Phi Alpha’s MessageBARTH GILLAN, ALPHA PSI ‘85PHI ALPHA CXXXV

“A lifetime of happiness lies ahead of you.” These were the words of wisdom hidden in my fortune cookie on the Friday night of this year’s convention. I joked with my family and our

dinner companion, former Phi Alpha Lauck Walton, that my installation as Phi Alpha the next morning would be the first steps towards a lifetime of happiness.

But I would argue that my lifetime of happiness didn’t start at the convention, rather earlier, and one of the (many) reasons for this would be my membership in Zeta Psi. Some people may equate happiness with success, and Zeta Psi (as you will read throughout this issue) can definitely contribute to a brother’s success… if not his overall happiness.

If you are an Active you are at the beginning of your voyage, and your membership in Zeta Psi will open up numerous leadership and networking opportunities. The chance to work with – and learn from – Elder Brothers is a tremendous opportunity that should be taken advantage of.

If you are an Elder brother, remember the good times you had as a student in the Fraternity at the beginning of your journey. And remember the influence that Elders probably had on your chapter while you were an Active. Consider giving back: as a mentor, as a volunteer leader, as a donor, however you can. Make sure that this generation of brothers has the benefit of your success to help them grow. And just because you are an Elder does not mean you are excluded from the many opportunities open to Zetes that are outlined in this magazine; once a Zete, always a Zete!

It is also interesting how even when one’s journey ends, there can still be happiness. Earlier this month I, along with everyone else who knew him, was shocked by the sudden and premature passing of Blair Sheridan, a brother from the Alpha Psi Chapter. Blair was not yet 50, and had been discussing the future for his children, who he hoped would study at McGill. We consoled ourselves in this tragic loss by remembering and reliving many, many great stories that involved Blair. Laughter and happiness were present, even in that time of sadness. A final gift of happiness, supported by his family, was that – in lieu of flowers – donations in Blair’s memory to the Zeta Psi Foundation of Canada were requested so that future generations of Zetes could have the same happy experiences and successes that Blair had enjoyed due to his affiliation with Zeta Psi.

Happiness will come depending on what you make of life, so make your Zete experience a great one.

THE VISION OF BILL COMSTOCKDAVE HUNTER, IOTA ALPHA ‘80

Letter From the Executive Director

A ll of us in Zeta Psi know “The Vision of Bill Comstock.” The prestigious Comstock Trophy is named in honor of the man and the vision. In actuality, the vision known to us is really an interpretation of Brother Comstock’s words describing a fraternity wide collection of chapter and members, interacting

and enjoying brotherhood with members from all chapters. It is good and right that we do so. What I’d like to highlight is the actual vision expressed in the words.

“The Fraternity…aims now to turn out into the world self-respecting, original-thinking, self-controlled, purposeful gentlemen.”

I feel it is time for our membership to fully embrace this “vision” statement from Brother Comstock. We tend to focus on chapter outcomes and not so much individual behavior. I think it is time to turn that around and spotlight individual behavior as a means to achieve the desired outcome.

My best example of this idea comes from the pledge process. We continually have Active members expressing that pledges need to “earn” their membership through various challenges. Admittedly some challenges are fine (history of greek life and fraternity knowledge, for example), but many more are just obstacles placed in the path of success. Instead of choosing the path of self-controlled, purposeful gentlemen, some members insist on a lesser path.

Fraternities are often defined by the rare yet sensational poor behavior that gets plastered on the front page. We rarely get noticed for all the good we do. What I’d like to see is that Zeta Psi strive to totally eliminate bad behavior. We must work towards a Zeta Psi that is defined more by us stating we are good because we DON’T act poorly. That needs to start with our pledge program. Zeta Psi should brag about the fact we turn out great new members because we do it the right way by having a totally positive program. We must “turn out into the world self-respecting, original-thinking, self-controlled, purposeful gentlemen.”

The Honor Campaign has now moved into its third year of existence. It had its beginning as a campaign to end hazing but has now broadened, encompassing the philosophy of the Ideal Chapter.

The program has from the beginning encouraged chapters to produce a hazing free pledge process. Sample processes are now

offered in four, six, and eight weeks. This is now one of four pillars of the Honor Campaign: Brotherhood Development, Chapter

Development, Community Leadership & Service, and Philanthropy.

Zeta Psi is now working with all Active chapters to instill the true meaning of taking an impressionable young gentlemen and developing him into a Zete that betters both the chapter and himself.

This program will set Zeta Psi apart, but only if every Active and Elder embraces the principles and philosophies for which Zeta Psi stands. This program helps chapters track each data point and identify areas of improvement. Questions and comment can be directed to Tyler Boisvert, Director of Chapter Services at [email protected].

