PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A Message From Our President, Michael Levy

In the summer of 1988, in Victoria, I attended a work-shop at the Uni-versity called “The Book in the Mid-dle Ages”, hosted by the University’s Medieval Studies program. What a great day. I knew the organizer, so I floated the idea with him of a simi-lar event, but on a Jewish theme. He put me in touch

with another UVic professor, Lloyd Howard. Lloyd and I contacted the late Miriam Fisher, then president of Victoria’s JCC, and the three of us brainstormed over lunch at the University club.

In those days, there were precisely three signs of Jew-ish life in Victoria: Congregation Emanu-El, still in its pre-restoration stucco garb, the unassuming Jewish Community Centre building on Shelbourne Street and a street banner that was erected for a week or so in early November on Douglas Street commemorating Kristalnacht.

Lloyd, Miriam and I all felt strongly that there was a depth of Jewish history that far transcended much of the tragedy of Jewish life, and we decided that we wanted to organize an event that focused on a positive period in Jewish History. We chose medieval Spain, and came up with the title “Lost Worlds: The Golden Age of Jews in Medieval Spain”.

We approached the University of Victoria extension de-partment, and made them an offer they could not (and did not) refuse. If they would host and run the event, the JCC would underwrite it, meaning that the JCC would make good any financial losses incurred by the University.

Now the secret of success of these events is to gath-er intelligence on speakers before approaching them. Only speakers who were known for their ability to inter-est what we called “intelligent lay audiences” would be asked to participate in the program. And we succeeded brilliantly. The workshop was held on Sunday, November 22, 1998 at the University of Victoria. We followed the same format as the medieval studies workshop - that is, two speakers in the morning, and two in the afternoon, except that our event was held on a Sunday rather than a Saturday, for the obvious reason. The speakers were Professor Joan Ullman from the University of Washing-ton, Vivian Mann, then Curator of the Jewish Museum of New York, Professor Tracy Harris from Bradley Univer-sity in Peoria, Illinois and Professor Ray Scheindlin from the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York.

The event was attended by approximately one hundred and thirty people, most of them probably not Jewish. The day was a resounding success. Financially, the day ran at about a $2,000 loss, covered as promised by the JCC, but recouped by them from the fees charged for event lunch by the JCC deli.

The workshop was planned as a one-off event, but the pressure to host more “Lost Worlds” workshops was too great to resist. In all, there were five workshops. Betty and Irv Nitkin, regular visitors to Victoria, attend-ed the second workshop (in November 2000). Betty approached us and suggested that future events be co-hosted with Vancouver. Both “Lost Worlds: Yiddish Words and Music” and “Lost Worlds: Rome’s Enduring Community” were held in Victoria and repeated in Van-couver.

It has been seven years since the last “Lost Worlds” workshop, and we are seriously considering reviving the series, this time in Vancouver. In consultation with Chris Friedrichs, we have been thinking about Berlin in the years 1900-1930: definitely in the category of rich, fascinating and (possibly) a lost world. I would love to hear from you if you have any thoughts about this.Please contact our office at [email protected] or 604-257-5199 to learn more!

Thank you to all of our donors for their continued support and interest in the Nemetz Jewish Community Archives, especially to our archives sponsors who make it possible to process collections and make them available for re-search and use (see page 8 for a list of the sponsored collections and sponsorship opportunities).

Please visit MemoryBC (http://memorybc.ca/jewish-museum-and-archives-of-british-columbia-nemetz-jewish-com-munity-archives;isdiah) to view recently sponsored collections’ online finding aids and visit the JMABC’s Online Photo Library Database (http://www.jewishmuseum.ca/archives) to view recently sponsored collections’ digitized

photographs.

