May 2013

Dear sister & brothers in Christ, Well here I am again, "back in the saddle" for at least two months here at St John's as Pastor Frank recovers from his delicate surgery. I am glad that I am available to serve in this interim capacity once more for my home congregation. It is humbling to learn of the confidence that Church Council, Pastor Frank and you have in me to serve in this pastoral role. I will not be able to be with you every Sunday since I have previous commitments with Food For The Poor, and I will not be in the office as many hours as I was last time, but I will be available to serve and look forward to this opportunity. St. John's has grown in many ways since those months that I served as an interim Pastor after Pastor David left. We have moved in many significant ways and I sure do hope that we keep this positive momentum. After his surgery Pastor Frank will have to be very careful in the recovery period. The temptation will be to "get back to normal" but that will take a good amount of time and patience. Even if we see him walking about, that is really part of the healing process and does not mean he will be ready to jump back into full-time pastoral leadership. My phone is on, the church cell phone will be with me and Anna will be in the church office so if you or someone you know needs pastoral care in the coming weeks, please do contact the office or call me. If you don't have my e-mail it is [email protected]. The Sundays of Easter will see some special events. Our young people will have led one worship service in April, the women of the church will be leading another in May, the festival of Pentecost will be celebrated and the "Operation In-As-Much" program will have again been acted out among us. It is an exciting time to be the church. As the people of God in this particular place we will all be stepping forward to ensure that vital ministries continue in these challenging times. Thank you again for this op-portunity to serve. Pastor Bob Schmeelcke

YOU ARE INVITED!!! In celebration of Mother's Day and Father's Day,

the Hospitality Committee invites all of our "moms" and "dads" to a reception in their honor on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at 10:00 AM during

the coffee hour in Fellowship Hall.

Dear St. John's Congregation: Ten days out from my surgery, I thought I'd give a short update. But first: thanks for all the prayers, cards, meals, and visits. They mean a lot and have helped greatly in keeping the Honeycutt family connected to St. John's church. Last week was very tough. The surgeon told me that "you'll feel like you've been hit by a truck." Guess I didn't believe him. Getting out of a chair was a painful challenge. This week is much better. Although I cannot lift, bend, or drive, the doctor wants me to walk as much as possible. I've been taking a short morning walk followed by a longer evening walk. The recovery period for surgery of this nature is supposed to take up to three months, but I anticipate being back among you before that. I return to the doctor this Thursday to receive a progress report. Hannah, my daughter from Columbia, has been a great help as she studies for her law school finals here in Walhalla. I heard great things about the Youth Sunday Service yesterday! Congrats to Elizabeth and all our faithful youth members. Sometimes you hear that "our youth are the future of the church." That's true, but our youth are also a vital part of the church right now! Please continue to pray for the city of Boston. In addition to Gary and Marsha Cabbage's son, my close friend Mark (a Lutheran pastor from VA) ran in the marathon. The explosions occurred less than ten minutes after Mark finished his run. Please pray for victims, their families, and our enemies (per Jesus' instructions) in these strange times. God's peace, Pastor Frank

Mr. Louis Boos ++++

Feb. 4, 1917 ~ April 25, 2013

We were deeply saddened this past month to receive news of the passing of Mr. Louis Boos. Mr. Boos played his violin beautifully

during our Sunday Worship Services. His devotion to his craft was ever evident, even in his 96th year. Our prayers are with his

devoted son, Peter, and the entire Boos family.

What would Easter morning be without breakfast prepared by the Men In Mission!. Special thanks to

Allen Harding, Gene Burnside, John Hawbecker, Dave Lewis, and

Rudy Nothdurft for the wonderful feast they prepared. They arrive at the church at 6am to begin preparations and work until noon cleaning up, and that does not in-

clude the shopping and prep work they do the day prior. Breakfast was served to `150 people this year.St John’s is very grateful for all your hard work- we are so fortu-

nate to have you.

