MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS EARTH DAY Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues. The first Earth Day was effective at raising awareness about environmental issues and transforming public attitudes. During the 1970s, a number of important pieces of environmental legislation were passed, among them the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Another key development was the establishment in December 1970 of the Environmental Protection Agency, which was tasked with protecting human health and safeguarding the natural envi-ronment—air, water and land. On April 22, 2018 in our little Town of Clarendon there may have been people out doing their part for Earth Day. One of those people was Collin Nothnagle. He and his brother Nathan and mother Jean did their part by walking on their own street and collecting 4 bags of trash. Thank you Collin, Nathan and Jean for your service on this Earth Day.

Orleans County Historian Matt Ballard speaks to the crowd at the Clarendon

Historical Society on April 18, 2018. His “Stories that Kill” talk about some

infamous early criminals brought over 50 people in to hear him speak.

The Clarendon Historical Society will host Aaron Delehanty as our May speaker.

The meeting is May 16, 2018 at 7pm. We will have the museum open prior to the meeting from 5-7pm. Aaron Delehanty is an artist and painter. He is the staff artist at the Rochester Museum and Science Center where he builds dioramas, makes hyper realistic replications of

artifacts, paints murals and creates all kinds of convincingly realistic landforms for the museums exhibits. Before coming to Rochester he held the same position at the Field Museum in Chicago where he built a life-sized habitat diorama using Carl Akeley’s striped hyena’s taxidermy. In Spencerport, Delehanty runs a small fabrication studio and exhibition space called Loud Cow. A graduate from the Master’s program at the San Francisco Art Institute, the bachelor's program at the School of the Art Institute of Chica-go, as well as a history degree from Ohio State; he lives and works in Rochester NY.

In 1986, Bubb retired from The SUNY College of Brockport after 25 years of service providing the best possible learning environment to future educators. In the late ’60s, Bubb co-created a

simulation program that re-ceived recognition from the National College Association. Since then, Bubb has pub-lished nearly a half dozen books including his 2017 work, The Family Scrapbook, An Era in Clarendon and Holley-Murray’s History. Proceeds from Bubb’s many works bene-fit both the Madison Historical

Community Free Library Proposed 2018 Budget

When you vote on the library budget in May, you will notice that there is a significant increase. Why is there this increase? In 2017 the Community Free Library received a $20,000 grant from Senator Robert Ortt. We used this fund-ing to add a part-time Children’s Librarian position and to expand programs for Teens and Adults. Before the grant, the library offered a total of 40 children’s story hours and 12 summer reading programs. In 2017, Miss Grace, the Chil-dren’s Librarian, provided over 90 children’s events in which 1,475 children participated. These events included an after-school program, Saturday STEAM programs (science, tech-nology, engineering, arts and math), as well as starting a 1000B4K (1000 Books Before Kindergarten) initiative. Mrs. Shaw, the Library Director, was able to form a teen advisory board to suggest programs and materials to be added to the library collection. She was also able to expand adult programming to include Wacky Wednesdays, which have included sessions on Beginning Quilting, Triangular Weaving, Digital Photography, Education Law for Parents of Special Ed Students, and more. The statistics demonstrate the benefit to the com-munity for this added position. The budget you will be voting on in May will include the funding to make the part-time Chil-dren’s Librarian position permanent. The budget will also include funding to bring the staff salaries up to minimum wage. As always, the largest part of our budget is staff sala-ries. Trying to keep the budget reasonable, cuts were made in many areas. The budget on which you will be voting will be $153,713, a little over a $7.00 average increase for the year per household. We will be having a “Town Hall” style meeting at the Community Free Library on Wednesday, May 9, from 6:30-8:00 PM to discuss the budget and answer any ques-tions you may have. Movies and snacks will be available to children during this session. If you have any questions, feel free to call Sandy Shaw, Library Director, at 638-6987, or contact Amanda O’Connell, Board President, [email protected] or B a r b K e r n s , B o a r d V i c e - P r e s i d e n t [email protected]. Thank you.

