more than 13,000 children attended the 550 programs we provided!

New Canaan is a family town, and the Library is a center of family life. Our specialist librarians offer fun, engaging programs for infants, through to tweens and teens that support literacy and develop a broad range of skills.

Our programs run the gamut from storytimes and crafts, to coding and robotics, to youth book and cooking clubs, to sewing and making

workshops, and much more. There were lots of Arts programs including a Great Family Art Day that saw more than 250 participants!

We had music and drama and of course a lot of books and reading, including Book Babies, Winter Reading Bingo, Young Critics, Pizza and Pages and the Book Explorers club.

This year,

We hosted several new fundraising events this year including the Premiere of the Great Gilly Hopkins. With partner New Canaan Wine Merchants we hosted a wine tasting event. Over 100 of us went to Amélie, a Broadway musical! Our Literary Luncheon brought author Paula McLain to town. Finally in June almost 300 New Canaanites joined us for great food, music and dancing under the tent.

Our family feels blessed to have New Canaan Library as a family destination. We are

voracious readers and love the experiential learning opportunities: Crazy 8s, Art Detectives, story

times, Lego Master Builder, holiday programs, exotic

animals, art, and more. We visit the Library 3-5 times weekly, and consider the staff our friends.

My husband also enjoys the audio books, streaming new & classic Jazz, and E-books for his commute.

The library is a real hub for the community.

To lead is to inspire. At the New Canaan Library, we try to lead by example every day. The

increasingly diverse programming and the expansion of our Maker Lab are perfect examples.

However, with use of the library exploding, our ability to be best in class is challenged without a suitable facility that allows us to grow and thrive. As President of the

We visit the library almost every day during the summer—and regularly during the school year.

My children spend a lot of time reading in the Children’s Room. They love working in the Maker Lab—an amazing experience hub where they learn new technology:

When I was at Center School in the 1970s, my mother would let me take out as

many books as my little arms could hold. She then let me stay up late, as long as I was “in bed reading.” In Middle School, the Library became the place for homework with friends. Today I see the Library

as a sanctuary in town, a place to learn and to commune. While it is a haven for individual study

and growth, it also brings the town together across ages and politics and interests. The thoughtful programming has something for everyone.

And there’s no place in New Canaan like the Library. All roads lead here. For people of every age, every interest, every pursuit, there’s a story, a class, a lecture, a movie, an article, a program. In every corner during any time of the day, there is the possibility of

discovery, contemplation, conversation, laughter, fascination, engagement. Whether it’s information or culture being sought, no one leaves unchanged.

LEGACY GIVING

I have been so fortunate to have had a long and lasting relationship with our Library. Our family has lived in New

Canaan since 1997. I served on the Library Board from 2004–2010 and returned last year.

It has been one of the most rewarding endeavors to support

the mission of our Library to be the intellectual and cultural center of our community.

To protect, preserve and advance its mission, I decided to make a bequest to the library. It is simple to do and I am encouraged that all the time, energy, and support that I have devoted to this wonderful town asset will be assured for future generations.

The large tables and WiFi are perfect for entrepreneurs like me. I love the small private

meeting spaces, where I have done everything from conference calls to podcast interviews.

Plus, I haven’t even mentioned all the books, magazine and reference titles. I always encourage my fellow entrepreneurs to use the library... and use it often!