5 \\ WINTER 2015 The Circle of Zeta Psi

The week of August 20th to the 24th saw upwards of 300 Zetes and guests converge on the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario for the 167th Annual International Convention. It was a splendid time where both brothers from near and far were able to meet and reaffirm the bonds of brotherhood. On Wednesday night 180 guests marched upon Fort George for what many considered a highlight. Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Nehring (Mu Theta 1965) dressed in full military regalia specific to the time period of 1812 to educate all in attendance of the tragedies of the War of 1812. Brother Nehring explained how we have been in a state of peace for over 200 years, similar to our 167 year old bond between brothers within Zeta Psi. After the information session there was a musket demonstration followed by dinner at Navy Hall. Thursday’s guest program included a private wine tour and lunch at Konzelmann Estates. The evening event saw over 250 attendees walk along the Niagara Parkway to the picturesque Elements Restaurant,

situated overlooking the Niagara Horseshoe Falls. This event showcased the power and fury of Niagara Falls to many who had not been to the area before. The beautiful background was a perfect setting for a great meal. Friday provided the opportunity for guests to visit the Skylon Tower, where lunch was served with a stunning 360 degree view of Niagara Falls. Back at the Crowne Plaza, the annual Phi Alphas’ Award Luncheon took place. Friday night was a free night were Brother Colin Dempster (Tau Theta 2003) provided an excellent opportunity for our brothers to experience the nightlife of Niagara Falls, which rightfully earns the nick name “Vegas of the North”. We would like to thank Colin for all of his hard work setting up this memorable evening, with the old adage of “What happens in the Vegas

of the North, Stays in the Vegas of the North”. The annual Grand Chapter Banquet was held on Saturday evening, with over 330 guests attending, making it one of the greatest banquets in recent history for Zeta Psi. This includes a successful Zete Kids silent auction where valuable items were up for grabs. Some of these items include past issues of The Circle, The Story of Zeta Psi signed by past Phi Alphas and well as cuff links and rings emblazoned with our Escutcheon. The Grand Chapter Banquet honoured a number of brothers who have contributed immensely to our fraternity, including Andy Nunez (Iota Alpha 1994) for his tremendous work as Phi Alpha CXXXIV and Brant Davis (Alpha Epsilon 2008) and David Lazarenko (Chi Gamma 2005) for their endless support and activity as volunteers and Alumni Advisors. Close to our own hearts was the Award for Distinguished Service graciously accepted by Brother Jeff Ball (Theta Xi 1979). Overall, The 167th Annual International Zeta Psi Convention was a great success. We had many first time brothers in attendance. We had some new and unique events, including a golf tournament at Niagara’s Whirlpool Golf Course, which we hope to continue for years to come. We hope all attendees, including valued Guests and Brothers alike had an excellent experience in Niagara Falls, Ontario and we hope to see

everyone again in Las Vegas, Nevada for the 168th Annual International Zeta Psi Convention.

Doug Donaldson showing his passion for Zete4Life. His challenge for brothers to become Zete4Life members contributed

to 72 new members during Convention 2014.

2014 was a banner year for the Zete4Life program. Membership grew from less than 200 to 310 individuals. Proceeds from the program helped pay all or a portion of Convention registration fees for more than 25 brothers. And the program saw its largest number of signups in a 72 hour period thanks to a generous challenge by one man: Doug Donaldson (Theta 1972). During the LTI Luncheon at the Niagara Convention, Doug had a challege for brothers: for every individual who became a Zete4Life member by the Grand Chapter Banquet on Saturday, he would donate $1,000 to the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation. The brotherhood heeded his call, and 72 brothers became members! Brother Donaldson kept his end of the bargain, and both his contribution and the contribution of Zete4Life members have helped fund educational LTIs, scholarships, and sending Actives to Convention. Do your part to support Zeta Psi through the Zete4Life program and join today. Remember, half of all proceeds go directly to your chapter for their use, with the other half benefiting your chapter through scholarships and services!

Here are the top earning chapters this year, and what they’re doing with their 50% of their members’ Zete4Life contributions:

• Iota Alpha ($10,900) - Are doing major renovations on their chapter house.• Pi Tau ($10,900) - Are the hosts of Convention 2015, and want to use the money

to get as many Actives as possible to go to Convention.• Theta Xi ($5,000) and Alpha Psi ($5,130) - Used Zete4Life as their Elder dues

program.• Nu Delta ($2,682) - Are sending Actives to Convention.• Nu ($2,645) - Are restoring all of their composites.

Start making a difference today.

One of the functions of our fraternity is to develop the leadership, character, and intellect of our members. Some of you reading this story may be an officer or chairman in your Active or Elder Chapter, and some may not. The goal of each brother in your chapter should be to become a leader. A good leader who supports their “crew”, who looks out for the well being of others, and who assumes responsibility in all aspects of their life. The reason I am here today is because all 300 some people aboard my vessel, the HMCS Protecteur, displayed exemplary leadership regardless of what rank they held onboard.

