History of the University• The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is a chartered, private and ISO 9001:2008 certified Christian university. It is a regional university founded by the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA). Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia are the member countries of AMECEA.
• CUEA started in a modest way, as a graduate school of Theology known as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA)
• Founded in 1984 by AMECEA. On 18 August 1985, it was formally opened by Pope John Paul II (now Saint). In 1989, the Institute obtained the "Letter of Interim Authority" and it was Chartered in November 1992
