A CALL TO PRAYER _____________________
Mother of All Peoples, Pray for Us!
BY SAINT JOHN PAUL II
Mother of all men and women,
Mother of all peoples,
you know all of our sufferings
and all of our hopes.
You have a mother’s knowledge
of the struggle between good and evil,
between light and darkness,
which afflict our modern world.
Accept the cries
that we address directly
to your mother’s heart.
Embrace with a mother’s love
this world of ours,
which we entrust and consecrate to you;
for we are full of worry
for the earthly and eternal destiny
of all peoples.
Glory to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever.
Amen! Alleluia!
Mother of the Living Gospel, Pray for Us!
BY POPE FRANCIS
Mary, Virgin and Mother,
you were moved by the Holy Spirit
to welcome the Word of Life
in the depth of your humble faith.
As you gave yourself completely
to the Eternal One,
help us to say our own ‘yes’ to the urgent call,
now more than ever,
to proclaim the Good News of Jesus.
Mother of the Living Gospel,
wellspring of happiness
for God’s little ones, pray for us!
Glory to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever.
Amen! Alleluia!

THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE _____________________
Mary, Mother All Peoples
BY CLIFF GARVEY
At the dawn of the new millennium two decades ago, Pope John Paul II entrusted
all people and all nations into the care of our Blessed Mother. In a prayer composed
for the Jubilee of Families (see page 2), the pope calls Mary the Mother of all peo-
ples, the Mother of all men and women everywhere. He reminds us that Mary
knows all of our hopes, all of our struggles, and all of our sufferings. He reminds us
that Mary listens to us with a mother’s heart and embraces us with a mother’s love.
Pope John Paul tells us to trust her and to offer ourselves into her maternal care.
If you are a mother or if you were once a child loved well by your mother, grand-
mother, or godmother, then this prayer speaks to your heart. It speaks to your soul.
And it speaks to our collective understanding of the relationship between a mother
and her child, between a mother and her children. A mother’s love is attentive, au-
thoritative, creative, deep, and devoted. A mother’s love is firm, generous, helpful,
patient, and understanding. Our mothers love us as we are, for who we are, as if we
are singularly the only object of their love. A mother’s love is never one-size-fits-all.
It is all encompassing, custom made, heaven sent, but still imperfect.
The Blessed Mother’s love is all of these things and more. Mary’s love is perfect,
pure, and unsullied by sin or selfishness. She loves Jesus perfectly. She loves each
one of us perfectly, too. Her love for us is not temporal, not confined to this life. Her
love is unaffected by something as trivial as the longevity of a beating heart. Her
love is abiding, enduring, and timeless. Mary’s love transcends life itself. It is a love
that lives within our hearts. It is a love that lives beyond our hearts. It is a love that
lives in our souls. It is a love that lives forever and ever.
At the same time, the Blessed Mother’s love for us is active, concrete, and quite prac-
tical. Like every good mother, Mary knows her children well. She knows us better
than we know ourselves. She knows us through and through. She sees the core of
our being. She reads our hearts. And she loves us anyway. Like every good mother,
Mary is guide, teacher, and role model. She has the unique ability to shower us with
praise and affirmation. And like every good mother, she also has the unique ability
to poke and prod our consciences toward contrition, repentance, and right action.
Like every good mother, Mary takes each of her children, one by one, by the hand.
She walks with us, step by step. She prays with us, prayer by prayer. She advocates
for us. She intercedes for us. She celebrates with us. She suffers with us. She weeps
with us. She points the way to Jesus. She shows us the way to Jesus. And she prays
our way into heaven. Saint Thomas Aquinas, the thirteenth century monk and theo-
logian writes: “As mariners are guided into port by the shining of a star, so we are
guided to heaven by Mary.” On this different and difficult Mother’s Day, when so
many of us miss our mothers and grandmothers, let us raise our hearts and voices in
fervent prayer to the Blessed Mother of all people and cry out in a spiritual com-
munion with Pope Francis: “Mother of the Living Gospel, wellspring of happiness
for God’s little ones, pray for us!” Happy Mother’s Day!