On February 27th 2014, we were 600 nautical miles off the coast of Hawaii at the end of a two-month deployment. Suddenly the HMCS Protecteur suffered a devastating engine room fire when a large piece of electrical equipment in our engine room erupted into flames. Temperatures in the engine room rose to over 2000º Celsius (3632º Fahrenheit) causing the

ship’s glass gauges to melt, copper electrical wires to fuse to the walls and ceilings, and the engine room’s steel floor to bend and buckle. The crew was sent into the oven that night. We suffered from smoke inhalation, dehydration, and exhaustion. We fought the fire for just over eight hours; the length of a standard work day. The sailors that braved the engine room put their lives on the line to save our ship from certain destruction; the 14 million litres of diesel fuel that it carried could have created a catastrophic explosion.

These heroes were supported by a tremendous effort made by the entire ship’s company. Leadership and organization were required at all levels, from the commissioned officers to the newly enlisted, to successfully send a team into a dark, smoke filled, super-heated space to combat and defeat a raging fire. It required the crew to be briefed on their mission while they were donning their equipment; it required the careful monitoring of the

Organized CHAOSTimm Des Roches is a Maritime Surface and Sub-surface Officer with the Royal Canadian Navy. The following is an account of his experience at sea and how leadership at all levels of an organization can positively affect Navy and fraternity alike.

BY TIMM DES ROCHESMU THETA ‘08

sailors after they emerged from the fire exhausted and in need of medical attention. Gear needed to be quickly removed, air tanks swapped out to be refilled, masks to be cleaned, all while the next group prepared to enter the blaze. To make matters worse, the ship had lost all power. We were operating entirely in the dark. Without crew members in charge of refilling the air bottles to send people back into the fire; without someone directing the movement throughout the hull; without the damage control or command guidance, the ship would not have been saved.

How does this tale of heroism relate to Zeta Psi? Your chapter may not actually be on fire, although sometimes it may feel like it! (Or in the case of Beta Tau, the chapter was actually on fire) [Editor: see last year’s edition of The Circle]. Each Active and Elder Chapter needs to be led by their officers with the same conviction as the Protecteur’s managed its catastrophe. The Phi is your Captain; the buck stops with him. He is responsible for handling the interviews and the media attention after the ship pulls into Pearl Harbor after seven days at sea. The Alpha Phi is your Executive Officer. He is the second in command who deals with the resulting paperwork, the after action reviews, and procuring and lodging for some 300 sailors in a foreign port. Then there is the Gamma. He is your Logistics Officer. The one who sadly reports that lodging 300 sailors in hotels in downtown Waikiki for 3 months is out of the question.

These three officers, both naval and fraternal, are often the preeminent leaders in their respective organizations. However, the leadership required for any organization comes from the rest of its members. These are your brothers that take the ball and run with it; those who do the grunt work of organizing events, attracting sponsors, and advertising to the community. They are the sailors that will have your back when the ship’s towline snaps at 5:30 AM at the start of your (my) watch, two days into the journey back to Hawaii. It will be them who step up and give their all when you as an individual cannot give anymore.

There doesn’t have to be a fire on your ship for you to take the first steps to encourage leadership and begin to improve your chapter. Promote your junior brothers and encourage them to step up, formally or informally, and take more responsibility. Recognize that your brothers experience and witness events differently. Give praise for effort and work put into events and the organization. Showing this type of support for your crew motivates the entire group and makes individuals feel like heroes. Be honest, fair, and diligent in managing expectations, for they can be just as ferocious as a fire in the end. It sounds simple but it’s truly difficult to do. Always strive to be the best leader you can be no matter the task. It takes time but I’ve never wanted that time back.

“There doesn’t have to be a fire on your ship for you to take the first steps to encourage leadership and begin improving your chapter.”

Br. Timm Des Roches on watch.

Chapter UpdatesLast year there were 48 active chapters, of which 45

submitted full reports. This year, an unprecedented 100% of our 49 active chapters submitted a report for The Circle. This has never happened in recent memory, and the editorial staff of The Circle is very proud of this (as should be each chapter). We also received feedback last year that readers wished there was more text and less numerical data, so we have removed the data from the new reporting format and filled the space entirely with text (as was the case in past magazines). Enjoy the updated format!

Dalhousie University

The Alpha Mu chapter has been revitalized with 7 brothers living in our new chapter house, which provides with us the opportunity to host events such as parties and mixers. Additionally, the chapter has been active in local philanthropies raising over $1000 for cancer research at the annual Terry Fox Run. We are also participated in the local CIBC Run For The Cure, and local blood drives.

ΑΜVirginia Polytechnic Institute

The Alpha Pi Chapter at Virginia Tech has seen a boost in on-campus involvement and tremendous internal growth in the past months. This year we have made it a point to be active leaders in IFC at VT and have many brothers leading in their respective Academic Honor Societies in the University. We are very excited with the current direction of the chapter and have a deep desire to keep improving.

