...that continuity is a wonderful thing and that 2009 marks 109 years of Hettich. It is also the year that I can celebrate 25 years in the family business that was started by my great grandfather in 1900.

Even though he is now retired from day to day operations, my father Antony remains as chairman of Hettich, having joined the family business in 1954.

We understand the lessons learned from the passage of time. We have seen two world wars, one great depression, numerous other crises and we even survived an occupation. In these uncertain times, it is comforting to have this great reservoir of experience and to know we can stand the test of time.

We remain committed to the traditional values that have served us so well, visit us soon and see what we mean.

Wonderful diamonds, stunning jewellery, famous watches and some interesting reading - we’ve got it all!

Did you know...

It’s a family affair

Enduring collections are among the venerable traditions upheld by Patek Philippe: the Geneva-

based manufacture is now celebrating the 40th birthday of its legendary Golden Ellipse family with a first platinum version and an exclusive two-watch set with matching jewellery for people who cherish timeless elegance. In 1868, Patek Philippe crafted the very first Swiss wristwatch. It was a delicate jewelled timepiece. One hundred years later, wristwatches were ubiquitous, and there was hardly any shape that designers had not yet tried out. The spectrum of case styles ranged from classic round to rectangular and square as well as to triangular for Masonic watches.

It almost seemed as if the creatives had reached their wits’ end – until the day when the eminent Genevan manufacture Patek Philippe unveiled its Golden Ellipse in 1968. The new watch was appealing not only because of its novel and uncommon case form, but also because the 18K gold dial radiated an unfathomably deep blue glow. The exact process used to coax this almost magic hue out of a gold dial remains one of the best-kept secrets of the manufacture.

For the first time, Patek Philippe presents its Golden Ellipse in a large format with a platinum case. The original large-format Golden Ellipse, coveted among collectors and connoisseurs alike, was crafted from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. The cool sheen of platinum underscores the timeless elegance of the new extra large case of the Ref.

5738P, amplified by the divinely proportioned form that strikes a chord in our quest for harmony.

An exclusive limited-edition anniversary set was created to commemorate the 40th birthday of the Golden Ellipse. Each of the 100 precious wood boxes contains two Golden Ellipse timepieces: extra large Ref. 5738P and classic size Ref. 3758/100P. Both have exquisite platinum cases with discreet diamonds between the lugs at 6 o’clock, the mysteriously shimmering Blue Gold® dials, blue alligator straps, and superb self-winding mechanical caliber 240 movements.

This magnificent set of two is the perfect choice for people whose togetherness is just as harmonious

as the divine proportions of the Golden Ellipse. For men, the anniversary set includes two Golden Ellipse cuff links

in 18K white gold with Blue Gold® centers. For ladies, the

leather-lined drawer contains a graceful 18K white gold necklace

with Golden Ellipse pendants and 69 flawless Top Wesselton diamonds as

well as 29 glistening blue sapphires, one of which is cabochon-cut.

Within the current Patek Philippe collection, the extra large Ref. 5738P Golden Ellipse and the cuff links are also available separately. The platinum-cased Ref. 3738/100P in the classic format and the necklace, however, are available only in the limited edition anniversary set and will not be integrated in the current collection.

Often the setting of myths and legends, the oceans have sparked imagination since the beginning of time. They kindle in man an irrepressible desire for adventure, challenge and ever greater achievement, a drive throughout the ages to seek new heights and explore the deep.

The new Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is a product of man’s inherent desire to push the boundaries of his dreams and his potential.

Waterproof to an extreme depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet), this new-generation diver’s watch confirms the supremacy of Rolex in the mastery of waterproofness and demonstrates an ever-present pursuit of excellence.

Entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex, the Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is a totally new watch that benefits from important technical innovations. It is equipped with a RINGLOCK SYSTEM, a new case architecture patented by Rolex, which allows the watch to resist the colossal pressure exerted by water at great depths. It is the first watch to feature a bracelet with a double extension system making it easily adaptable for greater comfort in wear over a diving suit.

The Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA responds to the most exacting demands of professional divers in terms of robustness, precision and reliability.

