Dear Fellowship of the Redeemed,
The Gift
There’s a story of an African boy who wanted to give a gift to his teacher, who was
going home to England. The child had no money and his options were few. The day before
the teacher was to leave, the child brought her a huge seashell. The teacher asked the boy
where he could have found such a shell. He told her there was only one spot where such
extraordinary shells could be found, and when he named the place, a certain bay many miles
away, the teacher was speechless. Why, it’s gorgeous, wonderful, but you shouldn’t have
gone all that way to get a gift for me.” His eyes brightening, the boy answered, “Long walk,
part of gift.”
May you be blessed this holiday season with the peace of having the “gorgeous and
wonderful” gift of Christ who has come into our lives. And may you be blessed in
continuing to share that gift with all kinds of people in the close of this year and in the New
Year. All of those components of being blessings to others are parts of the gift.
God’s Peace,
Pastor ’s Thoughts

To all the Congregation,
It is often said “change is inevitable, growth is optional.’
By now you are most probably aware that we are nearing the end of Pastor Webber’s time
serving as interim pastor at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. For both personal
reasons as he shared in his letter, and as part of the process to prepare ourselves for our next
called Pastor, it is time that we enter into another period of transition. We have been
blessed to have him with us during these past 20 months and are grateful for his time with
us.
Bishop Yoos, Pastor Webber, and Council have discussed how best to meet the needs of our
congregation during the transitional time between Pastor Webber’s last day on January 15
until we have called a Pastor. George Summer, Chairman of the Call Committee, shared at
our Congregational Meeting that the committee is working diligently and purposefully in
their endeavors but we are still faced with the uncertainty of when we will be ready to
extend a call. Realizing this, we believe the best path forward will be to identify someone
who can continue to serve us on the capacity of an interim pastor until we are ready to
extend a Call. We, as Council are working closely with the Synod office, to identify
possible options for that role.
Again, we thank Pastor Webber and Jeannie for their time here with us at Redeemer. We
thank you for the prayers as elected members of Church Council, your prayers for those
serving on our Call Committee, and for all members of the congregation of the Lutheran
Church of the Redeemer.
As we learn in Ecclesiastes, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter
under heaven”. Let us use this season of change for growth in our faith, in our stewardship,
and our prayers for those who have led, and will lead, us in our journey as members of the
Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
Blessings,
Erin Whitaker

December 5 and 6: St. Paul's, Columbia to present
The Fourth Wise Man
This year, the St. Paul's Players are proud to present The Fourth Wise Man, a musical
adaptation of the short story "The Other Wise Man" by Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933), an
author, educator, and clergyman who is credited with writing the lyrics for "Joyful, Joyful
We Adore Thee."
The Fourth Wise Man is the story of Artaban, a Magi who has studied the stars, who en-
deavors to journey with Caspar, Melchoir, and Balthazar to pay tribute to the Christ Child.
He carries three gifts, a sapphire, a ruby, and a pearl; however, during his travels he faces
tests and challenges. What happens when he finally has the chance to meet Jesus face-to-
face?
Join us for the St. Paul's Players' production of The Fourth Wise Man, in the Good
Shepherd Theatre at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, on the corner of Bull and
Blanding Streets in Columbia.
Friday, December 5 at 6:00 pm: DINNER THEATRE performance. The cost is $10.00
per person, to cover the cost of the meal, with advance reservations required. Call (803)
779-0030 to make reservations.

Advent
We all start to dread it…. The commercials are out, the decorations in the city
have gone up, plans for gifts and family activities are in the works. By the time
Christmas rolls around, all of us are too exhausted to enjoy it and dread each day as
it gets closer and closer.
With our daily busyness, we miss the magnificent hope that Jesus, Christ the
Savior, gives to us at his birth. We bypass the season of waiting, the season of pre-
paring, the season that helps calm our hearts and fears. We ignore that small voice in
the back whispering to us to slow down, to take time for ourselves, to take time to sit
in the presence of God. This Advent, when you find yourselves overwhelmed, when
you find yourselves frustrated with traffic, shopping, and madness that comes with
school plays, packing/family vacations, and going to and fro, go home and find time
to be in prayer and conversation with God. Gather with your family, grab a
devotional, talk about your day and how you see God at work. You can utilize the
simple Faith 5 model: Share, Read, Talk, Pray, Bless. Share about your day. Read
Scripture. Talk about the Scripture. Pray with your family. Bless each other.
Advent Devotionals and calendars, will be available in the church narthex.

21st Annual Heartland Conference Lay School of Religion
Tuesday Evenings, January 2015 : January 6, 13, 20, and 27
7 to 9pm at Grace Prosperity Church
Classes offered:
The First Book of Isaiah: The Rev. Dr. Charles P. Sigel
Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary
Many Christians know that “Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.” and “A young woman will conceive
and bear a son” come from the first chapters of Isaiah. But there are 39 chapters in the first book of Isaiah, so there
must be more. This study will examine the historical events which generated the book to seek and discover what
those lessons may say to us in our time. If you like history, this course may be for you.
Exploring the Dynamics of Healthy Congregation
The Rev. Dr. Jane Mitchum; Interim Pastor, Zion Lutheran Church
What are the dynamics of a healthy congregation? This course explores that question and helps lay persons and
rostered leaders discover ways to get their churches moving toward a state of greater health and wholeness.
The “old” in the “new”: The Rev. Dr. Christinia Wendland, Professor of Religion, Newberry College
Does the Old Testament foretell the New or does the Old Testament re-interpret the old? The relationship between
the Testaments is a fundamental topic in Christian Scholarship. In this course, we will explore this relationship by
examining the Old Testament material found in New Testament books of Matthew, Hebrews, and Revelation. Spe-
cial topics will include a comparison of the birth stories of Moses and Jesus, the roles of priests in the temple com-
pared to Jesus’ role as eternal high priest, and creation compared to New Jerusalem.
Music and Bible Study
Mrs. Stephanie Stoudemayer, Coordinator of Youth Ministry, SC Synod
Ms. Lynn Grimsley, Chorus Director at MCHS
The first hour-long session offers a time to sing a variety of praise and worship songs, including contemporary
Christian songs as well as a variety of new and traditional hymns. Inspiring stories behind the song will also be
included throughout the course of the workshop. The bible study is designed to answer questions and relate issues
that young people must face today. Come with your questions and don’t forget your bible., The class is geared to
youth in gardes 7 and above. The Youth Bible study is free. Youth are encouraged to come and bring a friend.
Registration forms can be found in the church office and at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer website. The
cost is $10.00. Checks should be made payable to Heartland School of Religion. Please mail forms and payment