ΑΠMcGill University

Alpha Psi is in the middle of a busy semester. As the chapter wraps up rush, we are expecting a class of 15 pledges. Alpha Psi has been actively involved in philanthropy. Coming hot on the heels of the annual Terry Fox Run that benefits cancer research, the chapter is leading McGill in donations for the Right To Play spin-a-thlon for underprivileged youths. We are looking forward to another successful year.

ΑΨ

University of Illinois

Alpha Epsilon has been working hard over the past year to increase our community involvement, volunteering at local events like the Illinois Marathon and the MS Society Walk for MS. We also successfully held our annual Lincoln Day Banquet in May, when we welcome back our Elders to celebrate the life and values of our patron saint, Abraham Lincoln. We hope to have more attend this year!

University of Virginia

As the brothers of the Beta Chapter prepare for the conclusion of the Fall semester, we look back upon the successful events which have defined our involvement in the UVA community. Recently, we have achieved the 4th highest average grade point average among all fraternity chapters at UVA. Our chapter will also be supporting several families in the Charlottesville community for Christmas.

ΒTulane University

Our chapter is stronger than ever, we just held elections for next years positions and the group of guys leading this fraternity are formative. We are currently in the rush process and we finished up the semester with some brotherhood activities. We just had our alumni weekend and got to see a lot of the graduates of Beta Tau which was awesome.

ΒΤUniversity of Calgary

As a newly re-charted chapter, we are excited about holding our first “official” recruitment and initiating new brother into our circle. We are also stepping up our involvement with the campus community and hope to once again become the premier mens fraternity at the University of Calgary.

ΧΓ

The American University

In 2014, the brothers and pledges of Zeta Psi at AU focused heavily on campus climate initiatives, specifically working to fight against sexual assault. President Kyle Breckenridge was awarded the Interfraternity Council Outstanding President Award this year in appreciation of Delta Chi’s work in fostering a strong and responsible fraternal community.

ΔΧYale University

The Eta chapter has been working to enhance its reputation on campus, with our main focus on advertising for the chapter and the culture we promote. The chapter leadership has been planning improvements in our social events and philanthropic impact on the New Haven community. The house has been recently renovated and its maintenance now governed by a detailed schedule which includes all brothers of the chapter.

ΗGeorgetown University

The Gamma Epsilon chapter has grown extensively this past year. As we graduated our seniors (‘14), who were the last to have attended Georgetown alongside our founding class (‘11), we have increased our alumni outreach efforts. We are creating a Gamma Epsilon alumni database and Brother Menghi (‘16) has created a website for our chapter (zetapsigu.org).

UC Berkeley

Iota was proud to host two major events this semester. In October, we hosted our annual golf and dinner banquet, and had at the house as many as 100 Actives and Elders of all ages. Just three weeks later Iota then hosted this Fall’s West Coast LTI, our first national event since hosting Convention a few years back. We were very excited for both the events and were grateful to meet so many different Zetes from around the country.

ΙUniversity of Texas at Austin

The Iota Alpha chapter is in the midst of a phase of growth and improvement. In the past year we celebrated our 35th anniversary, increased our presence in the Greek community, and drastically improved our recruiting process. This year we are anticipating a host of much-needed house renovations, as well as a noteworthy new member class that shares our vision of expansion and accountability.

ΙΑUC Davis

This year the Iota Delta chapter has returned to UC Davis and hit the ground running. With a new chapter house and dedicated membership we are looking to expand our member base from 30 upwards to 50 or so this year. With a pledge class of 15 fine gentlemen we are on target to reach our goal.

Iota Omicron coordinated two of its most ambitious events to date this year: we hosted Theta Omicron in Oxford for the inaugural Lions’ Cup - an annual rugby tournament between our two chapters; and seven Brothers had an unforgettable experience at Convention, where they were overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness shown by all the Zetes they met. Here’s hoping we can meet more of you this year!

ΙΟTufts University

Zete’s Kappa chapter continues to grow and excel as the dominant fraternity at Tufts. In the past year we have taken strong initiatives to be a model fraternity and nurture a relationship with the school and its officials unlike any organization on our campus ever has. We also hosted our first charity event this year for BUILD, a program to help low-income students through high school to college success, raising $2000 in one night!

Κ

The Cooper Union

The Kappa Phi chapter has had a phenomenal start to the 2014-2015 school year. With assistance and inspiration from other chapters, we created an ambitious rush schedule and saw energetic participation from every Active. This lead to Zeta Psi’s largest pledge class at Cooper Union ever - Eight! We congratulate the Beta Pi pledge class on their initiation and their growth over the past few months.

ΚΦBinghamton University

Perhaps the most monumental culture shift within the Mu Pi chapter is the revamped recruitment strategy, which has yielded two of the largest pledge classes the Mu Pi chapter has seen since its inception in 2007. The increased membership has promoted diversity and solidified a campus presence that is the best the Mu Pi chapter has ever seen.