A MOTHER’S VOICE _____________________
Made for Joy
BY KATHY COFFEY
Thou shalt be joyful! Groans might greet this hypothetical eleventh commandment. Where are
we supposed to cram joy on an overloaded to-do list? Does it go before or after the litany of
chores, bills, and family obligations? All we want is to make it through the crunch of the week,
then collapse in exhaustion. Sad, but true. This stressed state of affairs points clearly toward the
need for an eleventh commandment demanding joy. The rationale is this: If we were made for
eternal joy, then we should start now. We are more than cogs in a machine, toting up hours that
feed corporate profits but fail to satisfy our souls. God made us for the everlasting bliss of gazing
into his eyes. So, if drudgery consumes our time, we should fill our free hours with deep nurture
rather than televised fluff.
The acid test is always: How will we be remembered? Imagine grandchildren saying: “She
trudged dutifully, year after year, to all her commitments, but we did not see her much.” Or im-
agine their voices lightening as they recall: “She was so much fun! When we cooked her special
chili we laughed and told stories. I will always remember her pride in her garden, how she’d grin
at the first tomatoes!” These positive attitudes are not Pollyanna-esque. They are choices as diffi-
cult to honor as any of the Ten Commandments. Let’s face it, the daily news is often depress-
ing...The daily media hardly sends us rushing for the tambourines. That’s why we need God’s
strength to remain faithful, confident, and hopeful.
From prison comes an example of one who honored the difficult eleventh commandment. There,
Fyodor Dostoevsky wrote: “Yes, we are in chains, deprived of liberty, but in our sorrow, we are
restored to joy, without which we cannot live...We underground men, we will dig in the entrails
of the earth a tragic hymn to the God of joy!” If convicts can sing praise from the entrails of the
earth, what about us? We are rich in faith, blessings, comforts, and wealth. Yet our distracted
days and frowning faces give little praise to the God of joy.
Before we all start a serious pursuit of joy, a few qualifications. It cannot be sought. It is a gift. It
springs from the conviction that the kingdom of God is near. It is like Lazarus emerging from the
tomb, squinting in the sunlight, and laughing. Joy is the appropriate response when we know we
are saved, rescued despite our failures, happy not in our achievements, but in God’s fidelity.
The image of a child snoozing in a [mother’s] lap may be a cliché, but it resembles our content-
ment in God’s presence, where we are at all times. Joy spills from the security of knowing every
need will be met — not necessarily the way we foresee, but in God’s time and pleasure. Dancing
conveys the same joy: arms wide, feet in rhythm, and worries set aside. Contrast that with our
postures when burdened by negativity. We must carry ourselves with joy. The Living Jesus will
not be found in boredom and inertia, but in what brings beauty and restores grace. And because
he is risen, so are we. Despite suffering, we were made for joy. Maybe that commandment is not
carved on a stone tablet, but we can write it on our hearts.

A CALL TO PRAYER _____________________
Praying for Our Mothers
A PRAYER FOR ALL WOMEN
We pray for young mothers,
who give life, count toes, and tend to our needs.
May they be blessed with patience and tenderness
to care for their families and themselves
with greatest joy.
We pray for our own mothers,
who have nurtured us and cared for us.
May they continue to guide us
in strong and gentle ways.
We remember our mothers
who are separated from their children
because of poverty, pandemic, or war.
May they feel the loving embrace of God
who wipes away every tear.
We pray for women who are not mothers,
but still love us and shape us
with loving care and compassion.
We remember our mothers,
grandmothers, and godmothers,
who are no longer with us,
but live forever in our memories,
and still nourish us with their love and prayers.
Glory to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever.
Amen! Alleluia!
Pastor’s Note
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S NEWSLETTER
Mother’s Day is always bittersweet. We celebrate with the mothers who are still with us; and
we weep for those who have passed from this life. Needless to say, this Mother’s Day will be
especially difficult for many families. Our newsletter seeks to build a bridge between this time
of trial and the eternal joy that lies beyond. It features three beautiful prayers; and two reflec-
tions by two of my favorite writers: Kathy Coffey and Cliff Garvey. Cliff’s reflection is actually
a short version of one of two talks offered at last year’s Spring Day of Prayer. Both talks will
be available as free podcasts at assisiproject.com on Friday, May 15th. As we begin another
week of social distancing, let’s continue to pray together for God’s mercy, healing, and protec-
tion from the coronavirus. Happy Mother’s Day! Peace and blessings to all! — Father Jim
