Dear Friends,

The church is not the building, the church is the people! We are Online on Facebook and YouTube for those still in isolation or unable to get to church. Recently, I have been invited to care for St Mary’s at Haynes, as this parish is without a priest for the near future. We look forward to joining with them on Zoom church on Sundays, as they are welcomed into our Benefice for the time being. As we go to press, All Saints’ Church Clifton is now OPEN for worship on Sundays 10.30am-11.15am and the second Wednesday of every month, 10am-10.30am. Even if the church can only seat approximately 30 people safely for the moment instead of its capacity for 200! You can reserve a place to come to church. Please email me/phone me and a space will be made for you. If the demand is higher than the capacity, then another service will be put in place. See the Clifton home page for more details. We have a wonderful Lay Ministry Team who take services on their own. A Reader has been trained to preach and lead services and Lay Leaders of Worship can lead and read reflections. We have a trainee priest (Ordinand) and an Assistant Curate who will be ordained a Deacon from 26th September at St Albans Abbey Cathedral. They will be leading our service of Morning Prayer on alternate weeks a beautiful reflective service with our organist playing exerts of music to help us pray and we are grateful for the bell ringing team who have started to ring us back to worship in the church building. If you would like anyone to be prayed for please let me know. We can pray for you at our services or in private in our prayer group.

Every Blessing Revd Caren

Poppy Appeal 2020

Unfortunately due to Covid-19 there will not be a door to door collection and no poppies on sale in any shops. This is because of the risk of the spread of the virus from the poppy trays. This is a decision made by the British Legion. It is such a shame but is understandable in these difficult times.

If you would like to make a donation to the British legion please contact them directly:

https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/ways-to-give/donate

Hopefully we will be able to restart our collections next year.

Take care everyone and stay safe, Denise Panton

I hope that there will be more information next month about what arrangements can be made for an act of remembrance in Clifton.

As a community we have always supported this event and the appeal from the British Legion and I hope that everyone will continue to be generous. The British Legion says:

In these unprecedented times The Royal British Legion is working hard to support the most vulnerable in our society, be it older veterans that we care for, those who suffer from social isolation, or those who are simply overwhelmed by the challenges associated with the Covid-19 pandemic. We simply cannot do it without you.

Introducing our new Assistant Curate

Dear Friends, My name is Carrie Steer and I have recently joined Rev. Caren Topley and her ministry team at All Saints Clifton and Southill. I was licensed as a lay worker on 28th August by the Bishop of Bedford and in September I will be ordained deacon and serve as an assistant curate within the benefice. I am married to Jonathan and we have two boys, Thomas, who is 12 and Jonah, who is 8. We live in the nearby village of Silsoe.

Before taking up full-time church ministry, I lived in Dorset and worked as a Health Visitor supporting families with young children. I was also involved in setting up community development projects and leading public health initiatives. My journey towards ordination began about 10 years ago with a gentle sense of God calling me into priesthood. My church ministry up to that point had involved leading contemporary worship at services and I studied Music, Worship and Theology at the London School of Theology, specialising in Singing. When my family and I moved to Bedfordshire 5 years ago I felt the time was right to begin the formal discernment process with the Church of England and I was delighted to be recommended for ordination training. I have recently completed a 2-year full time context pathway programme with the Eastern Region Ministry Course. The course included academic studies in Theology, Ministry and Mission as well as practical experience within different church traditions and hospital chaplaincy. I now look forward to continuing my training with Rev Caren for the next 3 years and it has been lovely to open the church doors once more and gather together for our worship - even if it is with face masks, hand gel and 2 metre distancing. It has been nice to meet people in person rather than on Zoom and meet others for the first time.

Every Blessing, Carrie

All Saints Clifton—Bell ringing returns!