With its intrinsic capabilities, the Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA takes a rightful place in the prestigious Oyster family. It illustrates the pioneering spirit that led Rolex to develop, as early as the 1950s, divers’ watches like the Submariner and the Sea-Dweller. Its name pays tribute to the Deep Sea Special, the experimental prototype that in 1960 plunged to a depth of 10,916 metres in the Mariana Trench.

The Royal Asscher® Diamond Company was founded in 1854. The company has a legendary

European heritage and an exclusive client list of international royalty and celebrities – visitors to the company’s headquarters include Japan’s Emperor Hirohito, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands. The company was originally named the Asscher Diamond Company, its Royal title was awarded by HM Queen Juliana of the Netherlands in 1980 in recognition of the company’s leading role in the diamond industry in The Netherlands.

The Asscher family dynasty has had an indelible influence on the diamond industry – Joseph Asscher, at the request of King Edward VII, cut the largest diamond ever found, the famous 3,105 carat Cullinan stone which was cut into three parts to form part of Great Britain’s Crown Jewels. Joseph Asscher also designed and patented the original Asscher Cut in 1902. More than a century later Edward and Joop Asscher continued the Asscher’s legacy and created a variant of the original, the Royal Asscher® Cut.

The more discerning customer hopes to wear an authentic original item - the Royal Asscher® Diamond Company offers a unique authenticity guarantee. Each and every Royal Asscher® Cut is laser inscribed with the Royal Asscher® logo and an individual identification number which belongs to a single diamond only, this number is registered with the Royal Asscher® Diamond Company in Amsterdam and is listed on a certificate that accompanies the diamond.

At present the fifth and sixth generation of the Asscher family are at the helm of Royal Asscher®. Edward, President, heads up the European division of the company, his daughter Lita, is the Managing Director of the Royal Asscher® North America and his son Mike is responsible for international diamond production and Far East sales.

The Royal Asscher® Diamond Company strongly opposes the trade of conflict diamonds and refuses to work with conflict diamonds. Indeed the Asschers themselves actively campaign for an ethically operating diamond industry. Edward Asscher has received a knighthood for such work, becoming an Officer in the Order of Oranje Nassau in 1999.

Enthralling, uncompromising, exclusive: These are the values we hold dear, and the philosophy

that underlies everything we do. “Enthralling” expresses our ongoing search for the new and the attractive - jewellery that captivates and fascinates. It is also about the way we combine the lustre, shape, colour, size and surface of our pearls to create jewellery that makes the wearer look and feel special. “Uncompromising” describes Schoeffel’s unwavering dedication to quality and design. “Exclusive” refers to the skills and aesthetic expertise that go into all our creations - from selecting the pearls to hand-crafting exquisite jewellery.

This philosophy is the cornerstone on which Schoeffel’s reputation is built, not just among customers, but also among jewellers throughout the world - a reputation for exceptional quality in everything we create, from the very simple to the very sophisticated.

The Schoeffel logo is a feature of all our jewellery. Each pearl necklace includes an 18ct gold logo, and all other items in our collection have an embossed version. It bears witness to our commitment to total quality, and is a respected hallmark around the world. It confirms that the purchaser has impeccable taste and has made an excellent choice.

THE LUSTRE | is the sheen - the fascinating way pearl reflects light: The soft shimmer that seems to emanate from within. The lustre gives a pearl its unique appearance and its seductive charm, and is the most important quality criterion for Schoeffel.

THE SHAPE | has a major influence on value. Some occur as perfect spheres and are worth more, others possess forms that emphasise a pearl’s natural personality.

THE SURFACE | always includes some unevenness, and this lends each pearl its unique character.

However, generally speaking, the fewer blemishes, the greater the value.

THE SIZE | of a pearl has a limited impact on its value, and is only considered once other criteria have been taken into account. Nevertheless, the value usually rises in proportion to size.

THE COLOUR | has, from an objective point of view, little to do with the quality of a pearl. However it does influence the value: The rarer the colour, the greater the value.

THE RIGHT BLEND | is of vital importance to Schoeffel quality. All pearls set in Schoeffel necklaces are a harmonious combination of lustre, shape, surface, size and colour - a blend that is not just eye-catching, but also breath-taking.

