de La Salle. "

In an article from the May 1995 issue of The Collegiate, the late Brother Frederick Dihlmann, Vice Principal for Academic Affairs at the time, was quoted as saying, “His greatest contributions are those that cannot be seen or measured. Through his leadership and vision, his presence and professionalism, he has created and nourished a school community where the gift of the individual – be it a teacher or a Board member, a parent or student, an alumnus or affiliated member – is recognized and valued. Brother has empowered us to find purpose and fulfillment in our convictions: as Christians through our faith and as Lasallians educators through our zeal.”

While leading St. Joe’s as our principal, Brother Michael also provided his guidance as chairman of the Independent Schools Principals’ Association for the Diocese of Buffalo, as a board member of Buffalo Prep and the Diocesan Counseling Center, as a member of the District Council of the Christian Brothers, and as Chairman for several visiting committees of the Middle States Association. Following his tenure at St. Joe’s, Brother Michael served as the Brother Visitor of the New York District of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. At the time of his death, Brother Michael was still serving his fellow Brothers as the Director of the Christian Brothers Community in Lincroft, New Jersey.

St. Joe's has lost a dear friend and remembers Brother Michael Corry, FSC as a man who helped shape us, individually and collectively, as a community of faith.