ΜΠUniversity of Alberta

The past few years has seen Mu Theta focus on the recruitment of quality young men to our brotherhood. This has paid off and has freed up the chapter to achieve our other goals which include greater involvement in the University of Alberta community, hosting more philanthropy events, and better communication with our Elders. Each year sees growth and improvement in our chapter.

The Nu Chapter has executed another successful Chipotle Relay Philanthropy event and donated all the proceeds to the Rainbow Baby Foundation for Cancer Research. In addition, the Chapter has established a Comstock Fund for itself which it plans to use to subsidize long distance comstocking trips for its brothers.

ΝMarist College

With midterms around the corner, Nu Delta can reflect on our accomplishments this year. Since the start of 2014 we have made more then 5 chapters visits and have 5 more planned for this Fall, initiated 20 new brothers of which most have already stepped into leadership roles, have hosted the two largest community service events on campus, and are proud to announce the formation of the Nu Delta Elders’ Association.

ΝΔSeton Hall University

The Nu Sigma Chapter has kicked off its year with a great start. After graduating 17 brothers, the chapter returned this academic year with 30 Active brothers. The chapter recently began its Fall 2014 New Member Education Process, offering bids to 11 gentlemen, all of which were accepted. The chapter is looking forward to a year filled with service, brotherhood and excellence as always.

In addition, we have connected and attended various events with the surrounding Greek community on numerous philanthropy and service events like the Alpha Kappa Gamma at Roosevelt University for their support in the fight against breast cancer.

ΩΑNebraska Wesleyan University

The men of the Omicron Chapter moved into a newly renovated house with all new lofts and carpet in the rooms. We are also celebrating success in many of our philanthropic events. We received the Greek Giving Week Trophy for our efforts during that week, as well as the Most Outstanding Philanthropic Event in our Relay for Life participation where we raised nearly $10,000.

ΟPrinceton University

In light of the recently instituted ban on freshman rush, OE has done exceedingly well. This term, we extended bids to 16 pledges, all of whom accepted It is the largest pledge class in recent memory. Additionally, we are cash positive for the first time in several years, thanks to the fundraising efforts of the OE Elder Association, and we are on track to stay that way. The future is bright for OE.

everyone participating in the workforce, today’s job market is more competitive than ever. While previous experience and one’s education are still critical ingredients in obtaining a position, employers are more likely to look for broader qualities when considering potential employees. These skills, sometimes called “soft skills” because they are difficult to quantify through testing or metrics, include hard to define qualities like social graces, personality, friendliness, and the ability to effectively communicate. Colleges lack the curriculum to provide these essential skills in today’s globalized, competitive job market. One traditional outlet for the fostering and development these soft skills are fraternities, and Zeta Psi is a leader in the practice. Zeta Psi has created one of the most robust leadership training and career networking programs in the fraternal world with the development of our Leadership Training Institute, regional and Chapter events, professional networking forums, and internship programs.

For over 30 years, Zeta Psi has provided seminars, known as our Leadership Training Institutes or “LTIs”, dedicated to educating our membership on the best practices of operating their chapters. Recognizing the value that they provide to our members, the Membership Education Committee is dedicated to improving these leadership seminars. To continue developing quality content and to assess its impact on members, Zeta Psi hired a full time Membership Education Director, which occurred in 2012. Since that time, 100% of our “legacy” LTI courses have been reviewed and updated, and five additional career enhancement courses have been developed to support members in their career and networking goals. These courses, grouped together as the Networking and Career Development or NCD track, now constitute over one-third of our LTI course offerings.

Br. James Hampson (Pi Sigma 2012) is one brother who has taken advantage of our LTI course offerings. In his words, “I was coming off of a summer that was high on fun, and low on anything career oriented.” That Fall he signed up to join for his first Zeta Psi LTI and attended the networking seminar where he learned just how important it is to meet people in your career field and build relationships with them. According to James, “brothers not only have the opportunity to meet other Zetes from all over the world and physically network, but the LTI staff also gives brothers the tools to become effective networkers once they leave the LTI. In fact, the first LTI I attended during my sophomore year changed my entire perspective on the importance of networking and gave me the tools to begin building my own network.”

After that weekend, James started making a serious effort to reach out to people in the Public Relations field, and kept those contacts fresh, reaching out to them regularly. Not only did this pay off

with great internship experiences the following two summers, but it also helped in recruiting new members to the chapter and making new relationships with other Greek organizations. “This just continued during my first job as a Leadership Consultant for Zeta Psi,” says James. “I have the Zeta Psi LTI program to thank for waking me up to the opportunities that networking can create for you, and getting me on the right career path.”

