Taste and see the goodness of the Lord
In June 1859, Jean-François Gravelet
(known as The Great Blondin) crossed Niagara
Falls walking a tight rope. During his life, he
repeated the feat several times, always with a
different theatrical variation: blindfolded, in a
sack, trundling a wheelbarrow, on stilts, carrying
his manager, Harry Colcord on his back.
Not surprisingly, Blondin's crossings drew
crowds. About to cross pushing a wheelbarrow
with a sack of cement, he asked a reporter standing
with crowd. "Do you believe I can do this?" "Yes
sir, after watching you, I believe you can do
anything." "Do you believe that instead of a sack
of cement, I could put a man in this wheelbarrow,
and wheel him safely to the other side?" "Oh, yes,
Mr. Blondin, I certainly believe it." "Good," said
Blondin, "Get in."
In our gospel for this weekend, we hear
the last segment of the “Bread of Life” discourse
from John’s Gospel. From here, we will go back
to Mark’s Gospel for the rest of the Liturgical
Year. In this reading we hear of people walking
away saying: “This is too hard [to listen to]; who
can accept it?” In other words, they wouldn’t get
in. They weren’t willing to take that leap of faith.
Many of them saw numerous miracles that He
had performed even to feeding at least five-
thousand with five loaves of bread and a couple
of fish.
But sometimes, we too are afraid to ‘get
in’ when there’s a bit of a struggle involved;
when we aren’t quite sure of our selves, and we
avoid any conflict. We may hear someone bashing
our Catholic Church especially now in the wake
of the recent Grand Jury statement on the abuses
and the cover-up of the Church in the Dioceses
of Pennsylvania. That report with its evidence
of cover-up is terrible and it never should have
happened.
When we hear the subject breeched
about the terrible things that have happened
there and in many other places, it’s okay to
express our anger and disgust along with anyone
else. However, we need to remind ourselves and
others not to think or talk in terms of generaliza-
tion which may cast a shadow not only over the
entire Catholic Church, but that shadow is being
cast over good, dedicated, and self-sacrificing
priests as well.
Now, more than ever, we all need to pray
daily for our priests. We need to be more coura-
geous and grounded in our Catholic Faith to keep
the issues in truth and not extended beyond that.
We need to tell our good and dedicated Shepherds
that we are praying for them. We need to “get in.”
And, if you hear that someone says: “This
latest scandal is too hard; who can accept it?”
Remember this; The Eucharist is His true flesh.
The Eucharist is His true blood. To whom shall
we go? He gives us the gift of eternal life. That
gift as well as so many others, comes to us
through the Bride of Christ, (the Catholic
Church) and her priests. Let’s be willing to
“get in.”
Readings for the Week Monday 2 Thes 1:1-5, 11-12/Mt 23:13-22
Tuesday 2 Thes 2:1-3a, 14-17/Mt 23:23-26
Wednesday 2 Thes 3:6-10, 16-18/Mk 6:17-29
Thursday 1 Cor 1:1-9/Mt 24:42-51
Friday 1 Cor 1:17-25/Mt 25:1-13
Saturday 1 Cor 1:26-31/Mt 25:14-30
Sunday Dt 4:1-2, 6-8/Jas 1:17-18, 31b-22, 27 Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Join us next week as our readings’ focus is: “Jesus, who is the fulfillment of God’s laws and prophets, tells us how to live out God’s commandments.” Next week’s readings, we will think about the best way to live out God’s command-ments, passed on to us through Moses, by witnessing God’s blessings and presence in our midst. We can go beyond our human traditions and rituals by washing our hearts and getting rid of evil thoughts and desires. We practice it by caring for all who are vulnerable and in need.

