THE CHURCH IN WALES STYLE GUIDE | Logos and Typefaces

INTRODUCTION

This guide is designed to help you use the various logos of the Church in Wales, to guide you in using supporting logos and picking the correct typeface for the work.

This guide is must be used on all work produced after 1st January 2019.

It is important to remember that the logo is the most important feature in our brand identity and how we present it is very important.

When designing or laying out work visually, remember that the style of the Church in Wales is not to be over complicated and should be kept simple and readable

The colour blue is from the Pantone Matching System of colours and is PMS 300. This can be created out of4 colour process as 99% Cyan, and 50% Magenta(0% Yellow and 0% black [K]) or out of RGB as Red 0, Green 94 and Blue 184. No other colour blue should be used to represent the Church in Wales (printing on different paper and other subs-straights will have a visual impact on the PMS colour).

If you have any questions about using this guide, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The use of the Celtic Cross on its own

The Cross shown below can be used to support design; used on a cover of a book or tinted back in a background colour etc. When the Cross used in isolation it must be clear that the publication or product is from the Church in Wales. THE CROSS CANNOT BE USED INSTEAD OF THE LANDSCAPE OR PORTRAIT LOGO.

The Celtic Cross can be used more fl exibly than the full logo. Again, the Cross should not have the proportions changed or be angled but can be cropped and can be used without the restrictions of the minimum spacing specifi cations on page 10.

• The logo should be bilingual with the Welsh text appearing before the English text

• The logo should be sent to and approved by the Communications Department:[email protected]

The MINIMUM spacing specifi cations for using the logo on a page or within a set parameter:

The PMS 300 or Black logo should have a MINIMUM of 5mm clear space around the logo and the clear space should be a LEAST 3mm away from the edge of the page or outer parameter. The only exception to this would be when the parameters are very small, for example a business card and it would be impracticable to keep these measurements and therefore the distance from the logo edge should be at least 3mm.

The WHITE out logo should have the same specifi cations as above unless the colour background extends to the edge of the page or outer parameter. On the edges the colour block extends to the edge of the page or outer parameter, then the minimum coloured space will be 8mm on these edges and a minimum of 5mm between the colour background and any text or picture outside of the background block (if text is used within the same block as the logo then this only needs to be 5mm away from the logo).

Church in Wales typefaces

The Church in Wales has two ‘offi cial’ TYPEFACES, both are sans serif faces; these are Goudy Sans and Gill Sans and any fonts that are available within the typeface. The typeface choice as well as the font will dictate the number of pages in the publication.

When producing reports

Goudy Sans is generally used as a headline text and Gill Sans for body text but both are interchangeable and can be used in isolation from each other.

Ariel, is another sans serif face that is very popular and an acceptable typeface.

Where possible a minimum font size of 12 point on 15 point leading should be used for headings and text.

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the fi rst day.

And God said, ‘Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.’ So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

When producing books

The Church in Wales uses serif typefaces for producing book work for example ‘Church Service Books’ or Biographies. In these publications the choice of typeface is more part of the design and therefore more fl exibility must be allowed.

The serif examples shown here have all been used in Church in Wales publications and offer a different visual impact on the page.

(A typeface is the design of the type and font is the size and weight. Serifs are the details or decorative fl ourishes on the ends of some of the strokes and Sans serif does not have these details or fl ourishes.

When choosing a typeface it is important that accessibility is considered. The UK Association for Accessible Formats (UKAAF), www.ukaaf.org offer guidance and help. The Ariel typeface is recommended but not endorsed by UKAAF.)
