Jesus’s most loyal friendsJesus’s most loyal friendsJesus’s most loyal friendsJesus’s most loyal friends Do you have a loyal friend? You know,
somebody who will be your friend all the time,
even when other people decide not to be?
Maybe you’ve had a friend who was not
loyal...somebody who ignored you when he or she
felt like it.
Today is the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women.
These women were some of Je-
sus’s most loyal friends. When
Jesus was arrested, they stayed
loyal to Him. When Jesus was
put on the Cross, these women stayed loyal to Him.
Even after Jesus died, they stayed loyal to Him and
brought sweet-smelling myrrh to the tomb. They
thought His body would be there.
The myrrh-bearing women stayed loyal to Christ during
the hardest and most dangerous part of His life on earth.
And God rewarded them. They were the very first people
to know that Christ had risen!
When they came to the tomb, the women found an angel there. “He has risen!”
the angel told them. Christ had risen, and the women stayed loyal to Him still!

SAINT IRENE
A GREAT MARTYR
Lots and lots of the saints of our
church lived about 1,600 years ago.
Why? Because the emperors were all pa-
gan. They worshipped idols, false gods
who weren’t God. In those days, nobody
could worship our God and get away with
it.
St. Irene lived in Greece during this time.
Her father was the king, Licinius. He locked
her in a tower all through her childhood so
she wouldn’t learn about Christ. But she
found out about Him anyway, and was baptized.
Her father was so angry that she had become a Christian that he did
something awful. He sent his daughter to be trampled by horses. But
what happened then? The horses wouldn’t move. Instead they came
after the king, Licinius. When he saw this miracle, he and his whole
family, and 3,000 other people became Christian. They knew then
that this was the true faith.
Finally, a new king came along. He refused to let Irene live as a Christian
in peace (Irene means “peace”), so he had her killed. But now, of course,
Saint Irene lives in peace with our Lord!
We celebrate Saint Irene’s day tomorrow, on May 5th.
