From the Historian…
Jean Luddy, who is scanning and re-filing our
memorabilia for preservation, discovered several
items of interest in the notebook 1914-1916.
This letter was typed by J. T. McKnight (clerk of
the church at that time) to the architects who drew
up the plans for the fourth church building. It was in
regards to the tin box of memorabilia to be housed
in the new cornerstone.
I included the picture of the old cornerstone from
the third building so you can see the space that
looks like a brick was taken out of it. That must
have been where this tin box was located.
Here’s the letter:
Ellington, Conn. May 15, 1915
Clark & Arms, Architects, New York
Dear Mr. Clark:-
I find the exact outside dimensions of the
old box that was taken from the corner-stone
of the old church to be 8”x 5” x 3 3/8”: with
cover on the end. The old arrangement was a
tin box with loose cover on end, and the whole
enclosed or covered with lead and sealed.
When opened the lead was cut around one
end and inside tin cover removed. If used
again the whole end would have to be
soldered all around and there would be a
slight increase to all three of the dimensions
given for extra solder and lap etc.
On the whole we should be inclined to
recommend a box made of 14 oz. rolled
copper, and of the following dimensions:- 5”x
8” inside end dimensions and 9” deep. Eight
inches is not quite deep enough to take in
folded specifications etc. Nine inches seems a
better depth. Then we can remove the old
lead cover to the old box and put the tin box
inside the new one- just filling same the 5” way
and leave an opening for new materials 5”x 5”
x 9”.
This plan would require making the opening
in the stone about 5 1/2” wide x 8 1/2” x 9 1/2”
deep.
It would not be impossible to put them in
the stone as two boxes: but we recommend
the plan as above outline.
Respectfully,
Just a side note, Mr. McKnight made a typing error
and had to xxxxx it out.
Here is a picture of our present cornerstone:

Stewardship Reminder!
Summer is around the corner. Going on vacation
soon? Don’t forget to make your gifts to the church
payable ahead. ECC’s doors don’t close and the
ministries go on, even while you’re away! Paying
ahead is easier than playing catch-up!
NOTES FROM
GROWTH AND NURTURE
REMINDER: REMINDER: Please be
sure to wear your name tag. The
name tags help make our church
more welcoming and are a small offering of
Christian hospitality. If you need a new one or
have a change of information, there is a form to
request a name tag in the Narthex or call the
Church Office. Thanks!

Service Opportunity
We are in need of a fourth person to
help maintain the kitchen cleanliness
standards. Currently there are three
faithful individuals who clean the kitchen on a
weekly basis. One more person is needed for the
fourth week of each month. The time commitment
is 1-2 hours on your assigned week. Training for the
task will be provided.
This is an equal opportunity male/female
service project. Please let Katherine Meyer
(860)490-6246 or [email protected],
Dawn Stone (860)875-8003 or
[email protected], or the church office
know if you are interested or would like more
information. This is an important need for our
certified kitchen.

Board of Missions Mail
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
The Board of
Missions will be celebrating
Mother’s Day this year by
continuing ECC’s support of
hawkwing. As you know,
hawkwing is a Native
American non-profit organization created by
Rochelle Ripley to assist the people of the Lakota
(Sioux) Cheyenne River Reservation in South
Dakota. We collect coats for the Lakota people all
year long.
On Sunday, May 3rd
, Missions will be
selling cards for Mother’s Day. For a donation of
$5, you will receive a card which will explain how
the donations will be used to help the women of the
Reservation. Rochelle will, upon receipt of the
funds, purchase selected items for women from a
clearing house she often uses. The items will then
be shipped directly to the Reservation. She will let
us know what she has bought and we will share that
information in the June Caller.
Your donations will make it possible for
hawkwing to support the Lakota people, who live a
very hard life and have very little. You can buy a
card in honor of, or in memory of, a loved one. We
hope you will participate in this project, and give
your Mom something to smile about.

Fellowship collects gently used coats
and new items for the Lakota people in

depositing clean coats in good condition, and Jan
Danforth faithfully collects and stores them each
week. (Thank you Jan D.) Our congregation has
been extremely generous in their donations and
every donation makes a difference, so thanks! For
additional information about this mission, the
website is www.hawkwing.org. You may also see

Walking the Walk on Sunday May 3rd! Taking part in Foodshare's annual Walk Against Hunger helps our church get food to hungry neighbors in our community and through-
out greater Hartford. This is the 6th time Ellington Congregational Church -- led by our youth -- has participated in The Walk in support of
Hands on Hartford over the years... and the challenge of hunger is greater than ever.
Last year, with the help of walkers like us, Hands On Hartford:
Over 30,000 meals at the MANNA Community Meals soup kitchen
Gave away over 147,000 pounds of food at the MANNA Community Pantry
Provided nearly 10,000 backpacks full of food to children in Hartford
Consider joining us on Sunday, May 3rd for this growing ECC tradition. And please, show your support by making a donation today.
When you choose Hands On Hartford as your benefiting program on the Walk registration form, a portion of the money you raise will go to FoodShare and the rest to Hands On Hartford – a benefit for us for Foodshare and most importantly to the people your contributions help serve.
Foodshare’s 32nd
Annual
WALK
AGAINST
HUNGER
In the last three years, Team ECC raised well over $1,200 for the Walk Against Hunger. Our goal is to do at least as well this year. We’re pooling our pledges, so feel free to DONATE on-line at http://site.foodshare.org/site/TR/Walk/General?team_id=11360&pg=team&fr_id=1280 or on the student pledge sheets we’ll have available after worship. Thank you so very much!!!
Together we can bring an end to hunger!

REBUILDING TOGETHER PITTSBURGH
Saturday, June 27th
to Saturday, July 4th
TELOS Presentation Sunday, July 5th
during the 9:30 Worship Service
We keep seniors safe in their homes…
Imagine the problems a senior will encounter as they attempt to age safely in their Pittsburgh home: Are the 22 stairs to their front door a challenge to climb? Does the slope on their sidewalk make it dangerous to get the mail in the winter? Does their 75 year-old bathroom make it difficult to move around safely? Is the old fuse box failing? Are the single-pane windows causing the utility bill to skyrocket?
Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh delivers no-cost home repairs to low-income seniors in Allegheny County. With 60% of the homes in our city having been built prior to 1940, and the second largest senior population in America, the need for this critical service is greater than ever.
We help neighborhoods stabilize and grow…
Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh is a go-to partner for neighborhoods committed to revitalization. Working alongside representatives from our target communities, we are able to strategically and efficiently bring private resources and home repair expertise to aid in redevelopment and preservation efforts.
Our Community Block Build model brings the full effort of Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh’s home repair program to a concentrated area – often as small a city block. Undertaken in partnership with private development and public improvement programs, the Block Build model offers a cost-effective rallying point for a neighborhood struggling to grow.
We preserve home equity for families…
The majority of the homeowners we serve live at or below the federal poverty line. Healthcare and other basic necessity costs are skyrocketing, leaving low-income citizens with less disposable income for needed home repairs and modifications. These sacrifices often leave families in unstable and unlivable home conditions, which adversely affect the value of their home to them, their families, and the community at large.
Thank you for supporting TELOS!
