Financial Support Needed ~
Our Syrian children - Mark, John and Meri Aldiban - continue to thrive on
the soccer field. Each has recently been accepted for the highest level of
competitive play within the Ottawa International Soccer Club. Financial
support from St Bart's parishioners has been critical, both in directly
funding the children's soccer activities to date and in leveraging support
from other organizations. Looking ahead, additional support would be
gratefully appreciated as the available funds earmarked for the children's
recreational activities are basically depleted. Parishioners who wish to offer
support can provide Ruth Honeyman or Rosemary MacDonald a cheque
made out to Church of St. Bartholomew's Refugee Fund with a notice in the
lower left corner citing Aldiban Family. For more information on the
children's soccer program and schedule please contact: Craig MacDonald
[email protected] or 613-842-0411.

The Eucharist
Celebrant: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Celebrant: We thank you, Holy God, that you sent Jesus to be born into
this world and live among us. People had turned away from you and no
longer loved each other the way you loved us. Jesus opened our eyes and
our hearts to your love and now brings us together to this table to
remember his love for us and for all people.
Therefore we join our voices with angels and archangels, and with all those
in whom the Spirit dwells, to proclaim the glory of your name.
All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the
highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the
Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Celebrant: The night before he died when Jesus was at supper with his
friends, he took bread and gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to
his friends, saying: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do
this to remember me.” When supper was ended, Jesus took a cup of wine,
thanked you, and gave it to his friends saying: “Drink this, all of you: This
is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all
for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this to remember
me.” Life-giving God, we ask you now to bless these our gifts of bread
and wine and make them holy. Fill us with the joy of the Holy Spirit as we
receive this bread and wine and then send us out in peace to share your
love with the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honour, glory, and praise, for ever and
ever. Amen.
This simplified Eucharistic prayer designed for use when young children are present has been approved by the Rt. Reverend John H. Chapman, Bishop of Ottawa,
for use in the Diocese of Ottawa.
Celebrant: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us,
we are bold to say,
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us
our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against
us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
or ever and ever. Amen.

Pentecost
God came to be within us at Pentecost. Pentecost comes from the Greek
word meaning the fiftieth day, and was the name of the Jewish feast
commemorating the giving of the Law by Moses, fifty days after the
Passover. God’s presence came as a mighty wind and was seen as tongues
of fire. Fire, a primeval element. Moses removed his sandals before the
burning bush, standing as he was in the presence of God. Fire provides
warmth and comfort; it prepares our food. But it destroys homes and
forests, with creatures fleeing into the wind that rushes towards it. We
watch it with awe, commonly helpless. For centuries, our focus at home
was on the fire. In Latin, focus is a hearth, and also an altar. The Holy Spirit
came as fires, like tongues, one for each of the disciples gathered together.
Each tongue was a blessing and a symbol of the presence of God, just as
Moses had met Him. At that moment, the disciples were turned into
apostles. It was the birth of the church. No longer a small group of
frightened Galileans, but a movement to cross all borders, we hear them
telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God said the cosmopolitan crowd
in Jerusalem (Acts 2:11). They felled the tower of Babel and brought the
Good News to Jerusalem and to all that are far off (v. 39). Both in space and
in time. On Pentecost the Holy Spirit was a great motivator, and many find
Him so today, through our consciences and our convictions. The presence
of God is also a comforter, symbolized as a dove. T.S. Eliot dwelt on
Pentecostal fire in his masterpiece Little Gidding, uniting at the poem’s end
the awesome power of God (the fire) with His sustaining presence and
mercy (the rose). It is a glimpse of how, ultimately, we may arrive where we
started, and find ourselves in the Presence of God:
When the tongues of flames are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.

The Gospel
The Holy Gospel is written in the fourteenth chapter
of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the
8th verse. (BCP)
Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP)
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to John. (BAS)
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS)
Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied."
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still
do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you
say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and
the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my
own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am
in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me
because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who
believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater
works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you
ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my
name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep
my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another
Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You
know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
(John 14:8-17)

Music during Communion
Hymn: Veni Sancte Spiritus Taizé
Hymn: 649 Breathe on Me, Breath of God Trentham
Motet: Song of the Spirit Old Dutch Carol Tune
Now sing we of the Paraclete, the Light, the Beam of God, to greet. When Christ
blessed his disciples, “Ye are my friends,” he said, “Let not your heart be troubled, and
be ye not afraid; when he the Breath of Truth is come, to all the truth he’ll bring you
home, Tho’ now ye cannot bear it.” So spoke he unto Christendom, and promised us the
Spirit.
Prayer after Communion Father, may we who have received this
eucharist live in the unity of your Holy Spirit, that we may show forth
his gifts to all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Glory to God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than
we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation,
in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 8:15 service only
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they
migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and
settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and
burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for
mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower
with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise
we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” The Lord
came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the
Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and
this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to
do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse
their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s
speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all
the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel,
because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from
there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

A Reading from the Book of Acts
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent
wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided
tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of
them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout
Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this
sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard
them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they
asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we
hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites,
and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene,
and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in
our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power."
All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this
mean? But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But
Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men
of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen
to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only
nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the
prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out
my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream
dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will
pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. ( Acts 2:1-21)
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.
