The Vicar Writes
The Centenary Candle light Supper Last Sunday’s Supper was a
very happy occasion enjoyed by 30 or so of our people. During the din-
ner, we paid tribute to Ian Little on the occasion of his 94th Birthday.
The diners enjoyed the candlelight ambience and the delicious, well pre-
sented dinner prepared and organized by Gary Bartholomew. It was a
further very happy in-house celebration of our Centenary.
Clergy Conference ninety clergy participated in the Conference at
Foothills Conference Centre at Mooroolbark. Ken Morgan the Diocesan
Coordinator of Visions and Directions was the major speaker. The
Archbishop and Registrar outlined the process of renewal as we seek to
make diocesan structures more “mission-shaped”. St James’s assisted in
the provision of Eucharistic vessels and altar linen for the Conference
Eucharists. I also led the full Conference Compline on the Tuesday
night.
St James’s - an Animal Friendly Church Heather Martin, has
been successful in her application on our behalf to have St James’s rec-
ognized by the British-based Anglican Society for the Welfare of Ani-
mals as the first Animal Friendly Church in Australia. I am delighted by
this, insofar as it honours the years of work by Lorraine Hawkes and
many of our congregation at the Annual Blessing of Animals at St Fran-
cis-tide over 20 years. Heather will present the Certificate to me and our
congregation on Back to St James’ Sunday on the 21st of June. I am
delighted!
Pastoral on Friday the Funeral of James O’Dwyer who lived in Inker-
man Street near the high-rise flats was celebrated here at St James’s
with a reception afterwards in St James’s House. Yesterday the Shayan
family (from Iran) with their Australian family and friends gathered for
the baptism of baby Alexander George Shayan. It was a very joyful oc-
casion. Meanwhile, here at the Vicarage, Petra made a very successful
transition into an Australian School last Monday. She is in Grade I at
Rippon Lea Primary School.
Blessings on you as we celebrate the Pouring out of the Holy Spirit at
this great Feast of Pentecost,
Roger OGS

sion – Locked Bag Q4005 Queen Victoria Building NSW 1230.
Commissioning of a Centenary Artwork St James’ parishioner and artist, David Porter has been commissioned
by the Vicar to paint a commemorative work in honour of the life and
witness of St James the Great here in East St Kilda over the last 100
years. At present it is planned that the painting be hung in the Nave
above the Narthex arches.
The artist’s initial design depicts the priest and his acolytes and assis-
tants gathered in the Nave for the Proclamation of the Holy Gospel. It
would indeed be an appropriate symbol of our life and witness for Christ
over the past 100 years.
Objections the Wardens report that only one objection to the intended
Child Care Project here has been tendered to the Glen Eira Council.
Performance Reviews are encouraged by the Diocese for clergy and
lay employees both full -time and part-time. Some here were involved in
Fr Roger’s Ministry Appraisal process. Shortly all who are employed by
St James’s will be asked to participate in a simple Review process.
