One Mincha, A Thousand Minchas…“In a place where there are no men, you make the effort to be a man.” (Pirkei Avos)

A commentary on the mishnah above explains it this way: If you are in a place where you see there are no good people, you make the effort to be a good person, and that will inspire others to follow in your footsteps.

A young man, a yeshiva boy in his teens, was having some trouble with his Yiddishkeit. As he entered his twenties, he took things more seriously and began improving. He settled down, married, and began raising a family. Nevertheless, he still had some weak points, and davening mincha was one of them. He found it hard to set aside the time to daven, particularly during the winter when the zman was so early.

In his field of employment, the young man was sometimes required to travel to different neighborhoods, and one day he ended up at a company in Manhattan. During the afternoon, some time before shkiah, the manager of the company, a seemingly white, all-American guy, approached him. “Did you daven mincha yet?” he asked the young man.

Huh? The young man was sure he was kidding. Surely he was just trying to show off his bits of Jewish knowledge? Sarcastically, he shot

back, “Well, have you davened yet?”

In all seriousness, the manager replied, “No, but I am going to now.”

Eyes wide with amazement, the young man watched the manager retrieve a yarmulke from his pocket, place it on his head, and begin praying with fervent concentration. He mouthed every word slowly and clearly, and it was apparent that he wasn’t just “chapping” a mincha, but really felt that it was an honor and privilege to have this one-on-one conversation with his Creator.

So inspired was our young man that he phoned his friends, all working in various places of employment, and proposed that they create a system of reminding each other to daven mincha. Today, several years later, the group is still going strong, and membership in the group is ever expanding.

And now, let’s just imagine the manager of the company arriving in heaven and being rewarded for tens of thousands of minchas davened. As to his protests that it just wasn’t possible for him to have davened so many minchas in his lifetime? The heavenly court will simply show him that one mincha that started a movement, that inspired so many others to do the same.

Tips for exercis ing in the summer

Summer is the perfect time to go outside and have fun. There are so many outdoor activities to choose from. Most activities are more enjoyable when you can do them outside, whether it’s swimming, running or cycling.

But the summer heat can be a problem if you’re not careful, particularly in areas with extreme heat and humidity.

The biggest problem is staying hydrated and maintaining your body’s electrolytes and salt. When you sweat, your body loses not only water, but electrolytes and salt, too. This delicate balance of water and electrolytes must be maintained in order to keep your body functioning properly.

If you don’t drink enough water, you may get dehydrated and suffer from light-headedness and nausea and in extreme cases, you may even require hospitalization. However, if you drink too much water without replenishing your electrolytes, you can experience hypernatremia. This can lead to confusion, nausea, muscle cramps, seizures or even death in extreme cases.

You may not be racing in the desert, but there are some things to keep in mind when it comes to exercising in the heat:

•Thetimeofdayisimportant.Avoidexercisingfrom 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s the hottest part of day. Generally, the early morning is the best time for a workout.

•Wear loose, light-colored clothes. The lightercolorswillhelpreflectheat,andcottonmaterialwill help with the evaporation of sweat.

• Sunscreen.Exercising outdoors in the sun isa great way to boost vitamin D production. However if you’re going to be out for very long -- long enough to get burned, then sunscreen is a good idea.

•Stayhydrated.Beforeyougoout,drinkaglassor two of water. Carry a bottle of water with you. Take a drink every 15 minutes, even when you’re not thirsty. When you’re done with your

workout, have a few more glasses of water, but don’t overdo it.

•Replenishyourelectrolytes.Whenyoulosealotoffluidyoumayalsogetdepletedofelectrolytes,namely sodium and potassium. So make sure to consumeextrasaltandpotassium.Avocadosandnuts are good sources of potassium. •Ifyoucan,chooseshadedtrailsorpathwaysthatkeep you out of the sun. • Check the weather forecast before you startyour workout. If there’s a heat advisory, meaning high ozone and air pollution, you might want to take your workout indoors. These pollutants can damage your lungs. • Most importantly, listen to your body. Stopimmediately if you’re feeling dizzy, faint or nauseous.

Lift edges slightly to keep juice in and then place eggplant in center of doubled silver foil.Place silver foil with eggplant inside on gas range on low-medium flame. Rotate eggplant until the skin is completely charred, about 20 minutes on each side. If the two corners of the eggplant remain hard, discard them and use only the soft center. Let the eggplant cool. Cut the eggplant in half lengthwise, drain off the liquid, and scoop the pulp into a bowl. Add garlic, mayonnaise, sugar and salt, and mix well. Using a fork, mash the eggplant to a paste.Storage: Baba Ganoush can be made and refrigerated for up to five days prior to serving.