Not to be left out, the chapter-focused courses at LTIs have been updated with a greater emphasis on seminars and other programs related to career enhancement, in order to address the needs of our members in the changing post-graduation job market. Current Membership Education Director Joe Alessi (Phi Epsilon 2011) describes the new courses by saying, “from parsing common interviewing questions to leveraging social media platforms effectively in your job search, we’re working hard to

create and update courses that meet the needs of our undergraduates. Using technology to make our LTI content more effective and accessible is a major part of the Membership Education vision. By continuing to increase the reach of our courses, we are confident that we can help even more of our undergraduates secure quality careers as they enter the workforce. By offering career and networking tools to undergraduate brothers, a tradition of networking and inter-brother support is fostered from an early time.”

There are big plans for the future of Membership Development in Zeta Psi, beginning with the growth of our LTI Faculty program established in late 2013. Since the program’s inception, Zeta Psi has continued to build a strong and consistent network of certified LTI presenters across North America and Europe. Beginning in early 2015, the next LTI Faculty class will welcome the first European and the first non-Zete into the program. Technology will also play a major role, with the first of many eLearning courses having been successfully launched, a interactive version of our Risk Management 101 seminar. This course will guide new members through Zeta Psi’s Risk Management Policy. It will engage the students on the realities of alcohol consumption and other “risky behavior” that can occur on college campuses. Additional eLearning courses are in development, including a seminar on preventing sexual misconduct and another covering the revamped Honor Campaign. By converting information-dense courses to a self-led format, traditional LTIs will be able to focus on in-person interaction and crowd sourcing solutions. In the same vein, simulation based learning, which is already being utilized at the Kirby Leadership Conference, will begin to be built for regional LTI delivery.

Besides our educational offerings, Zeta Psi also provides social networking tools: the Zeta Psi Fraternity group on LinkedIn, the separate ZeteConnect LinkedIn group, and the ZeteConnect

Facebook group. The ZeteConnect family of networks are forums where the knowledge and experience of hundreds of Zetes in every field imaginable are available for access. The LinkedIn groups are geared specifically towards professional networking while the Facebook group is more social in nature. The LinkedIn groups boast over 3,700 (Zeta Psi Fraternity) and 1,600 (ZeteConnect) members, and the Facebook group has over 2,700 members. All are growing rapidly. This translates to a robust and effective network for Zetes, no matter what their ultimate goals may be - searching for a job, searching for advice, or just socializing.

ZeteConnect offers a variety of opportunities to meet the needs of young brothers. These social networks work together to provide our membership valuable resources to reach or surpass their networking goals. Actives and young Elders have access to Zetes within their profession who may offer them guidance crucial to successfully growing their network during the critical early years of their careers. Combining this with Zeta Psi’s robust list of courses covering resumes, cover letters, interviewing and so forth creates a potent arsenal for any young Zete seeking an entry level position. With just the click of a button, brothers can be helping brothers. Zetes have a myriad of resources they can use together to build their networks and careers.

More experienced Zetes are one of the most important assets within ZeteConnect. Those that are interested in networking to build their careers in their current field can do so, establishing contacts with other Zetes that can (and usually will) support them. It allows those who are interested in connecting with others in their same industry to do so. They may also be interested in mentoring other Zetes who are rising up through the professional ranks. This relationship not only benefits the brother receiving direct mentoring but also allows the fraternity to shape the future of these industries, an investment that will benefit future brothers years down the road. Of course, some Elders are looking to take a risk and transition to a new or different career but unwilling to do so with great risk. ZeteConnect is an added “safe space” to discuss these possibilities with fellow brothers who can help think through their transition issues and even provide a means to make it happen.

The networking groups offered by Zeta Psi provide a forum to increase your opportunities. These opportunities, however, must be actively pursued and specifically

targeted. Bruce Johnson (Theta Xi 1976), a volunteer manager of the ZeteConnect LinkedIn group, often sees an Active or young Elder ask “Does anyone know anyone with jobs available in the (x) industry? Thanks a lot!” The individual fielding the request receives few to no responses; the question is too general. According to Bruce, “you don’t ask a crowd to help you, you ask an individual person. Instead of asking for a banking job, this Zete should be figuring out how to find Zetes who are doing what he would like to be doing and going and asking them specific questions: How did you end up where you are now? What advice would you give someone in my position? What is the best way to approach your company? Would you introduce me to the right person in the HR department?” This approach is time consuming, it¹s hard, and most of all, it works. This means research, outreach, and follow-up and not just joining the groups and waiting for a knock on the door.

Not to be forgotten, Zeta Psi also offers two highly competitive internship programs in Washington Scholars and New York City Scholars. A semester in the Washington Scholars Fellowship Program can be one of the most exciting and rewarding times of your life. Washington Scholars provides interns with valuable knowledge, experience, and a broad network of professional contacts in the Washington, DC area. The program specifically targets politically minded individuals and place them in internships within government agencies, media outlets and certain non-governmental organizations throughout the United States’ capitol. Alternatively, New York City Scholars focuses on enabling talented business-minded individuals to work in the New York area and network with Alumni and Actives who live in the city. By partnering with the Zeta Psi New York City Regional

Alumni Club, the program seeks to place interns at finance, consulting, marketing, and other business focused institutions.

