Going Home Celebration for St. Hugh’s Alumnae Member Florence Meikle
There was a wonderful celebration of the life of St. Hugh’s
Alumnus Florence (Flo) Meikle at the Faith Center, 4061 NE
16th Street, Lauderhill, Florida on Wednesday December 30,
2015. Flo, who passed away in December 2015 was
remembered by her lifetime friend (going back to high
school) Shelly Hewitt, brother Oliver Ruddy Meikle, and
Carmen Bartlett from Jamaica National Money Transfer,
where Flo was an employee for 9 years. The Home Going
celebration was well attended by individuals from the
Jamaican Diaspora including Mayor Barrington Russell, and
Jamaica’s former Minister of Tourism Ed Bartlett.
There were many members of St. Hugh’s Alumnae
Association of Florida in attendance, including some who
were Flo’s classmates from first form. Flo was remembered
and eulogized as a caring member of her church, workplace,
alumni association and the community at large; a fun-loving
person who brought happiness and laughter to those she came
in contact with; and through her ministry (Flo was an ordained
minister) taught others to stand firm in their faithfulness to
God.

WITH the exception of one student from St. Jago High School, Campion College snatched all of the
awards made under the Jamaica/ GraceKennedy Scholarships this year.
The Ministry of Education, which made the announcement last week, said the scholarships total $3.4
million in value, covering tuition fees, books and maintenance allowances. The awardees, who were
selected from a pool of 195 candidates, are:
Jordan Malcolm, Campion College - Jamaica Scholarship Male
Ava Robertson, Campion College - Jamaica Scholarship Female;
Dainalee Hammond, St Jago High School - Jamaica Independence Open;
Kai Bridgewater, Campion College - Jamaica Independence Male;
Tashana Blair, Campion College - Jamaica Independence Female;
Brittni Hickey, Campion College - Jamaica Adult Suffrage Open;
Mishka Williams, Campion College - Jamaica Centenary Female.
“The students were awarded based on their stellar academic performance in the recent sitting of the
Caribbean Advanced Proficiency (CAPE) examinations in June 2015,” the Ministry of Education said.
It explained further that, “Each year, the Ministry of Education invites applications from students who
have completed secondary level education and are sitting at least four CAPE subjects including
Caribbean Studies or Communication Studies with an interest in pursuing tertiary education locally.
Once the applications are received they are sent to the Caribbean Examinations Council in Barbados
for a ranking based on performance.”
