THE COLLEGE

AND INFORMATION
FIFTIETH
ANNIVERSARY
Gala
1
Today we celebrate our College’s 50th anniversary, and it is my pleasure to welcome you to tonight’s festivities. Thanks to the incredible work of dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni and administrators, the College of Communication and Information continues to grow and prosper.
Since its inception in 1969, the College has enriched the communication and information professions by fulfilling our mission to educate students, conduct cutting edge research and creative work and serve our communities. We embrace the values of intellectual pursuit, honesty and integrity, diversity and inclusion, international and intercultural awareness, and other core ideals of the University of Tennessee in the land-grant tradition as we send our graduates into the world.
This special College has had a profound impact on all of us and the Communications Building/Circle Park is “hallowed ground.” As you look through this commemorative program, you’ll see the names of many “CCI greats,” both past and present. We are an integral part of the Volunteer family and a significant part of the greatness of this 225-year-old institution.
Our outstanding alumni have done remarkable things in their professions and epitomize the VOLunteer spirit in their communities. You inspire all of us — students, faculty and staff — to strive for excellence in everything we do. The work of building a world class college is never done. Thanks to your continued help and support, CCI will continue its ascent over the next 50 years as a premiere College of Communication and Information.
Go Vols and Go CCI!

Josh Smith is the evening news anchor on WJHL-TV News Channel 11 in Johnson City. A native of the Tri-Cities, he is celebrating his 20th year with the station, having previously served for a decade as the morning news anchor.
His family roots go deep in the region, and he’s traveled through almost every part of it covering news on local TV since 1995.
Anne Holt Blackburn was one of 13 children born to a family of sharecroppers in West Tennessee. She graduated from UT in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting and worked for WKRN-News 2 in Nashville for 40 years, serving as primary news anchor from 1980 to 2017.
She has received many awards and honors, including eight Emmys, the George Foster Peabody Award for the investigative documentary Under the Influence, and the 2007 Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement—the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ highest honor. She was also the first recipient of the CCI Donald G. Hileman Distinguished Alumni Award. The first woman, the first African American, and the first news anchor to receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters, Blackburn was inducted into the first class of the Tennessee Journalism Hall of Fame in 2013.
Blackburn served on the CCI Board of Visitors (1990–2007) and the UT Board of Trustees (2007–2013). She has led News 2’s partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee and served on many charitable boards, including Book ‘em, Leadership Nashville, Cumberland Valley Girl Scouts, the Middle Tennessee March of Dimes, Inroads/Nashville, and the United Way of Middle Tennessee.

1969The BeginningThe College of Communications was founded and housed in the newly constructed Communications and University Extension Building. The Department of Advertising was also founded.
pre-1969Before the BeginningThe foundations of CCI started well before the founding of the college. Rhetoric, a cornerstone of communication studies, was among the first courses offered at Blount College, the forerunner to the University of Tennessee.
Journalism got its start in 1904 with the founding of The Orange and White school newspaper, which later became The Daily Beacon. The university began offering journalism courses in 1923, advertising courses in 1924, library science in 1928, and public relations in 1932. Departments and schools emerged as more courses were offered.
1970We’re Live in 5...4...3...2...1The Department of Broadcasting was established. That year, the college also granted its first Master of Science degree. In 1977, the college awarded its first doctoral degree.
1971-72Long-Distance LibrariansAn independent Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences began in 1971. The next year, the school offered its first distance-education courses, a tradition continuing to this day with its online MSIS degree.
1982On the AirwavesWUTK began broadcasting. First known as Album 90, the station later became the first in Knoxville to play music from such bands as U2, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Metallica.

Nannette Baker began her career as a broadcast journalist before making an about-face and entering the legal profession. Today she serves as chief magistrate judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri in St. Louis.
Baker was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to parents who were educators. Her father was on the faculty at Tuskegee Institute until she was five, when the family moved to Liberia as part of a U.S. Agency for International Development effort to establish teacher training schools. Her mother homeschooled her for the five years they were in Liberia. Baker graduated from UT’s College of Communication and Information in 1978 and spent more than a decade as a television news reporter, anchor, and talk show host in Knoxville, Memphis, and St. Louis.
In the early 1990s, Baker decided to shift careers. After graduating from the St. Louis University School of Law in 1994, she served as a judicial law clerk for Odell Horton, a federal judge in Memphis. She worked as a defense lawyer with the St. Louis firm Lashly & Baer and later moved to Schlichter Bogard & Denton, where she represented railroad workers who had suffered on-the-job injuries.
In 1999, Baker became a circuit court judge in the City of St. Louis. Five years later, she moved to the Missouri Court of Appeals, becoming the first African American woman to serve as chief judge of the Court of Appeals in 2008. She was appointed to the federal court in 2011.
Baker is a board member of many legal societies and has received numerous accolades. She has served as a member of the UT Alumni Association’s Board of Governors and the CCI Board of Visitors. She received UT Knoxville’s Alumni Professional Achievement Award in 2016.