Brother Hampson maintains that the best Zeta Psi networking opportunity he experienced is the Washington Scholars Fellowship Program. “Washington Scholars is a highly competitive program that places interns at prestigious companies, government agencies, and think tanks throughout Washington D.C. I landed an internship with the Heritage Foundation and cannot say enough positive things about my experience there. I truly was able to take advantage of the entire Washington D.C. experience thanks to the Washington Scholars. I believe so strongly in this program that I have stayed on as the Deputy Executive Director of Washington Scholars.” He goes on to state that “you learn an incredible amount about your profession because the internship you are placed in immediately trusts you to handle a heavy load of real work. There is also a phenomenal opportunity to network in the nation’s capital. There is a networking event every night to take advantage of, and I usually did. On average, I spent 15 hours per week networking while interning at the Heritage Foundation. This seems like a daunting task, but in reality, networking is the most important part of an internship.”

At the end of 2013, a survey was conducted of recent graduates to gauge how they used the Zeta Psi services and tools offered, and their levels of success in using them. The results were astounding: recent graduates who had used two or more Zeta Psi career development and networking tools were 68% more likely to have a full time work directly related to their college major, 45% more likely to have full time job in general, and 47% less likely to be unemployed. Maurice Ducoing (Psi 2003), chair of

the Membership Development Committee, cautions brothers to be wary of thinking these statistics will automatically translate to success for every brother. “These metrics may make us think that the networking tools offered to brothers are perfect substitutes for hard work. That is simply not the case. Instead, Zetes should take full advantage of these exclusive resources, but not forget that often the tool is only as effective as he who uses it.” As the data demonstrates, one must make multiple efforts in order to achieve success.

While there is no “secret to success,” it is pretty obvious that success is greatly enhanced by networking. Br. Johnson suggests that Zetes start networking by taking a first step. He says to “reach out to someone and asking questions such as “How did you wind up with the company you are with now? What¹s the one thing you wish you knew when you were looking for your first full time job? How did your past experiences prepare you for your current position? Read their LinkedIn profile and show an interest. Most of our LinkedIn ZeteConnect members still don’t realize that they can send a message for free to any other member of the ZeteConnect group. That’s 1600 Zetes who have ‘been there and done that’ and are willing to help other Zetes. And every one of those sixteen hundred knows another one hundred....or five hundred or one thousand. It’s what I think of as our secret weapon - each other’s knowledge, experience and our own networks. It’s an incredible resource. We should be taking advantage of it more than we are now.”

Of course, the networking resources offered by Zeta Psi are not a magic bullet. They require the participation from Zetes of all ages to make an impact. For Actives, make a serious effort

attend an LTI and put into practice the networking strategies and tools you learn there. For those who already have careers, the best way to contribute to Zeta Psi is to offer your expertise and help teach Active Zetes how to effectively network and find a job before they ever leave campus. There are so many ways to give back, but your time is undoubtedly the greatest gift you can give to your brothers.

The Pi Chapter of Zeta Psi, who calls Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute its home, will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2015, a history spanning two Universities and numerous challenges. The first iteration of the Pi Chapter sprung up at Amherst College in 1858. Charles King (Epsilon 1860) and William Prentiss (Phi 1859), two Zetes who had transferred to Amherst after their initiations, helped form the first class. With the assistance of another Epsilon brother, they inducted eight of their fellow students into their fledgling group after receiving the go ahead from the Grand Chapter. Conditions at the College ended up being unfavorable to the ten young men and the chapter disbanded in 1859. No less than six years later did the “transferring the Amherst Chapter to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute” occur, according the The Story of Zeta Psi.

The second iteration of the Pi Chapter was founded on January 13, 1865 with the initiations of Satterlee Arnold (Pi 1866), Albion Christie, John Schaeffer, José Hernandez, and Guillermo Gonzalez. Like many other fraternity expansion efforts, the chapter developed from relationships RPI students had with friends and relatives at other colleges. No such familial connection we more conducive to the growth of the chapter that of Arnold’s extended family. His two cousins Livingston Satterlee (Epsilon 1858) and Francis Satterlee (Phi 1865) served as Phi Alphas X and XLIV, respectively. Elders of other chapters who lived across the river in New York’s Capital District also played roles in organizing the group and securing the approval of its Charter from the Grand Chapter. These included Elders of the Sigma, Epsilon (Brown), Chi (Colby), Theta (Union), and Rho (Harvard) Chapters. The most prominent of them was John Lamson Flagg (Rho 1857) who would soon be elected as Phi Alpha XIII and then as Mayor of his native Troy in 1866.