The Church Office and the SJ Preschool would like to thank the Lucy Klaren Circle for the lovely lunch you all provided for us this past month. YUM! Steak House chicken and fixins were enjoyed to the fullest. Thank

CHEFS FOR SHUT-INS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Like to cook, enjoy visiting with our seniors and shut-ins, looking for a way to utilize your Spiritual Gifts? Look no further...Our Chefs groups need YOU. "Chefs for Shut-ins" is a ministry at St John's that caters to our seniors and shut-ins. Twice a month we prepare

and deliver a home-cooked meal to those in our congregation who need a little TLC (tender loving care). Chefs 1 delivers the first Thursday of the month, Chefs 2 delivers

the third Thursday of the month. Members prepare a part of the meal- main course, des-sert, salad, bread, vegetable, etc. Not only are you delivering a well balanced meal, but you are also providing a time of companionship. The companionship sometimes means more than the meal to our recipients. Please consider volunteering to help. Can’t cook…

no problem…we need people to deliver to a senior and spend quality time with them. Can’t deliver…no problem…we can use you to cook a part of the meal. This is an excellent opportunity to use the gifts God has given us-giving

back to those in our congregation who have given us so much over the years. Sign-up today at the Spiritual Opportunities table.

Jan’s WELCA Words Hi Ladies! This month we have some exciting things planned for our Women of the ELCA members. To start, we celebrate Rachel’s Day. This is the day that women boldly speak up against the violence many children face every day. Many children today fear they will not grow up to be adults. They also fear drugs, guns, gangs, going home to an empty house, poor edu-cation, illness, hunger, unsafe streets, that friends will kill themselves, being unloved, and be-ing alone. These burdens are too great for our children to bear alone.

Most congregations observe this day with a blue ribbon – a symbol of hope. This year we will be distributing blue sili-cone bracelets to remember our children. These bracelets may be worn any time to remind you to pray for the children who live with injustice, terror, disease and death as their constant companions. Perhaps through our efforts, we can eliminate the cruelty to these our neighbors. Later in this month, May 26th, we will celebrate our Women of the ELCA Sunday. All of our WELCA Sunday service participants will be women, featuring a sermon from our own Cathy Plowden. Please plan to attend to show our con-gregation how much we women support St. John’s and all our ministry opportunities. Early next month, June 7th & 8th is our annual Women of the ELCA convention to be held at ST. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Lexington SC. We have some exciting things planned to include Lesley Nease as our keynote speaker. Les-lie is one of the morning hosts on His Radio (FM 89.3) and her messages are filled with real life issues, humor and practical application from God's Word. There are many other great things to share this year – make sure you get your registration in so you can join us! I urge you to mark your calendars and encourage you to support us in as many events and projects as you can sup-port. Without you, we could not accomplish so many wonderful things! May 5th – Rachel’s Day May 26th – WELCA Sunday June 7th & 8th – WELCA convention Thank you, each and every one of you, for all that you do. Your Sister in Christ, Jan Long WELCA President

FINANCIAL REPORT May 2013

Project Status Report as of March 31, 2013 Biggerstaff / SCLRC Project – In August 2006 our congregation approved, in principle, partnering with the SC Lutheran Retreat Centers, the ultimate goal to ‘make Biggerstaff a year-round destination for the faith-ful throughout the Synod and the nation’. Thus, Biggerstaff would become the up-state site to complement Camp Kinard in the mid-lands and Coastal retreat on Isle of Palms. Synod approved a five year, 7.5 million dollar Capital Campaign for raising funds for the three sites, the ‘Building, Renewing, Believing Campaign’. Of the total, Biggerstaff was allocated 3.7m, Kinard & Coastal 1.9 million each. First priority being Coastal followed by Kinard, with us last. The pending ‘Agreement to Lease’ will allow St John’s to retain all monies generated until such time as the actual ‘Ground Lease’ is executed, which, in turn, will not occur until the SCLRC is in position to begin con-struction within six months and have expectations that the project will be completed within two years. Beginning balance $ 50092.67 Received during month $20.00 Ending balance $50112.67 Sign Fund: The congregation approved spending $7,000 to pay for costs associated with a new sign for front lawn. Beginning balance $5209.15 Rec’d this month $50.00 Ending balance $5259.15 Loan from Cemetery Fund: Due to shortfall in offering compared to budgeted expenses the general fund started borrowing money from the Cemetery Fund early in 2012 to meet expenses.
