BREAKING NEWSGreat news in the pool ....another Immortal was created... SEAN NEALE.Sean started the night off winning the 400 in commanding style. Then followed up with a win in the 50 freestyle, swimming 0.03s over his handicap. No pressure for Sean as he lined up for the last race of the evening, 25 freestyle. Murray Coble & Sean powered stroke for stroke up the pool at breakneck speed. They touched almost together however Sean won by 0.01sec taking him into Cheetah Immortality.Sean joins other Immortals.....Steve Mathews, John Romyn, Sid Hammond, Bob Carlon, Michael Holt, Tom Beat, Denis O’Connor & Peter Elford. Heartiest congratulations Sean.

CRONULLA SWIMThe Cronulla Sharks winter carnival was held recently. Unfortunately a number of regular attendees withdrew due to various reasons, so we only had 4 swimming on the night. All in all it was a successful carnival with 7 other clubs attending however the Cheetahs came away with no chocolates. We are always made very welcome by the Sharks & they are looking forward to the Cheetahs defending their fabulous win in the Shark Shield last year. The next carnival will be in October.

MONTHLY POINT SCOREThe winner of the June Monthly Point Score was John Elliott with 57 points.Following closely behind were John Keevers (41), Greg Chalmers (40) & Peter Flood (39).The July Monthly Point Score winner was David Pugh with 55 points, closely followed by Peter Flood with 51 points & then Ian McLennan (47), Rob Rathborne (46) & John Elliott & Denis Ward with 41 points.

Congratulations to all those winners. It shows that those who attend regularly nearly always end up in the winners’ circle.

VICE PRESIDENTS’

TROPHYEveryone’s favourite the 400 freestyle is the swim for the Vice Presidents’ Trophy. The difference is that swimmers nominate their time. This event turned out to be one for the records.....All swimmers were very cautious in nominating their time & all took a very conservative approach. So much so that 70% of the swimmers broke time. Nearly everyone approached the judges later claiming they should’ve stuck with their handicapped time. C’est la vie !!!Back to the racing & those in the later heats worked out what was happening & swam decidedly slower than usual in the hope of winning this prized trophy. The eventual winner was Sean Neale who swam a great race, a plus 6.32sec & was the forerunner for later glory.

PRESIDENTS

TROPHYThe President made a rush return from Fiji, where he was celebrating his 70th birthday with his family, to attend his most prestigious trophy. The Cheetah who was closest to his handicap for the 3 events (75 medley, 50 freestyle & 25 breastroke) would be declared the winner. How close it was.... swimming 0.70 sec. outside his handicap was Ekkehard Kostbahn. Closely following up for 2nd was Rob Rathborne (whose prize would be nothing, nix, zilch) with 0.95 sec. The Moth shouted a guzzillion Tiger Prawns afterwards which were greatly appreciated by all.

THE BIG SWIMThere was great interest at Leichhardt Pool the other Sunday when a good friend of the Cheetahs, Annie Hemmings, took on a huge challenge.Annie is a member of the Balmain Kool Kats Winter Swimming Club & has been going through a tough time lately having treatment for breast cancer.Thankfully, after 5 months of chemotherapy & radiation, the treatment has been successful. So much so that Annie has undertaken a fund raising effort for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.Part of that fund raising was to swim 15km (15,000metres), 300 laps, which is the number of people, male & female, that will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. So, the big day arrived & many Cheetahs were on hand to support her, either swimming laps or assisting with fund raising. There’s a rumour going around that a certain Cheetah who is adverse to swimming long distances actually swam many 400s in support. Also in support were members of the Wests Tigers & a couple of past Tigers players as well as members of the Kool Kats.Annie completed the challenge in around 6 hours....a fantastic effort .A significant amount of money was raised. In fact, the Cheetahs donated $500 to the cause.

HERON ISLANDPlans for the trip to Heron Island are progressing well. There are 18 Cheetahs swimming in the various events. In discussions with those that have done this swim previously, the comments are unanimous in that this is one of the great ocean swims with crystal clear water & heaps of sea life. Already many Cheetahs are in training, some secretly, however some are more open about their training. Spotted at Coogee the other week was none other than the Eastern Suburbs legend, Bob Lowe, having just completed a swim to Wedding Cake Island (and back).

THE AGING PROCESS Is this the way......You want to live your life backwards: You start out dead & get that out of the way. Then you wake up in a nursing home feeling better every day. Then you get kicked out for being too healthy. You enjoy your retirement & collect your pension. Then, when you start work you get a gold watch on your first day. You work for 40 years until you are too young to work. You get ready for high school: drink alcohol, party & are promiscuous. Then you go to primary school, you become a kid, you play & you have no responsibilities. Then you become a baby, then you spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in spa-like conditions – central heating, room service on tap, then you finish as an orgasm.

INTO 21st CENTURYThe Cheetahs have moved into the world of social media.Captain Keevers has undertaken the massive project of setting up a Facebook page for the Cheetahs. Why??? It is another form of getting the Cheetahs message out. If you want to leave a message for all to see....put it on Facebook. If you have some photos that would be of interest to Cheetahs...put it on Facebook. To access the Cheetahs’ page log into Facebook & then search for...City Tatts Cheetahs. For those who have had exposure to Facebook from their kids or whatever .... be careful as to what you include on our site. Also if you don’t want to use Facebook & you have some items, photos etc. you wish to share, please give them to Keeves or Macca & they will include them onour web site (or include them in Chatter).