The Schoeffel philosophyand the defining features of Schoeffel pearls.

Before Baccarat crystal there was only glass. Old legends lie behind the origin of crystal and experts have never agreed upon its discovery. However, history brings us back to Asia Minor

where glass was used to make simple but various containers. This was before Syrian glass-makers discovered in the 1st Century BC the first blowing techniques. The discovery moved the production from simple objects to a completely new form of glassware – blown glass. Today, Baccarat is still using the same pioneering free-hand techniques.

Yet the word ‘crystal’, inspired by the Greek word ‘krustallos’, had to wait till the 10th Century to be used, when Venetian craftsmen began making a much finer and completely transparent glass. The glass remained impure and raw until 1676 when the London based glass-maker George Ravenscroft, who had previously worked in Venice, discovered lead oxide, a new element to add to the original composition. The result was a limpid, bright, shining rock of crystal. A century later, in 1769 in France, under the reign of Louis XV, Lord Bishop of Metz founded the legendary Baccarat crystal factory.

Baccarat crystal is obtained from one of the finest and whitest sands on earth, combined with other mineral elements such as potash and lead oxide.

The high presence of lead in Baccarat’s crystal, which is far greater than the minimum of 24% required, makes it a full-lead crystal, incomparable in terms of radiance, shine and limpidity. Baccarat always utilises the purest elements, combining them with an extraordinary know-how that has no equal in the world.

Baccarat crystalware is one of the most prestigious French products, and perfection is what distinguished Baccarat from others. Baccarat is considered a stable foundation and synonymous with tradition, heritage, and creative design. Baccarat always encloses innovation together with a sophisticated and avant-garde technology, often opening its doors to celebrated designers, such as George Chevalier, Salvador Dali, and Ettore Sottsass.

The highest quality in product and services - this is Baccarat. After production all the pieces must undergo a particularly vigilant and strict quality standard inspection by Baccarat selectors. All aspects are closely verified, as imperfection is not allowed. Baccarat never has a sale and never sells a second. Its international reputation is unrivalled. No other crystal factory has the same number of ‘Best Workers’. Twenty-five in total were awarded by the French Government with this exclusive status, which is still now the highest number of all French companies. This subtle combination of traditionally artistic craft methods with a highly uncompromising service makes Baccarat the best in luxury and elegance.

What is crystal and why is Baccarat the best?

Chopard jewellery enjoyed a starring role on the red carpet at this year’s BAFTAs, adorning the bodies of some of the film world’s most talented stars. On one of the most glamorous events of the year, it seemed only fitting to bedeck the halls with a generous smattering of diamonds.

Best Leading Actress Marion Cotillard chose an oval hair ornament, a diamond line bracelet and a diamond and pearl bracelet from the Pushkin collection to accept her award, while Sienna Miller, nominee for The Orange Rising Star Award, wore a pair of white and brown diamond strand earrings and a total of 30 carats of white diamonds around her wrist to complete her old-Hollywood look.

After the awards ceremony, guests attended a lavish after-party hosted by film producer Harvey Weinstein, Chopard Co-President Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele and Amy Sacco at the exclusive Bungalow8 club. Guests including Kate Hudson, Jaime Winstone, Lady Victoria Harvey and Ridley Scott enjoyed Perrier Jouet “Golden Diamond” themed champagne cocktails, finished with real gold leaf, and canapés from St Martin’s Lane’s acclaimed restaurant Asia de Cuba. Dazzling displays of Chopard jewellery delighted guests as they celebrated the evening’s successes.

The Stars Are Out

Hollywood and glamour go hand in hand, and who better to provide the stars of the film world with their sparkle than Chopard?

Chopard has long had a presence at the Oscars, with the leading ladies of the last five years – Marion Cotillard (2008), Helen Mirren (2007), Rachel Weisz (2006), Hilary Swank (2005) and Charlize Theron (2004) – accepting their Best Actress accolade adorned in Chopard’s delectable diamonds.

This year, Marion Cotillard took one of the most prestigious titles of the night – Best Actress – for her role in La Vie en Rose. She wore a stunning custom-made Jean Paul Gautier creation, and accessorised with Chopard jewels: a 64 carat champagne diamond briolette necklace layered over light and dark brown diamond bead necklaces. She added a brilliant cut yellow diamond ring to complete the luxurious look.