On 2nd August, limited services resumed at All Saints Church, Clifton and to celebrate this, we were pleased to be able to ring some of the bells. Ringing takes place in a small room with limited air flow and in order to meet the current guidelines, this meant that we could only ring a few of the bells and for a limited time. After measuring the distances between the ropes we ascertained that bells 3 and 4 were over 2 m from 6,7 and 8. So, using groups from two households, we had a way forward. We are also limited to 15 minutes of ringing and each person must ring the same bells during that session. On 2nd August we rang 3,4,6 and 8 with 2 households, each of 2 people. We plan to ring for all services going forward, so if you hear the bells and think they sound different, you are quite correct. Because of the social distancing and Covid guidelines, we are not allowed to hold practices yet or teach and it may be some time before we can.

Clifton Village Neighbourhood Plan We are currently working on the Business Section of your Clifton Neighbourhood Plan and need your help. Everything in a Neighbourhood Plan must be evidence based in order to show that we are addressing the needs of the village rather than dreaming up inappropriate ideas of our own!

Part of the information we need is to establish how many businesses there are in Clifton and, whilst we can get this information from a number of different sources, it is all to easy to miss some. So if you are running any kind of business, no matter how large of small, whether it is your own or you are running a franchise, (Avon or Tupperware for example), please get in touch.

No business will be identified in our Plan – we just need to know the numbers and types. It doesn’t matter if the business is one person working part time from their back bedroom or something a bit larger. The more information we have the easier it will be to find ways of supporting everyone – particularly small start-ups.

You can get in touch via our web-site or email [email protected]

Some other sections of your Plan have reached their final draft stage and are available to view on our web-site. We are continuing to invite you to make constructive comments.

Many thanks to those who have taken the time to take a look at the draft plan and, of course, let us know what they thought! In response to comments we are adding a summary of each section to make it quicker and easier to see what we are proposing. As sections are completed they will be added until the whole plan is finalised.

You can find them all at https://www.cliftonvillageplan.com/more-info-2

Please bear in mind the parts of the Plan we are publishing now are draft versions and will most certainly be amended many times before submission. If you wish to make a suggestion, please do so via our email address https://www.cliftonvillageplan.com/ . Comments made on social media will not be considered.

For information and updates please take a look at our website - www.cliftonvillageplan.com and also our Facebook page “Clifton Village Neighbourhood Plan” - or you can call us on 07711 687456.

More next month and once again a big thank you” from your Neighbourhood Plan Team!

CLIFTON PETANQUE CLUB

Some residents are hoping to start a new club playing the traditional French game of

Boules on 2/3 lanes in the centre of the village.

This game is becoming increasingly popular and is already

played in most of the surrounding villages; it is easy to learn/play and only requires a set of 3 metal balls to join in.

The proposed annual membership will only be £15.00

with no further charges when you play. A membership of 15/20 would be ideal.

The building of the lanes will hopefully be

sourced from village project money and will add another facility to our residents’

activities.

If you are interested please call Tony Hyde on 504335

CLIFTON CARE

SCHEME TIME TO REFLECT What a community we have here in Clifton. During the worse stages of the coronavirus pandemic and as the pressure began to ease a small army of wonderful volunteers emerged. Collecting and delivering prescriptions, taking food orders and shopping, being good neighbours, befriending folk over the telephone. And just being there for those in the village who were finding life extremely difficult particularly during the lockdown. The Care Scheme would like to say a massive thank you to all those volunteers who have helped and supported the local community during these very trying times. We are planning to offer transport again from 1st October. But this will depend on drivers being willing to follow the advice about sanitising vehicles and that the activity is permitted under official requirements. Sadly we are not able to say when we can start the Wednesday afternoon "Tea & Chat" sessions again. We will be keeping this under constant review. And you may rest assured that as soon as we allowed to run these sessions we will do so as soon as practicably possible. Remember we are here to help if we can. Just call and ask ......

Changing Seasons

Autumn is early this year. I’m not ready, shivering in my summer wear, but nature is prepared.