WINTER SWIMMINGThe other Sunday at Bondi Icebergs Pool those hardy souls who swim for one of the many winter swimming clubs up & down the coast participated in the South Metropolitan Championships, which is a forerunner to the Aussie Champs later in the year.Several Cheetahs were successful in their respective events. Captain John Keevers was 2nd in the 60 & over, beaten by a fingernail by his long term nemesis Neil Rogers.Terry Heavener was 3rd in 65 & over & joined John Keevers in winning the 60 years relay for the mighty Clovelly Eskimos.President Steve Mathews, Sid Hammond, Greg Chalmers & Campbell Gould were members of the Balmain Kool Kats relay team which won the Nominated Time 10 a side relay with a margin of 0.06seconds. Sid reckons it was no fluke to get so close to their nominated time as he had

poured over earlier results for hours before coming up with the winning time !!!!!They also made the finals of their respective age groups & swam with true Cheetah dedication & resolve.Delving into the archives here’s a photo taken in 1965 when the Cheetahs decided to run the Wally Buxton Challenge against winter swimming clubs, Maroubra Seals & Bondi Icebergs. The photo includes some old faces namely... Ted Andrews, Tom Caddy, Jack Campbell, Jamie Jenkins, Jack Primo, Don Jenkins, John Wallace, Vic Luckhurst to name a few.

MARATHON MANPaul Birch is at it again. He has been concentrating on his running of late & is seldom seen poolside. However it is paying dividends. Recently he competed in the Gold Coast Half Marathon came 209th in a field of 8,533 in a time of 1h:24:47, a PB for PB.

GOLF WEEKENDOur golf reporter, VP David Pugh, writes on the recent golf weekend........A group of 13 Cheetahs, partners & friends headed off to the Southern Highlands on 4 July for the annual winter golf weekend.Clear blue skies made the trip down on the M5 a pleasant one but when the car doors opened on arrival the cold wind was there to greet us.The warm fire at The Briars Inn welcomed us to a very enjoyable country style lunch before checking into Dormie House & then 9 holes at Moss Vale Golf Club. The course was in very good condition & continues to improve every year we visit. By 5pm that cold wind persuaded the golfers to head straight to the bar for a warming Bundy & coke (or 2).During dinner the teams were announced for Saturday’s golf competition, teeing off at the very social time of 8:30am.

Group 1 Group 2 Group 3David Pugh Eddie Wilkie Genevieve SlatteryVal Wilkie Sharon Bonello Malcolm RichardsonMichael Slattery Fred Geddes Denis Ward

Another crisp, clear morning made for perfect golfing conditions. We played an Ambrose format which meant everyone was able to contribute to what turned out to be as very high standard of golf (well for us anyway!!!).In the first place was Group 1, second was Group 3 & third Group 2 – all teams made the podium.Nearest to the pin went to Genevieve Slattery & the Drive & Chip went to David Pugh.Denis chose some great wines for prizes which were presented in the dining room after a tasty Christmas in July dinner. We also welcomed Vicki Geddes’s mum who joined us for dinner on Saturday night – what a lovely lady. Thanks also to Barbara Richardson for being the team photographer. There was an after dinner snooker competition but it took so long to finish, no one can remember who won!!!

from the

archivesA bit of a change in the Archives this month. There is always talk in football about the toughness of footballers & that toughness sometimes leads to the odd “blue” on the field. So here is a column that appeared in “The Sydney Sportsman” on June 19th, 1928 written by that great Aussie icon A.B (Banjo) Paterson.“Let The Punishment Fit The Crime”There appears to be an epidemic of stouch & roughhouse tactics creeping into the league game of football & several players in club matches were sent off in Sydney last Saturday, while an Englishman was similarly dealt with in Brisbane. In the argot of the football fans the boys are making it a bit too willing.Dirty work at the crossroads or in the scrums needs putting down in the interests of the game, but it is questionable whether the punishment of “sending off” exactly meets the necessities of the game. The public pay to see a football match fought out on equal terms & the sending off of a star player does away with half the interest in the contents. Surely some way could be devised by which punishment could be meted out, without the game being interfered with.

A host of suggestions rise to mind, but one workmanlike method be to let the punishment fit the crime & provide that anyone looking for a fight can make sure of finding it.Any player using his fists or his boot with ant spiteful intent should be compelled to go four rounds or so with a trained pug kept for the purpose on the sidelines. This would add spice of variety to the matches & should make for cleaner conduct on the field.Players would control their tempers a lot better if they knew that any outburst of pugnacity would inevitably bring its retribution in the shape of a good hiding from a man who knew how to use his hands, lopsided games would be done away with, and the conduct of the players on the field would be an example toany Sunday school.”Interesting !!!!

A TRAVELLERS TALEA Cheetah who shall remain anonymous has given the editor a snippet of his trip to the sub continent. His story goes.......“We were being driven from Agra after seeing the Taj Mahal on our way to Jaipur. I was suddenly struck with the dreaded Delhi Belly & had to request our driver/guide to stop urgently in the middle of nowhere. I hurried off with toilet paper in hand to squat beside a wall next to a railway line. We didn’t see any trains all trip & wouldn’t you know one came along at the exact moment of my indisposition. At first I thought it was a goods train & then I realised it was a passenger train & there were faces at most of the windows watching my progress. As our guide observed on my return to the car “anything can happen in India!”
