MissionThe Center for Real Estate Education & Research in the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University is directed by three primary objectives:1. To create new knowledge and provide expert analysis through

academic and empirical research in all aspects of real estate.2. To guide the direction of the real estate academic curriculum

at The Ohio State University which will provide students with a multi-disciplinary, real world approach to comprehending real estate.

3. To provide programs and opportunities that expand students understanding of real estate, connect them with professionals in the real estate industry and enhance their chance of acquiring their ideal job and/or internship.

e Center for Real EstateEducation & Research

Vision3

Through a multidisciplinary education and relevant job training informed by cutting-edge research we will train the next generation of leaders in the real estate industry. The Center will bring together university communities to build innovative, cross-curricular real estate initiatives in research, teaching, and mentorship. Through these programs the Center for Real Estate will help attract the best students to the Fisher College of Business and provide them the training necessary to prepare them for a wide range of successful careers. Local, regional, and national organizations will increasingly identify graduates of The Ohio State University as the most qualified candidates for jobs that require the full breadth of knowledge of the real estate industry.

The Center for Real Estate will also connect students, faculty, and staff with real estate professionals, and community and government leaders to create greater synergy between the state’s education and training infrastructure and its economic development initiatives. These partnerships will help develop sustainable neighborhoods and communities which will provide the infrastructure and services that make communities flourish. As a result, our program will improve the community and accelerate regional economic development by attracting talented and highly educated students, faculty and industry professionals to study, teach, research and live within The Ohio State University community.

Project Analysis Series

DescriptionOnce per quarter, we bring in all of the players involved in a major local real estate development. From conception to completion they cover the entire process of how the project came to being – where the idea came from, how it got off the ground, what went right, what went wrong, what they’d change, etc. This series is about showing students the whole picture, from the very beginning to the present, of how a project gets done. Certainly, the event is in no way a method to critique the project. Rather, we expect that through a thoughtful, retrospective narrative of a specific project, the group of panelists will be able to provide insight on how things work in “the real world.” We created this series with the hope that students, with little or no experience, will be able to gain a better understanding of how the business works, one project at a time.

Academic Curriculum

This capstone Real Estate Development workshop is a pioneering effort to bring together students and faculty from multiple Colleges within the University to simulate real-world development collaboration. A case study, derived from an actual and current central Ohio real estate development project, will give students the opportunity to work in cross-functional teams to develop a proposal and present to a panel of industry leaders.

The course will expose students to the breadth of the real estate development process by combining real estate expertise and real-world practical knowledge. This approach to learning provides students the theoretical foundation and the practical application to allow for comprehensive real estate skill development.

The multiple steps of the development process will be taught by various professors from several colleges, as well as industry leaders. Lectures will cover many aspects of the development cycle, including: Real Estate Law, Architecture and Design, Urban Planning, Construction Management, Geography, Finance, and Real Estate and Property Management.

The Center for Real EstateEducation and Research

Current Initiatives

Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration – We’re proud to be grooming know-it-alls. Our students aren’t just taught real estate nance – they’re taught the whole industry. We collaborate with the colleges of Architecture and Regional Planning, Law, Geogra-phy, Construction Management, Civil Engineering and Environmental Resources to impart our students with all the knowledge they need to be successful right out of the gate. We are working together to form a ground breaking curriculum, further research and create new knowledge and provide opportunities for student’s educa-tional and experiential growth. Eventually, we hope this collaboration will lead to a one year's Masters program in Real Estate.

Mentor Program – A unique opportunity to learn about the industry from the inside. Students are partnered with leading real estate industry professionals in a one-to-one match. Students gain knowledge of the industry, experience networking with professional and get advice on everything from class projects to career decisions.

e REView – Informative, engaging and accessible. Our topical magazine is written by students, faculty and professionals. Focusing on one relevant theme each issue, each article oers comprehensive insight, informed opinions and diverse ideas about issues confronting the real estate industry today. Published once per year in the spring.

Project Analysis Series – We show students the whole picture. Once per quarter, we bring in all of the players involved in a major local real estate development. From conception to completion they cover the entire process of how the project came to being – what went right, what went wrong, what they’d change, etc. Projects include South Campus Gateway and Easton Mall.

Site Walk-rough Series – Seeing is understanding. Several times a year students are invited to take an educational tour of the site of a nearly completed project. e tours, conducted by the lead developer, lead architect and construction manager, oer incredible insight to how a project is developed, designed and constructed.

Current Topic Discussion Series – Today’s trends with tomorrow’s insight. Once per quarter we gather up a few industry leaders to discuss an emerging topic in the real estate industry. In a panel discussion format, industry leaders share their knowledge and vision with large student audiences. Topics include environmental sustainabil-ity, international real estate, etc.

Current Initiatives Continued...

Speaker Series – So much more than just lectures. Our speakers provide penetrating insight to a wide breadth of topics in a casual, interactive environment. Often in a panel discussion format, industry leaders are brought in several times each quarter to share their experiences and expertise with large student audiences. Topics include real estate economic forecasts, local real estate growth markets , campus housing, etc.

Mixer Series – Often in real estate, it’s not just what you know, but who you know. In an eort to grow student’s professional network of contacts, we partner with national and international organizations to connect students to future employers. Organizations include ULI, NAIOP, IREM, CCIM, ICSC.

Argus Certication – We teach our students how the pros do it. In collaboration with Argus Software, Ohio State is part of a pilot program to certify students in the industry standard commercial real estate cash ow projection, transaction analysis and asset valuation solution software.

Scholarships – Pay your way through school by working in the classroom. We want students to focus on their education, not how they’re going to pay for it. e Center oers more than $30,000 annually to aid students in their quest for the best real estate education.

Real Estate Library – Our knowledge runs deep. We house an ever-growing comprehensive real estate library of more than 50 current and classic real estate books and leading industry periodicals. A special section is devoted to career guides in real estate. All books and periodicals are available to loan for student use.

National Case Competitions – Guided, practical experience. Our students compete annually in one of the most prestigious real estate case competition in the world, the ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition. We regularly eld several teams and partner with the Knowlton School of Architecture and our local ULI chapter to provide professional mentors to each team.

Fisher Real Estate Society (FRES) – We work closely with our student organiza-tions. Both are very active in planning and partnering on all of our events. e undergraduate Chapter has over 60 active members while the graduate chapter has approximately 15 active members.