TID BITS Geary (Moose) Shenck

THIS MONTH’S RIDDLES:

1. How do you measure grass? 2. What costs millions of dollars, but is worthless? 3. What would you get if you crossed a bridge with a car? 4. What do you get when you cross a tramp with a mummy? 5. What is Mickey Mouse’s favorite car?

By Grace E. Easley

Don’t worry; your life is in his hands.

He knows and he loves and he understands. So what if you stumble now and then

He always picks you up again. Don’t sigh and fret and spoil the day.

Nobody always gets his way. Think of your blessings, heaven knows Folks have a way of forgetting those.

Don’t squander years that you could fill With such tremendous worth until

One by one the chances pass Like sands in an hourglass.

Don’t worry and wish and plot and plan Remember the mighty oak began

From nothing more than one small seed And God is aware of what you need.

That’s all folks. Have a great month!

Adios and God Bless ~ Geary (Moose) Shenck

Hi, you all. I guess it’s time I get busy with whatever I’m going to write about. “That new book is selling like hotcakes”. “What’s the title of it?” “Selling Like Hotcakes.” When a man’s best friend is his dog, that dog has a problem. Love is a long sweet dream. Marriage is the alarm clock. That circle’s pretty smart. Did it go to college? Are you kidding? It has three hundred sixty degrees. It was late in last October when I was far from sober Carrying home a load of liquid pride When my feet began to stutter and I fell down in the gutter And a pig came up and laid down by my side For its always fair weather when good fellows get together And a lady passing by was heard to say, You can always tell a guy that boozes, by the company that he chooses And the pig got up and slowly walked away. Son of a gun tools skill saw: a portable cutting tool used to make boards too short. Wire wheel: cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes finger prints and hard earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes to say “OH SHUCKS”, will easily wind a tee-shirt off your back. Hammer: originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer now a days is used as a kind of diving rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. Also very effective at fingernail remover. There was a kidnapping at school, but it’s okay. He woke up.

A man may kiss a girl goodbye. A bee may kiss the butterfly. The beads of wine may kiss the glass, but as for you my friends, farewell. A small town is one where the folks know all the news before the paper comes out, but take it anyway to see whether the editor got the stories the way they heard them. Scientists say, we are what we eat. Nuts must be a commoner diet than we had thought. The reason ideas die quickly in some heads is because they can’t stand solitary confinement. Nothing gives you quite the thrill of treading in the darkness on a step that isn’t there. “How is it that you are late this morning?” the clerk was asked by his manager. “I overslept”, was the reply. “What? Do you sleep at home as well?” inquired the man-ager. Some people should use a glue stick instead of chap-stick. When I was a kid, my parents moved around a lot, but I always found them. Weasel walks into a bar. The bartender looks up and says “Wow! In all my years tending bar, I’ve never had a weasel stop by. What can I get you?” “Pop” goes the weasel.

Nurse: “Doctor, there’s a man in the waiting room who thinks he’s invisible, what should I tell him?” “Tell him I can’t see him today.” Buckle up; it makes it harder for the aliens to snatch you from your car. How do you throw away a garbage can? How did the Keep Off The Grass sign get there in the first place? Daffy definitions: Burglarize: What a robber sees with. Relief: What trees do in the spring. Car Battery: Auto abuse. Heroes: How a man moves a boat through the water. Baloney: Where your shin is lo-cated. Avoidable: What a bullfighter tries to do. Life is uncertain: Eat dessert first. One of the benefits of inflation is that the kids can no longer get sick on a nickel’s worth of candy. Every time you lend money to a friend you damage his memory. “How do you know you were going only fifteen miles an hour?” the judge asked the driver accused of speeding. He replied, “I was on my way to the dentist.” It is never wise to argue with a fool; a bystander does not know which is which. Tom went to his friend Greg’s house to have a little chit-chat. He told Greg that he knew a man with a wooden leg named Smith. Greg asked, “What’s the name of the other leg?” If all else fails, stop using all else.
