Over the last few months I have been leading some research around the use of Visible Learning techniques and Flexible Learning Space in the classroom. I have been doing this on behalf of the Nimbin Community of Schools partnership. This has involved visiting and working with Warialda Public School, Macintyre High School (Inverell) and South Coogee Public (Sydney) as well as meeting with representatives from Corwin Education. I was able to collect data by interviewing staff and students, observing lessons and taking photos of how classrooms have been redesigned. Visible Learning means an enhanced role for teachers as they become evaluators of their own teaching. Visible Teaching and Learning occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of students and help them become their own teachers. Some aspects include the use of data walls, student assessment portfolios, daily teacher to student feedback and ‘Learning Intentions’ to establish success criteria. The learning intention of a lesson, or series of lessons, tells students what they should know, understand and be able to do, and the success criteria helps teachers to decide whether their students have in fact achieved the learning intention. Flexible Classrooms (learning spaces) involves the use of flexible furniture, or furniture that can be rearranged or adapted to suit the classroom space, the lesson or for the students comfort. It increases the floor space in the classroom where students are able to chose where they would work best. It is an effective strategy when the students are working in groups. I will be presenting a report back to Rebecca Langdon (Director of Schools) and colleagues from across the Nimbin Network of schools so that we can all work together to manufacture a change and culture in the way in which we teach, and the students learn, by implementing these strategies. A New Initiative

Bringing After School Care & Music Lessons Together The After School Care program is an initiative that I am passionate in supporting and music education has always been an interest from an early age. With the dual role of teacher, principal, and everything else that comes with the job, means that the music lessons are not occurring as much as I would have hoped. However, I am not one to quit,

but rather look outside the square for an alternative solution. So here is what I am proposing…

Aim: To increase the enrolments in the After School Care Service and teach music lessons more regularly.

Method: 1. Talk to the students to find out what they want out of the service, i.e. activities to do

2. Write a shopping list and purchase some of the items requested

3. Offer music lessons during after school care activities at the cost of the After School Care Service for

those people interest.

Incentive: By enrolling in and attending the After School Care Program, there will be no additional cost for the music.

E.g. At present, if a child does music lessons it costs $12.50 per lesson. If they also attend the After School

care, then it would cost on average $15, totalling $37.50.

However, what I am proposing is that if a student that attends music lessons and wants to join the Active After School program it would only cost them $15. This means that the student gets afternoon tea, activities and a music lesson

and it would cost on average just $15, not $37.50 (including Financial Rebates—i.e. based on income status)

How would it work Mr Manser? I’m glad you asked…

Chris Ward would still run the After School Program and provide the activities and afternoon tea. The students would

participate in activities such as cooking, screen printing, button making, sports, craft, technology, lego club etc.

Mr Manser would get each music student to work with him, one at a time in the music room, which is in the same

location as the After School Care service, which is the old school house.

Results/Outcome: - After School Care enrolments increase, keeping the service running

- Students would be given more music lessons per term as Mr Manser has more available time

after school with less admin duties, interruptions and phone calls etc.

- The students would no longer need to be pulled out of the classroom and miss work.

- It is cost effective for families and a great deal!

- The students get to interact with each other in a supervised, fun, social setting

- The service supports families that need after school assistance due to work, social or sporting

commitments.

What can you do? Contact Rainbow Region Kids ASAP and enrol

The current service runs on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, however if there is growth on other days there is the potential for the program to include a Monday,

Thursday or even Friday.

For those parents who are not interested in enrolling in the After School Care Program, the music lessons would still be offered to and run for your child at a cost of

$12.50.

News from Mrs Cantrell.

Last week in Maths we were learning about Area. We focussed on learning what a perimeter is and how all the space inside the perimeter is the area. We made robots using grid paper and measured their area. This week we are learning about mass and what it is and the different ways we measure mass. We are using words such as 'heavier and lighter'. We have also begun a new phonics program called 'Words Their Way'. This program helps to develop the students' awareness of how words are made, how we look at the beginning, middle and ends of words and what sounds different combinations of

letters make.

Public Speaking Semi-Final

Maude Webster has followed a long line of fellow Channon students by making it through to the Grand Final of the Community of Schools Public Speaking Competition. Our school has always been successful in this field, and this was once again shown by the outstanding presentations that

our year 3/6 students demonstrated in our in school competition last term.

Maude was joined by Ethan, Lillyana and Hunter as representatives from our school. We are extremely proud of these four students as they made their presentations with confidence and pride. Our students will be able to watch Maude and others compete in the grand final next Friday before swimming. The topics that the students presented in the semi-final were, ‘My perfect holiday’ - Lillyana Smith (Year 5), ‘Why I’m on Santa’s naughty/nice list’ - Ethan Monks (Year 6), ‘What is the least dangerous animal on

the planet’ - Hunter Smith (Year 4), and ‘Should boys and girls have separate classrooms’ - Maude Webster (Year 3)

You will be able to see these presentations at the Christmas Concert.

School Swimming Scheme

Each year, all students in K/6 participate in an annual Swimming Scheme program. This year it will be held at the Trinity Swimming Pool in Lismore from Monday, 12th November until Friday 16th November, 2018 (Week 5). The students will

participate in two swimming lessons each day and will be participating with the students and staff from Corndale Public School.

This year Mr Manser has successfully gained a grant so the program will be fully subsidised by the Sporting in Schools program

so there is no cost to students or to the P&C.

All students will be assessed on day 1 and put into groups based on their ability. The swimming instructors are AustSwim trained

and have skills in working with students, with most being qualified teachers as well.

We request that all students wear their swimming costumes under their school clothes to school each morning and to bring a towel and a dry set of clothes. It is also recommended that the students have goggles to wear as the pool is chlorinated.

A follow up permission note is attached to this newsletter. Please return the permission note by Friday, 9th November 2018.

News from Miss Mim

Last term the students in the senior class participated in the study of an 'Extreme Climate' in Geography. The students have been researching, documenting, graphing, and even building their environments as dioramas. This term we have used our dioramas as the backdrops to film a stop motion animation about their extreme climate. The students have done an awesome job demonstrating what they have learnt in the most interesting and creative ways!

This term the K/1/2 class is looking at history though transport. Last week we had some really rich discussions while we built this 'transport timeline' and imagined what life was like before the invention of the wheel. While we continue to explore artistic concepts such as texture, line, space and colour all our art will have a transport vibe this term. If you

get a moment, there are some beautiful ships at sea hanging in the school foyer.

News from Rena The last two weeks have been very busy in the 3/4/5/6 classroom. We have been exploring measurement and are now up to mass. The children have been weighing various objects to understand how to estimate different weights and how they relate to each other. Students drew their own area on the carpet to get an idea of how big a metre

square is and they constructed a cubic metre out of wood.

This hot weather has been very harsh on our garden and we have lost nearly all our seedlings. It takes time to look after baby plants. On a positive note the kids have started their art projects for our huge art exhibition down at the Teahouse. Kathy has kindly let us exhibit in her art gallery space at no charge to the kids. It is wonderful for the

children to get the opportunity to exhibit their work in a public space.
