What is tithing?
Tithing is the practice, established by God in the Old
Testament, of returning 10% of your blessings to God.
Originally the tithe was given to the temple or the
Church in the form of produce or livestock, since this
really was the only income that the people had. As our
society shifted from a barter-based system of trade to a
monetary exchange system, the tithe began to be paid
in currency. Whether one gave monetary income or
profit from the fields was really not as important as it
was for the believer to understand that the tithe was
what was owed to God. The tithe was not given based
on the needs of the priests, of the Church or of the poor.
It was given simply in recognition and gratitude for the
blessings that God had bestowed on the individual.
Thus, every believer had a need to tithe to God. “The tithes of the herd and the flock shall be determined by
ceding to the Lord as sacred every tenth animal as they are
counted by the herdsman’s rod.” - Leviticus 27:32
The Cathedral Council of Catholic Women (CCCW) presented a check for $2000 to Father Marino for the Cathedral. We wish to thank the parishioners for their continued support.

Pact News
Over the last few years, we have seen our local community change drastically. The lack of afforda-ble housing has been among the concerns. Statistics show that more than 250,000 thousand renting families are forced to spend more than 50 percent of their income on rent, leaving little to cover car expenses, child care, medical needs, groceries and other necessities. God calls us to DO JUSTICE in Mi-
cah 6:8 among acts of mercy and faithfulness. We will gather together on Wednesday, February 17th, at 7:00PM to do what God has called. Father
Marino will be in attendance and ready to discuss our plan of action.
As follow-up, I will be at St. Mary next Sunday Feb 7th at 10AM to table for PACT and Father Marino will make an announcement about our meeting on

WE WILL CELEBRATE MASS IN HONOR OF
THE ELEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
DEATH OF THE SERVANT OF GOD
FR. LUIGI GIUSSANI,
FOUNDER OF THE MOVEMENT OF
COMMUNION & LIBERATION.
“That only Christ gives meaning to the whole
of our life. He always kept the eyes of his life
and of his heart fixed on Christ. In this way,
he understood that Christianity is not an
intellectual system, a packet of dogmas, a
moralism. Christianity is rather an
encounter, a love story; it is an event.”

powerful yet sensitive voice blends beautifully with the acous-tics of the Cathedral of St. Mary and will surely be a delight for the ears as well as the heart. Accompanying on the piano