Like other Zete Chapters of the mid to late 19th century, Pi was nominally composed of eight to twelve brothers at any one time. The Chapter rented its first quarters at 11 Second Street in downtown Troy, near RPI’s original campus on State Street and Sixth Street. For the next three decades, the Zetes were leaders of the student government and union, of many activities, and of athletics. As Elders they established themselves in many industries and in service to Zeta Psi. In fact, there were two Phi Alphas from the Pi during this time period: Brother Saterlee Arnold, Phi Alpha XXIV and William Lyons Otis (Pi 1874), Phi Alpha XXVI. Otis was instrumental in the establishment of the Theta Xi Chapter at the University of Toronto and the Gamma Chapter at Syracuse

University. Pi brothers also assisted Zeta Psi in establishing the first fraternity at the newly-opened Cornell and hosted the Grand Chapter Convention at the Troy Masonic Hall in January 1879. The Pi also had an interesting multi-cultural aspect in that many of its members hailed from Latin America, including two of the chapter’s founders (Hernandez and Gonzalez being from Cuba). This reflected students coming to Rensselaer from there to study civil engineering and particularly the railroad industry, growing rapidly worldwide.

By the 1890s, there were eight fraternities at RPI and the college’s student body, having had decreased to only 135 students, could not support them all. The size of the campus compounded with led several fraternities, including Zeta Psi, decided to deactivate. After twenty-eight years on campus, the chapter voluntarily surrendered its Charter to the Grand Chapter on December 21, 1893 to await better days. Those days arrived a half century later in the flush of fraternity growth that followed World War II. This time it was the New York State Capital District Association of Zeta Psi (NYSCDA) under the leadership of Henry Elliot, Phi Alpha CX (Eta 1945) that provided the connections, the resources, and the dedicated effort that allowed the return of their charter in 1951. Seventeen of the 19th Century RPI Zetes, including ones from Cuba and Peru, were still living to witness the chapter’s reactivation. By this time, RPI had moved away from downtown Troy and began its

wide expansion over the city’s hills. The restored Zeta Psi joined other fraternities in the Pawling-Pinewoods area, a mile or so away from campus. There the current chapter house at 25 Belle Ave has been inhabited ever since.

The turbulent cultural winds in the ‘70s blew the Pi Chapter off course and into inactivity in 1978. Fortunately and coincidentally a group of students led by John Spohn (Pi 1981) became interested in Greek Life that year and were networked to the Pi Elders by then RPI Dean of Students Dave Thomson. The group began rushing others while still pledges and a group of 16 were initiated in 1979 in New Haven. The chapter house was renovated by the labor of Elders and Actives that summer and re-occupied in Fall 1980 with 13 brothers and four boarders. This inauspicious beginning led to a glorious future as the ‘can-do’ attitude and eschewing of the contemporary ways of new member education attracted pledges like future Phi Alpha M. Lauck Walton (Pi 1984). By the end of the decade the Chapter numbered well over fifty Active members who filled the chapter house as well as a private home and secondary chapter house of the fraternity across the street. The chapter has continued to provide leaders in Rensselaer government, athletics, publications and service as well as to the Grand Chapter of Zeta Psi. Some these brothers include two Phi Alphas, Jim Ljunglin CXXI (Pi 1957) and M. Lauck Walton CXXXIII. Art Gajarsa (Pi 1962) is Chair of the RPI Board of Trustees and Jay Webb (Pi 1962) served as President of the RPI Alumni Association. Recent leaders include Alec Vogel (Pi 2016) captain of the wrestling team and Josh Dugas (Pi 2015) current Phi and captain of the basketball team.

The Pi chapter has weathered a tumultuous history, at times producing an unprecedented number of Phi Alphas, and at others unable to keep the undergraduate chapter active. Today the chapter is as strong as ever, and is proud to have reached its 150th anniversary, which will be celebrated during the extended weekend of April 23-26 2015, capped by a Grand Banquet on Saturday evening, April 25 at the Albany Marriott Hotel. The Elder Chapter is also conducting a fund-raising campaign to present a commemorative gift to the University, which will be the restoration of an area in the campus’ Folsom Library. All Zetes are welcome to join the celebration. For more information, please visit http://www.pizetes.org/aw.

Scholarship Recipients With the help of generous and dedicated brothers, like those listed in this edition of The Circle, the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation and the Zeta Psi Foundation of Canada are able to award both merit and need-based scholarships. Dedicated Elder volunteers review the hundreds of applications each year, evaluating them based on academics, campus involvement, need, and dedication to their chapter of Zeta Psi, and the brotherhood as a whole. For Spring 2014 and Fall 2014, Zeta Psi awarded more than $50,000 of scholarships ranging from $250-$1000. If you are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree and would like to apply for a scholarship, please visit

http://zetapsi.org/foundation/scholarships/ for more information.