Gardens are bright with autumn flowering Red Hot Pokers, Golden Rod, Purple Loosestrife and Devil’s Bit Scabious yielding pollen and nectar to hungry bees and hoverflies.

Evening Primroses feed night-flying moths, and if left to seed will bring close views of feeding Goldfinches all through autumn and beyond.

Autumn Hawkbit, a weed of lawn, path and road verge, resembles a dainty dandelion, and sustains the minutest of bees and flies.

Sun-ripened apples wind-blown early fall from the trees and nourish the wasps that nested underground below the raspberries.

Garden birds return from their summer sojourn in the countryside. Family groups initiate their young in mastering the techniques of extracting seeds from squirrel-proof feeders, that need to be topped up regularly again.

Summer migrants feed up ready for long flights to warmer winter quarters.

Rowan berries are ripe and ready for our blackbirds to devour well before the migrant winter thrushes arrive.

Home-grown garden harvests taste sweet, but early autumn storms disrupt the farmers’ harvest bounty. Trusting that there will be enough for all this winter.

This book is the result of a project looking at changes to the county’s wildlife habitats since the BNHS publication Wild Bedfordshire in 2000.

Site photographs are featured along with images of some of the species to be found in the key habitats. Richard Revels FRPS has revisited and photographed habitats and sites featured in the earlier work, as well as many additional sites, and a rich selection feature in this book.

The authors are Richard Revels, Graham Bellamy and Chris Boon. John Comont has contributed an introductory chapter on change in Bedfordshire in the last 20 years.

Robert Bloomfield

Robert Bloomfield was born in 1766 at Honington in Suffolk. He did not come from a wealthy background and matters were made worse by the fact that his father died when he was only a year old. Fortunately for him his mother was an educated woman, she kept the village school, and so was able to teach him to read and write.

When he was eleven he became apprentice to a farmer but he was too small and frail for the rigours of farm work, so at the age of fifteen he moved to London, apprenticed to a poor shoemaker. He wrote The Farmer's Boy in a crowded attic in Bell Alley, London, memorising it until he could write it down; it was published in 1800 and made his name. He published four collections of poetry in his easy, unchallenging style - Rural Tales in 1802, News from the Farm in 1804, Wild Flowers in 1806 and The Banks of the Wye in 1811.

It was in 1812 that things went wrong again for him. Price were rising on account of the Napoleonic Wars and two of his publishers went bankrupt, one after the other, meaning that he lost £500, a very considerable sum in those days. He thus decided to move from London, for his health and to lessen his overheads. His apparently odd choice was no move, not back to Suffolk, but to Shefford, hiring a, not insubstantial, house in Northbridge Street (see below) for £15 per annum. Probably the main reason he did not return to Suffolk was to avoid importuning relatives, his brothers, in particular, being wont to tap him for cash; he wrote of his native place: "Honington I have done with and it seems effectually to have done with me". He probably moved to Shefford because two of his friends lived there - Thomas Weston, a draper in the town and Thomas Inskip. Bloomfield's description of his house in Shefford in 1812 seems quite far removed from the middle of the town today: "…every charm of Spring surrounds us…a robin is building in the meadow behind, the nightingale is heard even to the doors, the cuckoo plies his two notes all day, and a colony of frogs their one by twilight".

He published no more books of verse after moving to Shefford though he did write the odd poem like The Man in the Moon, published after his death. His daughter Mary Anne died in 1814, aged just twenty one. In 1815 he published a rather bland little children's story called the History of Little Davy's New Hat, followed by the equally unmemorable The

History of the Chicken and the Horse and the History of the Boy and the Wasp in 1818. By this time his mental health, never very good, was waning and his physical health matching it, becoming almost blind. He also suffered by his wife's ill-considered spending. He wrote a short play, Hazelwood Hall, published shortly before his death which came at his house in Northbridge Street on 19th August 1823, aged 56. He was buried in Campton churchyard.