NEW ARCHIVAL ACQUISITIONS

Isaac Waldman Jewish Public Library - 5 audio records from Congregation Beth Israel recording the wedding of Samuel Berman and Sophie Pelman, June 13, 1943 (includes: the wedding ceremony and reception; songs sung by Cantor A. Deutsch; a conversation between the bride’s father, groom’s father and Rabbi at the wedding; conversation between the Rabbi, bride and groom; bride and groom’s speech; and 6 women (Vera Lipson, Pearl Hoffman, Sophie Rothstein, Anne Braverman, Rita ?, and ? Isman) singing a tribute at the wedding reception).

Hildy Barnett - documents (including Marjorie Groberman’s birth certificate and baby book) and 26 photographs from Marjorie Groberman.

Judy Kornfeld - Honour Roll of Contributors, United Jewish Appeal, BC, 1963.

Ariela Friedmann - 3 documents which grants permission for immigration to Israel from Romania for Ariela’s mother, Cornelia Nyra (nee Alterescu), and Cornelia’s mother and father Otilia and Jacob Alterescu.

Sonia Bellas - 4 black and white family photographs, ca. 1950-1963.

Congregation Beth Israel - 37 boxes of Congregation Beth Israel material and 7 boxes of material from the Women’s League of Beth Israel; dates ca. 1930s-2000s. On August 2, 1932, Congregation Beth Israel was formed as a Conser-vative Synagogue. Today, Beth Israel has embarked on its new building and site redevelopment and as such, it was a perfect opportunity to discuss their archives with them. Congregation Beth Israel decided to emphasize the impor-tance of their history and their archival documents and photographs by donating them to the JHSBC. With the archival donation and its sponsorship, the material will be safely stored in an environmentally controlled storage repository, and processed using the strictest archival standards making it available both to Beth Israel and researchers. This collection is a wonderful addition to the Jewish Community Ar-chives and hopefully with this donation, and the re-cent donation of the Congregation Emanu-El fonds, other synagogues, organizations and businesses will see the importance of donating, making this the first step in the commitment to the long-term preser-vation and access of this invaluable material.

OUR COMMUNITY ARCHIVES

NEW ARCHIVAL ACQUISITIONS continued...

John Keenlyside’s Congregation Emanu-El collection - Early material relating to the establishment of Congregation Emanu-El: 5 manuscripts and a collection of 18 letters between the Blackman brothers (Abraham and Morris):

•Hoffman, A., Autograph Report, signed, 5 pages on foolscap, dat-ed 22 November 1862, Victoria, Vancouver Island, folded, dock-eted on outside as “Secretary’s Report Nov. 22/62”;

•Hoffman, A., 4-page autograph letter, signed and dated Victoria May 5, 1863, to “Rev. Dr. W. Adler, chief Rabbi of Eng. & its Depen-dencies, London”;

•Cohen, M.R., 2-page autograph letter signed and dated November 9, 1863-5624, from Victoria, “To the President of the Synagogue Emanu-El Victoria...”;

•Blackman, Abraham, Eighteen autograph letters, dating from 30 April 1862 to 18 February 1864;

•The Supreme Court of Civil Justice, July 7, 1864, Victoria, Sum-mary Suit #1459, J.G. Jackson, Plaintiff vs. Hoffman, Sr.;

•Tickets sold by I. Grundbaum & Jacobs, manuscript, c. 1862, Vic-toria.

[Abraham Blackman and Morris Blackman letters], April 30, 1862-February 18, 1864, Victoria, BC; John Keenlyside’s Congregation Emanu-El collection; Jewish Museum & Archives of BC; A.2012.017.004.Letter 5.

These five manuscripts are some of the earliest records extant of any activities of the first Jewish congregation on the West Coast of Canada. The 18 letters from Abraham Blackman in Victoria to his brother Morris, document the develop-ment and changes of their mercantile business in Victoria, New Westminster, and the Cariboo during the heyday of the Cariboo Gold Rush. All together this collection, albeit small is size, is one of the most important donations that the JHSBC has ever received to date. This material, together with the soon to be donated Congregation Emanu-El fonds, will give researchers the ability to study the history of the Congregation. It is because of the generosity of people like Mr. Keenlyside who sees the value in history, that the JHSBC is able to collect, document and preserve our history for future generations.