Presenter and two time Best Actress winner Hilary Swank wore diamond flower hairclips, round cut diamond earrings on a French wire and a Snowflake diamond bracelet with her Atelier Versace gown, while Penelope Cruz, also a presenter for the evening, chose to wear 25 carat ruby and diamond drop earrings, a fancy shaped diamond bracelet and a marquise cut diamond ring.

The Oscars are renowned not only for the prestige of the ceremony, but also for the spectacular after-party held by Sir Elton John each year, in support of the Elton John AIDs Foundation. The host wore a fancy shaped diamond lariat necklace, a 12 carat radiant cut diamond stud earrings and a 120 carat pear-shape pink tourmaline ring, while his partner and co-host David Furnish chose a spectacular Chopard timepiece for the evening. Guests including Eva Herzigova, Portia de Rossi and Minnie Driver all wore Chopard jewellery for the celebrations.

The Oscars (80th Annual Academy Awards) Cannes

The 61st International Cannes Film Festival got off to a flying and fabulous start this year, with an Opening Night Gala to remember. Chopard Co-President Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele worked in collaboration with celebrated fashion designer Alberta Ferretti to create the Desire gown – a unique cohesion of fashion and jewellery – which was auctioned at the gala on behalf of the fight against AIDs. Valued at $700,000, the gown was fashioned from lilac silk chiffon embellished with a selection of precious stones totalling 2,904 carats. An array of stars attended the event, including Cate Blanchett, Mischa Barton and Gillian Anderson, who all wore Chopard jewels.

Oscar-nominated actress Penelope Cruz arrived for the premiere of her film Vicky Cristina Barcelona looking every bit the Spanish goddess in a white Grecian-inspired Marchesa gown. She accessorised with Chopard’s fancy-shaped diamond earrings with pear-shaped drops, a fancy shaped diamond bracelet and a six carat oval-shaped diamond cocktail ring. Cate Blanchett chose an Armani Prive gown with an incredible necklace from the Red Carpet Collection for the premiere of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which included cushion and round shaped tanzanite, amethyst, round shaped rose-cut diamonds and 952 sapphires. Some of the world’s brightest stars accessorised with Chopard for the red carpet, including Catherine Deneuve, Salma Hayek, Dita Von Teese and Madonna.

Once again, Chopard sealed its commitment to cinema by presenting an award – the Trophée Chopard – to two of the most talented up-and-coming actors in the film industry. This year’s winners were American actor Omar Metwally and Chinese actress Tang Wei, who graciously accepted their trophies from Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele and Gilles Jacob, President of the Cannes Film Festival. Celebrations commenced at the Zéphir Lounge of the Carlton Hotel, with actor Andy Garcia and his band providing the entertainment for the evening.

As early as 1888 the first reference to wristwatches can be found in the Cartier archives. At around

the same time, pocket and chatelaine watches were also popular, but for Louis Cartier, the future lay in wristwatches. It is the beginning of a long love story, and the stepping stone to the creation of many other models: the Tonneau watch, the Tortue watch, the Tank watch, the Baignoire watch, the Panthère watch, the Pasha watch… Names that refer to a certain shape, a winding crown, a “rail-track” minute circle, hands, a dial… and all keep Cartier time.

Similar yet different, they are recognisable at first glance, they reflect a simple but stylish aesthetic, geometric but soft, always elegant, never fussy.

The perfect equation that makes them either men’s or women’s watches, casual or sophisticated, depending on the time of day or the way in which they are worn. Their growing success bears witness to the fact that time is on their side.

Cartier the watchmaker,

a path marked by success...

In July 2008 we held a very special presentation with Harry Collins the Crown Jeweller and the Royal Asscher Diamond Company. They are linked by the Cullinan Diamond which at 3,105ct was the largest diamond ever found. This magnificent gem was cut by Asscher and the resulting stones were set in our own Crown Jewels. Harry gave us a fascinating insight in to the Cullinan Diamond and life as the Crown Jeweller.
