The CMMC EMERGING LEADERS COMMITTEE DR. MARI RADZIK - CHAIR What is a CMMC Emerging Leader? A person who will develop his/her leadership skills and experience in order to be more effective in representing and advocating in the mental health and other systems A person from an underserved racial, ethnic, or cultural community who is active in and committed to this community A person who has not had opportunities to represent this community at the local or statewide level on mental health policy matters Why the Need for Emerging Leaders? There continues to be inadequate representation from underserved racial, ethnic, and cultural communities at mental health policy tables Existing government and non-profit mental health agencies often do not mentor or develop leaders in the area of reducing disparities Existing mental health programs for TAY (Transition-Age Youth) do not always address racial, ethnic, or cultural issues affecting the youth EMERGING LEADERS COMMITTEE PURPOSE OF THIS COMMITTEE : Develop the process for recruiting emerging leaders Develop criteria for selecting emerging leaders Select and orient emerging leaders and mentors Provide continuous training and support of emerging leaders EMERGING LEADERS COMMITTEE EXAMPLES OF TRAININGS PROVIDED : Had a private meeting with Rusty Selix, Co-author of Proposition 63 and a leading advocate in the mental health community where they could ask him any questions they wanted. Created resources including best practices and ideas for mentors Arranged for each Emerging Leader to shadow one of the members of the CMMC EMERGING LEADERS COMMITTEE EXAMPLES OF TRAININGS PROVIDED continued : Each Emerging Leader made a special presentation at an in-person meeting of the CMMC One Emerging Leader made a video of her experience shadowing a CMMC member A special separate in-person meeting between all Emerging Leaders and their mentors was held EMERGING LEADERS COMMITTEE EXAMPLES OF TRAININGS PROVIDED continued : Emerging Leaders attended a special training on C.L.A.S. standards. CL.A.S. stands for the National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards in Health and Health Care This training was given by a staff of the Office of Minority Health under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services EMERGING LEADERS COMMITTEE EXAMPLES OF TRAININGS PROVIDED continued : Emerging Leaders were prepared to attend and provide comment at meeting of the Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (MHSOAC) Emerging Leaders were briefed on the issues regarding the Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) regulations of Proposition 63 or the Mental Health Services Act EMERGING LEADERS COMMITTEE EXAMPLES OF TRAININGS PROVIDED continued : Most recently, the Emerging Leaders were given the tools and procedures to qualitative data analysis. Several conference calls and one in-person meeting was held in order to best help the Emerging Leaders in their participation. The data was used in the development of one of the reports produced by the CMMC MHSA Assessment Committee.