Blessing of College Students
As your young adults begin to go off to college, make sure to leave them with both your blessing and the blessing of God. Use the following as an example…
Loving God, we thank you for bringing us to this moment. As they enter into this new phase of life, help them to be strong enough to know when they are weak, and brave enough to face them self when afraid. Give them the ability to appreciate joy and the strength to weather life’s chal-lenges. Teach them compassion for those in need. Grant them the insight to know them self and the wisdom to know You. Help them to feel Your Presence as they begin this new journey through life.
Email Bible Study
Are you interested in being part of a weekly bible study – but don’t have the time to meet? Check this out…
This fall, we will have a six-week study on the first half (chapters 1-14) of the Acts of the Apostles. The second half will take place in the spring. Every week, beginning the week of September 24, Joe Zenk will send out the assigned reading for that week along with a number of questions for you to pray with, meditate upon and an-swer on your own. You won’t have to share them with anyone else if you do not wish to as they are for your own spiritual growth. Then, at the end of the six weeks (on November 8), the group is invited together to dis-cuss their thoughts from the book we’ve read. Don’t have time to come to the gathering? You don’t have to…it’s that easy.
To sign up, email Joe at [email protected] or con-tact any of our parish offices with your name and email.
Seminarian Collection
Thank you to those who have participated in the annual Seminarian Collection: Hope for the Future, Help them Today. There is still time to respond to the great need we have to support our local seminarians. Have you made your gift?
These are our totals so far this year; 4 parishioners gave $265 (St. Ann)
42 parishioners gave $2,420 (Holy Rosary)
28 parishioners gave $1,195 (SS. Peter & Paul).
Last year, our parish totals were;
23 parishioners gave $2,395 (St. Ann)
81 parishioners gave $4,170 (Holy Rosary)
67 parishioners gave $4,800 (SS. Peter & Paul).
Let’s see if we can increase our support of this very
important part of the mission of the Diocese of Green Bay. Disciples need to support one another. Make your gift today by mailing in your pledge card or visit www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give.

Registration & Information
Faith Formation registration form and information has been emailed to all returning families. If you are new to the parish or have a student in Kindergarten or 1st grade and would like information about our program please contact Danielle Ehlenbeck, [email protected], to receive the needed paperwork. All parents should attend the mandatory parent meeting on September 5th at 6:30pm. We are also looking for a few catechists; we need catechists for grades 4, 10, and 11 (second semester only). If you would like more information or to volunteer to help out please contact Danielle.
New Doors
If you would like to help contribute to the new fire doors at the south entrances to church you can make your contribution to the Building and Maintenance collection any time during month of August. The total cost for the doors was just under $13,000.
Bread & Wine
In the recent packet of stewardship envelopes you may have found a yellow envelope labeled ALTAR BREADS AND WINE. This offering, which is open to ALL members of our parish if they wish—helps support the purchase of alter bread and wines for the entire year.
Last fiscal year our cost for both bread & wine was $737 and your generous envelope contributions covered $490. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Didn’t get an envelope but would still like to contribute to this? Just drop your contribution in the collection in an envelope marked Bread & Wine. Be sure to include your name.
Custodial Position Filled
We welcome back Fred Meyer to the position of custodian here at Ss. Peter & Paul! Fred will begin in mid-September. In the meantime, many thanks to Al Meiselwitz and Bill Gaedke who have served in this position for many years and who stayed on until a replacement can be found. Thanks gentlemen!

The stack of pie & cake pans is slowly going down, but there are still some pans in the church basement waiting for their owners to pick them up. The church doors are open

Thank you, Mary, for helping lead us in song and prayer all these years! We are now in need of someone (or a team of people) who would be willing to play piano, lead the choir and select music for St. Ann. Please prayerfully consider whether God is calling you at this time for this ministry. Contact Joe or Laura at the office (894-3147) if you are interested or have questions.
Project Update Workers and volunteers have been busy working on our project. The shed has been disassembled and removed, trees were cut down and cleaned up, the septic line is buried for the future bathroom, down spouts have been buried, and the new ramp has been poured. This past week the front steps were removed and replaced, and the north and south parking lots were grated. Due to the extent of this work, Mass on Sunday, August 26th is at Ss. Peter & Paul. Please continue to check the website and answering system for updates about Mass. Thank you for your generosity to make this project a reality.
